NJ Pair Forced Woman Into Prostitution, Prosecutors Say

A pair in New Jersey is facing human trafficking charges after allegedly holding a woman captive and forcing her into prostitution, prosecutors say.

Tyrone T. Washington, 33, and Shameka M. Lambert, 28, were arrested Nov. 24, by Edgewater police, and, subsequently, charged with human trafficking and endangering the welfare of a child following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Saturday, the Edgewater Police Department received a report that a woman was being forced into prostitution by Washington, prosecutors say.

Allegedly, a subsequent probe revealed that the victim has been held against her will in Edgewater by Washington for about 12 days.

Prosecutors also allege that during this time a child was living with Washington and Lambert in the same residence where the victim was being held.

Attorney information for Washington and Lambert was not immediately known.

The pair is scheduled to appear in court in Hackensack Wednesday.

Employee Killed in Municipal Building Shooting in Poconos

A township employee was shot to death Tuesday morning inside a municipal building in the Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania, according to state police.

Mike Tripus, 65, was found dead inside the building after state police responded to a report of gunfire inside the Paradise Township municipal building on Paradise Valley Road, police said.

The suspect was identified as David Green, 72, of Swiftwater, according to police. He was arrested at the building and taken into custody.

No motive was immediately given. Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Paradise is about 100 north of Philadelphia. Tripus lived in Stroudsburg.

He was building code official and sewer enforcement officer for Paradise, according to the township's phone directory.

Detectives searched through Green's home on Sugarbush Road for evidence. Neighbors told NBC10 he had just moved to the home over the summer.

"Shock. Disbelief. Sadness. Just tragic," Green's neighbor, Bobbi Snyder, said.

Snyder described Green as a kind and generous neighbor.

"He came for dinner several times," she said. "When it snowed he had a new snow blower and he came and blew the snow off our driveway for us. Always friendly."

Snyder said Green had been working on his home for months and she believed he was having trouble obtaining permits from the township.

"I know there's been difficulties with getting permits for anybody that's trying to build anything in here," she said. "It's been very hard to do that with the township."

Paradise Township is about 20 miles north of Ross Township, where a gunman opened fire at a Board of Supervisors' meeting in 2013, killing three.

11 Things You Need to Know About NJ’s Legal Weed Bill

New Jersey moved closer to legalizing cannabis Monday after a nearly four-hour hearing.

If approved, the legislation would move to the floor of the state Senate and Assembly. A voting session is scheduled for later this month.

The Garden State would join 10 other states and the District of Columbia if it legalizes recreational cannabis. More than 30 states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, already have medical programs.

With legalization looking more and more likely, here’s what you need to know about the proposed bill.

Who can smoke pot legally under the proposed legislation?

Senate Bill 2703 would make recreational cannabis legal for adults 21 years and older. It would prohibit adults from buying and giving pot to anyone under the legal age, including children with medical conditions. Those patients would need permits under the state’s medicinal program.

Where can you buy it?

Adults will need to find designated retailers to buy their legal pot. These dispensaries must hold a state-issued Class 4 Marijuana license. Different permits will be required for growers, wholesalers and testing facilities.

How much can I buy?

Individuals can purchase up to 1 ounce or less of marijuana, 16 ounces of marijuana-infused products in solid form, 72 ounces in liquid form and 7 grams of cannabis concentrate.

Can I smoke in public?

Sorry, no.

When can I buy pot legally in New Jersey?

The bill is not a done deal, which means there is no hard launch date for implementation. The bill will now advance to the floors of the state Senate and General Assembly for final voting. If it passes in both houses, Gov. Phil Murphy must sign it into law. He has been a strong advocate for legalizing recreational cannabis and is expected to approve the bill once it arrives on his desk. A voting session is scheduled for later this month.

How much will it cost?

As is often the case, taxing legal cannabis remains a sticking point in New Jersey. An early version of the bill called for a graduated tax that could eventually top out at 25 percent for purchases. A newer version called for just 12 percent tax but allowed for municipalities to apply for up to a 2 percent additional tax on cannabis. Lawmakers will likely battle over taxation during the next vote.

I have a previous arrest. Will my record be expunged?

Yes! The bill calls for expediting expungements for people with cannabis-related criminal backgrounds.

What happens to the medical cannabis program?

A separate bill under consideration, dubbed Jake’s Law after a 7-year-old who died of brain cancer, would expand the current program and allow for more growers and dispensaries. Patients would be allowed to buy up to 2.5 ounces a month from January to July. After July, patients could purchase up to 3 ounces per month. People in hospice care would have no limits.

I live in a different state. Can I buy pot in New Jersey and travel home with it?

While it might be tempting to cross the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, pick up some weed and bring it back to Pennsylvania or Delaware, don’t do it. Crossing state lines remains illegal even in regions where multiple states have legalized recreational pot. Thank the federal government for that one - cannabis is still considered a Schedule 1 drug by the DEA and, therefore, crossing borders with the plant can get you locked up.

There is one caveat, however. Patients registered under a different state’s medical cannabis program will be allowed to travel outside state lines with cannabis.

Can I grow my own plant?

Strangely enough, the answer is no for now. New Jersey would become the second state, next to Washington, to prohibit people from growing their owns plants.

What about edibles, tinctures, oils, etc.?

Yep, those would all be included in the proposed legislation.

Davis made the announcement a day after a judge rejected her lawsuit to order Bucks County officials to count more than 200 absentee ballots received after the legal deadline of Nov. 2.

With Tomlinson's victory, Republicans will hold a 29-21 majority in Pennsylvania's Senate after losing five seats in the Nov. 6 election.

Davis will still return to Harrisburg, since she also ran successfully for a fifth term in her state House seat.

3 Premature Babies Die After NJ Hospital Infection Outbreak

Two premature babies who contracted a bacterial infection at a New Jersey hospital in the throes of an outbreak, died last week, officials say.

It is the third death of a premature baby in Newark's University Hospital after the Department of Health became aware that the hospital had an outbreak of the bacteria A. baumannii in its neonatal intensive care unit.

The department says that, while the babies were infected with A. baumannii, it may not have been what killed them, as they also suffered from other medical conditions due to being born premature.

Four babies have been infected in total at the hospital, officials say.

At the end of September, a premature baby who had been cared for at the hospital and had the bacteria died after being transferred to another facility, and before the Department's notification of problems in the NICU, health officials say. Another baby was effectively treated for the bacteria and was discharged last month.

No new infections have been confirmed since October.

The department issued the news about the deaths of the other two babies Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into the outbreak of A. baumannii in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of University Hospital.

It said it was on-site at the hospital Tuesday to investigate the facility's internal processes around reporting deaths amid ongoing outbreaks. The department said as of Monday, the hospital's own infection control program was not aware of the most recent deaths when contacted.

A University Hospital spokesperson on Tuesday said the hospital has "continue[d] to reinforce proper procedures and protocols with our team."

"We have worked diligently since the Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria was discovered in our neonatal intensive care unit to control the outbreak, and there have been no new cases in the NICU since October," the spokesperson said.
