Caught on Cam: Burglar Jumps Out of Window

Police are on the hunt for a burglar who was caught on camera jumping out of an Upper Darby home.

“This video is a homerun,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “We caught him right in the act, coming out of the window and almost jumping in midair.”

Police say the unidentified man climbed into the open window of a home on Copley Road on Monday. Once inside, he stole a laptop and checkbooks before jumping out of the window.

Surveillance video shows the burglar landing in an alley outside the home and gathering himself before fleeing the scene.

Kook Bang, the homeowner and leader of a local Korean church, believes the burglar heard him walk into the house right before he jumped out.

“I called 911,” Bang said.

Investigators believe the suspect was responsible for four other break-ins in the area. Now that his face is on camera, Chitwood believes it’s only a matter of time before he’s caught.

“The world of technology has really, really enhanced the police department’s ability to investigate crime,” Chitwood said. “This is the perfect example.”

Chitwood urges all Upper Darby residents to lock up and keep their possessions safe.

“Whether it’s your car or your home, you have to make sure that you’re secure,” he said. “These bums are gonna steal, rob and pillage, period.”

If you have any information on the suspect’s identity, please call Upper Darby Police at (610) 352-7050.

New Video Game From Philly Startup Goes International

$

A feisty, daring version of Little Red Riding Hood is giving the international gaming world a taste of Philly and putting the spotlight on the city's tech industry as a local video game development firm debuts its first product in Germany this week.

“Our main heroine doesn’t need saving,” said Ash Monif, the CEO of Philadelphia-based Grimm Bros. “She can save herself.”

The startup company put a dark twist on the classic fairy tale with its premiere title, Dragon Fin Soup. The game features protagonist Red Robin – a caped, blonde-haired alcoholic who can’t remember her demon-filled past.

“We wanted what could be an interesting fault that people could relate to, but could also be overcome,” he explained.

Monif and his four-person team spent the past two years developing the role playing game, which is one of 36 independently created games showcased from Aug. 13-17 at Indie MEGABOOTH as part of Gamescom 2014.

The 5-day convention will draw about 400,000 people – nearly double the attendance at Comic-Con International in San Diego – putting Grimm Bros and Philly’s mushrooming gaming industry on the map.

And shining a light on the burgeoning local technology industry is a win for the entire city, according to Frank Lee, a Drexel University professor who founded the school’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio.

“We have little to no presence in the gaming industry,” Lee said.

Despite top-rated game design programs at Drexel, University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, most companies are based on the West Coast with a few in New York and Boston.

"Any game company able to go beyond the border to represent Philadelphia," he continued, "is helping to raise the profile and gather more interest in the growing independent game industry [here.]"

Lee adds that having Red Robin – a female as Dragon Fin Soup’s lead character – could get even more eyeballs on the screen and, in turn, on Philly.

"The game has potential to appeal to a much broader audience beyond the stereotypical male, aged 16- to 25-years-old,” said Lee, who added Red Robin, unlike many female characters in video games, is not overtly sexualized.

“Hopefully this is a positive message that resonates with young woman and young game players,” he said.

Players can take the “charming and scrappy” character through several different modes: Story, Survival or Labyrinth, Monif said.

Users can spend hours in story mode, unraveling Red Robin’s past.

"She lost her memory," Monif explains. "You get to discover what happens to her and it unfolds into a plot full of murder, mystery and madness."

Survival mode offers skilled players one chance to battle monsters and other terrors Red Robin encounters, while Labyrinth mode lets gamers compete against their friends in an endless maze packed with traps.

Dragon Fin Soup will have a staggered release over the next few months, becoming available on Sony platforms followed by Linux, Mac, iOS and Android devices.

Fans of Grimm Bros’ first release can expect the firm to develop a second game, but the more ambitious project will require even more local talent to join the team by early 2015, Monif said.

“We will be looking to hire more artists and engineers, at least two more developers if not three,” he said. "We are still the underdog in the game industry, but we're moving as quickly as we can."

Firefighter, Teen Accused of Setting Fire to 3 Homes

A 19-year-old volunteer firefighter and a teenage boy are both accused of setting fire to three homes in Delaware County.

On July 20, around 11 p.m. police and firefighters were called to a house fire on Delmar Drive in Folcroft, Pa, right across the street from the firehouse. When they arrived they found a vacant home in the woods with flames coming through the roof.

