Escapee Accused of Stabbing Officer Due in Court

A man who police say stabbed a Bucks County officer while on the lam is set to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

Matthew Miller has remained behind bars, unable to post $5 million bail, after the June incident  that left a Bensalem Police officer with stab wound to his stomach.

Less than an hour after receiving notification that 23-year-old Matthew Miller had escaped from his Bucks County Prison work release program in Doylestown, he was spotted by officers in the area of Bristol Pike and Woodhaven Road in Bensalem around 1:30 p.m. on June 10.

Officer Michael Jachimski, 38, quickly responded by stopping the prisoner.

Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said Miller was almost handcuffed when he pulled out a knife and lunged at Jachimski, stabbing him in the abdomen. The officer's vest took the brunt of the knife wound and Jachimski was not seriously injured. He tried to stun Miller, who then hopped into the officer's cruiser, a black and white Ford Explorer, and sped away, authorities say.

A short time later, police say Miller jumped from the vehicle on Fairdale Drive and took off on foot.

Officers apprehended Miller about two miles away from the stabbing on a playground near an elementary school in Philadelphia, according to Harran.

Police officers eventually recovered the vehicle as well as the knife used in the assault, according to officials.

No children were hurt in the incident, and the officer was taken to a local hospital where he was examined and released without injury.

"This is just another great story of how a bulletproof vest, from not a bullet, but a knife, saved a life," Harran said.

Miller faces a slew of charges including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, escape, reckless endangerment and grand theft auto.

Seven people were injured, one of them critically, in a multi-vehicle accident in the Lincoln Tunnel that brought traffic to a near standstill at the peak of Tuesday's morning rush, authorities say.

A minibus and two other vehicles were involved in the accident in the tunnel's inbound center tube around 8:30 a.m., the Port Authority said. The agency said a red BMW sped into the tunnel and collided with a Mercedes van, which collided with the minibus.

A passenger in the Mercedes van had trouble breathing and the emergency was called in as one of cardiac arrest, the Port Authority said. Two other people were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The other four victims refused medical attention at the scene, Port Authority officials said.

The center tube remained closed throughout the morning. All New York City-bound traffic has to use the south tube.

Traffic 4 NY was reporting delays of up to 90 minutes to the toll plaza and traffic backed up to the New Jersey Turnpike.

No charges have been filed.

Chopper 4 showed traffic barely moving as several lines of cars merged.

Girl Was Speeding Before Crash That Killed 3 Boys: Witness

A northeastern Pennsylvania district attorney is investigating whether a 15-year-old girl, driving an SUV packed with teens, was speeding around a curve when the vehicle crashed this weekend, killing three boys from Bucks County.

Ryan Lesher, Shamus Digney and Cullen Keffer, all 15-year-old sophomores at Council Rock High School South in Holland, Pennsylvania, died after the 2001 Chevy Suburban flipped over several times along Goose Pond Road in Paupack Township on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Along with the driver, a 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were also injured in the one-vehicle crash, officials said.

Wayne County D.A. Janine Edwards said the girls picked up the boys from the Wallenpaupack Lake Estates development and went to a breakfast spot. On the way back, the district attorney said a witness saw the SUV traveling at high speed right before the right tire left the asphalt. It was then, at the curve, that the vehicle flipped over, officials said.

Lesher, Digney and Keffer were taken to a medical center in Scranton and pronounced dead. The two girls and the fourth boy, who is also from Bucks County, were treated and released from area hospitals as well, officials said.

The driver's name has not been released, but officials believe she is from the Westchester County, New York, area. They say her father owns a home in the development where the teens were staying.

It is unclear whether the 15-year-old girl had a license to drive. In both Pennsylvania and New York, you must be 16 years-old to obtain a driving permit, according to both state's department of motor vehicles.

Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the crash. Edwards said when criminal charges are filed, they will be done so under the state's juvenile crime laws.

The boys who died were all athletes at Council Rock South. The school has been offering grief counseling for the past two days. A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to honor the teens, school officials said.

SEPTA Renaming Market East Station

SEPTA is poised to rename one of its largest transit hubs on behalf of a corporate sponsor this week.

The transit authority is expected to announce Thursday that it will rename the Market East Station in Center City Philadelphia to Jefferson Station -- on behalf of the Jefferson Health System.

SEPTA and Jefferson officials would not comment on the matter to NBC10 ahead of Thursday's event. But a map for the Market-Frankford El posted to SEPTA's website already shows the name change.

The tech-centric website Technically Philly first posted a photo of a SEPTA rail map showing the health system's logo at Market East's current location. The site said the picture was provided by a tipster.

Market East is one of SEPTA's busiest stations connecting the El, bus lines and regional rail trains to The Gallery at Market East shopping mall. Thomas Jefferson University and its trauma center sit just three blocks south of the station.

