Three people have been hospitalized after a stabbing at a North Philadelphia home early Wednesday.

The violent act took place around 12:30 a.m. inside a house along the 200 block of West Albanus Street in the city's Olney section, Philadelphia Police said.

Detectives say the stabbing took place following an argument between several people.

Two women in their 20s and a man in his 30s suffered stab wounds, police said. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. All remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Officers were able to take one person into custody related to the stabbing. No charges have been filed at this time.

Liberian Ambassador Meeting With City Over Deadly Fire

The Ambassador of Liberia is meeting with Philadelphia city leaders on Wednesday to discuss tensions between the Liberian community in Southwest Philadelphia and city agencies after this weekend's deadly fire that killed four children.

Ambassador Jeremiah Suluteh is sitting down with members of Philadelphia City Council, Mayor Michael Nutter's administration, the Pa. State Senate and Human Relations Commission at 10 a.m. inside City Hall.

The meeting is part of a two-day visit in light of strained relations between Liberian immigrants and the city following Saturday's massive fire along the 6500 block of Gesner Street. The early morning fire claimed the lives of four children, destroyed eight homes and left nearly 40 people without a place to live. The fire cause remains unclear.

A number of community members have argued that firefighters were late to respond to the fire. Some claimed it took crews up to 30 minutes to start fighting the blaze. A volatile protest outside the local firehouse led to the arrest of three people.

However, the city says the response was appropriate and denied delays saying the first crews arrived in 3 minutes. Officials released 911 dispatch data and calls on Tuesday to back up their dispute.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer pointed to the first emergency calls that stated several homes were already burning when the call came in. He said the entire block would have burnt to the ground should firefighters have taken 30 minutes to respond.

Suluteh toured the devastation along Gesner Street on Tuesday and likened the partially hollowed-out block to a "war zone."

"This reminds me of my own situation back home. When I stepped out there I thought I was back in a war zone where innocent children were slaughtered," he said. "It breaks my heart."

He also met with fire victims and community leaders to learn what their issues are and plans to bring them up with the city today.

"The message is, the first thing is to keep calm and to engage the government to see how in the future how can we protect our children," the ambassador said.

"Punkin Chunkin" Headed to Dover Speedway

The World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) is officially moving its location to grounds owned by Dover International Speedway for its nationally renowned pumpkin throwing competition, scheduled for October 24-26.

After two trips to the location the team was extremely pleased and the deal was approved 72-5 last week.

Punkin Chunkin Association president John Huber said the group began their search for alternate locations when they were notified that the previous event host, Dale Wheatley of Wheatley Farms, would no longer host the event on his land.

Wheatley's decision stems from a 2011 lawsuit in which a pumpkin spotter claims he seriously injured his spine when he hit a bump on his ATV and it rolled over him. He is now suing the farm and the Punkin Chunkin Association for over four million dollars.

"WCPCA leadership opened discussion with Dover International Speedway to look at the feasibility of using the Speedway property to host our annual event. The DIS leadership team has been very helpful in evaluating this location for use and has offered it to us provided it meets our needs and both parties can meet on terms and conditions," he said last April.

The Dover International Speedway is a 750-acre complex that has served as the host of many NASCAR events, as well as several other large events, including the annual Firefly Music Festival.

Although it’s a big push due to the close timeframe his team is already in full swing. Hosting the event on a farm lead to creating parking areas, providing restrooms, lighting, etc. but the amenities currently provided by the new location will make it a lot easier on the staff to prepare for the event.

Delaware Tourism officials say the fall tradition attracts more than 100,000 visitors from around the world each year, and reels in millions of dollars in annual revenue for the state, and for local businesses. In 2013, the event drew $100,000 in ticket sales.

The money raised during the event is used towards community scholarships and charities.

As of Today, 107 days remain before the big event.

Falling Wood Crushes Truck's Cab

Big sheets of plywood came crashing down onto the cab of a work truck in Center City Philadelphia, putting a sizable dent into the cab and disrupting traffic near the intersection of 15th and Chestnut.

The accident happened around 11 a.m. when a worker was using the boom crane on a Tague Lumber truck to get the wood through an upper-floor window of a building on 15th.

No one was hurt.

Licenses and Inspections (L&I)Commissioner Carlton Williams explained in a statement that the wood somehow became dislodged from the crane and fell. The contractor on site, Clemens Construction, had the required permits, Williams said, adding that crane vehicles are regulated by the Federal Department of Transportation and not by L&I.

