Flood Advisory Issued for Philly Burbs; Thunderstorms Roll In

0
0

Storms are heading across the Delaware Valley, bringing gusty winds and a flood advisory to parts of our region.

The flood advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect for portions of Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania and parts of Camden Gloucester and Burling counties in New Jersey until 7:45 p.m.

An initial advisory also included parts of Berks and Lehigh counties.

The advisory warns that a line of storms stretching from northern Delaware to the suburbs north of Philadelphia could bring one to two inches of rain, which will cause rivers and streams to rise.

Rain began falling in parts of Chester County around 3 p.m. The showers will likely push into Philly around 4:30 p.m. -- which could bring relief to what has been a hot and sticky day.

High temperatures in the city hovered around 90 degrees, but the humidity made it feel 97 degrees outside.

Holiday travelers enjoying Labor Day weekend at the Jersey Shore will see showers sometime after 7 p.m.

Winds should pick up throughout the afternoon for beachgoers as the storms continue to move east.

But the system will likely break up by the time it reaches the coast, lessening the chance of rain for some Shore towns.

Heavy rain and flashes of lightning forced officials to order fans attending the Made in America music festival to leave the area and seek shelter.

Attendees at the music festival located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway heard the music cut out around 6:15 p.m. Sunday and then an announcement came over the speakers ordering the crowds to evacuate.

About ten minutes later, a tweet from the Made in America's official account urged fans to remain calm as they left the site.

The decision was made jointly -- officials from the City of Philadelphia, Roc Nation and Live Nation made the call to evacuate together, according to the city government's official twitter account.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather advisory for Philadelphia and surrounding counties just before 4 p.m. Sunday.

"Showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight could produce locally heavy rain, potentially leading to flooding in poor drainage areas," according to the NWS advisory.

Fans were advised to hold on to their tickets to make reentering the grounds as easy as possible.

About an hour after thousands of people heading out of the festival site, officials told fans they could return.

Adjustments were made to the performance schedule to ensure each act still made the stage. Here are the updated start times:

7:45 p.m. - Spoon at the Rocky Stage

8:25 p.m. - Girl Talk at the Liberty Stage

8:45 p.m. - Gareth Emery at the Freedom Stage

9:05 p.m. -  Pharrell Williams at the Rocky Stage

9:55 p.m. - Tiesto at the LIberty Stage

10:45 p.m. - Kings of Leon at the Rocky Stage

Showboat Closes After 27 Years in Atlantic City

0
0

The show is over for the Showboat Casino Hotel.

The Mardi Gras-themed casino shut down Sunday after 27 years on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It was one of three casinos closing within the next two weeks as Atlantic City deals with the impact of increasing competition from casinos in neighboring states. Revel will begin a two-day closing Monday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16.

One of the final songs piped in over the Showboat's loudspeakers: Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust."

"We're all feeling a little betrayed," Showboat cook Curtis Wade said. "We're all walking around in a fog today. We worked really hard to try to keep it operating, and we're still profitable. We still don't understand why we were the one targeted to close, and nobody has given us an answer on that. There are too many jobs being pushed out of Atlantic City due to corporate greed."

Wade will be among the thousands of workers showing up at the Atlantic City Convention Center on Wednesday for a mass unemployment filing.

The Showboat's owner, Caesars Entertainment, closed the still-profitable casino to reduce the number of casinos in Atlantic City, which has been struggling with plunging revenue and increased competition in the saturated northeastern U.S. casino market.

The Showboat stopped admitting new customers at 3 p.m. Sunday. At 4 p.m., security guards emerged to tape to the glass doors paper signs that read, "Closed."

Inside the casino, recordings urged customers to patronize Caesars Entertainment's three remaining casinos in Atlantic City: Caesars, Harrah's and Bally's.

Caesars Entertainment CEO Gary Loveman wrote in a letter to employees that the Showboat has been in business in Atlantic City for 27 years and Caesars was proud to operate it for 16 years.

"I want to thank the Showboat Atlantic City team for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to our guests -- both throughout the years and especially over the past several weeks," he wrote.

