A van got wedged under a FedEx truck, leaving at least seven people injured and shutting shown part of Route 309, during a crash in Horsham Township Saturday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of Route 309 and Welsh Road, Montgomery County Dispatch said. Multiple law enforcement and rescue personnel responded, shutting portions of both northbound and southbound Route 309.

Surveillance video from a nearby gas station shows the van slamming into the side of the truck shortly after 6 a.m. Police say the FedEx truck had broken down, but officers were already at the scene diverting traffic with their lights on when the crash happened.

"The noise was just - it was scary," said Ahjay Johnson, a gas station employee who was out during her break when the van careened into the truck.

One person had to be airlifted to Jefferson Hospital, Montgomery County dispatch said. Authorities could not immediately provide the conditions of the other victims.

Northbound Route 309 will remain shut down at the Route 63 off ramp through at least 11 a.m. as authorities investigate and clear up the debris from the crash. Southbound Route 309 will also remain closed from Hartman Road.

New Jersey Mother Charged With Killing 23-Month-Old Son

A New Jersey mother is charged with killing her 23-month-old son after initially telling police that he had been abducted, prosecutors said Saturday.

Nakira Griner, 24, was arrested Saturday morning after her child's body was found in the yard of the woman's Bridgeton home, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office announced. Just hours earlier, shortly after 6:30 p.m. Friday, she had called the Bridgeton City Police Department to say the boy had been abducted.

After receiving word of the missing child, authorities set out on a manhunt to find the boy, even using New Jersey Park Police bloodhounds in their efforts, prosecutors said. But by around 3 a.m Saturday, the child's body was found in his mother's yard.

In addition to first-degree murder, Nakira Griner faces second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second degree desecration of human remains and fourth degree tampering with evidence charges.

It is unclear if she has retained an attorney. She is being held at the Cumberland County Jail as she awaits a detention hearing.

2-Round Mix of Wintry Weather Could Cause Commuter Troubles

0
0

The Philadelphia region is bracing for a one-two punch of wintry weather that could cause commuter headaches at the start of the workweek.

This is not expected to be a blockbuster storm, but we will be seeing intermittent periods of snow, rain and ice during the usual commute hours. A First Alert goes into effect starting 6 p.m. Sunday as the first round of light snow starts moving into the region.

Here's what to watch for:

Round 1

The first round of this storm system will bring light snow to Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley starting late Sunday night. Areas further south, however, could get a mix of rain and snow with a few brief periods of icing.

By Monday morning, the snow could start moving out of the northernmost areas, but there will still be light snow falling along the I-95 Corridor, meaning you might want to give yourself some extra time to head out the door for what could be a slower-than-usual commute.

The snow will once again pull out, making for a pretty dry afternoon, barring some lingering rain further south. The commute home, however, could be a little slower again as snow starts to creep back in around 6 p.m. and fall steadily through the overnight hours.

Round 2

Steady snow will continue into Tuesday morning, when some icing could be in play along the I-95 Corridor and make for dicey driving conditions.

That icing threat is greatest in the Lehigh Valley late Tuesday morning through the early afternoon. For the rest of the region, the ice will turn into rain by mid-morning, and that rain will remain heavy during the afternoon through the evening.

Matriarch's Home of 62-Years Demolished After Collapse

The children and grandchildren of a Philadelphia matriarch watched as her Fishtown home of more than six decades came crashing to the ground Sunday.

NBC10 was there as workers demolished Clovea Klenk’s home on 635 East Thompson Street after it was deemed dangerous and condemned by L&I due to a partial collapse.

Clovea Klenk, 94, and her caretaker were inside her home Friday afternoon when they heard a loud bang.

“They thought it was an earthquake at first,” Clovea’s son Jim Klenk told NBC10. “The ground just shook. My brother actually had to kick in the front door to get my 94-year-old mother out of the house.”

They soon discovered the floor of their home had dropped at least a foot. The family said contractors were doing work at the home next door and were digging under the foundation when the partial collapse occurred. L&I officials responded to the home which was later condemned.

The family showed NBC10 photos of the collapsed retaining wall. City workers closed access to the two homes.

“It’s something material,” Jim Klenk said. “Thank God my mother wasn’t killed. Thank God my brother and sister weren’t killed.”

Jim Klenk told NBC10 his mother bought the home in the 1950s. She and two of her children who lived with her are now staying at a hotel.

"Right now, she’s confused and scared,” he said.

Sunday morning, the Klenk family salvaged as many pictures and belongings as they could before construction workers demolished the home.

“I spent probably more time in that house than I did in my own,” Clovea’s granddaughter, Katie Klenk, said. “That’s the kind of house it was. Sunday night dinner. Stay from 3 to 7 p.m. playing games, fighting with your family.”

The family plans to build a new home in the same area.

“It’s not like we’re going to move,” Katie Klenk said. “This is Fishtown. This is our neighborhood. This is our house.”

L&I officials continue to investigate the cause of the initial collapse.