The Tague Lumber truck was working right outside the offices of City Paper. They posted a picture on their website, speculating that it might have been a stack of sheet rock instead of plywood.

Another car that was passing by was also damaged, according to City Paper.

Severe T-Storm Watch Canceled

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been canceled for the entire area.

Officials initially believed the system would drop severe storms over the region. They later determined that we're only in for some isolated showers and storms, though nothing severe.

The news is a relief for thousands of customers who are still without power after Tuesday's severe storm. The violent storms that pounded our region knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of households -- some of which won't get their power back on until Friday.

Thursday and Friday, we're seeing a chance of showers, but by Saturday we'll be enjoying mostly sunny skies with a high around 88.

Sadly, Sunday will bring with it more isolated thunderstorms breaking the streak for what would have been our eighth beautiful weekend in a row.

The stormy weather continues through the beginning of next week. By Wednesday, we'll be dry with partly cloudy skies.

Elderly Woman Knocked Out, Robbed During Home Invasion

An elderly woman is recovering after she was knocked unconscious and robbed during a home invasion in the Cobbs Creek section of the city.

"I'm shocked that it happened to me," said 91-year-old Audrey Washington. "I didn't think this would ever happen to me and I'm mad at the same time."

Washington says she was coming back from a day at a senior center when she returned to her home on the 6200 block of Carpenter Street shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday. As soon as the retired teacher stepped foot into her house, a fist suddenly struck her in the face. Two home invaders who were inside began to attack her.

"They grabbed both my hands and I had rings on," Washington said.

Despite the danger, Washington refused to go down without a fight.

"Somebody put their hand to my face and I bit the finger," she said while laughing. "That was sticking in my mouth."

While Washington can smile about it now, it was anything but a laughing matter at the time. As she continued to fight back, one of the men punched her in the face again, this time knocking her out cold.

"When I came to I was missing my rings and my fingers were hurt and I was sore," Washington said.

Police say the two thieves stole Washington's television along with two rings, including a diamond ring her husband gave her for her birthday before he died. They then escaped through a side window and fled down an alley. Investigators say they recovered everything but the valuable diamond ring.

Washington was taken to Mercy Hospital where she was treated for minor facial injuries. Despite her ordeal and loss, Washington managed to keep a positive spirit.

"I try to keep a good spirit about everything," Washington said. "I asked the Lord to keep me for another day."

No arrests have been made at this time. Police say the suspects are two black males, both standing 5-foot-8 and between the ages of 18 and 20. One suspect was wearing a black and white shirt with brown pants while the other was wearing a long gray sweatshirt and dark pants.

If you have any information on their whereabouts, please call Philadelphia Police.

Birthday Party Deck Collapse Injures 6

A little girl's birthday party is one she won't soon forget after a backyard deck collapsed sending six party-goers to the hospital Tuesday night in Carbon County.

Police tell WBRE that there were about 11 people on the deck of a Penn Forest Township rental property when it collapsed.

"The people were trapped under the collapsed deck and the fire department had to rescue them," Carbon County EMA Director Mark Nalesnik told WBRE.

Six people were sent to area hospitals following the collapse. Four of those victims were transported by medical helicopter. Several others suffered bumps and bruises, according to police.

"A little girl was hobbling around," said neighbor Judy Bonislawski. "The other little girl had a bad cut on her head."

It's unknown at this time why the deck collapsed, but officials say there's no indication that too many people were on it.

Neighbors tell WBRE that the owners of the property just had it inspected and were told everything was fine.

Two classic rock bands gave a big thank you to the Philadelphia Fire Department for coming to their aid last week.

The tour buses for Styx and Foreigner caught fire on July 2 in Northern Liberties. The buses were used for crews supporting the bands, in town to play at WMGK's Let Freedom Rock Fest.

Foreigner let fans know everyone was fine.

The fire started on the Styx bus and spread to the Foreigner bus, WMGK’s promotion director Dan Fein said.

Both buses were empty at the time, and people had already removed most of their belongings from them. No gear was damaged, Fein said.

To thank the Philadelphia Fire Department for their efforts, the bands gave $10,000 to the Philadelphia Fire Department Local #22 Widows Fund. During their show at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden last Thursday, the bands donated proceeds from the sale of their joint compilation album "The Soundtrack of Summer" to the local fireman's charity.

The groups were two of the hottest bands back in the '70s and '80s, Styx on the strength of hits like “Show Me the Way” and “Rockin’ the Paradise” and Foreigner with hits “Cold as Ice” and “Hot Blooded."

