A local comedy theater is offering shoppers laughs in exchange for supporting small businesses this Black Friday.

The Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) located at 2030 Sansom Street, will be home to the Black Friday Comedy Marathon. Hosted by the comedy troupe “Hey, We’re Cool,” the marathon is scheduled to last nearly two full days with 115 acts set to perform starting Friday at 10 a.m.

“If you don’t want to be out spending a couple hundred dollars, staying up all night in the cold you can just get up in the morning, have breakfast, come down here, pay ten bucks, and sit and watch comedy until Saturday night,” said Greg Maughan, PHIT Founder and Executive Director.

Hundreds of performers submitted to participate, making it tough to choose the best acts. There will be something for everyone, said PHIT Artistic Director, Ralph Andracchio.

“There’s improv acts, there’s sketch, there’s variety shows, and then there’s stand up as well through the whole thing," Andracchio said. "And then the late night bits that are kind of like, “What is this?” type shows.”

Tickets for the Black Friday Comedy Marathon are $10 but everyone has the opportunity to get in free of charge by shopping at local businesses around the Philly Improv Theater.

The Black Friday Comedy Marathon offers an opportunity to shoppers to support those smaller businesses as the holiday season kicks off, a time when the department stores are often flooded with people trying to take advantage of their sales.

Maughan, a small-business owner, said it’s important to support other locally owned shops especially.

“You can go to a small business around the theater, buy something and bring your receipt from that business,” he explained. “Or some businesses are going to have physical cards that say free pass that they’ll give you when you make a purchase”.

Follow @BFCM2014 and the hashtag #BFCM2014 on Twitter for updates from hosts, “Hey, We’re Cool” including backstage interviews with some of the performers. For more information on the Black Friday Comedy Marathon, including a full schedule of performances and where to get a free pass, visit www.blackfridaycomedymarathon.com or www.phillyimprovtheater.com.

Missing Mom Was Killed by Stepfather: Police

The search for Jessica Padgett, a missing mother and newlywed from Northampton County, came to a stunning end the day before Thanksgiving when investigators announced she'd been murdered by her stepfather.

District Attorney John Morganelli said Gregory Graf admitted he shot Padgett in his home and disposed of her body, burying her in the yard behind a shed. The motive appears to be sexual assault, Morganelli said.

Padgett, a mother of three, was last seen Friday when she left her job at the Duck Duck Goose day care center in Northampton. She told co-workers she had to run an errand but never returned.

The 33-year-old woman's car was found less than a mile away in the parking lot of a Dollar General store. Her cellphone and keys were inside.

"I just want my sister found," said Jeremy Graf, sobbing just hours before being told her body had been found on their parents' property at Covered Bridge Road in Allen Township.

Padgett had a second job working for Graf's company, Distinctive Fence, located on the same property where he and Padgett’s mother live. Investigators believe Padgett went there Friday to use the fax machine.

"During an interview with the investigators he [Graf] did admit that he intentionally and knowingly caused the death of the victim at his home," Morganelli said, adding the crime may have been premeditated. Surveillance video shows a man prosecutors believe is Graf, dropping his truck off in the Dollar General parking lot Friday morning. Later in the day, Morganelli said Graf returned to the parking lot in Padgett's SUV, parked it and drove off again in his truck.

Family and friends launched an intense search effort for Padgett, and started a Help Find Jessica Padgett on Facebook. The victim's sister, Kristi Davis, posted this message:

"We are devastated by the loss of Jessica. she was a beautiful, vibrant young woman who was beloved by her family and friends. The world shines less bright today."

Greg Graf was one of the 7-thousand people following that Facebook page. Family friends said Graf helped search for Padgett several times after she disappeared.

"The fact that this person was right under our noses and was that close to Jess," said Jim Wilkins, a family friend. "That he could just betray the family...This was a man who was around Jess since she was a child. We're obviously heartbroken."

Graf, 53, was taken into police custody Wednesday night. He faces murder charges.

Trouble on SEPTA's Airport Line

Travelers heading to Philadelphia International Airport via SEPTA's regional rail lines Wednesday night will want to give themselves some extra time.

Wire problems on the Airport Line are forcing the transit authority to stop trains at the Eastwick station near the airport. Passengers will then be loaded onto shuttle buses to complete their trip, officials said. The reverse will apply for trips into Center City.

SEPTA is also cutting back the number of trips to and from the airport to every hour starting at 8 p.m. Trains usually run every 30 minutes on the Airport line, according to published schedules.

