44 Dead Dogs Found in Freezers in NJ Woman's Horror Home: PD

A 65-year-old New Jersey woman faces an animal cruelty charge after authorities say they found 44 dead dogs in plastic bags in her freezers and more than 160 dogs living in deplorable conditions in and around her home.

Detectives helping out the Burlington County Health Department with an inspection Tuesday made the grisly discoveries at the Oakshade Road home of Donna Roberts in Shamong Township. State Police say the smell of animal feces and ammonia permeated the entire residence, and several first responders actually got nauseous and dizzy because of the odor.

Ultimately, detectives found more than 160 living dogs in the residence. Four of them were in critical condition and had to be taken to an emergency clinic; the rest were evaluated and treated at the scene by animal shelter workers.

The 44 dead dogs were found packaged in bags in various freezers throughout the home, authorities say.

Roberts was released from custody with a future court date. It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.

It's still not clear how the 44 dogs died, but investigators say that's not the point.

"Although the circumstances surrounding the demise of the 44 dogs that were discovered inside plastic bags in freezers remain under investigation, the deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic," Colonel Patrick Callahan of the New Jersey State Police said in a statement. "Troopers take an oath to protect and safeguard life, including the lives and well-being of pets, which can be vulnerable to abuse."

Called: Obama Aide Knocks Off Trump Ally in NJ House Race

A congressman from New Jersey who sought a third term after aligning himself closely with the Trump administration's agenda was ousted by a Democratic challenger who worked in the Obama White House.

NBC News declared Democrat Andy Kim, a national security aide to former President Barack Obama, the apparent winner of New Jersey's 3rd congressional district.

U.S. Rep. Tom MacArthur, who represents portions of Burlington and Ocean counties, also released a statement saying that he called and congratulated Kim on his victory.

"My staff and I will work with him to ensure a smooth transition in every way," MacArthur wrote. "It has been an honor to represent the people of Ocean and Burlington counties over the last four years, and I am proud to have done so with honesty and integrity."

MacArthur had initially refused to concede, despite facing long odds as provisional ballots were being counted this week. He trailed Kim by more than 3,000 votes after Election Day ballots were tallied.

He told political news site Talking Points Memo on Wednesday that he would "when I’m ready to."

MacArthur's loss further expands Democrats' hold on the House, and means New Jersey now has elected 11 Democrats to its 12 congressional seats. Only incumbent U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, who won a 20th term in the November election, remains a Republican representing the Garden State in Congress. Both U.S. senators from New Jersey are also Democrats.

The U.S. House historian's database shows he's the first Asian-American elected from New Jersey, according to the Associated Press.

Kim, 36, is a Rhodes scholar who grew up in Marlton and served in the White House as a counter-terrorism adviser. He vowed during the campaign to fight for people instead of corporations and preventing climate change.

MacArthur, 57, is a former insurance company professional supported the Trump tax cuts, supported repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and backed tougher immigration border security.

At least one person was killed after a chain reaction crash involving several tractor trailers on I-78 westbound in Windsor Township, Berks County, Wednesday afternoon.

A crash initially occurred near mile marker 29, slowing down westbound traffic on I-78.

After that accident, a tractor trailer traveling westbound was unable to stop for the traffic ahead. The tractor trailer then struck a passenger vehicle at mile marker 32.5 which was then pushed into the back of another tractor trailer, leading to the chain reaction crash.

In all, five tractor trailers and one passenger vehicle were involved. Two of the tractor trailers and the passenger vehicle also caught fire.

At least one person was killed in the crash while three were injured.

I-78 was shut down in both directions. One eastbound lane later reopened around 7 p.m.

Editor's Note: Officials initially reported that two people were killed in the crash. They later told NBC10 that at least one person was confirmed dead. The story has been changed to reflect this update.

Man in Viral Shave Training Video Now Has Home, Hope

        $

As he sat aboard an evening train headed for New Jersey in September, Anthony Torres couldn't have known that his life would be turned upside down.