Alleged Upper Darby Bedroom Intruder Arrested

The alleged "bedroom intruder" is now in custody. On Wednesday, police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Tyrell Booker of Yeadon, Pa. Booker is accused of breaking into the Upper Darby homes of five women between April and June.

During each incident, he allegedly stood over the women inside and watched them as they slept. Investigators say he targeted girls and women between the ages of 16 and 32.

“He stands over the women until they awake,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said last month. “When they awake, they’re startled. They scream and he runs out the door.”

The most recent incident took place on June 26 on Clinton Road. The 52-year-old homeowner grabbed a bat next to her bed and Booker allegedly ran off. Investigators suspect he was after the woman’s daughter.

The other incidents occurred on April 16 on the 7200 block of Guilford Road, May 1 on the 7000 block of Atlantic Avenue, June 17 on the 7100 block of Seaford Road and June 20 on the 200 block of Sheffield Road.

During one case, investigators say a woman woke up to find Booker touching her groin before he ran off.

So far Booker, who is on probation for a burglary conviction, has only been charged for one incident though police expect to eventually charge him for all five.

"We feel very strongly that this is the individual responsible for all five even though we only charged him with one," Chitwood said. "None of the other victims could identify the male."

Cafe Fights Landlord Over Pending Eviction

A group of ten boys are eating cheese-covered omelets with sides of bacon at The Corner Café in Abington, Montgomery County while 34-year-old Rebecca Hagelin has lunch with her mom across the restaurant.

“Usually I come here for breakfast,” said Hagelin, who was one of about 75 customers at the 120-seat diner on Wednesday.  “They have the best blueberry pancakes.”

But Hagelin is running out of time to enjoy her favorite morning dish as the property manager, King of Prussia-based Kravco Company LLC, is forcing the nearly 14-year-old family business to vacate the 3,600-square-foot space in the Huntingdon Valley Shopping Center.

“They don’t care about mom and pop businesses,” said John Graff, The Corner Café’s co-owner.

During summer 2012, Graff, along with the owners of the other businesses in the shopping center, met with Kravco officials to discuss the complex’s future.

Graff says that meeting was the first time Kravco’s representatives told him the Corner Café would remain at its current location, while several other businesses would not have their leases renewed.

Those shops, like Extreme Karate and Salon En-Jolie, occupied retail space in a mostly vacant portion of the commercial property, which would soon become a new medical center.

“They assured me I was safe,” said Graff, who invested about $100,000 upgrading equipment and remodeling the restaurant over the past two years.

But when Graff contacted his landlord about exercising the 5-year extension option on his lease, they refused.

“They lied to me. They flat-out lied,” he said. “I would not have invested one dime if I knew I had no chance of staying here.”

Despite what the property management firm may have promised during in-person meetings, a clause in the lease allows Kravco to boot the Huntingdon Valley breakfast favorite when the lease expires on Jan. 31, 2015.

“Tenant’s reported Gross Sales for 2013 did not meet the required amount of $2,300,000,” Kravco’s Chief Operating Officer Lisa Fair Plisken wrote in a letter to the small business owner.

The stipulation – known as percentage rent – is common in commercial leases. It grants the landlord extra rent based on a percentage of gross sales.

Kravco representatives declined to comment, but Graff admits gross sales last year were around $800,000, less than half what the contract demands.

Graff, who inherited the lease terms when he purchased the business nearly 13 years ago, insists Kravco is only concerned with the bottom line, missing the importance the local eatery brings to the community.

He has 14 employees, about half who are full-time, that will be out of work.

And customers love the social atmosphere.

"I like the waitresses -- they all know my name," said 64-year-old George Tomezsko, who has visited the diner regularly for 10 years. "It is a friendly, family place."

“We’re devastated,” said 89-year-old Stella Lukiewski, who has lunch at the Corner Cafe with her husband, Edward, five times a week. “I can’t imagine going anyplace else.”

Unwilling to go down without a fight, Graff started a petition, which has already gained 1,700 signatures, and launched a Save the Corner Café Facebook page.

And his customers, many of whom voiced their support to Graff as he doled out change at the register, are prepared to battle alongside the business owner.

“It’ll be tragic if this place closes,” Lukiewski said.

“Where are we going to go to eat?” asked Hagelin. “It is the only good breakfast place in the area.”

Graff acknowledged that the official documents will make this an uphill battle, but says Kravco reiterated their verbal commitment to keeping his business as a tenant as recently as October 2013.

“I was misled,” Graff insists. “I’m finding out big corporate could care less.”