The change marks the second time SEPTA has chosen to sell the naming rights to a station. The former Pattison Avenue stop on the Broad Street Subway was renamed AT&T Station in 2010. The five-year deal netted $5 million for the transit authority.

Last year, SEPTA showed NBC10.com the new ways it was using advertising to raise cash including wrapping its regional rail trains in ads. A spokesperson said then that SEPTA was considering renaming other stations.

Suburban Station could be next. The Philadelphia Inquirer says rumors have been swirling that Verizon or Comcast could nab up the name for the regional rail hub. (Comcast is the parent company of NBC10.)

Temple University Expands Police Patrol Boundary

The Temple University Police Department (TUPD) will continue to patrol areas west of the school's North Philly campus, extending a pilot program it began in August to improve response time to its off-campus residential student population.

“With Temple Police providing the same level of protection and responsiveness to students and residents alike, we are confident that the extended patrol zone will create a safe environment and strengthen the quality of life for everyone who lives around Main Campus,” said Charles L. Leone, executive director of Campus Safety Services, to the Temple News.

The western patrol borders were moved to 18th Street from 16th Street. The remaining patrol boundaries -- east to 9th Street, north to Susquehanna Avenue and south to Jefferson Street -- remain the same.

The decision to expand the TUPD patrol area comes a few months after a gang of teenage girls assaulted a 19-year-old student with a brick, breaking her jaw and dislocating her teeth. The attack -- one of three reported by students -- happened just outside of the TUPD's primary patrol area.

The assaults led students and parents to demand security changes at the North Philly-based school.

Since enacting the expansion with the start of fall semester, one crime was reported in the newly patrolled blocks -- public drunkenness.

Temple security will continue to maintain a daily crime log, TU Alerts and other forms of communication with students and neighbors.

Outburst by Alleged Child Rapist Clears Courtroom

An emotional outburst by Christina Regusters prompted the jury to be ushered from a Philadelphia courtroom on Wednesday afternoon during the woman's kidnapping and rape trial.

"I never touched your child. She's lying," the 21-year-old yelled as she listened to testimony from her cousin Katrina Regusters.

The cousin told prosecutors Christina abused her 11-year-old daughter three times in the past.

Tears were seen flowing from the defense table, the witness stand and from people in the courtroom. The jury was removed from court amid the commotion as the defendant tried to leave herself.

"I need to go. I can't stay here," Christina Regusters said to bailiffs seated nearby.

In that same moment, she stood up from her seat and a turned to walk toward the very door she enters and exits from every day. Officers held her there and gave her water until she calmed down. Then, they escorted her from the courtroom as she sobbed into a tissue.

Before the blow-up, the 11-year-old accuser also took the stand. She testified Christina Regusters allegedly abused her twice at a family home and once at the daycare where the woman worked.

The woman also allegedly told the girl 'This is how my father used to touch me' during an assault, according to the girl.

But the 11-year-old's timeline was called into question when dates did not match up. She recanted her first testimony before asking for paper to work out her age at the time of the alleged assaults.

Christina Regusters' attorney claimed the timing was wrong because the girl was lying.

The courtroom fireworks came on the same day the defendant took the stand and her attorney scored a win by having a statement she made to police suppressed.

Christina Regusters stands charged with kidnapping a 5-year-old girl from her Cobbs Creek Elementary School last February, holding her for 19 hours and brutally raping her with a sharp object. The girl was then dumped in a playground.

Fred Harrison, Christina Regusters' attorney, began the day at Judge Jeffrey Minehart's bench motioning to have the woman's Feb. 14, 2013 statement suppressed. He said Regusters was not read her Miranda rights before talking to police.

The judge later ruled in favor with the motion as long as Regusters doesn't take the stand. Should she, the judge said, then the statement would be fair game for prosecutors.

Before making the decision, Regusters was pulled on the stand for 30 minutes to answer procedural questions about what she said to police. Harrison, her attorney, argued that she was under duress when she talked. The jury was not in the room at the time.

"Whoever was writing the statement was leading me. I just wanted to go home. I told him I would give him answers, whatever it was," said Regusters.

Prosecutor Erin O’Brien asked Regusters if she was a liar. She responded that some of her statements, including those about the crime, were not true.

The woman testified she knew about details about the crime because she and other workers at the daycare where she worked and the young victim attended discussed the case.

“I feel as though I was outside watching from another place. As if someone else was speaking besides myself,” said Regusters of her police interview.

The two detectives who questioned her that night were also called up to answer questions and one admitted she was not read her rights.

Prosecutors pointed to the fact that she didn't make a written request for an attorney on her statement as a point that she made the statement freely. But, Regusters said she verbally asked for one.

The court also heard about Regusters herself being the victim of abuse in the past. She talked about time in 2005 when her father allegeldy sexually assaulted her. When asked if she also lied about that, she replied no.

Court was adjourned for the day after the outburst. It is set to continue on Thursday with more testimony from Katrina Regusters.
