Aggressive Panhandler Spotted in Fairmount Area

Another woman has come forward claiming she was the target of an aggressive panhandler who has been spotted in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park area.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 the unidentified man approached her back on July 17 while she was stopped at a red light on Belmont and Parkside Avenues.

"He told me his wife was pregnant but maintained he was a professor from Temple," the woman said. "He said she had been in a car accident and he needed help to get to the hospital or have a locksmith open his car which is why he was asking for money. He was asking me for a ride but did not try to force his way into my car."

The woman says she drove off and called the Philadelphia Police 16th District. She was transferred to 911 and repored the incident.

The woman believes the man who approached her was the same person who approached a mom and her children outside Philadelphia's Please Touch Museum on Thursday.

The woman, who also asked not to be identified, said the man approached her and her two children outside the children’s museum located along the Avenue of the Republic in Fairmount Park.

She and her two children were about 10 feet from the museum’s front doors when the man came upon them.

“I was approached by a very irate man who was screaming and yelling that ‘My wife was in a car accident and I need $6 to get a ride to go be with her,’” she recalled.

"He was becoming increasingly loud," she said. "I was afraid, he was getting very close. And he was starting to wave his hands very close to me."

The mother asked the panhandler, who she described as 6-feet tall and fairly well dressed in a blue shirt, tan pants and jacket, to go away, but he continued to yell, she said.

Fearful, she sent her kids inside the museum as the man went on to claim he was a Temple University professor that owned a local bar, according to the woman. He then offered her $100 if she could help him, she said.

"He was specifically targeting young women with young children at a place where women take their children daily," she said.

The man eventually left as a museum staffer came out to chase after him. Back inside, security called 911.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Pasquale Agozzino, head of the 16th District, tells NBC10.com that a sergeant happened to be on patrol nearby and was at the museum within moments.

After getting a description of the man, the sergeant searched for him along nearby Parkside Avenue, but the officer was unable to locate him.

Please Touch Museum spokesperson Tory Harris said the museum always has security posted inside and outside and that they’ve contacted police about the issue.

The mother, however, said security was never outside.

The museum received reports that the man was causing trouble in the surrounding neighborhood and Fairmount Park over the past few weeks, Harris said.

But police said Thursday’s incident was the first time they learned of the panhandler.

The panhandler later approached NBC10's George Spencer during his report Friday night.

"I need help. My wife was just in an accident," the suspect told Spencer.

Police were informed immediately that the panhandler had returned to the same area but were unable to locate the suspect Friday night.

The mother, who posted about her experience in a Facebook parenting group, said the whole experience was scary for her and the kids. She also said she’s frustrated that the museum did not warn members about the man.

“People are grabbing kids out of car seats, getting bags out of the car and this guy could be coming up,” she said. “I want other women to know and to be cautious.”

The woman who claimed she was approached by the panhandler last month told NBC10 she once again contacted the 16th District after reading about him approaching the mother and her children.

"The woman who answered the phone did not forward me to an officer or take my information," the woman said. "I'm concerned that this man is dangerous and the complaints are not being taken seriously."

Several NBC10 viewers also claimed they did not see any police officers patrol the area where the panhandler was spotted. A spokesperson for the 16th District told NBC10 on Sunday that officers were increasing their presence outside the museum however.

Philadelphia's Taney Dragons baseball team has given Philly sports fans something to cheer about after winning their second game at the Little League World Series in Williamsport Sunday night 7-6.

The team pulled off a dramatic comeback win in the 6th inning and sits just two wins away from the championship game.

It was clutch time when the team started the bottom of the 6th inning and were down 6-5. They went on to score two runs to take the lead and beat Pearland East of Pearland, Texas, the Southwest champion.

They advance to play a team from Las Vegas Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Mayor Michael Nutter hosted a large viewing party at City Hall. Hundreds turned out.

Ace pitcher Mo'ne Davis, who's emerged as the team's star player, played third base and shortstop Sunday due to pitching rest rules.

Davis struck out eight batters in her complete-game effort against South Nashville on Friday. She's the first girl to throw a complete-game at the LLWS.

