Smallest Working Dog in the World Packs a Big Punch

The tiniest working dog in the world hails from South Jersey. She's so tiny she fits in the palm of a baseball glove.

At just 2.5 pounds and 5.7 inches tall, a micro Yorkshire Terrier named Lucy packs a big punch. She was taken in by chance by her dogmom and Absecon native Sally Montufar 5 years ago.

"I’m pushing 60-years-old and I’ve never lived without a dog. I come from a family of dog lovers. I mostly had big dogs, labs. I just happened to be standing at the right place at the right time. She went from homeless to a world record," said Montufar, an adjunct professor at Rowan University.

In 2011, the Guinness Book of World Records certified Lucy as the smallest working dog. She stole the title away from a 6-pound search and rescue dog in Japan.

Lucy's 7,000 Facebook fans keep up with her activities by reading about her adventures on the LUCY Smallest Working Dog Facebook page. Last week, she posed in a sailor suit during a rainstorm.

She sticks her tongue out all the time due to a breed defect. Montafur prefers to call her tongue a 'feature' because it sends a good message to the students she meets and people she greets.

"No one is perfect. Her tongue doesn't take anything from her," said Montafur.

Lucy visits hospice patients and school children. Her show consists of dog tricks, agility, lap hugs and a message of acceptance. Montafur's car has turned into a traveling circus car as the storage area for the props and agility course.

"She just is amazing. You see these elderly frail people and their eyes just light up when they see her," said Robyn Van Dusen of Caring Hospice of Philadelphia.

Montafur took Lucy in on a whim when she was visiting Paw Dazzle in Smithville. A woman walked in with the scrawny pup. The chance meeting turned into a new journey for Lucy and Sally.

Lucy's weight has doubled and after a year of training she became a working dog. Like most pooches, Lucy likes to play outside, to do tricks and anything for food.

Lucy's upcoming appearances include two shows for hospice patients at the Simpson House and Hayes Manor in Philadelphia on May 22 and at the Phillies' Bark in the Park on May 24. Montafur hopes Lucy's story will inspire others to adopt a pet.

"She's not a fearful dog even though she's so tiny. She's so affectionate," Montafur said.

A pickup truck driver made a lucky escape after his vehicle crashed into the side of a New Jersey bridge, leaving it dangling precariously above the Hackensack River.

Police say the driver was towing a jeep on Route 46 in Little Ferry on Saturday afternoon when his brakes suddenly locked. The truck lost control and struck two cars, then crashed through the side wall of a bridge. Scaffolding from a billboard stopped the truck from plummeting.

The driver was able to climb out onto the billboard until crews pulled him to safety. He only suffered minor injuries.

A pedestrian died after being struck by a car early this morning along a quiet South Jersey street and investigators believe he was intentionally run down.

The four-door sedan struck Eddie Lee Warthen along the 100 block of E Madison Street near North Commerce Street in Paulsboro, N.J. around 4:30 a.m., according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors investigated the incident as a homicide after Warthen, who was 30 years old, died about three hours later at Cooper University Hospital.

After the crash, two people fled the scene in the silver or gray sedan, according to investigators.

A bizarre series of events left a man dead and his friend hurt along a busy southeast Pennsylvania interstate overnight.

It all began when Daniel Raymond's Suzuki became disabled on the left shoulder of northbound Interstate-95 just before Exit 49 in Lower Makefield, Bucks County just after midnight.

Raymond's passenger Benjamin Melendez then called a friend to come and help them. That friend, Maria Nyars arrived a short time later and pulled over on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Melendez, 30 of Trenton, N.J., began to cross the road to meet his friend when he was struck by the mirror of a passing Lexus. The force of the crash left Melendez sitting upright in the right-hand lane, according to investigators.

Seeing his friend in the roadway, Raymond, 36 of Levittown, Pa., darted into traffic to try and drag Melendez to safety.

A passing Hyundai Santa Fe then struck both Melendez and Raymond.

The force of the crashes killed Melendez and landed Raymond in St. Mary Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.

The drivers of both cars stayed on the scene of the accident and were not intoxicated, according to police.

State Police said they would investigate if alcohol use played any role in the victims' actions.

The full cause of the crash remained under investigation Sunday.

Police didn't immediately charge anyone.

Funeral Donations Needed for Teens Killed in Crash

Loved ones of three South Jersey teens who were killed during a Memorial Day accident involving a car and a bus are now seeking the public's help for funeral costs.

