Polar Vortex: Don't Believe the Hype

0
0

With news of temperatures in the 40s and 50s in the Great Lakes next week, talk of a polar vortex is running rampant.

Don’t believe the hype, says NBC10 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz:

“It’s not the polar vortex,” Schwartz said. “It’s an unusually cool weather pattern that’s coming into, let’s say the Great Lakes area, and that happens even in July sometimes.

“That’s what the weather is: It varies. And so just because the weather is very cool or very hot, that doesn’t mean it’s anything unusual or freakish. Weather does change dramatically. That’s what makes it interesting.”

But the National Weather Service office in Chicago didn’t appear to get the message. This is what it tweeted Thursday with an accompanying “polar vortex” graphic:

Soon after, the main office of the National Weather Service made it clear the “polar vortex” was not at work. Its forecast discussion mentioned that "A DEEP UPPER LOW ... NOT THE POLAR VORTEX" would be swinging through the Great Lakes.

"I think people are pretty sensitive to those words," Amy Seeley, a meterologist with the National Weather Service, told the Associated Press.

She said the Chicago office quickly realized it made the wrong call.

“Some people like to write provocative headlines,” Schwartz said. “That happens in entertainment, it happens in politics, [and] it also happens in weather.”

Philly Rapper Sentenced for Parole Violation

A judge has sentenced Meek Mill, a rapper and native of Philadelphia, to spend several months behind bars for violating his parole multiple times.

Twenty-seven-year-old Robert Williams -- Meek Mill's legal name -- will spend three to six months behind bars for violating his parole.

The North Philly rapper was convicted in August 2008 on multiple gun and drug charges. He served eight months behind bars for those charges and was set to complete his 5-year probation in 2015.

But the District Attorney voiced concerns over Williams' behavior over the past few years.

"His twitter accounts being derogatory to the probation department and this DA and others in the court system," said Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Noel Ann DeSantis, who said he also missed meetings with his parole officer.

Williams is set to take the stage at Temple University's Liacouras Center for his "Homecoming Tour" July 19, but Philadelphia Common Please Court Judge Genece E. Brinkley had ordered the rapper to stop peforming from July 11 to Aug. 11.

"The judge found that all these were technical violations of his probation," DeSantis said.

His July 11 concert at Echostage in Washington has been canceled, according to the venue's website.

Officials with the Liacouras Center said the July 19 "show will go on as planned."

Gary Silver, Williams' defense attorney, said the technical violations didn't warrant incarceration.

"He has done so much on the positive side," Silver said. "So much to follow all the rules and regulations for many years."

The rapper showed his positive side earlier this weeek when he visited the Southwest Philly neighborhood devastated by a fatal fire that killed 4 children last Saturday. Williams said he plans to donate money to the victims.

Trump Plaza to Close: Sources

The Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City will close this fall, according to multiple sources.

New Jersey State Sen. Jim Whelan (D-Atlantic) told NBC10 he expects WARN notices to go out to the casino's 900 employees Monday.

Employers in New Jersey are required to provide at least 60 days notice to their workers when planning mass layoffs.

The timing indicates the Trump Plaza will shut its doors in September -- the same month Harry Hurley of WPG Talk Radio 1450 AM reported the casino will close.

Roger Gros, the publisher of Global Gaming Business, also tells NBC10 the casino will be ending its operations after more than 20 years in the resort town.

The once thriving gambling industry in Atlantic City began to tumble several years ago as visitors opted to roll the dice at other casinos throughout the Northeast.

Caesars Entertainment announced in June that its Showboat Casino and Hotel will close Aug. 31. More than 1,500 workers lost their jobs when The Atlantic Club shut down in January.

An attorney for Revel Casino and Hotel told a bankruptcy court judge that if a buyer did not take over the struggling casino soon, it would also close.

Heads Up! 'Supermoon' Appears Saturday

0
0

The full moon on Saturday will appear to be unusually big. In fact, it will be a "supermoon."

That's the nickname for full moons that happen when our celestial neighbor is relatively close to Earth.

