A mysterious loud noise shook some people in Philadelphia from their sleep early Tuesday.

The boom rattled some South Philadelphia homes around 2 a.m. People turned to social media to ask their neighbors if they heard it too. Other people called police to report the sound. Some people described it as sounding like an explosion.

“This was just really loud, it was just so deep, it couldn’t have been normal,” Ren Pags, who heard the sound in the area of 12th and Oregon streets, said. “It was almost like the fireworks, the real big ones that sparkle at the end, the real deep boom.”

Some people reported hearing the noise as far away as New Jersey and Kensington.

NBC10 reached out to police and firefighters but got no answers about what caused the sound. There were no reports of any blast. The U.S. Geological Survey had no reports of an earthquake in the area as of Tuesday morning.

Did you hear it?

NBC10 will continue to seek answers as to what caused the strange sound.

Alexandra Reiner, 30, of Eastampton, New Jersey, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Reiner teaches special education at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. Philly Union Leader Johnny Doc to Face Charges, Source Says

Federal officials will announce charges Wednesday against powerful union leader John J. “Johnny Doc” Dougherty and Philadelphia City Councilman Bobby Henon, a source confirmed to NBC10.

The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported the story Tuesday.

The charges come more than two years after the FBI and IRS raided more than a dozen offices of people connected to IBEW Local 98, including Dougherty.

George Peltz, a South Jersey contractor and an ally of Dougherty's, pleaded guilty Monday in connection to the federal probe. Peltz admitted to providing more than $60,000 in gifts, including home and office improvements, to an unnamed union official.

On Tuesday, Dr. James Moylan, the former Zoning Board Chairman of Philadelphia, was also indicted in connection to the investigation. Prosecutors say he used more than $40,000 in union donations to pay his business and personal expenses. He stepped down as zoning board chair after federal agents raided his home and chiropractic business.

Dougherty, 58, has long been one of Philadelphia’s most powerful political figures, despite never holding public office.

Dougherty is head of the broader Philadelphia Building Trades Council, and has sat on influential boards like the Delaware River Port Authority. Many inside Philadelphia City Hall consider him to be most influential at the city council level, where he has had a hand in getting several current members, including former Local 98 protege Henon, elected.

A spokesman for IBEW Local 98 did not respond to a request for comment.

Henon's office told the Philadelphia Inquirer in a statement he does not plan on resigning from his elected office.

“He is confident that his colleagues will respect any possible upcoming legal process and support him,” the statement read. “Councilman Henon is a dedicated public servant and will continue to serve as councilman."

Both Dougherty and Henon have denied any wrongdoing.

More than 36,420 pounds of chicken nugget products are being recalled because they may be contaminated with rubber, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Tuesday.

The recall is for certain 5-pound packages of Tyson White Meat Panko Chicken Nuggets sold nationwide.

There have been no confirmed reports of anyone getting sick or having adverse reactions because they consumed the chicken, the USDA said.

The packages had a "best if used by" date of Nov. 26, 2019, case code "3308SDL03 and time stamps 23:00 through 01:59. Click here to see the label.

The manufacturer received complaints from people who found "extraneous material" in the chicken nugget packages, the USDA said in a news release, adding that anyone who has purchased affected packages should throw them away or return them to the store.

The USDA did not immediately disclose which retail outlets sold the recalled chicken.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Tyson Consumer Relations at 1-888-747-7611.

Man Accused of Groping 4 Girls, Woman in Center City

Police are on the hunt for a man accused of going on a groping spree involving three teenage girls, a preteen and a 30-year-old woman within the span of less than two hours in Center City.

The incidents occurred Tuesday morning and began when the suspect grabbed the hand of a 16-year-old girl waiting on a train platform of the SEPTA Walnut-Locust station, the Philadelphia Police Department said in a news release. The youngest of the victims is 12 years old, the PPD said.

In the first case, the man tried to force his 16-year-old victim to inappropriately touch him, and when she pulled away he groped her before she was able to escape. That incident happened around 6:45 a.m. Just 15 minutes later, police say the man brushed up against a 30-year-old woman at the Suburban Station concourse.

[[505088722, C]]

He then made his way to the 1600 block of Arch Street, where he started talking to a 12-year-old girl and blocked her path, the PPD said. She managed to run and as she escaped the man yelled for her to pull her pants down, according to the department.

Half an hour later, the PPD said, the suspect once again turned his sights to a teenage girl, this time a 15-year-old standing at the intersection of 16th and Vine streets. He groped her and then walked away.

Around 8:33 a.m., the suspect groped another 16-year-old girl as she stood at the intersection of Broad and Fairmount streets, the PPD said. He was last seen running away north on Broad Street and then west on Brown Street.

The suspect is described as an approximately 50-year-old black male standing around 6 feet tall. He has a thin build, walks with a limp, has a lazy eye and was seen wearing a long green coat and black pants, the PPD said.

Authorities believe the man may be homeless and say they are checking city homeless advocacy programs for leads. The PPD is increasing patrols around Center City train stops and schools while they look for the suspect.

Anyone who sees the man is asked to immediately call 911. People can also submit a tip by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477) or texting 773847.

The latest series of assaults follow four groping cases reported near the University of Pennsylvania over the weekend. In those cases, the four women were groped within a four-hour window.

Snow Squall Leads to 'Mass Casualty' Crash Along Pa. Highway

A 27-vehicle crash involving trucks and cars during a whiteout from a snow squall injured 24 people and snarled traffic on a busy eastern Pennsylvania highway Wednesday afternoon.

The crash blocked all lanes of U.S. Route 222 southbound in Wyomissing, Berks County, between the U.S. Route 422 westbound and Lebanon/Penn Ave-West Exit and Pennsylvania Route 724 - Sinking Spring/Shillington Exit around 1:25 p.m.

A Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident was declared meaning up to 25 people may have been hurt, Berks County dispatchers said.

Ultimately, police determined a total of 24 people reported injuries. Of the victims, 15 were evaluated at the scene, nine were taken to Reading Hospital and eight were taken to the Spring Township fire station on Monroe Avenue in West Lawn where they reunited with their family members.

Of the nine people who were hospitalized, two of them were critically injured.

A snow squall caused whiteout conditions at the time of the crash, PennDOT spokesman Ron Young said. Snow could be seen on the roadway after the wreck.

The snow squall that caused the crash comes on the heels of record-setting cold weather across America's Midwest, which sent parts of the country into sub-zero temperatures colder than Antarctica.

Video posted to the Reading Eagle's Facebook page showed at least two vehicles off the road and a jackknifed tractor-trailer at the front of what appeared to be a chain reaction with the big rig in the front.

[[505091411, C]]

Officials say 27 vehicles, including two big rigs, a dump truck and large box truck were involved.

If you have any information on the crash, please call Wyomissing Police at 610-375-6102.

State Police also responded Wednesday afternoon to another multi-vehicle accident on I-78 in Windsor Township, Berks County. Officials have not yet revealed how many vehicles were involved or if it was weather-related. All traffic in the area of the crash is being diverted at Exit 35.
