A young mother is dead and her boy hospitalized after a SEPTA bus plowed into several pedestrians crossing a South Philadelphia street.

The 29-year-old woman, identified by police sources as Sheena White, was leading her 8-year-old son and a 32-year-old man with special needs across Washington Avenue at 15th Street around 7:30 p.m. Friday when they were hit by a Route 27 bus, Philadelphia Police tell NBC10.

They were in the crosswalk at the time and were struck as the bus made a left onto Washington Avenue, officials said.

"They ran in front of the bus and she was caught by the front of the bus," said Capt. Anthony Ginaldi. The woman was pulled under the front tire, he said.

When officers arrived, they found the boy trying to revive his mother. But her injuries were too severe and she died at the scene, officials said.

The boy was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he remains. His condition has not been released.

Police say the man they were with ran away from the scene. Officers located him a short time later.

There no were passengers on-board the bus at the time of the crash. On-board surveillance video has also been reviewed.

"You see the bus video, you can see the front of the bus actually strike her," Ginaldi said.

Detectives said the driver tried to stop, but couldn't in time.

No charges have been filed, according to officials. Detectives from the police department's Accident Investigation Division continue to investigate the incident.

A man driving a stolen car led police on a chase through sections of North Philadelphia Friday night.

The red Pontiac Aztec fled from police just before 8 p.m., officials said.

The car traveled through parts of North Philadelphia and then Kensington at relatively slow speeds -- hitting a sign and jumping the curb on a few occasions.

The driver eventually parked the car, got out and started walking away.

SkyForce10 and Philadelphia Police's Tactical Air Unit tracked the heavyset man, who was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, as he casually walked along a Kensington street.

Police then caught up to the man who surrendered immediately without issue. He was placed in handcuffs around 8:30 p.m. and led to a police wagon.

A series of attempted break-ins in one Bucks County development has police and residents on high alert.

The incidents all took place at the Stover Mill development in Warwick Township, Pennsylvania.

Police say they've received reports from five homeowners about the attempted burglaries. Four of the incidents took place over the past two weeks.

In one case, window screens were found pushed in, officials said. Another time, a resident heard noises and came downstairs to find their door ajar.

Last night, another resident told police she saw people shining flashlights through her windows.

"This is really the first time a bunch of these has happened in a row," said resident Chas Fean. "So people are pretty scared in the neighborhood."

Julie Hanson showed NBC10 reporter George Spencer what appeared to be hand prints on her back window. She says she didn't notice the imprints until Friday morning.

Burglars never actually made it inside a home, but the attempts have police stepping up patrols.

Officials said it remains unclear whether all of the cases are connected. They're asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to call police right away.

The search is on for whoever slashed tires on 18 cars in a Newark, Delaware neighborhood.

Police say residents in the Windy Hills development woke up Thursday to find the tires of their cars punctured by a knife.

The suspects hit 18 cars along several streets the night before as rain poured down from the skies, police said.

Residents and police are wondering whether the crime was committed by teens, who had off from school the next day.

I hope that's not the case, because I hope I live in a neighborhood that's not like that," said resident Steve Litterest. He was among those whose tires were ruined.

Residents say if police find teens slashed the tires, they should pay for the damage. If it's adults, they want to see them hauled off to jail.

Chip Kelly Sends Flowers to Devon Still’s Daughter

Chip Kelly may be all-business on the football field, but the Eagles head coach proved to be a true class act off the gridiron after he showed his support for an NFL player and his young daughter who is battling cancer at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Kelly sent a gift basket and flowers to 4-year-old Leah Still Friday after her successful operation. Leah’s father, defensive tackle Devon Still, posted a photo of the gift on his Instagram page, thanking Kelly and the Eagles.

Still and his daughter have captured the hearts of millions of people nationwide as she continues to receive treatment at CHOP. The Delaware native and former Penn State Nittany Lion was cut from the Cincinnati Bengals in August. However, the Bengals re-signed Still to their practice squad in order to help him pay for his daughter’s medical treatment after she was diagnosed with cancer.

After the Bengals decided to donate proceeds from his jersey sales to the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati and pediatric cancer care and research, Still’s No. 75 jersey quickly became the team’s top seller.

Still has kept his followers updated on his daughter’s progress, posting a video of a pep talk he gave her prior to her surgery.

Still later announced Thursday a surgeon at CHOP was able to remove her tumor, lymph nodes and right adrenal gland where her cancer originated. He also stated however that his daughter’s battle was far from over, as doctors still need to remove the cancer from her bone marrow.

A teenage girl is speaking out after her boyfriend was allegedly attacked by a group of catcallers in Southwest Philadelphia.