Surrounded by fellow passengers and face white with shaving cream, Torres passed a disposable razor under his chin, then across his cheeks and finally down his upper lip, meticulously going through the grooming process. Across the aisle from him sat another passenger, cellphone out and dutifully recording this strange interaction unfolding before his very eyes.

As things do in the age of smartphones, Torres' actions quickly spread across social media, turning him into a viral punching bag. But after having suffered the ignominy of cruelty, Torres' fortunes are now looking up.

What many missed amid the outrage, disgust and criticism that followed the clip of Torres, was the man behind the video.

Torres, it turned out, was homeless at the time.

The night he boarded the train to New Jersey, he was on his way to his brother's home in Trenton, having boarded from Manhattan's Pennsylvania Station.

Prior to that, Torres had spent days in a homeless shelter, leaving before he had a chance to shower and clean up. He resorted to the on-train shave because he wanted to look "presentable" for his brother.

After revealing the reason behind his actions on the train, Torres was showered with an outpouring of support that translated into a GoFundMe campaign.

"I appreciate everything they did for me," he said.

These days, the 56-year-old no longer has to shave on a train.

Instead, he's living in a rented room, feeling confident, full of life and no longer humiliated by the video that plastered his face across the Internet.

"I sleep good. I got my own room. I lock my own door. I got my own key," Torres said.

Torres' brother, Dash, is helping him be fiscally responsible by handling the donations collected through the GoFundMe campaign.

He is using the money to save for a mobile home, which he hopes to be able to buy in January.

That purchase would make the once-homeless man a first-time homebuyer.

In the aftermath of his newfound good fortune, Torres, who regularly attends church, remains humble and thankful.

"God gave me this second chance, I don't care what anybody said," he told NBC10. "I turned towards the Lord and this time it's for real."

NJ GoFundMe Couple, Homeless Man Made Up Story, Source Says

        $

        0

The New Jersey couple who became famous for raising money for a homeless man after he helped with their disabled car -- as well as the homeless man himself -- will all face charges for allegedly providing a false story in order to raise money for themselves, a source familiar with the case told NBC10.

Mark D'Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt will face charges including conspiracy and theft by deception, according to the source.

A complaint obtained by NBC10 alleges that the three conspired with one another to make up a false story in order to raise more than $400,000.

Investigators say the three deliberately prevented donors for their GoFundMe campaign from gaining information "that would affect their judgment about solicited contribution to that fundraising effort."

D'Amico and McClure turned themselves in Wednesday to Burlington County prosecutors, the source said. The source did not confirm whether or not Bobbitt turned himself in as well.

The three initially earned fame in 2017. The couple claimed Bobbitt used $20 to help McClure get gas when her car ran out on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia. McClure and D'Amico then launched a GoFundMe page to supposedly raise money for Bobbitt; the page brought in over $400,000 from 14,000 contributors.

The account, at first, led to appearances for Bobbitt and McClure on national TV programs. But it then turned into a dispute over the money.

Bobbitt accused the couple of dipping into the funds and using them as a "personal piggy bank" to bankroll a lifestyle they couldn't afford.

Bobbitt later sued the couple over mismanagement of the funds and a judge ordered sworn statements to determine what happened to the cash, which Bobbitt's attorney, Chris Fallon, said had disappeared.

The couple denied any wrongdoing and accused Bobbitt of spending $25,000 in less than two weeks last year on drugs as well as paying for overdue legal bills and sending money to family.

The couple's lawyer, Earnest Badway, later said Bobbitt had gotten about $200,000. But Fallon said his client had received only about $75,000.

The couple also bought Bobbitt a camper with some of the cash and parked it on land McClure's family owns in New Jersey. But Bobbitt became homeless again after D'Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.

In September, police raided the couple's home in Florence, New Jersey, hauling away a new BMW on a flatbed truck. Badway said that all the couple's personal and business financial statements, along with jewelry and cash were seized in the raid.

At that point, officials said the couple was under investigation, though no charges had been filed.

D'Amico was arrested in September in Burlington County on an unrelated $500 warrant for an October 2017 traffic stop, according to officials. At the time, he was driving on a suspended license and also had a broken tail light. He also failed to appear in court on two separate occassions, according to court records.
