Philly David Lynch Art Show Named #2 in the World

As the weather gets colder, the scenic view of the outdoors can be taken inside to top art shows in the country, right in your own backyard.

The City of Brotherly Love has been named as the runner up in "The 25 Must-See Museum Shows Around the World,' by ArtNet News, which is the leading resource for the international art market. The top three shows listed are currently in the United States.

At the Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphians can see "David Lynch: The Unified Field." The show will be open until Jan. 11, 2015.

The exhibition is Lynch’s first major museum exhibition in the United States, bringing together approximately 90 paintings and drawings created from 1965 to present. Much of his work has never been displayed.

A recurring theme in the exhibition is the human body combined with "organic phenomena," depicting homes filled with childhood memories, flashbacks, nightmares or passion. His paintings tell disturbing narratives depicted through paint textures, surface effects, and physical traces of his hand.

The number one art show on the list is "State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now," at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Bentonville is home to the headquarters of Walmart, where Alice Walton, Walmart heir, is the founder and benefactor of the museum.

A couple other East Coast art shows that made the list were "Nam June Paik: Becoming Robot," at Asia Society, New York City coming in at number three, and “Goya: Order and Disorder” at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at number 20.

During Saturday's auction, the bidding began at $1.5 million, according to the Premiere Estates Auction Company. The winning bid was ultimately $2,227,500. The auction company did not name the winning bidder but said he or she was a local resident.

The Stone Colonial mansion, located at 835 Mount Moro Road in Villanova, is over 10,000 square feet and sits on 3.55 acres.

The 88-year-old home includes six bedrooms, five full baths and three half baths, a 10-car garage, five fireplaces, private library and formal dining room, kitchen, master suite with fireplace, his-and-her baths and a large sitting area.

Vigil Held for Missing AC Woman

A vigil was held Saturday night for a South Jersey woman whose sudden disappearance and apparent suicide of her boyfriend have sparked fears from police and the community that foul play was involved.

The prayer vigil was held for 23-year-old Sapphire Wiggins of Atlantic City. Wiggins was reported missing October 19. Her sister told police she had not heard from her since Oct. 14. Wiggins’ car is still parked outside her apartment on North New York Avenue and several attempts to reach her on her cellphone have been unsuccessful.

Wiggins’ boyfriend, 50-year-old Kevin Shelton, was found dead in Runnemede, Camden County Oct. 18 after committing suicide, according to investigators. According to his obituary, the father of two was still married to his wife of 30 years.

"It makes me think that if he committed suicide, he could have done something to my daughter and that could be the reason for his suicide," said Wiggins' father David Wiggins. "They seemed happy. She was happy. They said they were going to get married soon. They wanted me to be there."

According to David Wiggins however, one of his sons told him there appeared to be trouble between Sapphire and Shelton shortly before her disappearance.

"He said that they were having some problems when he last saw them," David Wiggins said.

Sources told NBC10 investigators are trying to determine if there’s a connection between Shelton’s death and Wiggins’ disappearance. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is also assisting in the investigation.

Wiggins is the mother of a young son. Family members told NBC10 he's staying with his maternal grandmother as the search for his mother continues.

Wiggins is described as a black female standing 5-foot-1 and weighing 110 pounds. She also has several tattoos, including an “S” on her left wrist, a picture of a puzzle on her right wrist, the name “Jamil” on her chest and a “K” for Kevin on her ring finger.

If you have any information on Wiggins’ whereabouts, please call the Atlantic City Police Department at (609) 347-5766, or text anonymously to TIP411, beginning with the text "ACPD."

A man was shot in the leg while running from a bat-wielding woman and a gunman in a Philadelphia neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The gunman and his female accomplice approached the victim around 2:45 a.m. near 2nd and Carpenter streets in the Queen Village section of the city, police said.

The male suspect, armed with a handgun, told the victim, "you know what you did, you son of a b****!"as the woman hit him with a bat, authorities said.

The victim began running from the pair, but the man chased him and fired two shots, hitting the victim in his upper thigh, investigators said.

"I heard some bangs," said Ben Hastings, who was awoken by the gunshots. "I didn't realize at first it was a gunshot. I immediately heard people yelling at each other and some obscenities. Immediately after that the guy was saying, 'Help me! Somebody call the ambulance or the cops!'"

