Fruit Sold in Walmart, Aldi Recalled Over Bacteria Fears

0
0

Thousands of cartons of fruit sold in stores like Walmart and Aldi across 18 U.S. states have been recalled over concerns about bacterial contamination that could cause potentially deadly infections.

Jac. Vandenberg, Inc., recalled 1,727 cartons of fresh peaches, 1,207 cartons of fresh nectarines and 365 cartons of fresh plums because they could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can develop into listeriosis, which can be deadly for young children or people with vulnerable immune systems.

Federal officials say the affected products were shipped to major supermarket chains like Walmart and Aldi and some smaller retailers in Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia. Click here to see identifying packaging information.

NBC has reached out to the company to learn what stores in Illinois were affected.

No illnesses have been reported to date because of the issue, which was detected during routine sampling, officials said. Anyone who may have purchased the affected fruit is advised to return it for a full refund. Anyone with questions can contact the company at compliance@jacvandenberg.com

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

Healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Snow, Bitter Cold Blast Head Our Way

0
0

A winter storm system is bringing heavy rain and some snow on Tuesday. But the worst weather will likely be bitter cold temperatures and wind chills below zero that will be ushered in after the storm moves out.

Here is what we know at this point:

Monday is the nicest day of the week with temps in the 30s and clear skies. Conditions change Tuesday.

Snow begins to fall Tuesday morning in the Poconos, Berks County and the Lehigh Valley. For areas around Philadelphia, rain will fall. That precipitation will continue throughout the day. Little to no rain could fall along the coast during the day.

By the evening rush, however, temperatures will start to fall and the rain is expected to turn to snow.

A few inches of accumulation is possible in the Lehigh Valley and Berks County areas. In and around Philadelphia, there could be around an inch.

Once the snow moves out Tuesday night, cold air starts to take hold. Winds will pick up on Wednesday sending the feels-like temperature plummeting to below zero.

Thursday will be the coldest part of the Arctic blast. On Thursday morning, low temperatures (without the wind chill) will be in the single digits and below zero in some neighborhoods. Feels-like temps could be 10 below in Philly and 20 below in the Lehigh Valley. High temps Thursday won’t get out of the teens.

Bitter cold continues through Friday with highs only getting into the low 20s.

Relief comes over the weekend with temps expected into the 40s by Sunday.

Man Nearly Struck by Arrow While Walking Dog

An investigation is underway after a man was nearly struck by an arrow while walking his dog in the Lehigh Valley over the weekend.

The man was walking with his dog near the Spring Ridge Apartments in Whitehall Township Friday night when a white sedan pulled up next to them. A person inside the vehicle then fired an arrow, nearly striking them. The vehicle then drove off.

“That’s not just an arrow,” Casey Durant, the man’s girlfriend, told NBC10. “It’s a hunting arrow. It’s meant to take things down.”

A sporting goods salesman who saw photos of the arrow said the metal tip on it is known as a broadhead, used for hunting deer, turkeys or bears. The salesman also said the arrow was likely shot with a crossbow.

“He told us it was 15 yards,” Durant said. “He’s lucky he’s an awful shot.”

Durant said she’s unsure if the person who fired the arrow was aiming at her boyfriend or their dog.

“Is it a targeted dog thing?” she asked. “Did they know my routine? Was it supposed to be for me? My dog? My boyfriend.”

Whitehall Township Police confiscated the arrow and are currently investigating.

A woman is recovering after she was shot in the head while sitting inside an SUV with two of her friends in Southwest Philadelphia over the weekend.

The 30-year-old victim and her friends were inside the vehicle near a club on 52nd Street and Woodland Avenue Sunday at 4:40 a.m. The three women then noticed an unidentified man leaning on the back of the SUV, smoking a cigarette and using his phone.

“So my sister pulled the window down and said, ‘Hey, we’re about to pull off. Can you move?’ He didn’t respond,” the victim’s friend, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10. “So I got out of the car and said, ‘Hey, we’re about to pull off.’ He said, ‘Okay.’”

The victim’s friend said the man then approached the passenger side door and opened fire.

“Next thing I know, I see an arm come up. Three shots in the window,” she said.

Three bullets burst through the window and the victim was shot in the head once. The gunman fled the scene and the victim was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in stable condition.

“It’s just too many guns,” the victim’s friend said. “People don’t care no more.”

Police are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.

5 Alternatives to Watching Super Bowl LIII

0
0

It's game time! Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams will face off against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. This marks the Patriots' ninth appearance in the NFL Championship game in 17 years.

As every Philadelphia fan knows and dwells upon often, last year the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the five-time NFL champions for the Birds' first Super Bowl win in franchise history.