That distance varies because the moon follows an elliptical orbit. When it's close and full, it appears bigger and brighter than normal, although in fact the difference can be hard to detect.

If you see Saturday's moon close to the horizon it may seem huge, but that's just an illusion caused by its position in the sky.

Two other full moons this summer, on Aug. 10 and Sept. 9, are also supermoons.

It's not all that unusual to have a supermoon. There were three in a row last year.

President Barack Obama is slated to visit Delaware next week with a stop planned at the site of the tilting I-495 bridge that has been closed for more than a month, according to The News Journal.

The trip would be Obama's first public appearance in the First State since 2009.

The visit is not on the President's official White House schedule. But The News Journal reports Obama's advance team was making security arrangements Friday at the Port of Wilmington.

Obama has made

stops at other bridges

earlier this year as part of his agenda to highlight infrastructure issues throughout the country. The face time is part of a larger push by the administartion to

create jobs

by attracting private money to help rebuild roads, bridges and other public works projects.

Delaware Department of Transportation officials closed a portion of I-495 that spans the Christina River in Wilmington June 2.

An engineer firm working on an unrelated project noticed two 50-foot tall pilings supporting the bridge were tilting several days earlier.

Officials say the temporary repairs, originally scheduled to be completed by Labor Day, are ahead of schedule. Southbound lanes could reopen ahead of the September holiday, although DelDOT have not announced a specific date.

The bridge typically carries about 90,000 vehicles daily.

Dog Walkers Turned Town Watch

0
0

The term "watch dog" has taking on a whole new meaning in several communities throughout the country thanks to a local program.

The National Association of Town Watch, based out of Wynnewood, Pa., started the Dog Walker Watch program just six months ago and it's been increasing in popularity ever since.

Executive Director Matt Peskin came up with the program from walking his own dog around the neighborhood. He noticed many fellow walkers often had their head down and weren't really taking in their surroundings.

This program hopes to change that behavior and channel it into a way to help fight crime.

Dog walkers are being encouraged to be on high alert for suspicious activity while taking their four-legged friends out for some exercise in their neighborhoods. Not only are they keeping their pooches healthy, they're keeping watch on the happenings in their 'hood!

According to National Town Watch website, the program is organized by local town watch groups and law enforcement agencies conduct a training session before sending out the "troops."

The dog-walkers are trained to “effectively observe and report criminal activity.”

Although founded in a Philly suburb, the innovative program has grown outside of Pennsylvania.

Miami Township Police in Southern Ohio kicked off their Dog Walker Watch just last month as did Suisun City, Calif., according to the Association.

Right now there's about 650 areas registered in the program. With National Night Out approaching Peskin says he's confident that number will double following the event that will take place across the country Aug. 5 to promote involvement in crime prevention activities and neighborhood camaraderie.

Ultimately Peskin hopes that criminals may start to notice dog walkers and question whether they're in the program and going to report something that they saw.

The Dog Walker Watch "will give them (the criminal) less opportunity and force them elsewhere."

If the Dog Walker Watch sounds like a good idea for your community, sign up here.

911 Not for Power Outages

0
0

Thousands of homes were affected by power outages after strong storms rolled through the region last week. Fallen trees on power lines were mostly to blame, but with the lights out, residents were unsure of what to do.

So they called 911.

The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety handled over 7,000 911 calls during that storm, which lasted about an hour, according to Cheltenham Township Police

Due to the high influx of emergency calls, the department says that emegency crews were not able to respond to all of them.

Cheltonham Police took to their facebook page to clarify what constitutes as a 911 emergency.

"You should refrain from calling 911 to report only power outages or to ask when power will be restored. The 911 call takers & dispatchers do not have access to that information nor can they expedite power being restored."

The Cheltenham Township Police Department reminds citizens to call 911 for any police, fire, or EMS events during a storm. Fallen trees, flooded roadways, telephone poles on fire, and fallen wires are all reasons to call 911.

If you experience a non-emergency power outage, call PECO at 1-800-841-4141.
