9-Year-Old Girl Climbs Wall to Save Grandmother’s Life

A 9-year-old girl is being called a hero after she saved her grandmother’s life.

Cayla Davis’ mom dropped her off at her grandmother’s home in Chester, Pennsylvania, Monday, just like she normally does every day. When her grandmother didn’t come to the door, Cayla called her name but received no answer.

Knowing something was wrong, Cayla ran around the house and checked every window but all of them were locked. The girl then remembered there was one window at the home her grandmother never replaced because it was never used or opened. The girl then climbed up and reached the small transom window and climbed through it to get inside, cutting her lip in the process.

As the home security alarm went off, Cayla ran upstairs and found her grandmother unconscious on the floor. She then called her mom and told her to come back to the home.

Police officers arrived at the house, responding to the alarm. Knowing she needed a way for police to get inside, Cayla found her grandmother’s keys and threw them out of the window she came in through. Police were able to get inside and Cayla’s grandmother was taken to the hospital where she is being treated for a ruptured brain aneurysm.

“If Cayla hadn’t found her she certainly would have passed away,” Cynthia Bernard, the victim’s sister, told NBC10.

The day before the incident, Cayla climbed a rock wall during a trip with the local Andrew Hicks Foundation. She told NBC10 that moment gave her the confidence to scale the wall of the house and save her grandmother’s life. If she didn’t act so quickly, Cayla’s mom believes the family would likely be planning for a funeral. Now Cayla hopes other young kids can learn something from her heroics.

“I say keep following your dreams,” she said. “And then if you try to do it, anything is possible.”

Police are investigating several robberies near the University of Pennsylvania in which armed suspects stole iPhones from college students.

The robberies took place in West Philadelphia between January 4 and January 13. All of the incidents occurred between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. between 46th and 50th streets and between Ludlow and Walnut streets.

“I know sorority rush and stuff is going on right now so there’s definitely a lot of people out late and targets,” Elizabeth Menne, a student, told NBC10.

During each robbery, one or two suspects armed with a black handgun approached the victim and demanded both money and their iPhone. The suspects also told the victims to disable their iPhone password and the “Find My iPhone” tracking feature, police said.

“I’ve been living down here for a couple years now and it seems like every other week you’re getting an alert about a robbery or someone is on the loose and the cops are looking for somebody,” Dominick Policare, a student, said.

The suspects are described as two thin dark-skinned black males in their late teens to early 20s with short hair. They both stand between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11, police said. They were also both wearing dark clothing, according to investigators.

Police continue to search for the suspects. They advise anyone who’s approached by them to comply with their demands. Experts also say you can install extra third party tracking apps to your phone.

If you have any information on the incidents or were a victim of a robbery, please call Penn Police at 215-573-3333.

4 Elwyn Supervisors Charged in $920K Kick-Back Scheme

Four town supervisors in Elwyn, Pennsylvania, were arrested and charged for allegedly operating a kick-back scheme involving the manipulation of a time-keeping system and stealing nearly $1 million.

Tyloneous Wilson, 40, Karriemah Williams, 34, Lakiea Gay, 36, and Terrance Chatman, 28, all face felony theft charges.

On May 30, 2017, Pennsylvania State Police were notified of an internal investigation of Elwyn’s time-keeping system in Middletown Township.

Accountants noticed an excessive amount of overtime being paid to several employees at several housing sites throughout Delaware County.

Investigators determined that four supervisors were manipulating the time keeping system and fraudulently adding extra hours and shifts to their respective employee’s time sheets. Employees in Elwyn are required to clock in upon arrival at work and clock out after. Investigators say the extra hours didn’t correlate with the clocking in and out times.

Investigators also determined Wilson, Williams, Gay and Chatman made special arrangements in which they would edit the subordinates’ time sheets and input extra overtime. The suspects didn’t require the subordinate to work the extra hours and the subordinates would either pay them with a portion of the proceeds or performed extra job-related favors in return, investigators said.

