A man, sitting on his front steps, was shot by two teens late Tuesday in Philadelphia, police say.

The 26-year-old victim was shot around 11 p.m. on Tuesday outside his home along the 2100 block of West Spencer Street in the Germantown section of the city, police say.

Investigators said the two teens, one on a bike, passed the man and exchanged words. One of the teens then pulled out the gun and fired at least six shots. They then fled the scene.

The man was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center with a wound to his right thigh. He's listed in stable condition, police said.

Both teens are described as thin with one wearing a black shirt and the other a white shirt.

Philadelphia Police are asking anyone with information to call their tipline at 215.686.TIPS.

An alleged player in a sophisticated high school drug ring on Philadelphia's Main Line will be arraigned on charges he sold illicit substances.

Daniel McGrath, 18, is one of nine alleged "sub-dealers" who prosecutors say sold drugs to teens as part of the Main Line Drug Take Over Project. The ring, helmed by prep school educated Neil Scott and Timothy Brooks, sold marijuana, hash oil, cocaine and MDMA at several swanky high schools and local colleges, according to prosecutors.

McGrath allegedly sold drugs at the private prep school The Haverford School, which is also the alma mater of Scott and Brooks.

The teen is expected to be arraigned on a bevy of charges -- including Corrupt Organizations, Conspiracy, Possession of Drugs With the Intent to Deliver -- inside a Montgomery County courtroom on Wednesday morning.

His alleged co-sub dealers have all waived their arraignments and are scheduled for a court appearance on July 30.

Grand Jury to Investigate Alleged Political Corruption

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams today announced that a grand jury has been appointed to investigate allegations of corruption against several Pennsylvania legislators.

Williams made the announcement at a press conference at the Ray Harley Training Center at 3 South Penn Square on Wednesday.

The grand jury investigation stems from numerous reports that surfaced in March involving Tyron Ali, a Philadelphia man who allegedly wore a wire and captured evidence of several elected state representatives accepting bribes in exchange for political favors.

“Now normally, I would not even state publicly that a case has been submitted to the grand jury. But because of the unusually high profile of this case, I thought it was essential for the public to understand that I won’t allow it to just disappear, without accountability," William said.

Williams said he was not at liberty to state names or the exact number of officials that the 36 member grand jury will be investigating but said "the investigation is much more expansive than what has been previously reported" and that "there are a lot of people involved."

The DA said he is hopeful that the grand jury will "get to the truth" of the allegations and that its findings will restore the public's faith in the criminal justice system.

"The public has to believe that the criminal justice system is fair, and that it works," Williams said.

"We need to assure them that there's not a separate standard for Pookie and Man-Man selling a couple of vials on the corner and the officials serving in the capital rotunda."

Williams said the audio and video evidence of the alleged corrupt acts is compelling, but declined to offer any opinion on whether he believes any legislators will be convicted for the alleged crimes.

The grand jury will review evidence supplied by the DA's office and may issue a report to the public with recommendations for official action. It may also make direct recommendations for criminal charges against one or more individuals.

No direct time frame for the investigation was given, but Williams says he expects to report results within "months, and not years."

A teen who allegedly recorded himself beating a homeless man as part of a "knockout game-style" attack in Delaware County has turned himself into police.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said on Wednesday Trent Epps surrendered to police for his alleged role in the attack at the Aronimink SEPTA trolley stop on June 11.

A first-person video posted to Facebook shows a teen, believed to be Epps, walking up to the victim inside a headhouse at the stop. After exchanging a few words with the man, who was sitting on a bench, the teen decks him in the face nearly knocking him out.

Chitwood called the unprovoked attack "pure evil" and categorized it as a "Knockout Game" style assault.

"He can't post any Knockout videos on Facebook from jail," Chitwood tweeted after the teen's surrender.

Upper Darby Police plan to charge Epps with Assault, Terroristic Threats, Reckless Endangerment and Conspiracy, Chitwood said.

