Virginia Getaway

Missing that summer feeling? Yeah, we get it... Fall’s nice and all, but Ol' man winter's looming right around the corner. So why not jump in the car and head south for a few days?

Find a destination where you can (sort of) pretend it's still summer. Consider a place like Airlie, a historic farmhouse turned hotel, farm and conference center in northern Virginia. Spread out over 1,200 acres at the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains, it's worth the trip. Plus, you'll only spend about three hours getting there by car, so it's a do-able weekend getaway.

You can stay in one of their 150 elegantly-appointed rooms or, for more space and privacy, reserve a private cottage. It doesn't really matter since you'll’ll end up spending most of your time outdoors.

Airlie offers everything from bike and nature trails (bikes available to borrow), an outdoor pool, cooking and yoga classes, a shooting range, high and low ropes course, fishing on Lake Stanley (tackle available to borrow), tennis and volleyball courts, and even a corn maze (organic, of course).  Don’t miss a tour of the farm's four-acre garden and greenhouse where you'll harvest insider tips for growing your own fruits, veggies and flowers at home.

Once you've worked up an appetite, enjoy a farm-to-table meal in the main dining room or the Garden Bistro. Airlie's acclaimed culinary team prepares menus that highlight ingredients grown at the property or sourced from over 30 local farms. For more casual fare and a locally-crafted beer selection, visit the hotel's Whistling Swan Pub.

If wine is more your style, you’re in luck! Check out the Summer Wine-Down dinner packages, or visit more than 20 wineries nearby.

So… Whether you're craving fresh air, a do-over summer getaway or an autumn wine tour, Airlie may be just the ticket!

Police say a man in a rental sports utility vehicle struck and killed a man crossing a North Philadelphia street before dumping the vehicle nearby.

The deadly crash happened just before midnight along Allegheny Avenue near 25th Street in North Philadelphia.

A man in his 60s was crossing the street when a Honda SUV speeding in the westbound lanes struck the man, according to Philadelphia Police.

Investigators said that moments earlier an officer going in the opposite direction noticed the speeding Honda CRV blowing through traffic signals. The officer made a U-turn but the accident had already happened and the driver had fled, according to police.

The force of the impact caused the victim to land on another car that stopped at the scene. Police said the second driver tried to help the crash victim but it was too late and the man died.

Police later found the striking SUV parked nearby on a sidewalk on the 3100 block of Bambrey Street.

The driver fled the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police.

A man trying to steal from the Valley Forge National Historical Park wound up dead -- apparently electrocuted.

A man called Montgomery County 911 around 4 a.m. to report that his friend appeared to be electrocuted outside the Kennedy Supplee Mansion on S Trooper Road inside the park.

When Upper Merion Township Police arrived, officers found the victim unresponsive, partially inside a 4,100-volt electrical box on the lawn of the mansion.

First repsonders waited for PECO to turn off the electrical box before attending to the 41-year-old man. Medics pronounced the Norristown man dead at the scene.

Investigators said that it appeared the man went into the box in an attempt to steal copper wiring.

The man’s friend, who called 911, remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police asked that anyone who might have seen anything suspicious in the area on Friday night or early Saturday to call the Upper Merion Township Police Detective Division at 610-265-3232.

Aggravated assault charges have been filed against a southern New Jersey man accused in the beating of a toddler who suffered a brain injury.

Ocean County prosecutors tell the Asbury Park Press that 33-year-old Timothy Montgomery, of Manchester Township, was also charged with child endangerment. His bail was set at $100,000 cash, and it was not known Saturday if he has retained an attorney.

Authorities were notified after the 18-month-old girl was taken to a hospital in June. The child had apparently been injured two days earlier, and she underwent surgery to control the swelling of the brain.

The child's mother said she had left the girl with another person while she went to a convenience store. An investigation determined the girl's injuries were the result of "inflicted impact."

Sixers Center Crashes Wedding After "Rocky Run"

$

Sixers center Nerlens Noel got acquainted with the city of brotherly love in epic fashion on Friday, running up the Philadelphia Museum of Art and then crashing a wedding on top of the steps.

On his heels were a group of local school kids, and, by chance, participants of the Susan G. Komen Philadelphia 3-Day run.

Leading up to his “Rocky” moment, Noel spent the day with an NBA-TV crew filming a segment for NBA Rooks.

Noel, with the camera crew in tow, ran different stretches of the streets of Philadelphia that Rocky made famous training in the early mornings preparing for his big fight we all watched on the silver screen.

"I did a decent amount," Noel said of how far he ran. "I have to make sure I keep my body right. It is a special thing we are doing. It is great to have the kids here, sharing the Rocky thing. It has been a great day so far.

"When I was just on the street (in the Italian Market) there was so much love. Guys were throwing me apples and oranges. It was kind of like the movie. You can see how Rocky started here. I am blessed to be here."

Fittingly, the shoot ended at the Art Museum steps where a wedding was taking place. Noel then took a selfie with the wedding party posing behind him.

The Sixers went 19-63 a season ago, posting the second-fewest wins in the league. Noel, the No. 6 overall pick in 2013, was sidelined because of injury for all 82 games.

Though he has yet to take the court for the Sixers, Noel still draws fans everywhere.

"It means the world to me to have people behind us, cheering for us, and wanting us to do well and bring a winning mentality here," Noel said. "That is what we are in the process of. We are going to do whatever we have to do to get to the promised land for the city of Philadelphia."

The process is coming along, but is still far from being achieved.

One player who may help the franchise reach the promised land is playing overseas for the next couple years.

Noel, Michael Carter-Williams, rookie Joel Embiid, head coach Brett Brown and team president/general manager Sam Hinkie traveled to Spain for the World Championships earlier this month to support Dario Saric playing for Croatia.

Saric was selected No. 12 overall in June and later traded to the Sixers. His immediate future is in Turkey, but the Sixers hope his long-term success is in the City of Brotherly Love.

"We all went over there willingly," Noel said of the trip. "Once Coach and Sam mentioned it to us we were all on board. Dario is a great kid. We watched him for the first time, other than seeing highlights on YouTube.

"He can do a lot on the court and I am ecstatic about getting him over here. He is going to take his time, but in time, the time will be right."

In the meantime, Noel and his current teammates are getting ready for training camp. The Sixers will hold their camp at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Galloway Township beginning Sept. 30.