Investigators deemed the fire suspicious since the home had been vacant for several years and didn’t have any utilities inside. The fire was later ruled arson.

On August 2, investigators interviewed 19-year-old John Corcoran IV, a volunteer firefighter from Glenolden. During the interview, Corcoran allegedly admitted to helping a 17-year-old Tinicum Township boy set fire to the home. Police say Corcoran was driving the teen around the night of July 20 when they decided to light the Delmar Drive home on fire.

“I won’t get caught, I’m a ninja,” the teen allegedly told Corcoran.

Investigators say Corcoran dropped the teen off at the home and the boy used a lighter to light paper on fire in the bathroom. Corcoran later picked the teen up and the two fled the scene, according to investigators.

Corcoran also allegedly admitted to helping the teen light two other homes on fire back on May 31 and June 5 on Garfield Avenue in the Briarcliff section of Darby Township. Corcoran also later responded to both of those fires and helped put them out, according to investigators.

Both Corcoran and the teen were arrested and charged with arson.

Corcoran’s bail was set at $250,000 cash. He’s scheduled for a preliminary hearing on August 20.

The man accused of fatally shooting his caseworker and wounding a doctor at a Delaware County wellness center was arragined Tuesday on murder charges and other related offenses.

Five days after he was discharged from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, 49-year-old Richard Plotts was arragined by video Tuesday on charges of first-degree and third-degree murder, criminal homicide, aggravated assault and weapons offenses for his alleged role in the July 24 shooting death of 53-year-old Theresa Hunt.

Authorities said Plotts pulled out a gun and began firing at Hunt and his psychiatrist, Dr. Lee Silverman, in an office in a wellness center on the grounds of Mercy-Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa.

A bullet grazed the head of Silverman, who pulled out his own weapon and fired at the suspect -- hiiting Plotts three times in the torso, according to police.

Both Plotts and Silverman were rushed to HUP following the shootout. Silverman was released hours after the incident occurred, while Plotts remained hospitalized for two weeks.

The suspect was previously arragined at HUP, but his return to Delaware County required another arraignment proceeding. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug.26.

Construction is set to begin between late September and early October on the highly anticipated project connecting I-95 to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Inquirer reports that PKF-Mark III Inc. of Newtown, Pa. won a $142.9 million contract to widen and rebuild several miles of the Turnpike in the area where the I-95 connection will be built in Bristol Township.

The new interchange will directly connect the Pa. Turnpike to Interstate 95, making I-95 continuous through the Mid-Atlantic region. Officials say the project will reduce congestion on local Bucks County roadways and improve the flow of traffic in the Philadelphia area and along the entire east coast.

Stage 1 of the project includes high speed connections to the Pa. Turnpike and I-95 in Bucks County, a new mainline toll plaza and mainline widening. The project will make I-95 continuous through the east coast from Florida to Maine. Construction is set to be complete between 2017 and 2018.

Stage 2 of the project involves the completion of the mainline widening, while Stage 3 involves the creation of an additional bridge over the Delaware River.

Twenty-four-year-old Jasper Gregory Moy faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery of a motor vehicle, carrying firearms without a license and other related offenses for allegedly demanding Deena Linder, wife of Chester's mayor, get out of her Ford Taurus while pointing a gun at her head May 14.

Man Charged in Deadly Carjacking Apologizes in Court

A man involved in a deadly carjacking that ended with a mother and her three children being run down along a Philadelphia street apologized in court to the victim's family.

At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Jonathan Rosa told the family of Keisha Williams that he was remorseful and asking for forgiveness for the crash that killed the 34-year-old Tioga woman, her two sons and teenage daughter, according to courtroom witnesses.

Rosa made the comments after he waived any objection to the court proceeding -- setting the stage for the murder case to move forward.

The 19-year-old told police he and an acquaintance, 23-year-old Cornelius Crawford, carjacked a realtor near 6th and Cumberland Streets on July 25. Police said they then sped through the neighborhood, in the woman's Toyota SUV, before losing control of the truck at Germantown and Allegheny Avenues.

The SUV ran down Williams and her children -- 15-year-old Keiearra Williams, 10-year-old Joseph Thomas Reed and 7-year-old Terrence Moore -- as they sold fruit to raise money for the construction of a playground. The children died within minutes. The mother remained in a coma for two weeks until passing away last Thursday.