The transit authority has not said when the issue may be resolved.

A Philadelphia man is accused of posing as a police officer in order to steal money.

Christopher Keiter, 28, was arrested and charged with robbery, impersonation of a police officer and false imprisonment.

On Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, Keiter allegedly approached a 19-year-old man on the 3100 block of North Broad Street. Each time he identified himself as a Philadelphia Police Officer, investigators said.

During each incident, Keiter allegedly handcuffed the man while inside a corner store and then took money from him, claiming the cash was being kept as evidence. Keiter then told the man to go to the 7th floor of City Hall if he wanted his money returned, according to police.

The victim’s grandfather told NBC10 he reported the incidents to police who were eventually able to arrest Keiter.

Aside from the most recent charges, Keiter was also arrested twice beforehand, once for impersonating another police officer and once for impersonating a fireman.

Officials have not yet released Keiter’s bail information.

Stores in New Jersey might have their hours limited during future Thanksgivings.

State Sen. Richard Codey is considering a bill that would prevent stores from opening before 9 p.m. so employees can enjoy the holiday with their families.

The Democrat says employees are put in the position of risking their jobs if they want to celebrate the holiday. Codey says companies should put their workers' needs ahead of profits.

Retailers say they're responding to customer demand and opening on Thanksgiving helps increase sales and profits, which benefit employees.

More than two dozen malls and outlets in New Jersey are opening on Thanksgiving, some as early as 10 a.m.

After Wavering, City Embraces 'Charlie Brown' Christmas Tree

The 50-foot spruce standing in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania, drew comparisons to the sad-looking tree in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and ire from some city officials -- nearly leading to a switch. But instead of a replacing the spindly sapling, the Berks County city is embracing the likeness to the famous holiday cartoon.

"In honor of the famous Charlie Brown Christmas tree, we will be decorating the tree with one single red ornamental bulb," according to a City of Reading news release. "We hope that this reminds all who are following the story of our tree of the deeper meaning of the holiday season."

Only a week earlier, Reading City Council's president, Francis Acosta, led a group of citizens interested in having the Norway spruce, located at 5th and Penn streets, replaced by a fuller tree.

But Acosta changed his mind about the "horrible" tree and stopped workers Monday as they were in the midst of removing decorations from the "pathetic" spruce.

"Between the snow forecasted to come to Reading and the deadline for a 2015 budget this week," Acosta said, "I think we should be focusing efforts on preparing our streets for the storm and finalizing the city's 2015 budget."

The replacement, which was donated, will go up in Reading's City Park -- and a separate decorating ceremony will take Friday and Saturday for the new tree.

Reading's official holiday tree -- which remains at the corner of 5th and Penn streets -- and it's lone ornament will be rededicated Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

"We would like to thank everyone who has offered to help the city beautify the tree and ask for help to spread the true meaning of the season that the tree symbolizes throughout our city and our great nation," the city said in a news release.

Anyone interested in helping Reading with its holiday mission can donate to the city's Holiday Spirit Fund at any Fulton Bank location. The money will be used to purchase copies of the book, A Charlie Brown Christmas, for children participating in the city's upcoming seasonal festivities.

Rescued Dog Finds New Home

After being nursed back to health by the Delaware County SPCA, a severely malnourished dog will go to its permanent home the day after Thanksgiving.

Pearl the Dog will head home after being adopted at the Delco SPCA Adoption Center located at 555 Sandy Bank Road, in Media, Pennsylvania.

The adult female pit bull terrier mix with white fur and black spots weighed barely more than 20 pounds — its ribs protruding — when humane Investigators plucked Pearl from the backyard of home on Thomas Street in Chester, Pennsylvania last month, said the Delco SPCA.

Two people pleaded guilty to emaciation and neglect charges — misdemeanors — in relation to Pearl's case.

Despite barely being able to stand and constantly falling over when it tried, the dog would show affection toward people and constantly wagged her tail, according to the SPCA. The SPCA staff named her Pearl “because of her beautiful disposition despite the adversity she has undergone,” said rescuers.

The SPCA put Pearl on a regiment of feeding every two hours as well as giving the dog supplements and proper veterinary care as it recovered.

A family came forward to adopt Pearl after the SPCA announced last week that the pup was healthy enough to find a home.

A record number of pets, however, remained at the Delco SPCA prompting the group to hold a Black Friday adoption special where adoption fees will be reduced and you can even get 50 percent off with a coupon found on the SPCA website.
