2 Teens Arrested in LOVE Park Attack

Two teenagers are charged in a brutal attack at an iconic Philadelphia park that was caught on camera.

Two of the three skateboarders police say were involved in the beating of a 35-year-old ranger at LOVE Park, captured on cell phone video, have been arrested, police officials announced Monday.

Curtis Tanner, 19, of Pottstown, was arrested at his mother's home. He's charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and making terroristic threats.

Police say Tanner was the one who attacked the park ranger. According to court records, Tanner is currently on probation for a 2013 robbery conviction. He also pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after a fight a few months ago.

A Pottstown 17-year-old boy and junior at Pottstown High School is also charged as a juvenile with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. Police say the teen and his mother arrived at Central Detectives Monday afternoon.

Police are still searching for a third teen shown in the video.

Video of Friday's attack shows a teen kicking the ranger in the head repeatedly and spitting on him after he asked that they stop skateboarding in the park on 15th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

"Basically, he was just doing his job," witness Mariano Verrico of Essex Fells, New Jersey, who recorded the violent beating, said of the ranger.

The video shows the teens finally walk away when a man who appears to be dressed as Jesus walks towards them.

Verrico tells NBC10 he was too scared to try and stop the attack because he was outnumbered. He did escort the victim to a nearby police station and turned over his video.

The ranger suffered head injuries but is expected to make a full recovery, according to investigators. A skateboarding ban has been enforced at the iconic park since 2002.

Harsh Winter Turns Into Lovely Summer

Mother Nature has been good to the Philadelphia region this summer after a harsh, record-breaking winter.

There were numerous snow days that kept children home from school, shortened Spring Break or extended the school year in some area school districts. The School District of Philadelphia had six snow days for the 2013-2014 winter, three more than the previous winter.

This past winter was third snowiest on record in Philadelphia with 59.5 inches of snow. PennDOT went over budget and spent $200 million on snow removal.

All that winter nuisance has turned into a mild summer season, highlighted by numerous great shore weekends.

"We have yet to hit 100 degrees this summer. It doesn't get any better than this," said NBC10 First Alert chief  meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz.

The highest temperature this year was 96 degrees logged on July 2, during the first heatwave of the year. And we've only experienced two heat waves all year, according to "Hurricane."

The same jet stream pattern that let to record heat, went up and came down, said "Hurricane."

A reality check for this week -- there are showers and widespread thunderstorms expected Thursday, the temperature will cool down and humidity will stay low.

Yet, the sunshine will remain.

With just two short weeks before Labor Day, we're in the home stretch of the lovely summer season.

Caught on Cam: Driver Beaten After Striking, Killing Woman

Video has surfaced of the brutal attack of a driver who struck and killed a woman in Lakewood, New Jersey.

On August 9, Juan Gregoria-Chacon, 26, was driving his SUV when he struck 41-year-old Chandra Martin as she was crossing the street on Ocean Avenue. Martin suffered multiple injuries, including head trauma, and later died at the hospital.

Investigators say it appears Martin walked into the path of the SUV and don’t believe Chacon was speeding or driving under the influence.

After Chacon got out of his vehicle to check on Martin, angry friends and relatives of the woman began to attack him, according to investigators.

“It was such a commotion,” said Madis Tampuu. “Everybody just gathered.”

Cell phone video shows several people punching Chacon and throwing him to the ground before police arrived at the scene. The video also shows several bystanders trying to keep two men away from Chacon as the attack took place.

Chacon suffered facial injuries in the beating and was taken to the hospital. On Monday he underwent surgery.

“They punched him in the head,” said Chacon’s uncle, Jose Chacon. “For what? I know they were angry but that doesn’t fix the problem.”

Anthony Campbell, who residents say lived with Martin, was later arrested in connection to the attack and charged with aggravated assault.

According to investigators, Chacon didn’t have a license at the time of the accident and had previously been cited twice for driving without one. While he was eligible for reinstatement in December, officials say he failed to pay the $100 restoration fee.

Chacon was charged with causing a death while driving without a license.

“I know it’s not right,” Jose Chacon said. “I know my nephew makes mistakes.”

Man in 'Hoagiefest' Shirt Robs Wawa

A man tried to look the part of a Wawa worker during an alleged heist.

A thief wearing a tie-dyed “Hoagiefest” T-shirt pretended to be a Wawa employee as he swiped hundreds of dollars’ worth of cigarettes from a South Jersey convenience store, according to investigators.