Man Drowns, Rescuer Needs Rescue

A 48-year-old Wildwood man drowned in Lake Nummy, Dennis Township, New Jersey last night and the stranger who tried to save him ended up having to be rescued.

Manuel Osorio was swimming alone in the Cape May County lake and appeared to be in distress, according to a family member who called police shortly after 6 p.m.

Another man saw the situation and attempted to swim out to rescue Osorio. However, he couldn’t reach him and became fatigued himself, so a member of Osorio's family had to rescue him. Police don't know the identity of the stranger.

State Park Police officers arrived within minutes, but Osorio was already underwater. Divers from the Downe Township Dive Rescue Squad pulled Osorio from the water at 8:38 p.m. A medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene.

Officials are unclear on how far out Osario was. Lake Nummy is about 26 acres and 10 feet deep in most areas with very dark water.

Signs were posted yesterday that no swimming was allowed at the beach, and no lifeguards were on duty.

12 Arrested in Major SJ Heroin Bust

Twelve people are in custody Wednesday following what Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor said this is the largest narcotics investigation in the county’s history.

“This was truly a joint effort,” Taylor said. “Law enforcement should be commended -- not only federal and state, but local.”

Drugs with a street value of more than $3 million were seized when officers executed search warrants in Wildwood, Cape May, Vineland, Middle Township and Burleigh Wednesday.

“So far, the equivalent of 182,000 bags of heroin, with a street value in excess of $3.6 million were seized,” Taylor said. “One hand gun and approximately $200,000 dollars of cash were also seized.”

Officials also searched six different cars, finding approximately 8,000 more bags of heroin from one of the vehicles in Cape May County.

Police arrested Carlos Guzman and Hector Ramos, the alleged ringleaders. They're facing charges so serious, they could spend the rest of their lives in jail if convicted. Among their charges, manufacturing, distributing or dispensing a controlled, dangerous substance.

Miguel Claudio, Juan A. Lopez, Maritza Jenkins, Toby Simmons, Jose I. Baez, Edward Perez, Angelica Alvarado, Romulo Rojas Navarro, and Badie M. Hmaidan were also arrested and charged with similar, but not as serious charges.

“My philosophy has always been we don’t put users in jail,” Taylor said. “Dealers we put in jail. But if they’re selling drugs and approaching our teenagers with heroin, we’re going to put them in jail for as long as we can.”

Both Taylor and Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae say Wednesday's bust is a big step in combating the heroin epidemic.

“Any time that something effects one county, it has a regional effect,” Webb-McRae said. “I believe this is a big tool to show that we are fighting this epidemic, and law enforcement will respond to the people that market this to the young people and our citizens in our two counties.”

“We’re trying to attack the heroin epidemic on several fronts,” Taylor said. “Education to try and prevent it, and law enforcement to try and stop it.”

The investigation is ongoing. Both county prosecutors anticipate more arrests.

A woman is clinging to life after being shot five times and police are trying to find the distinctive looking couple who took off running after the shooting and may be involved.

The woman they are looking for is heavy-set with pink hair. The man is thin with a reddish-colored beard and black baseball cap. They both fled on foot, headed north on Haldeman Avenue.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex in the 9900 block of Haldeman just before 3 p.m. The victim, a 23-year-old woman who has not been identified, was rushed to the nearest police station by a man in a van that contained a lot of cash, according to police. That's about a two-minute drive from the crime scene. Police then rushed her to the hospital where she is in critical condition.

Police are trying to figure out if the shooting was random or if the victim was targeted. Along with tracking down the couple, they want to talk to the man who drove the wounded woman to the 7th District police station at the corner of Bowler Street and Bustleton Avenue.

Teen Abducted, Held for Ransom

A Philly teenager was abducted and held hostage in a bizarre plot that included ransom demands, shoestrings and a father trying to chase down the captors himself on one of the city’s busiest highways.

Police tonight are still trying to piece the story together, but here’s how family members say it all played out.

