Urban Exploration Project Comes to Philly

For the first time since launching its urban exploration project CityLove, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is recruiting the public to take part as they tour Philadelphia in mid-June.

"We really want people to focus on the photography and looking at these places with a new set of eyes," said Grant Stevens, the National Trust's manager of community outreach.

CityLove kicks off June 14 with a 10 a.m. private, guided excursion through the Reading Viaduct -- the future home of the Rail Park.

"What will make this tour a bit different is its focus on combining hisory, photography and social media to emphasize the power of place," said Leah Murphy, president of the Friends of the Rail Park.

Eastern State Penitentiary, the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Beth Sholom Synagogue and Philadelphia City Hall are a few of the other places on the CityLove schedule.

The National Trust is encouraging the shutterbugs who participate to post their shots from the week-long series of iconic Philly structure tours to Twitter and Instagram, part of its effort to captalize on the power of social media.

"Hashtag shots with CityLovePHL or SavingPlaces," Stevens said. "A lot of them will be repackaged at the National Trust and shared on our blog and through our newsletters."

The setup allows the organizations to share the historical places' unique qualities with the rest of the world, while drawing attention to efforts to preserve them, added Stevens, who referred to this iteration of CityLove as a test.

"A lot will depend on how many people turn out for this one," he said.

The nonprofit will assess the Philly programming before rolling out the "digital version" of CityLove to its next location, which will be announced sometime this fall, he said.

Friends of the Rail Park are hoping for a large turnout as the social media component could help draw more supporters to the group's efforts to bring a 3-mile linear park to the city.

"Social media is such a powerful tool for cultivating a community," Murphy said. "The 'viral' aspect of information sharing among social networks...has been and will continue to be a driver in spreading awareness."

Currently the Friends of the Rail Park are working to secure the $8.6 million alloted towards their cause in the state's capital budget, Murphy said.

However the organization is also waiting on the results of a study evaluating the feasibility of the bus rapid transit line SEPTA would like to install along the same corridor.

Regardless of the study's outcome, Murphy anticipates breaking ground on the first redevelopment phase, which will convert a small section of the Reading Viaduct known as the SEPTA spur, within the next year, Murphy said.

"What is happening with the Rail Park is a really good example of how passionate people are about a particular space," Stevens said. "We find that appealing at the National Trust too."

To get in on one of the Rail Park, or any other, tour, potential participants must follow @SavingPlaces on Twitter or Instagram and then tag previous photos showcasing the best of Philly on their own accounts with #CityLovePHL. Then complete an online registration before noon on June 8.

For complete directions and a list of the various site tours, visit their website.

The National Trust will inform those who register if they were selected by June 9.

Philly Bids for 2016 DNC Convention

Philadelphia has officially submitted a bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Mayor Michael Nutter announced Friday.

"We have submitted a very competitive sealed bid," Nutter said adding that hosting the convention could bring millions of dollars to the city.

The city, along with 14 other towns, was asked to submit a bid to host the multi-day political event by the Democratic National Committee back in March. The deadline to submit bids was Friday.

A group of city leaders, led by U.S. Congressman Bob Brady, also previously said they planned to put together a pitch for Philly. Former Gov. Ed Rendell is also chairing a nonprofit looking to raise $50 million to host the event at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia.

Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke sent a letter to the DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Friday shilling for the city. Clarke highlighted that the city regularly hosts large events like the Welcome America July 4 Celebration, the Made in America music festival and Philadelphia Marathon.

"As one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, we already have first-class hotels and public transportation offerings," he wrote. "There are plans to add more than 1,000 hotel rooms in Center City to accommodate our booming tourism and convention center business."

Last month, however, the city pulled out of the running to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. A move that did not sit well with all of City Council.

The city's announcement came hours after New York Mayor Bill De Blasio said the borough of Brooklyn had put in a bid to host the event.

Philadelphia has hosted six political conventions in its history, city officials said. The DNC last hosted its convention in Philadelphia in 1948 when they nominated President Harry Truman to run for The White House. The last political convention to be hosted in the city was the 2000 Republican National Convention.

"A trip back to the Cradle of Liberty by the Democratic National Committee is well overdue," Clarke said.

The DNC is expected to make a decision late this year or early 2015.

Caught on Video: Explosive Blows Apart Coke Machine

Philadelphia Police are searching for the person who blew up a soda machine outside a Mayfair plumbing business.

The device exploded around 10 p.m. on Thursday in front of a business along the 6600 block of Montague Street, Philadelphia Police said.

Police say surveillance video from the store captured a young man getting out of a car and placing an object into the Coke machine's dispensing bin. He then got back into the car and drove away. Minutes later the machine blew open.

The explosion was so extreme, police say, parts flew 100 feet away and windows from the business were blown out.

