New Jersey Gas Prices Still Falling

Motorists continue to see lower prices at the pumps in New Jersey.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state on Friday was $2.73, down 3 cents from last week. That's also much lower than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.18.

This marks the tenth straight week that gas prices have fallen in New Jersey.

The national average price on Friday was $2.84, down 7 cents from last week. That's also much lower than the national average from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.22.

Analysts say the lower prices are mostly due to abundant global oil production that has led to falling crude oil prices.

A southern New Jersey police officer will not have to serve a prison term for using his position to engage in sexual conduct with a female informant..

Steven Hadley received a suspended five-year term when he was sentenced Friday.

Hadley, who served 10 years on the Egg Harbor City force, had pleaded guilty in October to official misconduct as part of a plea bargain with Atlantic County prosecutors. In return, they agreed to dismiss four other counts of official misconduct.

Hadley was paralyzed in a car crash that occurred on Sept. 24, 2013, the same day the charges were filed against him. Authorities have said Hadley's pickup left the Garden State Parkway and struck a tree.

The 32-year-old Port Republic resident spent seven months in the hospital following the crash.

Philly Prepared for Possible Ferguson Protests: Police

A Philadelphia organization plans to demonstrate if a grand jury decides there is not enough evidence to indict a St. Louis-area police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teen in August. And officials with the Philadelphia Police Department said they are ready for any local rallies.

"The department anticipates demonstrations following an announcement in the grand jury decision in Ferguson," a spokeswoman for Philly Police said. "We will be on hand to ensure the safety of all citizens, ensure property is protected and minimize disruption to the residence and businesses in our city."

While the grand jury decision has yet to be made, the Philadelphia International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement has already taken steps to rally if Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri on Aug. 9, is not indicted.

If the demonstration happens, it would begin at Philadelphia's City Hall and head north along Broad Street, ending when the group reaches Cecil B. Moore Avenue.

"I think that it's everyone's right to have a peaceful protest if they like," said Emily Opperman, a Temple University senior.

The organization will not march if the grand jury indicts Wilson, who is currently on paid leave from the force.

The decision is expected to come down in the next few days and potential charges range from first-degree murder to involuntary manslaughter.

Ahead of the grand jury decision, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a sate of emergency and activated the National Guard. President Obama urged calm, telling ABC News citizens have the right "to protest actions that they think are unjust, but using any event as an excuse for violence is contrary to rule of law and contrary to who we are."

Philadelphia Police reiterated Obama's words.

"We will work to ensure that people can express their 1st Amendment right in a peaceful and safe manner."

A man is in custody after he allegedly kidnapped his own children and then led police on a wild chase through Darby and Philadelphia.

The ordeal began Friday around 10:45 p.m. after Mateen Jones, 36, of Philadelphia found out his ex-wife was out and had left their two children at her mother’s house in Darby Township, police told NBC10.

Jones, who police said was intoxicated at the time, allegedly drove to his former mother-in-law’s home, kicked in the door and grabbed his two sons, ages six and one.

Jones then placed them in his truck and drove off without buckling their seatbelts, according to investigators.

The boys’ grandmother then contacted police and gave a description of her former son-in-law’s truck to responding officers.

Police told NBC10 officers eventually spotted Jones’ truck and attempted to pull him over. Jones allegedly refused to stop however and continued traveling with his children inside.

Not wanting to engage in an all-out pursuit due to the children being inside the truck, police helicopters shined lights on Jones’ truck, allowing police cars to follow.

Jones drove along I-95 and ended up in South Philadelphia, police said. The chase finally ended on the railroad tracks near Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Reed Street after two of his tires blew out, according to investigators.

Jones was arrested and charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of children, DUI, fleeing or attempting to allude and other related offenses. Police also told NBC10 Jones was driving with a suspended license.

He is currently being held in the Delaware County Prison.

None of the children were hurt during the incident.

A driver chasing after the gunman who shot his friend struck a responding police officer with his car, according to investigators.

The ordeal began Saturday at 5:14 p.m. when a gunman opened fire and an unidentified man was shot six times.

When the gunman started to flee the scene, a friend of the victim began to chase after him in his car, according to police. As he was chasing after the suspect, the driver struck a police officer who had just arrived at the scene of the shooting, investigators said.

"A friend of this male allegedly was going after the shooter and a police officer tried to stop the car," said Philadelphia Police Sergeant John Gushue. "This person struck the officer with the car."

The officer suffered scrapes and bruises to his arms and legs. He was taken to Episcopal Hospital and then later released. The shooting victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.

The driver who allegedly struck the officer while chasing after the gunman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle on a police officer.

The initial gunman remains on the loose though police were able to recover his weapon at the scene. They have not yet revealed a description of the suspect.

Man Killed During Hunting Trip With Dad: Police

A man was shot and killed during a hunting trip with his father in West Windsor, New Jersey, according to police.

The accidental shooting occurred Saturday afternoon on the 1200 block of Old Trenton Road. Officials have released little information on the incident so far but said a man in his 70's and his 45-year-old son were hunting Canada geese on a large property they owned. The father and son were properly licensed to hunt the birds, according to investigators.

Police initially told NBC10 the elderly man accidentally shot his son in the back of the head. However, they later told NBC10 the victim died from a gunshot wound to the head and neck from his own firearm.

Responding police officers and medics found the victim in a patch of woods on the property. After several life saving attempts were made he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The initial call was for a hunting accident out here at the farm," said West Windsor Township Police lieutenant Matthew Kemp. "Medics and police officers were immediately dispatched and came across a person who was obviously deceased. Everything appears to be an accident. We're just dotting the "I's" and crossing the "T's" to be sure that's what it is."

Police also said the father and son were the only two people in the hunting party.

West Windsor Police and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident. They have not yet released the victim’s identity. An autopsy is scheduled for next week.

Mayfair Tire Slasher Tries to Damage SEPTA Vehicle: Police

A man already on probation for slashing the tires of dozens of cars in Philadelphia’s Mayfair community was arrested again after he allegedly tried to vandalize a SEPTA vehicle.

David Toledo, 46, was arrested and charged with harassment, possessing an instrument of crime with intent and criminal mischief.

A SEPTA employee told police he was sitting inside his vehicle parked on the corner of 1600 Creston Street Wednesday at 5:30 a.m. when he spotted a man, later identified by police as Toledo, bending down near the vehicle’s tire. Another SEPTA employee who was parked near the area told police he also spotted Toledo placing an object near the tire.

Toledo then walked back to his home on the same street, according to the witnesses.

The first SEPTA employee told investigators he looked at the object Toledo allegedly placed and found a glue mouse trap with several nails attached to the glue side.

Toledo was later arrested at his home without incident. He was taken into custody on 10% of $25,000 bail.

Toledo first made headlines when he was arrested and later sentenced after he slashed the tires of more than 50 cars near his former home in the Mayfair section of the city. Prior to his arrest and conviction, Toledo spoke to NBC10 several times when the tire slashings were first reported.

"I hope the cops get them before the neighbors find out who it is because something bad is going to happen," said Toledo after cars were vandalized in March, 2012. "My wife said 'somebody is watching us watching the cops' because when they're here nothing happens."

Authorities said Toledo, a butcher, also slashed his own tires to seek media attention.

"This will be the last time that you're going to get my car because you will get caught," Toledo told NBC10 after his tires were slashed. "The $10,000 reward, I don't want the money, all I want is their hands so I can smash them so they can never do it again."

After his conviction, Toledo was sentenced to two years of probation, avoiding jail time.

Toledo is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 23 in connection to the latest incident.
