Ex-NFL Cheerleader Accused of Sex With Teen

A former Baltimore Ravens cheerleader and the estranged wife of a prominent Maryland energy executive has been arrested and charged in connection with a sexual relationship involving a 15-year-old boy.

Delaware State Police said Wednesday that 47-year-old Molly Shattuck was indicted Monday on two counts of third-degree rape, four counts of unlawful sexual contact and three counts of providing alcohol to minors.

Shattuck's attorney did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday and her Baltimore home phone rang unanswered.

Police say a 15-year-old boy reported that Shattuck began an inappropriate relationship with him near Baltimore and that it culminated with sexual activity at a vacation rental home in Bethany Beach, Delaware over Labor Day weekend.

Shattuck is separated from Mayo Shattuck, former CEO of Baltimore-based Constellation Energy Nuclear Group.

New Surveillance Video Released in Woman's Abduction

Three days after her abduction off a Philadelphia street, Carlesha Freeland-Gaither's family continued to staple missing posters to poles in the neighborhood where she was taken.

"It's been three days now and nothing. We're just hoping that it doesn't keep going without answers," said Ana Mulero, the woman's grandmother.

"Inside I'm broken. I just want answers," she said.

Answers remain scarce, even as investigators piece together new clues in their search.

The FBI released new surveillance video of the person of interest Wednesday afternoon, as authorities try to find him and the missing 22-year-old victim.

The video was recorded Sunday afternoon, the day of the abduction, at a grocery store in Philadelphia. Officials have not released the store's location, but are asking the public to look at the way the man walks, his clothing and what he purchased.

Local and federal investigators expanded their investigation outside of Philadelphia on Tuesday after learning the man, similar in description to the person captured on surveillance video violently kidnapping Freeland-Gaither, used her ATM card in Aberdeen, Maryland. That happened on Monday less than 8 hours after the abduction and 75 miles south of the scene.

Philadelphia Police named him as a person of interest, FBI agents collected forensic evidence from the bank and a gas station and new surveillance images were released.

Still, his identity remains unclear to authorities and Freeland-Gaither's family.

"Part of me makes me believe that this was random, but part of me when they talked about her ATM card being used in Maryland, it might maybe be somebody that she knows. You know, I'm not really sure," Mulero said.

The person of interest is not familiar to the family, but after watching new video showing the abduction, Freeland-Gaither's mother, Kesha Gaither, believes her daughter somehow knew the man. The video, released Tuesday night, shows the man approach the woman from behind at the corner of Greene and W. Coulter Streets. They appear to shake hands before he lunges and pushes her out of view.

"You see it's clear that, like, she knew him. She had to knew him. It was too calm, he was too calm. Like he timed her. Like he was out to come get her. Like she was his target," Keisha Gaither said.

The original video picks up there. Showing the man pulling Freeland-Gaither down the block and into a waiting gray metallic Ford Taurus. She struggles to get away and busts out the back windows of the car, but can't escape.

Smart, caring and full of life, Freeland-Gaither works as a nursing aide at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center's cancer center, according to her family. They call her a fighter, a trait displayed in the surveillance video of the attack.

"All we want to do is send our granddaughter back. Just send her back," Mulero said.

The reward for the capture and conviction of her kidnapper has climbed to $47,000 with money put up by the city, FBI, Citizens Crime Commission, Fraternal Order of Police and Philadelphia Federal Credit Union.

Billboards with the woman's photo will also be put up along Interstate 95 with the hope of gleaning some information about her whereabouts, an FBI spokesperson said.

Philadelphia Police are asking for anyone with information to call their tipline at 215.686.TIPS.

Residents in a Delaware County home, where an armed home invasion occurred last month, opened fire on police officers Wednesday morning as they tried to serve a warrant.

Local police knocked on the door of a home on the 100 block of Lafayette Avenue, near MacDade Boulevard, in Collingdale, Pennsylvania around 6 a.m. and moments later someone inside the house started shooting, according to officials.

Officers returned fire and a standoff ensued before authorities were able to take the male suspect and his parents into custody.

One officer was hurt during the gunfire exchange when his finger was cut by broken glass or shrapnel, investigaors said.

Local authorities were serving a warrant at the home, where four armed men held a family at gunpoint Oct. 1, on behalf of Philadelphia Police.

A New Jersey police officer was saved by a bulletproof vest after being shot, allegedly by a suspect on a bicycle, Wednesday morning, law enforcement sources say.

The sources say the East Orange police officer was fired upon several times during a stop on North Oraton Parkway at about 11:30 a.m.

The officer, who had been hit in an area covered by the vest, fired back three times. All three shots missed the suspect, who then ran off.

More officers arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting and the suspect was apprehended.

The officer was taken to Newark University Hospital by a fellow officer in unknown condition. Sources said the bullet did not appear to penetrate the vest.

No other injuries were reported.

It's not clear why the suspect was stopped, or what charges the person may face.

Oily Sheen Floats Down Schuylkill River

What was the oily sheen floating down the Schuylkill River Wednesday?

That’s what NBC10 asked of city and federal officials after being alerted to the oily, rainbow-colored, mass visible from the Schuylkill River Path throughout the day Wednesday.

Photos hit social media starting Wednesday morning and by Wednesday afternoon the sheen was visible from NBC10’s Comcast Tower camera as it floated past Locust Street.

NBC10 called Mayor Michael Nutter’s office as well as federal officials as we tried to figure out what caused the sheen.

After becoming alerted to the possible slick, mayor’s office spokesman Mark McDonald said that the city had alerted the United States Coast Guard of the event since it occurred in Coast Guard controlled waters below the Fairmount Dam. McDonald said the city’s Office of Emergency Management would also look into the event.

