Road Rage Leads to Stabbing at Gas Station

A man is in the hospital while another is in custody after a road rage incident led to a stabbing outside a gas station in Collingdale Tuesday afternoon.

Police tell NBC10 that 34-year-old Stanley Williams of Philadelphia was driving along the 300 block of MacDade Boulevard when another driver cut him off. Williams and the man then began to argue at a nearby Sunoco Gas Station, according to investigators.

Williams left the gas station and then returned in his wife's silver Lexus while she sat on the passenger side, according to officials. He then allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the arm.

"He decided to come back which now makes him the aggressor," said Collingdale Police Chief Robert Adams.

Responding officers said they spotted Williams driving the Lexus away from the scene and turning left onto Staley Avenue, which is a dead end.

A Darby Police Officer then found the Lexus parked on Staley Avenue while it was still running, according to investigators. The officer said he then spotted Williams and his wife walking away from the car. They were both detained by responding police officers.

Investigators said they found blood on the side rear door of Williams’ car and front right tire. They also said the windshield was smashed.

Williams was taken into custody after a witness identified him as the man who stabbed the victim, according to police. The suspect was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held on $200,000 bail. If bail is posted and Williams is release, he will be required to wear a home monitor, authorities said.

Williams' wife was not charged.

The victim, a Darby resident, was taken to the Delaware County Hospital and treated for a stab wound to the left arm. He is currently in stable condition.

Mayor Asks Borough to Cover Legal Fees

Council members in Penns Grove, New Jersey denied a request from the Mayor to have the borough cover the cost of his legal fees in connection to a recent incident that was captured on video.

Penns Grove Mayor John Washington was charged earlier this month with aggravated assault for his alleged role in an attack on a police officer at Penns Grove Middle School.

Witnesses say Penns Grove School Board member Walter Hudson, 33, assaulted a police officer during a youth basketball game at the school back on July 10. NBC10 obtained surveillance video showing a man, who police identified as Hudson, tossing the officer to the ground as children ran to the opposite end of the school gym.

Witnesses told NBC10 that the ordeal began as several youth basketball teams were being dismissed. A large group of teens had gathered on school grounds, prompting officials to call police to break up the crowd. As officers tried to manage the crowd, Hudson allegedly interfered. When police warned Hudson to back off, he allegedly shoved an officer to the ground and punched him.

"The officer advised him he was going to be arrested and that's when the altercation happened," said Penns Grove Police Chief Gary Doubledee, who added the assault victim was hospitalized with a torn labrum and had to be sedated.

During the incident, Mayor Washington allegedly grabbed the officer’s left arm while he was trying to arrest Hudson. Washington was accused of obstructing the administration of law and was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. Penns Grove councilwoman Jeanette Jackson was also charged for allegedly interfering in Hudson’s arrest.

Both Washington and Jackson held a meeting on Tuesday around 5 p.m. at the Penns Grove Borough Hall in which they tried to convince the Penns Grove Council to make the Borough cover their legal fees in connection to the incident. The council voted to deny the request however. Both Mayor Washington and Councilwoman Jackson were recused and did not vote.

Many residents who attended the meeting were glad the request was not approved. Angry residents also pushed for Hudson to be removed from the school board during a meeting earlier this month. School board members claimed their hands were tied however.

"File a complaint,' said Solicitor Mark Toscano of the Penns Grove Board of Education. "Press charges if you feel that way because this board doesn't have the legal ability to give you the redress that you seek."

According to Toscano, under the law the board can't discipline one of its members. Instead it's up to the school ethics commission. Parents say they filed complaints but were told that officials were investigating.

"I'm very disappointed in the whole thing," said Penns Grove Borough Councilman Carl Washington. "But again, my main concern is the youth."

Co. That Sold Gate That Killed Girl Under Scrutiny

$

New details continue to emerge on the company that sold the security gate that crushed a young girl to death at a Rita’s Water Ice last month.

