Mother Held After Daughter's Death

The mother of an 11-year-old Philadelphia girl who was shot and killed by her 2-year-old brother is being held on $500,000 bail.

Tiffany Goldwire, 31, surrendered to authorities on Friday.

She now faces a slew of charges, including endangering the welfare of children, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and involuntary manslaughter.

Jamara Stevens and her siblings were playing with a gun inside Goldwire's home in Mantua on April 5, when Jamara's 2-year-old brother fired the gun, sending a bullet through her arm, chest, and heart. She died at the hospital.

Early reports from investigators indicated that it was a boyfriend of Goldwire's that brought the loaded gun into the home.

Goldwire's attorney, Eugene Tinari maintains that his client is innocent, and that she does not know who the gun belonged to or how it got into the house.

Tinari said that he expects a grand jury investigation of the case. He believes his client will be exonerated for the most serious charge, involuntary manslaughter.

"Ideally we would hope that the involuntary manslaughter charge would not be found by the grand jury or that she would be acquitted by a judge or jury," Tinari said. "I’m confident that she’ll be vindicated on the involuntary manslaughter charge."

In Pennsylvania, a person who is convicted of involuntary manslaughter as the parent of a child under the age of 12 can face up to 10 years of imprisonment.

The first hearing in the case has been set for May 19.

'Glitch' Summoned Dog for Jury Duty

Barrett Griner, IV is preparing for jury duty after a summons, mistakenly addressed in his dog's name, was confirmed to be inaccurate -- and meant for Barrett, not his dog.

The New Jersey resident said he was humored and confused when he received a notice from the Cumberland County Clerk of Courts last week for someone with the first name IV and the last name Griner; the legal name of his German Shepherd dog.

Officials from Cumberland County said the mix-up was likely due to a computer error, but that Griner would have to contact the office to confirm whether the summons was, in fact, intended for him.

Griner first attempted to contact the clerk through a form on the county's website.

"We had to answer all of these hilarious questions about the person listed on the summons, like is he or she an American citizen. I'm thinking, well, technically, she's German," he said.

Griner spoke with someone at the county office last week, and after providing some identification information, the office confirmed that the summons was meant for Barrett Griner, IV the man, not IV Griner, the dog.

"The summons was definitely for me. I pretty much told them who I was and they were able to look up my drivers license information and they said it was for me," he said. "The computer was found guilty for this mistake."

The computer glitch summons led to some speculation of voter registration fraud, since jury pools often come from a list of registered voters. According to the Cumberland County website, prospective jurors are randomly selected from a master list that is compiled with names from four lists: registered voters, licensed drivers, filers of state gross income tax returns and filers of homestead rebate applications.

A search of the New Jersey voter registration status log found no one by the name of IV Griner registered to vote in the state.

"I read that there was a lot of people that think my dog was actually registered and may have voted. It was just a crazy computer glitch that spit out the wrong name, that's all," he said.

Griner is scheduled to report to Cumberland County Superior Court for jury duty in May.

The manager suffered a bloody nose and cuts on his left elbow.

The manager told NBC10 the attack happened so quickly that he was unable to get a good look at the suspects and provide a detailed description. He's also unsure whether the men were armed.

Trial Set for Alleged Teen Rapist

A trial date has been set for a teenager accused of raping several teen girls.

The trial for Joshua Benson, 19, is scheduled to begin on July 14.

Benson remains held on $5 million bail after being charged with raping and sexually assaulting multiple underage girls -- some who he met online.

At least eight victims came forward and accused Benson of sexual assault.

He was arraigned last November on charges that he raped two young girls.

Originally, authorities said the Bensalem, Pa., native also violently sexually assaulted five other girls over a five-month time period when he was under the age of 18. All of the victims were between the ages of 14 and 16, officials said.

After media coverage of Benson's arrest, another woman came forward and said he assaulted her in 2011 when she was just 17. Since the alleged assault occurred when Benson was also underage additional charges were filed in juvenile court, according to police.

Benson moved to the area from Utah about over three years ago, shortly before the alleged assaults began, officials said.

Benson, who cursed at reporters on his way into court following his arrest, met some of his victims on a dating website and others through friends, authorities say. They say the teen would befriend the girls and make them trust him before violently forcing himself on them.

"Once he befriended them and gained trust in them where they agreed to have a very short-term relationship with him. Once he began engaging in sexual contact it immediately turned violent," Bensalem Police Sgt. Andrew Aninsman said.

The most recent victims say they were forced to perform sex acts in the basement of a townhome along Arrowood Drive in Bensalem, officials said.

Benson was locked up in a juvenile detention center on charges he assaulted the five girls while he was underage. He was then transferred to the Bucks County Prison after he turned 18.

Police believe there could still be more victims. They urge any girls to come forward.

"We do believe there are many other victims out there," Aninsman said. "If you see this, and your gut is wrenching as to what happened to you, pick up the phone and call Bensalem Police and we will make sure that we do everything in our power to make sure you get justice."

A young girl continues to recover after she was struck in a hit-and-run crash in the Olney section of the city last week.

McKayla Williams, 5, was playing outside her home on Laveer Street back on April 16. While she was outside, witnesses say she was struck by a vehicle that was passing by.

“When my daughter went across the street, that’s when they saw the car zooming down the block,” said Robbyn Williams, the girl’s mother.

According to witnesses, the driver, an unidentified woman, briefly stepped out of the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

“I just grabbed my daughter and went upstairs and called 911,” Williams said. “After that, when I came outside, she was gone.”

McKayla was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital where she was treated for a leg injury and seven fractures to her foot.

The family says the young girl will spend the next month in a cast and in a wheelchair before undergoing several more months of physical therapy. Doctors expect her to eventually make a full recovery.

Sources tell NBC10 that the initial report of the hit-and-run was taken to the 35th District but that the investigation stopped there. Williams says she plans to follow up with the accident investigation division.

“I don’t want her to get away with it,” Williams said. “I don’t think it’s fair to me nor her.”

Police have not yet released a description of the suspect. Witnesses describe the hit-and-run vehicle as a Bronze SUV.

A speeding pickup truck, weaving past slower-moving vehicles was captured on surveillance video in the moments before police say it struck a Delaware County teenager.

Investigators didn't immediately know if the 18-year-old victim was riding or walking his bicycle along the side of W Chester Pike (U.S. Route 13) near W Sellers Avenue in Ridley Park, Pa. around 11 p.m. when he was struck by the pickup, which fled the scene.

The victim, identified as Christopher Brooks of Woodlyn, Pa., was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in critical condition with head trauma and a broken leg, according to investigators.

Police said the 18-year-old underwent surgery Tuesday morning and appeared to be slightly improving though he remained in critical condition.

Private surveillance video released early Tuesday shows a pickup truck speeding past slower-moving vehicles along West Chester Pike.

The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a dark pickup truck with front end damage. Police hoped a piece of the vehicle left at the scene would help them determine the exact make and model of the vehicle.

Three college students were arrested after they allegedly walked into an apartment, kicked in a bedroom door and beat up another student, according to Newark police.

University of Delaware students Andrew Lee, Jason Zimmell and Ayrton Doeer were arrested after they entered an unlocked apartment complex, kicked down the door to a bedroom inside one of the apartments and began kicking and punching a 22-year-old UDel student who was inside with a 20-year-old woman who also attends the university, police said in a press release.
