Attempted Murder Charges for Shooting of Philly Officer

Two men were charged Friday in the shooting of Philadelphia police officer Paul Sulock in the city's Kensington neighborhood earlier this week.

Jerome Hill, 29, faces multiple counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, criminal trespass and other crimes for allegedly shooting Sulock, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said. Prosecutors hit him with 13 charges in all.

Nineteen-year-old James Gauthney, an accused accomplice, was charged with hindering apprehension and obstruction of justice, prosecutors said.

Hill is being held on $3.3 million bail. Prosecutors are seeking $1 million bail for Gauthney, who is also still in custody and scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon.

Sulock, 10-year police force veteran and married father of four, was shot in the right thigh Wednesday while on patrol with his partner.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner promised swift justice as he and other city officials rushed to Temple University Hospital shortly after the shooting.

"The officers' actions were not only appropriate, they were heroic," Krasner said.

On Friday, Krasner declined to discuss Hill's lengthy criminal record beyond the charges he is currently facing. Court documented revealed, however, that Hill's criminal past dates back to 2007 when he faced attempted murder charges. Hill was 17 years old at the time. Those charges were ultimately dropped, according to court records.

But in 2008, he was charged with carrying a firearm without a license. In 2010, he was charged with aggravated assault and in 2011 he was arrested, again, for carrying a gun without a license. He served four years before being arrested in 2016 for driving under the influence, court records showed.

"It is extremely serious when anyone brandishes a weapon in the street but that much more serious when police arrive on the scene to make peace and you turn and fire on them," Krasner said.

The chaos leading to Sulock's shooting erupted around 11:10 a.m. Wednesday near Madison and G streets in the shadow of SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line.

Sulock and his partner were patrolling nearby when they saw two men crouched behind cars, possibly preparing to shoot at each other, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

When Sulock and his partner approached the two men, Hill opened fire, officials said.

Sulock was struck just above the knee. Despite his injury, Sulock chased down the suspects and apprehended one of them, police said.

Sulock's partner, Hill and Gauthney were not injured, police said.

A Chester man was charged for a shooting at the parking lot of Springfield Mall in Delaware County in October, police said Friday.

Waheed Jenkins, 31, was charged with seven counts of reckless endangerment and related firearm offenses for his alleged involvement in the Oct. 20 shooting, according to court documents. He was arraigned at district court.

The Springfield Delco Police Department said an argument between two groups of men inside the busy shopping center spilled into the parking lot just after 1 p.m., with both groups going to their cars before opening fire at one another.

Shoppers were forced to evacuate and stores closed as officers armed with long guns searched the mall, which is a popular destination in Delaware County and is typically packed with shoppers during the weekends.

One of the suspect vehicles, a Silver Nissan Altima, drove away down Sproul Road. Police do not know how the other group of suspects left the scene.

Four vehicles were struck by the gunfire.

"Uncle Frank" still lives on his childhood street in Conshohocken 93 years — and one World War  — after he was born on West Seventh Street in 1925.

He wasn't always known as Uncle Frank.

Many years ago, Frank Ferraoili was a teenager flying bombing missions over Italy during World War II. Back then, he was a kid who became a man very quickly.

"We bombed bridges, factories, and an oil refinery," Ferraioli said. "That’s what killed Germany."

He is now the last surviving member of his air squad. He was drafted at 18 and went on to fly 40 missions in a B-24 bomber, delivering striking runs over the Alps in Italy.

The Montgomery County native originally enlisted as a pilot, but eventually enrolled in gunnery school. With that training, he and his squad executed missions choking off German supplies in 1943.

One mission saw over 300 anti-aircraft guns aimed at Ferraioli and his crew. Their plane went down and the crew didn’t make it back to base.

He did eventually make it, but many of his cohorts didn't. Only 30 percent of the airmen survived the war.

"I never thought I’d make it out alive," Ferraioli said.