The 17-year-old girl, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 she was with her 20-year-old boyfriend as well as her sister on the 6500 block of Dicks Avenue around midnight when they were approached by a group of men.

“Three guys started catcalling me,” the girl said. “My boyfriend was standing next to me. He started to say, ‘That’s rude. That’s disrespectful. I’m her boyfriend and I’m right here.’”

The girl says the men then approached her boyfriend.

“They kind of made a circle around him,” she said. “They were pretty large guys. Then one man standing in front of him came out of nowhere and punched him on the side of the jaw.”

The punch knocked the man unconscious and the men fled the scene.

“Half of his jaw was separated,” the girl said. “I was screaming. My sister was screaming and people stopped. The cops came eventually.”

The man was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where his girlfriend is staying by his side.

“He’s in really bad pain,” she said. “His mouth is bleeding constantly. He will have to have surgery to get his jaw wired shut.”

The Southwest Detective Division confirmed with NBC10 they are investigating the assault though they have not yet revealed specific details on the case.

911 Calls in Deadly Bear Attack

The friends who got separated from a Rutgers student while hiking in a New Jersey nature preserve called 911 in a panic, telling the dispatcher they had just been chased by a black bear and couldn't locate their friend, who was later found dead

Police recordings released Friday capture the anxiety after the five friends from Edison got separated in the Apshawa Preserve Sunday.

"Hey, hello, I'm on Macopin Road, it's 81 Macopin Rd., I believe I'm in West Milford or somewhere around there," said a friend in the first 911 call. "We were hiking and we saw a bear, and we all started running and it started chasing us."

"Two of us are OK, one other person (unintelligible), but two are really close, and I'm scared out of my mind for them. I want to go back, but I'm hurt and I don't know what to do," the caller said.

The unidentified friend said he had scraped his leg and was more worried about his friends.

"Can anyone get here anytime really soon, please?" he said.

The dispatcher warned the caller it could take police some time to get to them if they were on a trail.

"No, no, no, but we ran one way for about two minutes, and we got onto a neighborhood," the caller said. We're at 81 Macopin Road, and we can go right into it from there."

The call was transferred to a dispatcher in nearby Bloomingdale before the call was kicked back to the first dispatcher.

"Hey, what's up, I just got told to call you 'cause if I'm not in Bloomingdale -- I need someone immediately to 581 Macopin Rd.," he said.

"Oh, 581 Macopin," the dispatcher said.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry, I read that wrong. Anyway, like, do you know how long it will take or anything of that nature?" said the caller.

The dispatcher assured him it "shouldn't be too long."

A search team found the body of Darsh Patel, 22, a short time after they arrived. Officials said Patel had bite and claw marks on his body that indicated he'd been attacked by the 299-pound black bear.

The bear was found 30 to 40 yards from Patel and euthanized at the scene, officials said. Authorities said it was 4 years old.

The New Jersey Department of Fish, Game and Wildlife, which is handling the necropsy of the bear to confirm that the animal killed Patel, and why, said Friday their examination wasn't yet complete.

It was the first fatal bear attack ever in New Jersey.

Kelcey Burguess, a black bear biologist with the department, has said it's possible the bear was diseased or rabid, but it's "very rare" for a bear to have rabies. It's more likely the bear was looking for food, he said.

The hikers told authorities the bear appeared to be following them; they were all carrying granola bars and water. The number of acorns in the woods where the bear was is far lower than it should be at this time of year, Burguess said. The bear was also stalking the body when police arrived, and Burguess said it's common for black bears to guard their food sources.

The Apshawa Preserve is a 576-acre natural area used for hiking and bird watching.

Rutgers said in a statement that Patel was a senior in the School of Arts and Sciences majoring in information technology and informatics. Patel's family asked for privacy.

A Burlington County man checked himself into the hospital Saturday after he claimed he was served raw chicken at a local Sonic restaurant.

William Dorsey of Lumberton, New Jersey told NBC10 he visited the Sonic restaurant on Route 38 in Hainesport, New Jersey Friday night and ordered chicken. As he began eating, Dorsey said he noticed something strange about the food.

“I noticed the chicken was really chewy,” Dorsey said. “When I looked at it closer I noticed the chicken wasn’t cooked at all.”

Dorsey said he began vomiting and tried several times to contact the Sonic restaurant as well as the corporate office.

The manager of the Sonic told NBC10 they were investigating Dorsey’s claim and planned on reimbursing him for the meal.

Dorsey meanwhile told NBC10 he checked himself into Virtua Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon.

There are nine Sonic locations within the greater Philadelphia area and more than 3,500 locations in 44 states, according to the company's website.
