A man allegedly involved in a violent confrontation with a New Jersey state police detective has been captured in New York City.

Tarik Smith, of Newark, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and a weapons offense. His bail was set at $750,000 cash, and he was being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.

Authorities say the 26-year-old Smith stole a vehicle early Tuesday from a car rental agency in Newark, and the detective soon located the vehicle in a nearby area. The detective was injured in the ensuing confrontation and fired his weapon at Smith, who drove off and abandoned the car in another part of Newark.

Smith was found Tuesday night at a hospital in Harlem, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.

A man surrendered to police Wednesday morning to face charges that he struck a 7-year-old West Philadelphia girl then continued driving.

Jamar Banks, 25, faces aggravated assault, driving without a license, reckless endangerment and related charges in connection to Sunday's crash that left Allure Mclaine hospitalized.

Investigators credited "clear" video of the striking vehicle to helping them get their guy.

The crash occurred Sunday night around 6:50 at the intersection of 42nd and Pennsgrove streets. Investigators said Banks' 2014 green Mitsubishi Outlander was headed northbound on 42nd Street when he struck the girl.

The crash left the girl, identified by family members as 7-year-old Allure, with a fractured skull, broken ankle and road rash.

Medics rushed Allure to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a witness at the scene pursued the hit-and-run driver.

The witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he managed to record the vehicle's license plate as it sped through traffic lights and sent the video to police.

Authorities confirmed the footage captured the hit-and-run vehicle that matched Banks' SUV.

A Berks County teacher’s aide was arrested after she allegedly damaged an elementary school lawn while driving drunk.

Patricia Castellito, 48, of Hamburg, Pennsylvania, is a teacher’s aide at the Perry Elementary Center in Perry Township as well as the Tilden Elementary Center in Tilden Township.

Investigators say Castellito was parking her 2014 Kia Sorrento in a parking stall at Perry Elementary on N 41st Street in Shoemakersville Borough, Pa Monday around 9:20 a.m.

As Castellito pulled her vehicle out from the parking lot stall she struck a backhoe in the lot, according to investigators. She then placed her car in reverse and tried to drive forward but struck the backhoe a second time.

Castellito then once again placed her vehicle in reverse and tried to drive off at a high speed. She was unable to make a left turn in the parking lot however and  struck a curb, driving into a dirt area across from the parking lot entrance. She then struck another curb on the opposite side of the entrance.

Castellito then drove onto an area of newly planted grass before making a right turn back onto 40th Street. She then made a left onto Pine Street and stopped her vehicle. She then placed her car in reverse once again and drove back onto the curb into a front lawn. She then drove from the lawn back onto Pine Street and turned left onto 5th Street where she struck a parked car, according to police.

Witnesses approached the vehicle at the intersection and were able to remove the keys.

Castellito was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and other related offenses. She has not been officially charged with DUI but police say they are waiting for her blood test results.

Senator to College: Drop Convicted Cop Killer From Commencement

$
0
0

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey is calling for a Vermont college to rescind its offer to a convicted cop killer, Mumia Abu-Jamal, to address their fall 2014 graduates during its Oct. 5 commencement ceremony.

"I cannot fathom how anyone could think it appropriate to honor a cold-blooded murderer," The Pennsylvania Republican wrote in a letter to Goddard College interim President Robert Kenny. "What possible enlightenment can your students obtain from this man?"

Abu-Jamal, 60, is currently serving a life sentence at the Mahanoy State Correctional Institution in Frackville, Pa. for the 1981 murder of 25-year-old Philadelphia Officer Daniel Faulkner.

Students in the fall 2014 graduating class selected Abu-Jamal, who is a 1996 Goddard College graduate, as their commencement speaker, according to a college spokeswoman. Abu-Jamal also hosts a radio show that airs on WGDR-WGDH Goddard Community Radio every Sunday.

The Goddard College president did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It is unclear if they will adjust the ceremony in response to the senator's letter.

School officials announced Abu-Jamal as the speaker Monday, explaining his remarks were prerecorded and the short video will roll during the ceremony.

"Choosing Mumia as their commencement speaker, to me, shows how this newest group of Goddard graduates expresses their freedom to engage and think radically and critically in a world that often sets up barriers to do just that," Kenney said in a Goddard College news release Monday.

But Toomey disagrees, saying the dialogue sparked by including Abu-Jamal in commencement is a "slap in the face to Danny Faulkner's family, and to all of the law enforcement officers who risk their lives for us every day."

"Is there any crime so heinous that Goddard would not reward the perpetrator with a spot as commencement speaker?" Toomey asked. "This is not a question of free speech. It is a question of judgment and your school's basic sense of right and wrong."

"[What] lesson is Goddard teaching its students about their moral responsibilities, as members of a civil society, to their fellow citizens?" he continued. "Abu-Jamal has never apologized or expressed any regret for his heinous crime."

Celebrities like Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg and others have publicly expressed their support for Abu-Jamal, who has gained followers from around the world claiming he was the victim of a racist legal system.

Yet the politician points out that the killer's claims the jury was racist "has been rejected by multiple state and federal courts and is belied by the facts."

Abu-Jamal was originally sentenced to death, but prosecutors later agreed to a life term after a federal appeals court ordered a new sentencing hearing, citing flawed jury instructions.

The commencement ceremony — one of 20 Goddard holds each  year — will begin at 4 p.m. Oct.  5 at the school's Haybarn Theatre at 123 Pitkin Road in Plainfield, Vermont.

Goddard College is a liberal arts college with three locations -- Plainfield, Vermont; and Seattle and Port Townsend, Washington.

Cooper CEO, Wife Deaths 'No Threat' to Neighbors, Community

While neighbors and the public at large may be anxious to know how and why a high-profile CEO and his wife died, investigators say no one should feel unsafe or threatened.

John Sheridan Jr., the CEO of Cooper University Health System, and his wife, Joyce, died Sunday morning.

John, 72, was pronounced dead at the couple's home in Montgomery Township, New Jersey, after rescue crews came to put out a fire in the master bedroom. Joyce, 69, died a short time later at a local hospital.

Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set, but they have not said who they suspect started the fire. Autopsies were performed on Tuesday, but authorities have yet to release the results.

"The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office is currently engaged in a very complex investigation," said Capt. Jack Bennett, communications director. While investigators are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact  them, Bennett indicated on Thursday that no one should fear for their safety.

"At this point, based upon facts and circumstances learned through this investigation, we are quite confident that there exists no threat to either the immediate neighborhood or to the local community," said Bennett.

Sheridan Jr. joined Cooper in 2005. He is credited with helping transform the entire health care system and is also remembered as a community leader who was committed to revitalizing Camden.

The couple is survived by four sons.

"The death of our parents has left a hole in our hearts and family that can never be filled," the family said in a statement.  "We ask everyone to remember them as the wonderful parents and friends they were. Remember them as two People who loved each other, their family, and their friends generously and unconditionally. Remember their smiles, their hugs, and their laughter. Remember them as people who brought out the best in everyone around them.

"We cannot fathom, much less explain, the circumstances of their passing. Losing a parent is painful. Losing them both has been excruciating and we ask everyone to respect our need to privately grieve, process our loss, and support each other as the family our parents raised us to be."

Funeral arrangements for the couple have not been announced.