But, then came the reality of the 2018 season, despite a late rally that took the Eagles to the NFC Divisional Playoffs earlier this month.

[[504299712,L]]

So it's understandable that many local football fans are considering boycotting the game altogether, joining those who never planned on watching anyway.

Here are a few things to consider doing in lieu of watching Super Bowl LIII:

1. Philadelphia Auto Show

The annual Auto Show is on the road back to Philadelphia. The latest automotive technology will be on display at the Pennsylvania Convention Center from Feb. 2 through 10.

[[504972032,L]]

Visitors will be able to observe and sit inside the vehicles, while some models may even be available to test drive.

2. Boatbuilding 101

The Eagles' chances of a Super Bowl repeat may have sunken, but the opportunity for a great weekend remains afloat. The Philadelphia area's finest crafting experts will be holding special courses on mold making, stem carving, and other woodworking techniques that are essential to building boats. Classes set sail on February 2 and dock on February 10.

3. Philadelphia Museum of Art - New Chinese Galleries

Explore over 4,000 years of art as the Art Museum opens doors on its updated Chinese art galleries. The reimagined exhibit will analyze the thematic and historical significance of Chinese artifacts, including costumes, photographs, and figurines. The new Chinese art galleries open Feb. 3.

4. First Fridays in Old City

First Fridays in Old City have been a staple of the Philadelphia community since their inception in 1991. Tailored for both locals and tourists, First Fridays draw engaged crowds of all ages. Festivities include antique collecting, food vendors, art, and live music. First Friday events occur during the first Friday of each month.

5. Re-watch Super Bowl LII

There's no better way to celebrate the first anniversary of the greatest Super Bowl in NFL history than watching that game instead of whatever is going to happen on Sunday. Why not spend the day reliving the magic of the Philly Special, the winning game call, and the crowning of Super Bowl LII MVP, Nick Foles?

If you aren't lucky enough to have the game saved on your DVR, don't fret: The NFL has made a DVD version of the game available for purchase.

Murder Charges Filed in Case of NYC Dad Missing for a Month

0
0

A man is facing murder and other charges in connection to a case of a missing Staten Island father.

Angelo Nesimi was charged Monday with murder in the second degree, manslaughter and other charges related to the alleged death and cover-up of his friend Michael Stewart.

Prosecutors said Stewart had been stabbed to death, and believe the cover-up was extensive.

During the court hearing, a co-defendant, William Formica, the landlord of the building Nesimi lived in, was presented. He’s accused in the cover-up.

Both Nesimi and Formica pleaded not guilty.

Stephanie Garcia, the mother of Stewart's 4-year-old daughter, said in court that their daughter cries for her father every day.

"He was a good father. Good person. I don't know what happened," she said.

Nesimi was held without bail, while the landlord can be released on $75,000 bail.

Attorneys say they haven't seen any evidence against the men and characterize the accusations as being part of a "jilted lover" scenario, saying Nesimi's ex-girlfriend was angry at him.

Nesimi's attorney, Mario Gallucci, foretold News 4 New York early Monday that he assumed his client would be charged with murder.

Formica's attorney, Matthew Santamauro, said his client "has no knowledge that anything even occurred in that apartment, if anything happened in that apartment."

Stewart, a 40-year-old father of two, was last seen on Dec. 20 and he sent a text message to his mother on Dec. 21, writing, "Please help me Mom," the New York Post reported

Stewart was seen on surveillance video Dec. 20 horsing around with Nesimi inside a barbershop in Port Richmond. Nesimi was then arrested Dec. 31 in connection to a violent attack on his girlfriend, Zammara Sanchez, police told the Post. The couple was previously questioned in the suspected killing of Stewart, and Sanchez told detectives that her boyfriend "killed somebody -- and he made me go with him to get rid of the body in New Jersey," the Post reported, citing sources.

Investigators believe it's possible that Stewart's body was dumped in New Jersey, and that sanitation workers may have picked it up with the trash and it was incinerated, the Advance reported, citing a source. Another source said surveillance video shows Nesimi and Sanchez tossing what could be a body into a trash bin in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, before driving away in a Chrysler sedan.

Sources also told the Post that Stewart had a relationship with the couple: "It was a relationship between the three of them that ended with [Stewart] stabbed up," a police source told the Post.

Nesimi told the Daily News in a jailhouse interview this month, "I didn't do it, 100 percent. They're trying to pin it on me."

Both Stewart and Nesimi have criminal records. Nesimi claimed he knew Stewart only for the past few years and that they kept up with each other because they went to the same barbershop, but said they weren't close.

Stewart's body hasn't been found.