Tevin Campbell, 18, of Absecon, Kira Strider, 14, of Pleasantville and Amber Fernandez, 16, of Pleasantville, all died on Monday after a car collided with an NJ Transit bus in Pleasantville, NJ.

Investigators say 18-year-old Melissa Rodriguez of Pleasantville was driving on Monday, around 1:50 p.m. northbound on Franklin Boulevard. Six passengers, including Fernandez, Campbell and Strider, were inside the vehicle at the time.

As she was driving, police say an NJ Transit bus, driven by 69-year-old Carmen Mazzagatti Jr. of Galloway Township, was also traveling on Franklin Boulevard near the intersection of Old Turnpike Road.

According to investigators, Rodriguez suddenly crossed the center line and struck the bus head-on.

Campbell and Strider were pronounced dead at the scene. Fernandez was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

"We will miss her," said Linda Gonzalez, Fernandez's aunt, during an interview with NBC40. "But like we said, she's in a better place and God took her because there's a reason for it. She was just a beautiful person inside and out. She was always happy."

Pleasantville city officials told NBC40 that the families of the victims are struggling financially, making it difficult for them to pay for the funeral services.

"The two girls were very close," said Pleasantville Police Chief Jose Ruiz. "They were always together and it was the family's idea to keep them together. Their services are going to be together and there was information that they wanted to be buried together - and with that comes an added expense. So that's what we're trying to do."

Officials hope to raise $5,000 to help the families cover the funeral costs and are asking for the public's help.

"We're  trying to reach as many people as possible in a short period of time…I'm speaking from my heart," Chief Ruiz said. "Please, this is not the way it's supposed to be. You know, we're not supposed to bury our kids."

Donations may be made to the Kira Strider Fund c/o Ocean City Home Bank, 1777 New Road, Linwood, NJ 08221. A viewing will also be held for Tevin Campbell at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Pleasantville.

Local Catholics Brace for More Parish Closings

Catholics across the Delaware Valley are finding out this weekend whether the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will close their parish. Bad news is expected for parishioners of nearly 50 local churches.

In September, the Archdiocese informed the public that 46 churches in Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery counties would undertake a program of self-study, known as the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Initiative, to determine if any of the parishes should merge together. There are currently 236 churches in the Archdiocese.

Some priests say they've already learned the fate of their church.

A priest at Saint Rose of Lima Church in Delaware County told NBC10 he found out early Friday afternoon that his church will remain open.

Priests in the Archdiocese also tell NBC10 that Notre Dame de Lourdes in Swarthmore, Pa. is expected to merge with Our Lady of Peace in Milmont Park while St. Margaret Mary in Essington is expected to merge with St. Gabriel in Norwood.

The Philadelphia Inquirer also reports that St. Ann Parish in Bristol, Bucks County, will be absorbed by neighboring St. Mark.

The looming announcements are triggering raw emotions in many local Catholics, including Libby Tosti who has attended mass at Saint Ann's in Bristol since she was a baby.

"I was baptized in this church, I made all my sacraments in this church, I was married in this church and I wanted to be buried in this church," said Tosti while choking back tears. "And if they close this church it's not going to happen."

The evaluation, which could affect Our Lady of Fatima in Bensalem, Saint Monica and Saint Thomas Aquinas in Philadelphia, Saint Matthew in Conshohocken, and Saint Eugene in Primos among others, includes a review of each parish's demographics, finances and spiritual activity.

A group of lay persons, priests and Archdiocesan personnel make up a strategic planning committee that is completing the assessments.

The committee presents Archbishop Charles Chaput with three possible recommendations -- to merge, to complete additional evaluations in the future or maintain their current structure and develop a plan for long-term sustainability.

Most pastors in the area have been withholding the news about their parish until they can make an official announcement during mass.

Officials say a bear repellent spray led to the evacuation of a post office in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday.

According to investigators, workers at a post office on the 1900 block of Byberry Road found the spray around 11:40 a.m. after someone tried to mail it.

When the workers tried to throw the repellent out, it began to leak -- spreading fumes throughout the building.

The post office was evacuated after 16 people began to feel sick and nauseous.

Police officers and the fire department arrived at the post office and were able to clear the scene. Medics also treated everyone who fell sick. None of them were taken to the hospital.

Bear spray is considered a hazardous good and is therefore not allowed to be mailed. Investigators have not yet revealed the identity of the person who tried to mail the repellent.
