Mom to Surrender for Daughter's Accidental Death: Lawyer

The mother of an 11-year-old girl who was accidentally shot by her baby brother is expected to turn herself in on Thursday, according to her attorney.

Eugene Tinari told NBC10 that his client, Tiffany Goldwire, will surrender at police headquarters on 8th and Race streets on Thursday.

Goldwire was charged on Wednesday with the involuntary manslaughter of her daughter, Jamara Stevens, police said. She is currently wanted by detectives.

Stevens was playing with her brothers and sisters inside the Goldwire's Mantua bedroom on April 5, when her 2-year-old brother cocked the gun, pointed it at the girl and pulled the trigger. The bullet sailed through the girl's arm and into her chest and heart.

Speaking to NBC10.com, Goldwire said the gun had been left behind in another room by her boyfriend and was taken by the woman's 14-year-old son. She was visibly distraught over the girl's death.

"For all the mothers who lose their kids, I feel their pain. And to the ones that still have their children, treasure every moment with your kids because you never know when you'll never see them again," she said.

Tinari tells NBC10 he plans to speak on the charges against his client once she surrenders to police on Thursday. Charges have not been filed against the mother's boyfriend.

Rolling Chair Operators Want Jitneys Off AC Boardwalk

Since they were established in the late 19th Century, rolling chairs have been both a popular means of traveling along the Atlantic City Boardwalk as well as an integral part of the city’s history. But now several rolling chair operators say their line of work could be in jeopardy thanks to another form of transportation.

Starting Thursday, the local Jitney Association will begin their trial run of jitney trams on the AC boardwalk. The test period will last until May 2 and will feature one battery-powered boardwalk jitney tram on a route from the Revel Casino Hotel to the Tropicana. If successful, officials say there could be up to 10 trams on the boardwalk during the summer.

“We’re not trying to put anybody out of work,” said Tom Woodruff, president of the Atlantic City Jitney Association. "We think the rolling chairs are an Atlantic City icon. It’s something unique and we think we can coexist.”

Officials with Ocean Rolling Chair and Atlantic City Boardwalk Rolling Chairs disagree however. They claim that their businesses are already struggling and that the introduction of jitney trams on the boardwalk will only make their situation worse. The jitney tram car would cost $3.00 a ride, cheaper than the $5.00 minimum for rolling chair rides every six blocks.

“For all of these operators, the deck is stacked against them,” said Joel Schwartz, an attorney representing the rolling chair companies.

Officials with the rolling chair companies filed a civil complaint and tried to convince a judge to stop the trial run. They argued that the city council had no right to allow the trial period because the boardwalk is part of the state-run tourism district and therefore falls under the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority(CRDA).

“I think it’s horrendous,” said John Taimanglo of Ocean Rolling Chairs. “I think that whole council should be arrested.”

Atlantic City officials say the council was within their right however.

“I don’t believe the CRDA has chosen to preempt our right to regulate,” said Michael Perugini, the Assistant City Solicitor for Atlantic City.

Ultimately, Judge Raymond Batten ruled that there was no proof of any adverse financial consequences from the tram’s trial run and refused to halt it. That means the trams will roll out as scheduled on Thursday.

“I don’t think it was fair,” Taimanglo said. “I don’t think it was right.”

If the test run is successful, rolling chair operators say they will continue their fight to stop more trams from hitting the boardwalk.

Mom Tries to Kill Kids by Driving Into River: Police

A man swooped in to save a South Jersey family after a mother allegedly tried to kill her teenage children.

Darnell Taylor is mourning the loss of his father, who died from cancer Wednesday morning. Yet while Taylor is now coping with the tragedy, he can take solace in the fact that he prevented another one from happening just a day before his father's death.

Police say 49-year-old Joann Smith was driving her van on West Front Street in Florence Township, N.J around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. With her 15, 14, and 13 year-old children inside the vehicle, Smith allegedly accelerated onto a boat ramp and into the Delaware River.

Investigators say she was intentionally trying to kill her children.

Taylor says he was driving to dinner with his wife when he noticed the vehicle partially submerged in the water and the family trapped inside.

"I got out of the car and heard people screaming," Taylor said. "I took off my jacket, jumped in and swam out there."

Taylor swam towards the family while his wife called 911.