The suspects managed more than 37 employees at ten different offsite locations throughout Delaware County, according to officials. They allegedly stole $920,004 from Elwyn as part of the scheme.

"Instead of helping others, as is the very mission of their employer, Elwyn, these individuals took advantage of their position of authority, orchestrating an elaborate kick-back scheme for their own selfish gain and profit," District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland said. "I commend Elwyn investigators, and PSP Trooper Francis Pawlowski and Trooper John Eissler for their diligent work on this case.”

In addition to the four supervisors, 37 employees at the different offsite locations were also arrested.

Closing Arguments Begin in Temple University Murder Trial

$

It was two-man job, defense attorney David Nenner said during his closing arguments Thursday morning in the murder trial of slain Temple University student Jenna Burleigh, who was killed during her first week of classes in 2017.

Nenner told the jury that his defendant’s roommate, Jack Miley, is the real killer. It was a familiar refrain for Nenner, who opened the trial last week with similar allegations against Miley.

”Jack Miley lied,” Nenner said Thursday during more than 1.5 hours of comments to the jury.

Those lies included telling investigators that he was passed out in the early hours of Aug. 31, 2017 when Josh Hupperterz returned to their apartment with Burleigh, Nenner said. But phone records suggest Miley and Hupperterz actually communicated several times before she was killed, suggesting that he was awake.

Miley strangled Burleigh to keep her from screaming, Nenner said. And at some point, the two men decided “to cover it up.”

Hupperterz is accused of killing Burleigh in the early hours of Aug. 31, 2017 at a North Philadelphia apartment he shared with roommate Jack Miley. Hupperterz then tried to hide her body at his grandparents’ rural property in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, according to investigators.

He pleaded not guilty to murder and using an instrument of a crime, and previously pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Hupperterz's trial started last week with explosive allegations by Nenner accusing Miley of killing Burleigh. But Miley, who is not charged with a crime, testified that he passed out after heavy drinking and did not hear the violent struggle between Hupperterz and Burleigh.

Prosecutors alleged that the two met at a bar, walked back to Hupperterz's apartment and fought violently after she refused a sex act.

Nenner pinned the blame on Miley, who had been out drinking with Hupperterz before the murder. Nenner said Miley stirred from his sleep and strangled Burleigh to keep her from screaming in the apartment the two men shared.

Miley, however, testified earlier in the trial that he fell asleep long before the violence broke out between Hupperterz and Burleigh, and that he didn't wake up until 1 p.m. later that day.

The trial, which started last week, took an emotional turn Wednesday when Burleigh's father, Ed Burleigh, described the last time he saw his daughter alive.

She had car trouble and called her dad for help, Ed Burleigh said. He drove from their family home in Montgomery County to Philadelphia and called AAA. After, they went to dinner and shared one last hug, he said.

"I had the opportunity to say goodbye," he testified.

The Burleigh parents have looked on from the front row of the courtroom every day of the trial. Her mother clutched a rosary through much of the proceedings.

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Samuel Gulino, testified for more than an hour, giving a blow-by-blow account of the "extensive injuries" Burleigh had all over her body.

The testimony took a toll on the large contingent of Burleigh's friends and family, who sat next to her parents through much of the trial.

Man Shot in Face After Giving Robbers $20

A 61-year-old man was shot in the face after being robbed of $20 by a group of young men.

The 61-year-old, described as a good guy who has not run afoul of the law, was surrounded outside of a takeout eatery at 22nd and Cambria Streets in North Philadelphia just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Philadelphia police said.

Surveillance video captured the young men, at least one armed, surrounding the man then taking $20 from him. The man stayed still and cooperated as the the gunman emptied his pockets.

The gunman then put the gun inches away from the man’s face and fired, police said.

“The individual that fired the shot was not happy getting that amount of money, maybe that’s the reason he fired the shot,” police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

Police rushed the man to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Due to the age of the robbers, police said they could possibly brag on social media about their actions. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
