Dog Found Bleeding, Trying to Escape Through Window

Manayunk resident Yasmin Williams said she was driving home from an appointment late Thursday afternoon when, to her surprise, she discovered a bleeding dog hanging in the front window of a home on the 4100 block of Ridge Avenue in the East Falls section of the city.

"I was driving by and I heard the dog barking, and I looked, and she was hanging through the broken glass, bleeding," she said. "I had to pull over, just because I'm a dog owner myself and I wanted to make sure that she was okay."

Williams said the animal was in pretty bad shape.

"She was bleeding from the mouth, her tongue, it was like a little piece hanging from it, and there was like blood up underneath her chin."

Williams says she dialed 911, waved down a police car that was passing by and called the PSPCA to try to get help for the animal, which appeared to have been left home alone by its owners.

While she was worried about the condition of the dog, Williams said she did not necessarily think that the dog's owners had been negligent in leaving the pet alone in the house.

"When you work during the day, you do have to go ahead and make arrangements for your animals. So I don’t think that’s necessarily the issue. It just may be an issue of how secure the window was," she said.

"I don’t look at her coming through the window as a necessary negligence. She is an animal."

Police and animal control officers used a plastic grate to keep the dog from jumping through jagged pieces of glass in the window while they waited for the dog's owners and the SPCA to arrive.

Five people were taken by ambulance to Philly hospitals and dozens more made the trip on their own after being sickened by carbon monoxide overnight at a Days Inn hotel.

During last night's storm, the hotel, which is located along the Roosevelt Boulevard in the Crescentville area, lost power.

Staffers turned on a generator in the basement.

According to police on the scene, that generator filled the building with carbon monoxide, which is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and potentially deadly gas.

Shortly after midnight, people began to get nauseous and dizzy. The hotel was evacuated as emergency crews arrived and took over.

Close to 100 people are currently staying at the hotel.

The building was aired out and people were allowed back in before daybreak.