"I couldn't get the window open because the window in the van was not a pop out window," Taylor said. "So I kept telling the young lady to kick the window out and she kicked it out."

One by one, Taylor grabbed Smith, her daughter and two sons to safety. Taylor claims Smith didn't say anything during the rescue except for "Thank you."

One of the children suffered cuts on the leg while Smith was checked into a medical facility for a mental evaluation.

Police claim Smith intentionally drove the van into the water. She was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of child endangerment.

Smith’s bail was set at $600,000. Officials originally said that Smith would likely appear in Superior Court in Mount Holly Thursday afternoon. Thursday morning however they said her first appearance wouldn't occur until Monday morning at the earliest.

Detectives with the Florence Township Police Department along with officials from the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the case.

Smith's three children are currently staying with relatives, shaken by their terrifying experience but still alive thanks to Taylor.

"He was a godsend," said Bob Lane, a Florence Township resident. "He saved them. That water is not warm and he jumped in."

While many people are calling him a hero, Taylor disagrees.

"I'm not a hero," he said. "I'm just a member of this community and anyone else would have done the same thing."

A Philadelphia college student died in a campus building Wednesday morning less than a month away from when he was set to graduate.

Medics were called to Chestnut Hill College around 8:45 a.m. for the report of an unresponsive student on a couch in St. Joseph Hall, according to Philadelphia Police.

They found the 22-year-old Chestnut Hill senior not breathing and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to investigators.

The college later identified the student as Bradley Amerman, a business major.

"Our sincere prayers and heartfelt sympathy are extended to the family and friends of Bradley David Amerman and to the Class of 2014," read a statement from college president Sister Carol Jean Vale.

Police remained on the scene throughout Wednesday morning as they tried to figure out what led to Amerman's death. According to law enforcement sources, there were no signs of trauma. An autopsy will be performed on Thursday.

The college held an afternoon gathering to remember Amerman. Staff members and counselors were also available to students at the small liberal arts college.

"I feel really bad for the family and I wish that we could do something," said Chestnut Hill student Elizabeth Raub. "The family will be in my prayers."

The college, which sits on 75 acres of land at the intersection of Northwestern and Germantown Avenue's at the edge of the city's Chestnut Hill neighborhood, has an undergraduate enrollment of about 1,500 students, according to U.S. News statistics.

About one year ago, a Chestnut Hill College freshman was hurt when he fell three stories from Fournier Hall on the college's campus.

Two New Jersey teens are facing criminal charges after allegedly sharing nude photos of other teens, some of whom were engaging in sex acts, police said.

The Little Falls Police Department said Wednesday that a 16-year-old West Orange boy was arrested after he texted eight naked photos of a 17-year-old girl to a 16-year-old girlfriend from Little Falls.

That friend is then accused of showing the photos to others, and may have posted them on social media, police say.

The girl is also believed to have sent other videos and photos of underage teens engaging in sex acts to other juveniles.

The teens are charged with endangering the welfare of a child by possessing child pornography. Both teens were released to the custody of their parents.

Police are urging parents to explain to their children that sending, taking and sharing of naked photos of juveniles is a crime.

For a second day, city workers won’t be heading to work at a Center City high-rise today as crews continue to deal with a broken pipe that flooded elevators.

A broken pipe flooded the elevators of the 18-story One Parkway Building located at 1515 Arch Street, according to city officials.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s office announced Wednesday morning that the 18-story building will remain closed until further notice due to mechanical issues with the elevators.

Gunmen On Run After Stealing $105K from Armored Truck

Armed gunmen have made off with more than $100,000 in cash after holding up an armored truck on a delivery in Northeast Philadelphia.

The heist took place around 9 a.m. on Thursday in the parking lot of the TD Bank branch at 6635 Frankford Avenue in the Tacony section of Philadelphia, police said.

Police say two men, armed with assault rifles and wearing black bandannas over their faces, held up a Garda armored truck employee during a cash delivery.

The gunmen fled in a white van and ditched that vehicle along the 6600 block of Tackawanna Street -- which is around the corner from the bank. Police say the men then jumped into a white Cadillac, possibly an Escalade, and fled. There may have been other occupants in the second car, police said.

The men made off with a total of $105,000 in cash, police said. No one was hurt and the suspects are still on the loose.