The teen, a 15-year-old, was grabbed by three gunmen while he was walking home from school in Northeast Philadelphia. That trek takes him along the 10,000 block of Ferndale Street.

The gunmen called the 9th grader’s parents, demanding anything they had of value.

With teen in tow, they drove to the family’s home in a Silver Suburban station wagon. They tied up the parents with shoestrings and collected their ransom, which included jewelry, $30,000 in cash and the home’s surveillance video system.

The gunmen then took off with the teen.

His dad, who was able to work his way out of the shoestrings, jumped in his car and chased the abductors but lost them on the Roosevelt Boulevard, where he then flagged down a police officer.

Meanwhile, the teenager was somehow able to free himself about fifteen miles away near the Philadelphia Art Museum.

The teen is not hurt. He has been reunited with his family. Detectives are the home as well interviewing him to get his first-hand account.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.

Bees Takeover Pa. Turnpike Interchange

Thousands of bees created a road hazard on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Wednesday morning by swarming the King of Prussia interchange area.

Commuters noticed the bees and alerted authorities.

Pennsylvania State Police sent maintenance and exterminator crews to the eastbound and westbound area at the exit 326 interchange to remove them bees.

When the bee experts arrived, they concluded their activity was normal. They will be monitored. If the bees don't move on, they will be captured and relocated.

"There is no danger to anyone there. It's a natural occurring swarming activity that results from overpopulation in the hives this time of year," said Vincent Talucci Jr., of the Pa. Turnpike.

Boomers, Not Millennials, Gaining Jobs: Report

0
0

Millennials across the Delaware Valley are losing to baby boomers in the job race as the older generation outpaced their younger counterparts in workforce growth from 2007 to 2013, according to a recent study.

"Companies were cautious. They were trying to do more with less and that affected millennials the most,” said Ryan Hunt, a senior career advisor with CareerBuilder, which released the report earlier this month. "The jobs they are not going to add right away during a recession or a tepid recovery is entry level.”

The number of jobs held by millennials – defined as those aged 22- to 34-years-old – remained flat, increasing a meager 0.2 percent in Philadelphia during the six-year period, according to the report.  Meanwhile, Philly’s boomers, aged 55- to 64-years-old, held 9 percent more jobs in 2013 than they did in 2007.

Millennials in Atlantic City fared even worse. Jobs held by the group fell 7 percent as boomers’ jobs jumped 7 percent, the report shows.

“Atlantic City’s economy has really suffered over the last several years, partly because of the growth of casinos elsewhere in the region,” said Ryan Sweet, a director with West Chester, Pa.-based Moody’s Analytics.

The lifestyle choices distinguishing millennials from other age groups – renting instead of buying a home and ditching cars in favor of public transit – also contributed to the drop in AC, Sweet explained.

"They are more mobile,” he said. “So if the job market is rough in Atlantic City, they can go to a more dynamic metro.”

The lack of millennial job growth in Philadelphia mirrors the national trend.

Across the U.S., jobs held by 22- to 34-year-olds rose a paltry 0.3 percent while boomers’ jobs jumped 9 percent, according to CareerBuilder.

But the fields in Philly where the younger cohort lost jobs – architecture and engineering, computer and mathematical, and life, physical and social sciences --point to a long-standing local issue known as the "brain drain."

"They come, they get educated and then they leave," Sweet said. "But Philadelphia is in a much better position to retain more of those graduates now than it was 10, 20 years ago."

The boomers, who put off retirement during the recession, will start to step down soon – which will help millennials, as well as Generation Xers move up the corporate hierarchy, Hunt said.

Sweet points to the city’s various tech start-ups and Comcast’s planned incubator space as reasons for millennials to stay.

A rebounding construction industry should also help local twenty-somethings gain jobs, Sweet added.

"You will start to see job growth shift from the low paying industries, like retail, to the high-paying industries – various parts of healthcare, business and professional services, information and technology, construction and manufacturing," Sweet said. "That will be enticing."