The Dragons are the first team from Philadelphia to make it to the LLWS.

Tina Fey Returns Home, Talks Pizza & Mean Girls

“She doesn’t even go here.”

Not anymore at least.

Once upon a time though Tina Fey, of Mean Girls and 30 Rock fame, called Upper Darby High School and Summer Stage home.

Saturday night she returned to the stage for a screening of "Mean Girls" and a Q and A session moderated by fellow Summer Stage alum and TV Guide writer Damien Holbrook.

“I was the only kid who would return to school paler than when I left,” Fey said of spending her summers working on shows, sewing costumes and singing in the chorus.

She wouldn’t have had it any other way.

It was a packed house for the event with many Summer Stage alumni in the audience who were invited onstage to sing a Summer Stage classic “To Fill the World With Love” with Fey before the start of the film.

After the movie, Fey came out and answered questions from the audience and reminisced with Holbrook about their Summer Stage days.

“No matter how hard it was at school it was over when you got home,” the Twitterless Fey said.

“Today there’s so many devices for boys to not call you on.”

She enjoyed her days spent in the chorus, but 'Miss SNL' never had a leading role during her time there.

She talked about the importance of trying out all the jobs whether it be lighting, sound, acting or costumes which she helped make with Holbrook’s brother at Summer Stage.

The "Bossypants" author gave advice to women living in a male-powered business world.

“Don’t eat diet food in meetings. Eat a steak,” she said.

Meanwhile pizza, specifically nearby Pica’s, is Fey’s food of choice.

A member of the audience asked if she were planning on going to Pica’s after the show.

“Actually I filled up on a ton of Pica’s before this so…yes.”

Tina Fey answered rumors about a "Mean Girls" musical saying that it was in the works but still a few years out.

Fey both starred in and wrote the screenplay for the film. The movie celebrated its 10 year anniversary this year.

Fey said some inspiration came from her experiences at Upper Darby High School.

Holbrook wrapped up the Q and A after looking at his watch and announcing it was nearly 10 p.m.

A very concerned Fey said, "We gotta get out of here before Dairy Queen closes."

Clearly Fey is still "deep Delco," as Holbrook put it.

Proceeds from Saturday's event went towards a new sound system for Summer Stage, replacing the 25-year-old system.

"Mom From Hell" is Sentenced for Beating Son

An Upper Darby "mom from hell" learned her fate after she plead guilty to simple assault in the beating of her 11-year-old son.

Samantha Starnes acquired the moniker from Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood who said that was the only way to describe a mother who beat her son.

Starnes' 11-year-old son walked into the Upper Darby Community Policing Center last month with 27 bruises and welts on his body. A social worker took the child in. The boy alleged his mother beat him with a belt and her fist for not doing chores.

The mother pleaded guilty to simple assault and received probation. She must undergo anger management classes and drug and alcohol evaluation. Contact with the victim is to be determined by Children and Youth Services.

She allegedly beat the child for not folding his clothes properly and for not washing the dishes.

“She really needs some help,” said a neighbor. “They shouldn’t let her a** out of jail, no offense. Keep her in jail.”

Trial Begins for Accused Teen Rapist

The trial is set to begin Monday for a teenager accused in a series of sexual assaults of teenage girls in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Joshua Benson, 19, is accused of raping several teen girls in Bucks County.

Benson remains held on $5 million bail after being charged with raping and sexually assaulting multiple underage girls -- some who he met online.

After a series of hearings over the past few months including some charges being upgraded from juvenile court, the trial is set to begin Monday morning.

Benson was arraigned last November on charges that he raped two young girls.

Originally, authorities said the Bensalem, Pa., native also violently sexually assaulted five other girls over a five-month time period when he was under the age of 18. All of the victims were between the ages of 14 and 16, officials said.

After media coverage of Benson's arrest, another woman came forward and said he assaulted her in 2011 when she was just 17. Since the alleged assault occurred when Benson was also underage additional charges were filed in juvenile court, according to police.

Benson moved to the area from Utah more than three years ago, shortly before the alleged assaults began, officials said.