One suspect is described as 6-foot-1-inches tall, 160 lbs. and was wearing jeans and a gray hoodie. The other man is 5-foot-8-inches tall, thin build and was wearing jeans and a black hoodie.

Police and the FBI are at the scene investigating.

Thursday's heist is more than a mile from another Garda armored truck heist along Frankford Avenue on Halloween last year.

In that robbery, two suspects wore Scream masks and brandished assault rifles as they held up an armored truck delivery man. Those suspects made off $310,000. The FBI says no one has been arrested for that crime and that the investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Caught on Cam: Red Bull Bandits Rob Wawas

Police in South Jersey say a couple spent their weekend stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of Red Bull.

Toms River Police say surveillance video in multiple Wawa stores along the Route 37 corridor captured the alleged energy drink thieves in action last weekend.

According to police the heists occurred between 4 and 5 p.m. each day. The woman wearing a red shirt would enter the store first, likely serving a lookout, according to investigators.

She would remain in the front of the store as the man, wearing a suit and wheeling a black suitcase, would enter the store and head for the refrigerated beverage storage room.

The man is then seen two to three minutes later leaving the store – his wheelie bag visibly weighed down. The duo then got into a dark, older model Dodge Durango and drove away.

Police said the stores later discovered that they were short some Red Bull. In total about $800 of the energy drink went missing. In total there are four Wawas along Route 37 in the area.

Police described the woman as having shoulder-length brown hair and a tattoo above her left breast. The man is described as having slicked-back, receding brown hair pulled into a pony tail with a chinstrap-style beard.

Anyone who recognizes these people is asked to contact Det. Bob O'Neill at
732-349-0150, ext. 1255.

Rocky Fans Raise Thousands for Sick K-9

0

The Jenkintown Police Department is resting easy about their sick K-9 Rocky. The department announced it stopped accepting donations for the dog's medical bills on the borough's website yesterday. The entire $8,000 needed for the officer's care was raised.

"We are not taking donations any more. We are pretty much all set. We really were stunned by the outpouring of support," said Jenkintown Mayor Ed Foley.

"This dog really belongs to the community. We’ve never used borough budget money. The upkeep always came from the community and people kind of feel like it’s their pet."

The Montgomery County K-9 needed life-saving surgery after the dog suddenly fell sick back on March 29 while at work. Rocky is the 18th officer on the force. Some of his tasks include tracking fugitives, screening for drugs and community policing.

"All of a sudden he was really seriously ill. He started to vomit and the handler had to take him to the hospital. For this to happen when it did, go figure," said Jenkintown Police Chief Al DiValentino.

Doctor's tell the department that they still don't know what caused Rocky's sudden illness, but it led to emergency surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Animal Hospital. And more than $8,000 in medical bills.

The timing for Rocky's health issues was unfortunate.

According to DiValentino, the Department's K-9 unit is solely funded by donations from local businesses and organizations. Two days before Rocky got sick, the insurance policy for the dog expired and there was not enough donated money to renew it.

The cost of Rocky's surgery and post-surgery care ballooned to thousands of dollars. After hearing from doctors that Rocky had a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery, the department immediately started fundraising to pay for his continued care.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman met Rocky shortly after he was inducted to serve the department in 2008. Ferman posted a flier with information about Rocky's condition on Facebook to promote the fundraiser.

"He has been a dedicated public servant for many years," she said. "When I heard from the Chief about Rocky's situation, I thought social media might be a good platform to let our community know about the need and how they could help."

Numerous schools in the Jenkintown School District pitched in with the fundraising effort. Activities to raise the funds engaged the entire school community from selling $1 paper dogs to teachers at Jenkintown High School donating $5 to have a dress down day.

"Whenever there's something going on in Jenkintown, the whole community comes together to help. And he is the dog that comes to the school and the kids see him during class trips, so the kids all love him," Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Susan Hughes said. "Everybody loves to help a dog."

Jenkintown Borough is going forward with a previously scheduled raffle to benefit Rocky this Saturday as part of their "Spring Egg Hunt" event. Mayor Foley hoped Rocky was well enough to make a surprise visit the event, but he will likely need more rest and will be back on the streets soon.

"When we reached out to the public for support, the response was immediate and overwhelming, said DiValentino. "Again, we thank you for your kindness and generosity. When Rocky returns to work, please feel free to stop in and visit him."