Mount Laurel Police say surveillance video shows the man masquerading as an employee walking into the store along Route 73 on August 12 around 1:40 p.m.

A Wawa spokesperson said the company doesn't sell "Hoagiefest" shirts to the general public.

After going through the front door, the man played the part of an actual employee by heading behind the counter, according to police. He wound up swiping at least five cartons of cigarettes.

Police say a second suspect -- not dressed as an employee -- stood by the door as a lookout.

The pair fled the store with $380 worth of cigarettes in a gold, older model Nissan Maxima driven by a third suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mount Laurel Police at 856-234-1414 extension 1599, the Detective Bureau at 856-234-1414, extension 1526 or send an email to facebook@mountlaurelpd.org.

Driver Rescued From Creek After Fiery Truck Crash

A tractor-trailer careened off the side of Interstate 95 in New Jersey and smashed into a guardrail Tuesday morning, sending the 66-year-old driver into a creek below and igniting part of the cab.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the accident on the interstate’s northbound lanes in Ridgefield Park. Driver Lawrence Scherf, of Vails Gate, escaped the burning cab of the tractor trailer and wound up in the Overpeck Creek, which runs under that part of the highway.

Three state troopers waded through water up to their necks to pull Scherf out of the creek. Chopper 4 captured the daring rescue, following the troopers as they climbed up a ledge with Scherf on a stretcher and hoisted him back onto the highway.

"The whole time we just kept telling him, myself and the other two troopers, that he was going to be alright, we were going to make sure nothing happened to him, we were going to get him out of there OK, in one piece, and that's exactly what we did, " said Trooper Luis Cardenas, one of the three troopers who participated in the rescue.

Scherf was airlifted to the hospital with burns on 65 percent of his body and lacerations, authorities said. His rescuers were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Chopper 4 footage from the scene showed the charred front of the tractor-trailer dangling off the roadway, part of it partially submerged in the creek. Heavy smoke was wafting from the vehicle and the northbound inner roadway to Route 80 West was closed while crews worked.

Other lanes of traffic were open, but the accident caused heavy delays.

Corbett Signs Execution Warrant for Convicted Murderer

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett signed an execution warrant Monday for a 28-year-old man convicted of fatally shooting his 21-year-old girlfriend and their 19-month-old child.

Michael Parrish, 28, is set to die by lethal injection on Oct. 14, according to the Governor's Office.

The Monroe County man was found guilty in March 2012 of killing Victoria Adams and their son, Sidney Michael Parrish, on July 6, 2009.

On the day she died, Adams told family and friends that Parrish was controlling and abusive and she planned to end the relationship when she returned to the apartment they shared later that day, according to a news release.

Afraid of how her boyfriend might react, Adams had several relatives and a friend accompany her to the apartment, where Parrish was home with their son.

The woman went inside alone and, minutes later, Parrish exited the building and brandished a gun at the group, who were waiting outside for Adams to return.

He went back to the apartment and fired multiple shots, hitting Adams eight times and Sidney six times, according to the Governor's Office.

Hearing the gunfire, Adams' relatives began to rush inside, but Parrish began firing in their direction.

The group fled in their car and Parrish went on the run, the Governor's Office said.

A multi-state manhunt ensued and Parrish was taken into custody on July 8, 2009 in New Hampshire.

Parrish's execution warrant is the 36th signed by Corbett since taking office.

The last person to be executed in Pennsylvania was 56-year-old Gary Heidnik, who died July 6, 1999.

Officials are investigating a partial roof collapse at a building in South Philadelphia.

The roof of the three-story building collapsed on Front and Christian Streets around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The building contains the For Petes Sake Pub on the first floor and apartments on the second and third. Workers were on the roof when the collapse occurred. No one was injured however and all workers have been accounted for.

According to officials with Licenses and Inspections, construction work was occurring at the location at the time of the accident. The owners of the building had a zoning permit for interior renovations of the second and third floor as well as the expansion of the bar and kitchen on the first floor.

An inspection was completed at the building back on August 12 and a permit was posted. Peterbuilt Construction LLC is the listed contractor for the building.

Officials with PGW, PECO and L&I are investigating the accident, according to an L&I spokesperson.

"This is a permitted construction site," the spokesperson wrote. "The Department will investigate and take necessary action to ensure the site is made safe by the property owner/contractor."