A family friend was also hit by the car and suffered a broken ankle. The realtor, who was trapped in the truck, was also hurt when the SUV slammed into a tree. Investigators say the woman was also sexually assaulted by the men before the crash.

Prosecutors charged both Rosa and Crawford with 2nd Degree Murder, Conspiracy and other crimes.

Rosa's attorney, Chris Warren, said the man had just learned about Keisha Williams' death minutes before the court proceedings.

The conspiracy charges against Rosa were withdrawn during Wednesday's court proceedings, according to court records. The murder charges remain.

The preliminary hearing for Crawford was continued until October 21.

Rosa is next due in court for a formal arraignment on September 3.

Philadelphia Police have charged two men for allegedly trying to burglarize the home of a woman murdered in Pennypack Park.

The attempted burglary took place at the home of Connie and Christopher Murray along the 2800 block of Tolbut Street around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Connie Murray was strangled to death, allegedly at the hands of her husband Christopher Murray, last week.

Authorities say neighbors saw the alleged burglars, identified as 32-year-old Steven Anderson and 27-year-old Brandon Howard, trying to enter the home and called police.

When officers arrived and started questioning them, police say Anderson claimed to be the nephew of Connie Murray. Officials say they've yet to find out whether that's true.

Both men were then arrested and charged with attempted burglary and related offenses.

Connie Murrary's body was found last Monday in the Pennypack Park by a person walking their dog. Detectives say the husband later confessed to the crime after failing a lie detector test. He allegedly told detectives the couple was arguing over suspected infidelity on his part and that he snapped when his wife started slapping him.

Christopher Murray then left his wife's body in the park, near a bench, police say. He also allegedly tossed her cell phone into a storm drain before going home. He stands charged with her death. The couple have two children together.

Vehicle Crashes into Supermarket, Kills Twp. Supervisor

Members of a Chester County community are mourning the death of a town leader who died after he was struck by a pickup truck that crashed into the front of a ShopRite supermarket.

Witnesses say a woman in her 20's reversed her truck and slammed into the entrance of the ShopRite store along the 1100 block of West Chester Pike in West Chester, Pa. around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The impact of the crash brought down part of a stone wall to the left of the entrance doors.

Dr. Robert White, a West Goshen Township Supervisor and Navy veteran, was struck by the truck as he was standing on the sidewalk. The impact pushed him into the ShopRite.

"We saw that he was bleeding out of the back of his head and they were giving him CPR," said Allison Liesch, a witness.

White, 77, was rushed to Chester County Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, said officials.

"When we saw that it was him our heart sunk a little," said Josh Jacquette, White's neighbor. "He was very friendly. He always would do anything to help you out."

White served as the township supervisor for 22 years. For 12 years before that, he was a member of the West Goshen planning commission. He was also a dentist who ran a practice with his son.

"He cared about the community," Jacquette said. "He cared about his neighbors. He cared about the township and trying to do right by them."

Township officials canceled their monthly meeting in order to grieve. White leaves behind a wife and two adult sons.

While the woman behind the wheel was questioned by police, investigators believe the entire ordeal was just a tragic accident. No charges have been filed.

Police Avert Dad's Suicide, Save Toddler

Police rescued a father who was holding his 3-year-old son and threatening suicide as he stood on the railing of a 7-story parking garage in Bethlehem Tuesday.

The man called 911 around 6:45 p.m. and told operators he was standing on the 7th level of the Sands Casino Parking Garage located near Daly Ave and Stefko Boulevard, according to reports.

His call came shortly after the man's wife contacted police to say her husband assaulted her, threw her out of a car and threatened her before taking off with their child, according to officials.

She also told authorities that her husband had threatened suicide before fleeing the scene of the domestic dispute, which took place on the 900 block of Hellertown Road, police said.

When responding officers arrived at Sands' garage, they found the man -- who was visibly upset -- holding the young boy as he stood on the railing, according to authorities.

The officers convinced the man to place his son on the parking deck floor. As he stood back up and began to move forward to jump, the officers sprinted to the man and tackled him to the floor, according to officials.

The child, who was not injured in the incident, was reunited with his mother.

The boy's father was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem for a mental health evaluation, police said.

Authorities said they did not release the names of those involved as the man has not been charged.

The incident remains under investigation.