Ruth Ann Joyce, who worked at Showboat as a bartender since the day it opened on March 30, 1987, was bitter on its last day.

"For 36 years (Atlantic City's casinos) were the cash cow," she said. "Now you're just going to kick us to the curb?"

She urged potential buyers to take a chance on the Showboat -- as long as Caesars doesn't put the same kind of deed restriction prohibiting a new owner from running it as a casino as it has with two recent sales of former casino properties.

Outside the Showboat, a security guard who had been preventing would-be customers from entering was greeted by a longtime customer who came to say goodbye and ask how the guard was doing.

"I got a job at ShopRite," the guard replied.

More than 470 of the Showboat's 2,000-plus workers are transferring to other casinos the company owns in New Jersey or in other states.

The Showboat was designed as a New Orleans-style riverboat casino with a Mardi Gras theme. It even had a bowling alley for folks who needed a break from the slot machines and table games.

Kurt Williams, of Seaville, was a young boy when his family took him to the Showboat soon after it opened.

"There was a fun vibe to the Showboat, especially for a wide-eyed young kid like me at the time, and it was the only resort in town that had a bowling alley," he said. "It's really a shame all these resorts are going belly up, and I feel awful for the surrounding communities and the families it will affect."

Elizabeth Scarnati, of Cortland Manor, New York, is still excited about a $12,000 jackpot she won last year playing slots at the Showboat.

"I always loved this little casino, especially those suites in the Bourbon Tower," she said. "I was lucky enough to stay in the one on the top floor, oceanfront, with the wraparound balcony. I will miss the Mardi Gras casino a lot."

Atlantic City began the year with 12 casinos, but before summer is over it will be down to eight. Nearly 8,000 casino workers will have lost their jobs.

Murder charges have been filed against a 24-year-old New Jersey man accused of stabbing and beating his mother to death.

Bail for Nicholas Piotti was set at $2 million. Prosecutors say he allegedly beat and stabbed his 63-year-old mother, Karen Piotti, killing her inside the home they shared in Ho-Ho-Kus. Her body was found early Monday.

Piotti was taken into police custody and was being evaluated at Bergen County Medical Center. Authorities say he had no "physical issues."

Neighbors said the news has devastated those who knew the family.

"I only heard nice things about Nicholas," said Donna Cioffi. "I used to see him skateboarding up and down Powderhorn Road, like any other teenager would do. I never had any issues with him."

"It's just devastating to a hear a 24-year-old can take his mother's life," she said. "No matter what the situation or circumstance is, you have to believe there's something very wrong behind that. It's very, very unnerving."

Gerry Pearce said the death of Karen Piotti was incomprehensible.

"This neighborhood is unbelievably nice, quiet," he said. "You never hear anything like this happen here."

Son of Police Chief Accused of Pointing Gun at Officers

The son of a local police chief was arrested after he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at two undercover police officers, according to the Morning Call.

Christopher Fitzgerald, 22, of Allentown, is charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and careless driving. Fitzgerald is the son of Allentown Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald, according to the Morning Call.

Investigators told the Morning Call that two Whitehall Police detectives were undercover while dressed in plain clothes and driving an unmarked vehicle in Allentown Friday. As they drove onto North Seventh Street they spotted a driver inside a white Nissan who they claimed was repeatedly stepping on the brakes.

The driver finally completely stopped in the middle of MacArthur Road, causing the officers’ car to nearly strike it, according to officials. The Morning Call reports the vehicle then pulled over into the right lane. As the detectives approached the vehicle, they claim they spotted the driver, identified as Christopher Fitzgerald, pointing a loaded Glock handgun at them. The detectives say they then placed their vehicle in reverse and drove backwards, believing they were about to be shot.

The Morning Call reports the detectives then contacted police radio and responding officers placed Fitzgerald into custody. He was arraigned Friday night and released after posting 10% of $10,000 bail.

Chief Fitzgerald told the Morning Call his son is a Lehigh County corrections officer who was driving his girlfriend to work and had his 1-year-old son inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. The Chief also claimed it was “very difficult” for him to believe his son would do anything to harm a police officer and said he would withhold judgment until more details emerge.
