School Meeting Turns Violent

A school meeting escalated to violence Thursday when a member of the board of education was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Board Member Walter Hudson, 33, was at Penns Grove Middle School as several youth basketball teams were being dismissed.

A large group of teens had gathered on school grounds, prompting officials to call police to break up the crowd.

But Penns Grove Borough Councilman Carl Washington said Hudson interfered with the officers as they tried to manage the throng of people.

Police say they warned Hudson to back off, but he didn't listen. Instead he shoved the cop to the ground and punched him, according to witnesses at the scene.

"The officer advised him he was going to be arrested and that's when the altercation happened," said Penns Grove Police Chief Gary Doubledee, who added the assault victim was hospitalized with a bruised shoulder and had to be sedated.

Parents say Hudson had been an outspoken board member in the past, but that Thursday’s event is one that deeply concerns them.

Susan Wolfer, a mother of two, is one of those worried parents.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t surprised by it at all, but I’m disgusted by it,” she said.

Parents say they want an investigation by the Board. They, along with Councilman Washington, expect better moral judgment for the leaders guiding their youth.

"Justice should be served," Washington said. "Whatever needs to be done, right is right, wrong is wrong."

The police officer was released from the hospital.  Hudson is being held in jail on $10,000 bail.

The next Board of Education meeting takes place Monday.

Mom, Sons Killed Crossing Road Honored

A mother and her three children are honored a year after the four lost their lives crossing a busy stretch of Roosevelt Boulevard.

The City of Philadelphia renamed a crosswalk that passes over the Boulevard at 2nd Street in the Feltonville neighborhood after 28-year-old Samara Banks, who died last July when a speeding driver struck her and her 4 sons as they walked home.

Banks, along with 7-month-old Saamir Williams, 23-month-old Saa-sean Williams and 4-year-old Saa-deem Griffin, were killed.  Her oldest son, Saa-yon Griffin, survived the accident.

The crosswalk, which was added sometime after the fatal crash, will be known as Banks Way.

The name came about after Philadelphia City Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez introduced legislation in May calling for the new moniker.

Banks Way will “memorialize her spirit and character and serve as a reminder to cars and pedestrians to always travel safely,” the resolution said.

The busy thoroughfare is known as one of the most dangerous stretches of roadway throughout the country.

Khusen Akhmedov of Lancaster and Ahmen Holloman of Philadelphia are both facing murder charges for the deaths of Banks and three sons.

Philadelphia Police say the two men were street racing when the 2012 Audi allegedly driven by Akhmedov plowed into the family.

Akhmedov is already behind bars. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty in December in an unrelated Medicare fraud case.

Drivers traveling on a busy Lower Southampton road Friday had to navigate an unusual obstruction -- a gurney carrying a corpse.

The rear door of a van carrying the deceased person malfunctioned as the vehicle was traveling along the 100 block of East Street Road near the Bucks Crossing Shopping Center around noon, according to the Bucks County Coroner's Office.

A photo from the scene shows the dead body covered with a sheet sitting in the middle of the street as cars passed.

County officials say the coroner employee driving the van realized what had occurred immediately and circled back to the scene.

A bystander helped the driver remove the body from the road, according to LevittownNow.Com.

"The Bucks County Coroner’s Office deeply regrets this incident and will take steps to ensure that it is not repeated in the future,” a county news release said.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

Police are searching for two men who assaulted a SEPTA bus driver overnight in North Philadelphia.

"Somebody wants to hurt and assault somebody on SEPTA or to hurt a driver. What did that driver do besides or show up for work?" said SEPTA rider Tiffany Williams-Hoyle.

The beating happened along SEPTA's Route 54 bus at W. Lehigh Avenue and N. 22nd Street around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, police said. The bus was heading from Strawnberry Mansion to Port Richmond.

Ninety percent of SEPTA buses have cameras on them, but this bus did not and was scheduled to be outfitted with cameras in the next year or two.