On June 28 a one-ton security gate at the Rita’s Water Ice in Brewerytown suddenly gave way and fell on top of 3-year-old Wynter Larkin, crushing her to death.

Three weeks after the tragedy, NBC10 has learned that city inspectors found problems with another security gate in the same neighborhood sold by the same company, Day or Night Door Service in Gloucester City, New Jersey.

David Woods, the owner of Day or Night, sold the security gate to Rita’s Water Ice six years ago, according to his wife. Woods however, is unable to speak due to a violent incident earlier this year. Last February a man beat woods with a hammer while robbing him in West Philadelphia. Police say he was hit so hard he lost his speech.

While L&I isn’t responsible for inspecting the gates, officials told NBC10 they checked more than half a dozen security gates Woods sold to businesses on West Girard Avenue. L&I Commissioner Carlton Williams says they found a loose bolt on one of those gates and issued the business owner a violation. Officials have not yet confirmed however whether or not Woods’ company installed that gate.

Some Brewerytown officials believe L&I should check more than just the gates sold by Woods.

“All of these buildings around here are old,” said Valerie Graham. “They need to come and check every one of them.”

The owner of Fast Door, a company that installs security doors, told NBC10 that building owners should get their doors inspected at least once a year by the installer. He also says the fact that the Rita's Water Ice had bolts in its door was risky, given that trolley cars can run up and down the street.

Maintenance, care and inspections of roll down security gates are the responsibility of the property owner, according to City of Philadelphia property codes.

Property records list P&G Development as the owner. Attempts to reach P&G were unsuccessful.
L&I officials say they inspect these gates if they receive complaints of apparent defects. There are no open violations, and there is no violation history related to the gate, according to L&I.

Philadelphia Police continue to investigate the Rita’s Water Ice accident. No charges have been filed at this time.

"Whatever we come across in terms of the investigative piece of it we will turn that over to the District Attorney's Office," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant John Stanford.

Former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham told NBC10 that in order for any charges to be filed, investigators would have to determine that whoever placed the door outside the building had some awareness that it could fall.

A former baggage handler at the Philadelphia International Airport was sentenced to 11 years in prison for his involvement in a large-scale drug organization.

From February 2010 to July 2011, James Mickens, 30, of Philadelphia used his Airport access card to smuggle hundreds of thousands of dollars in drug money through Philly International, in order to avoid detection by law enforcement. Mickens was working as a baggage claim handler for US Airways while smuggling the money.

Mickens made several trips to Los Angeles for the drug organization, which purchased and transported several kilograms of cocaine and hundreds of pounds of marijuana back to Philadelphia as checked luggage.

In addition to the 11-year prison term, a judge also ordered five years of supervised release and a $200 special assessment for Mickens.

The FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations and the Philadelphia Police Department were all involved in the investigation leading to Mickens’ arrest.

Man Accused of Paying Underage Girls for Sex

More allegations have surfaced against a Mercer County man who was arrested last May for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl. Adam Carnevale, 27, of Lawrence Township, is now accused of paying money to at least six underage girls in exchange for sex.

“Shocking,” said Carnevale’s neighbor, Shalom Levin. “That’s the only thing to say. Shocking.”

According to police, Carnevale repeatedly paid the girls money, clothes, alcohol and cigarettes for sex. Investigators say the six victims ranged in age from 12 to 17.

Carnevale allegedly found his victims through social media sites such as Facebook. After Carnevale found the 12-year-old victim he immediately asked her if she wanted to perform oral sex on him for cash, according to police.

Police also say he threatened to put a 15-year-old girl’s nude photographs on the Internet if she didn’t perform oral sex on him.

Carnevale allegedly gave the girls $40 to $60 per encounter and would often have sex with the girls in parking lots and even inside his parent's home.

Carnevale was arrested last May by Falls Township Police after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl. The new allegations against him surfaced while he was in prison.

Carnevale remains in jail on a $1 million bond. Police continue to investigate whether more victims are out there.

If you have any information on Carnevale or any other victims, please call Falls Township Police at 215-949-9100.