Benson, who cursed at reporters on his way into court following his arrest, met some of his victims on a dating website and others through friends, authorities said. They say the teen would be friendly to the girls and make them trust him before violently forcing himself on them.

"Once he befriended them and gained trust in them where they agreed to have a very short-term relationship with him. Once he began engaging in sexual contact it immediately turned violent," Bensalem Police Sgt. Andrew Aninsman said.

The most recent victims say they were forced to perform sex acts in the basement of a townhome along Arrowood Drive in Bensalem, officials said.

Benson was locked up in a juvenile detention center on charges he assaulted the five girls while he was underage. He was then transferred to the Bucks County Prison after he turned 18. He has remained behind bars since.

Arrest in Aggressive Please Touch Museum Panhandling Incidents

After various complaints about an aggressive panhandler outside of one of Philadelphia's favorite family attractions, police have a suspect in custody.

Police officers arrested the unidentified man near the Philadelphia Zoo Sunday, according to the Please Touch Museum.

On Monday, police didn't confirm the arrest and didn't release the suspect's name.

The alleged aggressive panhandler recently targeted women especially in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park area.

One woman, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 the unidentified man approached her back on July 17 while she was stopped at a red light on Belmont and Parkside Avenues -- that's not far the Please Touch Museum.

"He told me his wife was pregnant but maintained he was a professor from Temple," the woman said. "He said she had been in a car accident and he needed help to get to the hospital or have a locksmith open his car which is why he was asking for money. He was asking me for a ride but did not try to force his way into my car."

The woman says she drove off and called the Philadelphia Police Department's 16th District. She was transferred to 911 and reported the incident.

Mutilated Bodies of Cats Found in Philly Neighborhood

Gruesome discoveries in the city’s Mayfair section have led to concerns for the safety of stray kittens in the neighborhood.

“It’s gruesome,” said Raymond Boyce. “It’s sick.”

Boyce says he was at home with his fiancée last week when he heard a knock at his door.

“Some little girl knocked on the door and said there were kids trying to hurt the cats,” Boyce said.

The girl directed Boyce to a shed on Lardner Street.

“I walked in and I thought I was going to throw up,” Boyce said. “I went in and saw four dead cats. The only things left were skulls, fur and little bones here and there.”

Gina Albater, also of Mayfair, told NBC10 her neighbor made a similar discovery last week as well. According to Albater, two dead cats were found on her neighbor’s front lawn and across from her home on Harbison Avenue.

Boyce and Albater filed police reports and also contacted officials with animal welfare, who are now investigating. No arrests have been made and investigators have not released a description of any suspects.

“These are innocent little creatures,” Albater said. “They don’t know how to hate. They don’t know what hate is. All they know how to do is love, eat and purr. There’s no reason to hurt them.”

Philadelphia Police have released the photo of a man who may have been involved in a deadly shooting outside a Philadelphia anti-violence concert.

Alexis Guevara, 20, was outside the Dell Music Center in the city's Fairmount Park when he was shot shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses told police Guevara got into an argument with an unidentified man. Investigators say the two men may have been fighting over a woman.

The suspect then pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking Guevara in the stomach and right thigh. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

Guevara was attending the "Philly Support Philly: Peace on the Streets'' concert with a friend, according to family members who created a web page to raise funds for the victim's funeral.

A young boy is in the hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in the Kensington section of the city.

The 9-year-old boy was riding his bike on Frankford Avenue and Elkhart Street around 5:40 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a gold-colored Chevy Silverado that was passing by. Michele Krause, who witnessed the accident, claimed the driver was talking on his phone moments before the crash.

"The dude was on the phone talking, yacking away," Krause said. "He hit the boy, then the metal bar of the truck hit the boy, smacked him in the face and ripped his whole head open."

Investigators say the driver of the truck picked the motionless boy up, placed him in his vehicle and tried to take him to the hospital. He then flagged down a police cruiser that was driving by.

The officers took the boy to St. Christopher’s Hospital where he is being treated for head trauma.

"They just told me that he's stable," said Sue Easdlack, a friend of the boy's family. "They're stitching up the lacerations in his head."

Police continue to investigate the crash.