"It was a really loud, loud, obnoxious boom. And the flash of light," said neighbor Michelle Rodriguez.

Officials said the blast caused thousands of dollars in damage, but no one was hurt.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan said investigators believe the device was homemade. They're concerned the man may have bomb making knowledge and could strike again.

"This is not vandalism. This is the detonation of a dangerous explosive device," Sullivan said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Philadelphia Police at 215.686.TIPS.

Car Blocking Hydrant Has Windows Busted

If you needed a reason not to park in front of a fire hydrant, here's one: you might get your windows broken.

Firefighters in Wilmington, Del. responded to a blaze along the 800 block of Van Buren Street at 11:21 a.m. on Friday to find the street's fire hydrant blocked by a white Ford Fusion sedan.

With heavy fire spreading through the three-story house and to a home next door, the firefighters broke the car's two front windows and fed their fire hose through to get water flowing.

Parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant in Wilmington is illegal, according to the city's parking regulations.

Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control about 40 minutes later, officials said. No one was inside the homes at the time of the fire, but a dog was killed.

A firefighter also suffered heat exhaustion and was taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment, officials said. He was later released.

As for the car, officials said police issued a ticket and that it was set to be towed.

A kidnapping suspect led police on a wild chase across the George Washington Bridge Friday afternoon, crashing into Port Authority police cars on both sides of the span before being apprehended, authorities said.

Authorities in Pennsylvania say the suspect, Luis Figueroa, 33, of the Bronx and Hazelton, Pennsylvania, was on a three-state crime spree that ended in New York around noon when he crashed a stolen Cadillac Escalade.

Figueroa was heading east toward Manhattan when he first crashed into a Port Authority police car, sending that car slamming into the toll booth on the west side of the span. He crossed the bridge and struck another Port Authority vehicle, disabling his getaway car. He was arrested as he tried to flee on foot.

Police in Hazleton, Penn. said Figueroa was on a crime spree that started when he attempted to abduct one woman from a Hazleton home and then abducted another and fled, according to the NBC affiliate station WBRE.  Hazleton police said Figueroa stole a vehicle from a park ranger in the Poconos, during which time the woman he allegedly abducted escaped. He then drove to Paterson, NJ, where he stole the Escalade and lit a fire at a used car dealership, police said.

Two Port Authority police officers were treated for minor injuries at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck.  Three lanes of the bridge were closed following the accident and traffic problems on the bridge lingered through the evening rush.

Tracy Morgan in Intensive Care After NJ Turnpike Crash

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan is in intensive care following a six vehicle crash along the New Jersey Turnpike, state police say.

The 45-year-old former "Saturday Night Live" star was traveling north along the highway in a limo bus when it was hit by a tractor trailer and overturned around 1 a.m. Saturday morning, New Jersey State Police confirm. The crash happened near Exit 8A of the Turnpike in Cranbury, New Jersey. That's about 15 miles north of Trenton.

A preliminary state police investigation found that a Walmart tractor trailer came upon slow moving traffic and slammed into the limo. The truck driver did swerve to try and avoid crashing, but still hit the black Mercedes limo bus causing it to spin and flip over. The limo then crashed into several other vehicles. Six vehicles in all -- two tractor trailers, the limo bus, an SUV and two cars -- were involved.

The crash was so severe, part of the limo's rear driver side was ripped away.

The "30 Rock" actor was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is in intensive care.

Morgan's representative, Lewis Kay, tells NBC News the actor is expected to remain in critical condition for the time being.

"His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care. We don't anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available," Kay said.

James McNair, a 63-year-old of Peekskill, New York, was killed in the crash, according to state police. Three other men on the bus were also taken to the hospital where they're listed in critical condition. All of the injured were on the limo bus.

Christopher Thompson, owner of limo operator Atlantic Transportation Services, said the eight passenger limo bus had two drivers on board. One was behind the wheel and another in the front passenger seat.

Both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but were shaken up by the crash, Thompson said.

"Atlantic Transportation Services extends our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those injured in last night's accident. We also give our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of the one individual that passed," he said in a written statement. "This is a very difficult time and we appreciate all of the support and well wishes we have received thus far, and we ask that everyone pray for the recovery of those injured. Godspeed to all involved."

Morgan had a scheduled performance at Dover Downs Casino in Dover, Delaware, on Friday night. That's about 120 miles south of the crash point.

Stand-up comedian Ardie Fuqua posted a photo to Instagram around midnight showing Morgan in front of a crowd. His Facebook page said he was opening for Morgan.

"This is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1,500 people," the photo's caption read. "Then we traveled back to NYC in style in a luxury Mercedes Sprinter. Road life is a good life!"

It is unclear whether Fuqua was on the limo bus.

