A New Jersey martial arts instructor has been arrested on charges he sexually assaulted a girl multiple times inside a studio he co-owns, authorities say.

George Mendoza-Valentino, 27, of Saddle Brook, had inappropriate sexual relations with a 13-year-old student at the ATA Academy in Springfield, according to the Union County prosecutor.

Authorities said he also sent the girl explicit video and photos, and asked her to send some in return.

Mendoza-Valentino was arrested in the studio on Morris Avenue Thursday night, and charged with second-degree sexual assault and child endangerment.

The martial arts studio, which teaches both children and adults, was closed Friday, and a note on the door stated it would reopen Monday. A posting on its Facebook page said classes were canceled due to "an emergency situation."

Calls and emails to the studio were not immediately returned.

Mendoza-Valentino remains in jail on $125,000 bail. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Springfield police are concerned about other potential victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact them.

A former New Jersey firefighter and son of a councilwoman and another man have been charged with illegally renting out homes under foreclosure through Craigslist.

Terrence Ward and Adam Kull were arrested and charged this week in the alleged scheme by Winslow Township Police.

Investigators said the men would advertise Winslow Township, New Jersey homes for rent on Craigslist, show prospective renters the property and then collect security deposits and first months rent and allow them to move in.

Ward, 35, and Kull, 34, didn't own or manage the properties, however.

The men would find vacant homes that were in the final stages of foreclosure to rent out, police said.

Ward would handle communication with the potential tenants and both men would show off properties, according to police.

Police said they've been investigating the scam since it was reported to them in July when a homeowner found strangers living in their vacant home. Since then, police received several more complaints from residents.

Detectives had been searching for Ward for several days. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Wednesday. His mother, Judy Ward, is a councilwoman in Pleasantville declined to comment at the time, but said she didn't believe the charges were true "because of his integrity."

Both men are charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy and are being held on bail in the county prison.

Police Save 51 People With Overdose Drug

Camden County Police officers have saved the lives of 51 people over the past six months by using the medicine Narcan to reverse drug overdoses.

The two most recent saves happened this week.

Late Sunday, Officer Fernando Badillo reversed a man's heroin overdose inside a vacant home along the 500 block of S. 8th Street, police said. The man was unresponsive when the officer arrived and regained consciousness after the drug was administered, according to police. He was taken to Cooper University Hospital for treatment.

On Monday afternoon, Officer Edwin Cortez revived an unconscious man laying on the corner of Broadway and Royden Street, police said. The man had also overdosed on heroin, police said. He was hospitalized.

Camden, like Philadelphia, has been dealing with a major opioid epidemic over the past few years. Police have been cracking down on drug dealers and users over the past few months and are crediting Narcan as a way to help in their battle.

"Each one of these individuals who officers saved from a potentially fatal overdose has a family who loves them and deserves every chance to help their loved one reclaim his or her life from the grip of addiction," Camden County Police Chief Scott Thompson said in a statement.

The nasal spray was deployed in Camden in May. It came to the city after Gov. Chris Christie expanded a pilot program that was underway in Ocean and Monmouth counties.

Now, every law enforcement department in New Jersey has access to the antidote.

Stereotypical? College Ad Campaign Sparks Controversy

A new ad campaign for a local college featuring a picture of a black man holding a basketball sparked controversy as well as a response from the school.

The advertisement for Harcum College, a two-year independent residential college located in Brwyn Mawr, Pennsylvania, shows a black man in a business suit holding a basketball while standing under a hoop. It also shows a woman with a stethoscope dressed in scrubs.

The ad is featured on 23 SEPTA buses throughout the city. After seeing one of the ads, Nyasha Junior, an assistant Hebrew Bible/Old Testament professor at the Howard University School of Divinity, questioned the marketing campaign on Twitter. Other Twitter users accused the campaign of perpetuating stereotypes about black men.

Junior asked for a response from Harcum College. A spokesperson for Harcum eventually responded and offered to speak with her on the phone. Junior demanded a public statement however. The school then tweeted a response from Urick T. Lewis, the Interim Dean of Harcum.

“Harcum College is extremely proud of our diverse student body, where 42% of our students are African American,” Lewis wrote. “We're also proud of our Sports Management program, which is popular and growing quickly. Finally, we often seek to promote our basketball team, which reached the final four last year in the NJCAA National Tournament. The bus ad that some people have discussed on Twitter highlights many of these achievements.”

A spokeswoman for Harcum also released a statement to NBC10 regarding the controversy:

As a diverse campus community, we are sensitive to and aware of the problems that arise from racial stereotypes in advertising. Our advertising regularly portrays a variety of male and female students in different majors and with different ethnic backgrounds. The one image of a student with a basketball is a tribute to and a promotion of our sports management major and our basketball team that went to the NJCAA Final Four championships last year. At Harcum, we believe students like the one depicted in this ad can succeed at both athletics and academics.

We're even engaging with our student leaders on this matter, as the review of the differing opinions expressed on social media is a valuable opportunity for them to learn and present their own views on how different people view the same ad and reach different conclusions.

Mustafa Rashed, the president of the Bellevue Media Group, which created the campaign for Harcum, also released a response.

“For Harcum’s campaign, the imagery speaks to whom the program promotes and who we’re trying to recruit – college bound students who want to pursue a career in the business of athletics,” Rashed wrote. “I imagine if it was the business of Aeronautical Space Design Management the imagery would have been of a rocket ship. Or if it were in the business of retail management the imagery would have shown a retail store manager. What a scandal that would have been. But it is not rocket science is it? Right? It is Sports Management, the business of sports. And showing a young (seemingly prosperous) man as an executive makes perfect sense. It is thoughtful, connecting and appropriate. And it takes a huge leap to turn this into any kind of negative stereotype as has been suggested.”

You can read his full response here.