Hastings called 911. When police arrived they found the 36-year-old man on the ground.

"He was laying in the street for awhile," Hastings said. "He was yelling and the cops were there talking to him and he told the whole story. He was half in the road right at the intersection and there were cars going by. Someone even got dropped off in a taxi and kind of stumbled on the scene."

That person was Mike McCorry.

"I got out of the taxi and there was a man on the ground screaming," McCorry said. "He kept yelling, 'I got hit with a baseball bat!'"

Officials rushed the man to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is currently in critical condition.

Police are currently reviewing surveillance video of the incident but have not released the footage. They are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

A K-9 officer chased down a man Thursday after he allegedly stabbed another man in a north Delaware neighborhood before running away from the scene.

Ronald Taltoan, 35, is charged with several counts of assault, possessing a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.

According to investigators, Taltoan was involved in a fight with a 20-year-old man Thursday night at the Collins Park community on the 100 block of Riverview Drive in New Castle. During the scuffle, Taltoan allegedly stabbed the man in the upper torso and also injured a 21-year-old man who tried to help. Taltoan then fled the scene, police said.

Police arrived at the scene around 10:50 p.m. With the help of the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, New Castle officers set up a perimeter around the communities of Collins Park and Buttonwood. Taltoan was located in a wooded area off of Single Avenue by Canine Officer Tanyer and his loyal K-9 partner Ace. Ace helped apprehend Taltoan, according to investigators. Taltoan was treated at the hospital after he was bitten by the K-9 officer and later released.

The 20-year old victim was transported to Christiana Hospital where he received surgery. He is currently in stable condition. The 21-year-old was also treated at Christiana for non-life threatening injuries and later released.

Taltoan was arraigned and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of posting $101,000 cash bail. He was also issued a no contact order.

'Swatting' Prank Brings 30 Cops to South Jersey Home

$

A local lawmaker is calling for more severe penalties for "swatting" -- a dangerous hoax that brings police officers with guns drawn into the homes of unsuspecting families -- after 30 police officers surrounded a South Jersey house earlier this year.

Rob Richards was playing video games with friends in the basement of his Millville, Cumberland County home on a recent Saturday night when police called and ordered the group, along with Rob's mother, Laura Richards, out of the house with their hands in the air.

"The cops are just asking, 'turn on all your lights, walk outside,'" Rob described.

His sister and father, who were asleep inside, were forced outside at gunpoint.

"They had us lay down on the pavement. It was just insane," said Rob, who broadcasts his game play online through a website called Twitch. "It was absolutely wild."

Moments before police arrived at the Richards' home, a caller had told a Millville 911 dispatcher an argument among relatives at that location had turned violent.

"My mom and dad got into an argument and it got physical," the caller said. "I took the gun and I shot my dad."

"I want to kill her and kill myself," he continued. "I don't want to be alive anymore."

The call -- reporting a crime that never occurred -- was a prank meant to disrupt the game and show cops scaring Rob and his friends as more than 1,000 people watched over Twitch.

But the stunt is no joke to authorities, who said the hoax wasted taxpayer dollars and officers' time.

"It's unfortunate the taxpayers are going to have to pick up this bill," said Millville Police Lt. Jody Farabella, who added it took nearly three hours for investigators to confirm it was a hoax.

The local incident is similar to other reports of "swatting" across the country.

"They're hiding in cyberspace and they feel they can easily get away with it," said Rob Dovidio, an associate dean at Drexel University and cyber crimes expert. "It is a high-tech prank, but let's not minimize what's going on here."

"The potential for someone to get hurt is there," said Dovidio, who explained "swatting" is on the rise -- a fact Rob's mom finds particularly frustrating.

"This has to stop," Laura said. "Somebody has to be held accountable."

Her sentiments echo those of New Jersey State Assemblyman Paul Moriarty (D - 4), who plans to introduce a bill upping penalties for this crime to the legislature by the end of October.

"We need a more severe law to deal with this kind of sick and disturbing activity," Moriarty said.

A person convicted of "swatting" under current New Jersey law could end up only serving probation.

But Moriarty said he wants mandatory jail time.

"The penalty should be more severe and they should be required to pay for every dollar that was spent by the municipality to send these people out here."

The Richards still don't know who "swatted" Rob, but he is taking steps to prevent it from happening to his family again.

"We're kinda taking a break from streaming," he said.