The Coast Guard confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that they would be sending a crew to investigate the event.

The Region 3 office of the federal Environmental Protection Agency also became aware of the oily-like slick and would be investigating, according to spokesman David Sternberg.

None of the agencies gave a timetable on when they might find out what caused the sheen and where it came from.

Abduction Suspect Once Held Ex-Wife Captive

0
0

Delvin Barnes, the man accused of abducting Carlesha Freeland-Gaither off a Philadelphia street, has an extensive criminal history, including one incident in which he held his estranged wife captive, according to court documents. Police said the "vicious predator" is also a suspect in the abduction and rape of a Virginia teenager.

Barnes, 37, was arrested along the side of a road in Jessup, Maryland, Wednesday, officials said. Freeland-Gaither, the nurse’s aide he allegedly kidnapped Sunday, was rescued from his car at the same location and taken to a nearby hospital in Columbia, Maryland.

Barnes, who has ties to Philadelphia and Virginia, is being held on a bench warrant out of Virginia for alleged capital attempted murder in Charles City County. He will be charged federally in connection to Freeland-Gaither’s kidnapping, police said.

Delvin Barnes' uncle Lamar Barnes told NBC10 his nephew's father is a minister and he was raised by good parents. Despite this, he also told NBC10 he isn't "necessarily surprised" by the allegations against his nephew.

"Some men grew up having problems with women, so they take it out on women," Barnes said. "Apparently, he's one of them."

Court documents reveal Barnes has a lengthy criminal history, including an incident several years ago in which he was accused of holding his estranged wife captive inside her Philadelphia home.

On Nov. 28, 2005, Barnes’ estranged wife returned to her home around 9:45 p.m., according to court records. Officials said she had a protective order against Barnes due to past abuse.

As she was going to bed around 10:15 p.m., Barnes jumped out of her bedroom closet and tried to talk to her, record say. She then told him to leave or she would call police, but Barnes refused, according to court records.

As she went to call 911, Barnes jumped on top of her, grabbed her face and began digging his nails into her skin, court records say. He allegedly hit her in the face, choked her and threatened to kill her.

Barnes then allegedly told her he’d only stop beating her if she took off her clothes. The woman told police she removed her clothes, fearing for her life. She accused Barnes of forcing her to have sex with him three separate times throughout the night, and she told police Barnes forced her to give him oral sex and threatened her with several objects.

The next morning, the woman begged Barnes to let her use the phone and call her parents, telling him she talked to her mother everyday, officials said. As she spoke to her mom, she was able to indicate she was in trouble and told her mother to call 911, according to investigators.

A short time later, the woman’s mother and father walked into the home. As he heard them come in, Barnes, enraged, began to beat the victim again, according to court records. The records say the victim’s father ran into the room with a baseball bat and tried to get Barnes off his daughter. Barnes then allegedly began to beat the victim’s mother, ran into the kitchen and grabbed a knife.

The woman and her parents then ran to a neighbor’s home and called 911 as Barnes fled the scene, police said.

The next day, on Nov. 30, Barnes was found by officers patrolling the area. He was arrested after he tried to flee.

According to court records, Barnes was found guilty in 2006 of aggravated assault, criminal trespassing, false imprisonment, simple assault, reckless endangerment and other offenses for the attack. He was acquitted of rape, unlawful restraint, burglary and attempted involuntary deviant sexual intercourse.

Barnes was also arrested in Virginia in July and accused of making a bomb threat, which is a felony. That charge was amended to trespassing, a misdemeanor, and the case was finally dropped on Oct. 24, court records show.

Authorities later issued a warrant for his arrest related to a teen rape case he was being investigated for in Charles City County, Virginia.

The teen was reported missing back on Oct. 1. Two days later, the girl arrived at a business on Route 106 in Charles City County, Virginia, two miles from Barnes’ home, investigators said. The girl was naked, bleeding and covered in burns from gasoline and bleach, according to police.

Federal authorities said the charges for that case attempted capital murder, assault, malicious injury with acid, forcible rape and other related offenses.

"If he was somebody I didn't know, I'd say whatever they do to him is fine," Lamar Barnes said. "He's my nephew — the same thing. What am I gonna do? It's hard for me to accept the viciousness of it."

Abduction Suspect Also Accused of Raping Teen

The man accused of abducting a woman off a Philadelphia street is also a suspect in the abduction and rape of a Virginia teen.

Delvin Barnes, 37, was arrested Wednesday along the side of a road in Jessup, Maryland. Barnes was caught on surveillance video abducting 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither off a Philadelphia street Sunday, according to investigators. Freeland-Gaither was found alive in Barnes’ car Wednesday at the same location where he was arrested.

Barnes, who has ties to Philadelphia and Virginia, has an extensive criminal history, including an assault and false imprisonment conviction involving his estranged wife and most recently, charges in the rape and abduction of a 16-year-old girl from Richmond, Virginia.

The teen girl was reported missing back on Oct. 1. On Oct. 3, the girl arrived at a business on Route 106 in Charles City County, Virginia, two miles from Barnes’ home, investigators said. The girl was naked, bleeding and covered in burns from gasoline and bleach, according to police.

After a DNA test was conducted on the girl, investigators identified Barnes as the suspect Oct. 28. Barnes was arrested in Virginia in July after he was accused of making a bomb threat. That charge was amended to trespassing, misdemeanor, and the case was dropped Oct. 24, just four days before he was identified as a suspect in the teen girl’s abduction.

Barnes was then held on a bench warrant in connection to the teen girl’s abduction, which include charges of attempted capital murder, assault, malicious injury with acid, forcible rape and other related offenses. He will be charged federally in connection to Freeland-Gaither’s kidnapping, police said.