Thompson could not confirm the names of passengers besides Morgan, but said the bus was chartered by the casino.

PHOTO: The aftermath of the crash showing the overturned limo bus.

A New York City native, Morgan started as a cast member on "SNL" in 1996 and spent seven years on the show. He later had his own show, "The Tracy Morgan Show," which lasted for just a season. In 2006, he portrayed the role of Tracy Jordan in the hit NBC comedy "30 Rock," created by "SNL" co-star Tina Fey.

Morgan grew up fatherless, one of five siblings, in a blighted section of Brooklyn, where he helped raise and support the family.

He once called his gift for being funny "a defense mechanism" for his miserable circumstances. As a teen, he started doing comedy on the streets to supplement the family's welfare income.

In recent years, he has struggled with alcoholism and has been arrested on drunken driving charges. He had a successful kidney transplant in late 2010.

The Turnpike was closed for more than five hours as officials investigated the crash. The highway was reopened around 6:30 a.m.

State Police continue to investigate the crash as well as the National Transportation Safety Board. An NTSB spokesperson said the agency planned to send investigators to the crash scene Saturday evening or Sunday to focus on safety issues related to the trucks and limo.

NFL Star Takes NJ Student to Prom

Prom night was twice as special for a New Jersey high school senior who not only attended the special event with her boyfriend, but with a New York Giant.

Bayonne High School student Lauren Delbert invited the Super Bowl XLVI championship-winning punter Steve Weatherford to her prom on Twitter with the message, "Will you tackle prom with me?"

She never expected he would respond.

"He's my favorite Giant so I sent it to him and he answered yes, and it all went down from there," she said.

The NFL star arrived in style Friday to pick her up and instead of a corsage, gave her an autographed football and a hug.

"Just looking back at how exciting prom was for me, I know how exciting this is," said Weatherford.

The married father of three pulled out all the stops, trading in his team bus for a convertible and his football uniform for a designer tuxedo.

"This is Hugo Boss, and Versace shoes -- a little different than what I wore 13 years ago to my prom," he joked.

Weatherford and Delbert had even texted each other photos ahead of time to make sure they were color coordinated.

But the football star wasn't Delbert's only arm candy as they arrived on the red carpet. Delbert's boyfriend, Steven Schumann, wearing a Giants Super Bowl ring, also escorted her to the dance.

"It's exciting," he said. "I am happy to meet Steve, and glad he's taken time out of his day to hang with us."

Students and faculty say it was a sweet gesture on the part of Weatherford.

"The students are excited," said principal Rich Baccarello. "He is a national figure, at least around here, and he gives to his fans."

And for one particular fan, it was a night she'll never forget.

"It was amazing," said Delbert.

Weatherford has another prom Saturday night in Atlantic City, part of his Project Prom initiative in which he pays for the prom expenses of 10 couples affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The big rig driver who triggered a six-vehicle crash that killed one man and left Tracy Morgan and two others critically injured is expected to appear in court Monday to face charges, officials said.

Middlesex County prosecutors charged 35-year-old Kevin Roper of Jonesboro, Georgia with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto after the early morning Saturday accident, according to the Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and New Jersey State Police Superintendant Col. Joseph Fuentes.

Roper, accompanied by his attorney, turned himself in on Saturday to state police and was transported to the Middlesex County Jail, according to New Jersey State Police. He was released on $50,000 bail Saturday night, Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said Sunday.

He is expected to appear in a New Jersey courtroom Monday, according to prosecutors.

The National Transportation Safety Board investigators on Sunday were working with state police to look at any issues in the crash related to commercial trucking and limousine safety, according to The Associated Press.

Roper was driving a Walmart tractor-trailer northbound on the New Jersey Turnpike near Exit 7A in Cranbury, N.J. -- about 15 miles north of Trenton -- around 1 a.m. Saturday when he failed to notice slow moving traffic and slammed into a limo bus, which had Morgan, stand-up comedians Ardie Fuqua Jr., Harris Stanton and 62-year-old James McNair, and three others on board, according to officials.

The limo bus, a Mercedes Sprinter, began rotating clockwise, then overturned on its left side and crashed into several other vehicles, according to New Jersey State Police.

"The driver of the tractor-trailer ...failed to observe the slow moving traffic ahead of him," said New Jersey State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams. "The driver did observe the traffic, but it was too late. It was just prior to impact, he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the collision. But he was unable to."

McNair, of Peekskill, New York, was killed in the crash, according to police.

Morgan, 45, and 36-year-old Jeffrey Millea, of Shelton, Conn., were airlifted to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition, according to officials.

Fuqua is also in critical condition, while Stanton was treated and released, according to reports.

Forty-four-year-old Tyrone Gail and another unidentified limo driver suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to limo operator Atlantic Transportation Services.