The men fled from the bus right after. Police believe the suspects got into a white Mercedes Benz with Pennsylvania tags.

The bus driver suffered a head injury in the assault and was treated at Temple University Hospital, police said.

Officials are working to determine what sparked the beating.

Swastika Banner Sparks Outrage

Beachgoers in parts of New York and New Jersey saw a startling image in the sky Saturday afternoon: A plane towing a banner with a swastika-themed message.

The banner had swastika imagery and promoted the website "proswastika.org."

An organization called The International Raelian Movement was behind the banners, and the group’s spokesperson, Thomas Kaenzig, told NBC 4 New York they aim to reclaim a symbol they believe was “hijacked by the Nazis.”

“As long there are people still offended by it, it means we need to continue our work, we need to continue to rehabilitate the symbol," Kaenzig said.

Several NBC 4 New York viewers called to say that they saw the banner and were offended by it, and a city politician said it is extremely insensitive.

"I am deeply offended and hurt,” said Councilman Mark Treyger of Brooklyn. “Try explaining to someone who witnessed their loved ones who were butchered by people under that Nazi symbol that it's anything but a hateful one."

Tesla Gets OK to Open Pa. Dealerships

Gov. Tom Corbett has signed legislation allowing Tesla to open five dealerships in Pennsylvania.

Tesla pushed for the bill, signed last week by Corbett, because its business model had run up against a state law prohibiting manufacturers from also acting as a vehicle dealer.

The bill won swift approval after the sponsor, Sen. John Rafferty of Montgomery County, introduced it in June.

The law applies any electric vehicle maker and carries certain conditions, including that it deals exclusively in its own brand and it doesn't hold a controlling interest in another make.

Rafferty says a similar exemption for Saturn was allowed in 2000. Tesla had already opened a dealership in the King of Prussia Mall in suburban Philadelphia, although Rafferty and state officials couldn't explain how it had qualified for a license.

Meanwhile next door in New Jersey, Tesla remains barred from selling its cars from the company's Garden State showrooms. The state's auto dealers has been fighting the measure arguing that the company should use a dealership model instead of selling directly to consumers. That law remains in the state legislature.

A person was charged with driving under the influence after neighbors and police chased him down on a North Philadelphia street this afternoon.

The arrest came after a handful of people were rushed to a trauma center after a Cadillac slammed into the paratransit bus they were riding in, causing it to overturn.

"The Cadillac had the red light, but he ran it and hit the paratransit truck and flipped it over on its side," said witness Alexander Kuilan.

Kuilan heard screams and observed the driver hanging from his seatbelt inside the bus.

The paratransit bus flipped over at N. 6th and Cambria Streets around 2 p.m. on Sunday, city fire officials tell NBC10.com.

Another witness heard a bang and saw the paratransit bus go down.

Officials say six people were hurt when the small bus flipped over. One of the passengers, a 30-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries. The crash caused a nearby road side to fall down, hitting pedestrians on the street.

Witnesses helped the injured get out of the vehicle. Then they turned their attention to the people inside the Cadillac who then took off. Neighbors ran after those who fled the scene.

All were taken to Temple University Hospital but none appeared to have life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Here's what you need to know as you get ready to start another work week. Monday's temperature range will be 85 to 89 degrees. Sounds like a perfect summer day. But, despite the 80 degree weather, you may not be feeling cheery.

What you will need is an umbrella.

A stormy start to the work week is expected with isolated storms, and moist and humid air, according to NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Brittney Shipp.

The National Weather Service reports the wet weather could produce damaging winds and that hail is possible. If the storms stay in the same area, flash flooding is likely although Tuesday poses the greatest risk for flooding, according to the NWS. This phenomena is called "training."

During the day, Monday will be mostly cloudy. Both Monday and Tuesday will experience isolated thunderstorms in the evening along the I-95 corridor similar.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather team is tracking the weather pattern and updated information will be posted here.
