Floating Package That Sparked Bomb Scare Was NASA Experiment

A mysterious package attached to a bright red parachute set off a bomb scare on Tuesday — but the white Styrofoam box turned out to be a NASA experiment.

A group of solar panel employees spotted the box when it floated to the ground at a solar panel field affiliated with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, off of New Road in South Brunswick, around noon.

When the employees approached the package, they discovered a handwritten message attached to the outside of it.

"NASA Atmospheric Research Instrument NOT A BOMB! If found, please call [redacted]. If this lands near the President, we at NASA wish him a great round of golf."

Not reassured by the message or the noise the package was making, employees reported the box to police.

"We just had a package — I'm not making this up — parachute onto my site," a caller is heard saying in a recording. "It's a white Styrofoam package. It's making a weird noise."

Police dispatched officers and a bomb squad to the area, evacuated the site and set up a perimeter, a South Brunswick detective said. Secret Service also investigated the package, according to the detective.

They soon learned the box filled with wires really was part of a NASA experiment. The box "contained a weather balloon instrument that measures ozone," NASA said in a statement provided to News 4 New York.

The parachute launched from a Rutgers University-owned site as part of a "Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study."

"In this instance, a summer student employee, not affiliated with Rutgers, added extra text, in a misguided attempt to be lighthearted," NASA said.

"The student who appended the note was removed from the project, and we are taking steps to standardize the labeling on these scientific instruments," NASA added.

A total of six weather balloons were launched on Sunday, police said. So far, two of the balloons have been recovered — including the one found Tuesday and another one found in Readington Township, near President Donald Trump's Bedminster golf club.

Police say anyone who finds one of the remaining four balloons has nothing to worry about.

They don't have any plans to charge the NASA employee or the intern with a crime for releasing the balloons.

The police chief of the Palisades Parkway Police Department has been arrested, accused of ordering cocaine online.

Michael J. Coppola, 43, had been buying cocaine on the Internet and getting it delivered to a post office box, prosecutors say.

Detectives investigating the case, including postal investigators and Homeland Security, along with Bergen County prosecutors, put a package containing imitation cocaine in Coppola's post office box.

He went to get the package on Aug. 9, picking up what he believed to be cocaine, and then was pulled over and arrested during a traffic stop on Route 80 East in Ridgefield Park, authorities said.

Coppola is facing charges of attempt to possess cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Attorney information wasn't immediately clear. He's expected to appear in court in Hackensack on Aug. 22.

Gunman Fired at Officers 1st in Deadly South Philly Chase

A man fired at officers before being shot and killed by police in South Philadelphia on Thursday morning in a hail of gunfire that also included numerous bullets through the front of a police cruiser, police said.

The rolling incident began when two uniformed officers spotted Charles Meadows riding a bicycle the wrong way on the 2000 block of McKean Street around 11 a.m., police said while releasing new information Friday.

"He’s riding a bicycle in the area and they see a bulge on his right side which is consistent with a firearm," police spokesman Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said Thursday. "They go to approach the male to stop him and engage him. ... At some point while fleeing on foot, I should mention, he discarded the bike."

One officer drew his gun and told Meadows to stop and show his hands, investigators said. Meadows then fell to the ground and dropped a .40 caliber pistol, which the officer told him not to touch.

Meadows then grabbed the gun and fired at both officers, police said.

"At 20th and Mercy streets, the male does stop and an exchange of gunfire between the male and the officer takes place," Kinebrew said. "We're not sure if that is the moment the male is struck because the male does get up and continues to run right to here, 20th and Snyder."

At that point, two officers in another patrol car approached the scene, investigators said. Meadows then pointed his gun at the officers causing them to fire multiple times through the windshield of their police cruiser.

Meadows collapsed at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, dropping his gun, with six rounds still in the chamber on the ground, police said.

Social video of a man who appeared to be shot showed officers picking him off the sidewalk and taking him away in a police cruiser to a hospital, a common practice in Philadelphia for shooting victims known as "scoop-and-run."

Meadows died a short time later at the hospital, police said.

The large scene was cordoned off about 11 a.m. near the intersection of 20th Street and Snyder Avenue in the Girard Park section west of South Broad Street. At that location, a police cruiser could be seen parked with bullet holes through the front windshield.

Police found evidence that Meadows fired seven shots at the officers along 20th Street.

No officers were hurt.

With a myriad of candidates on September’s primary ballot for U.S. Senate and House of Representatives seats, unregistered voters in Delaware better make sure they’re registered.

Primary voter registration in Delaware closes Saturday.

Voters wanting to vote in the primary must register with a party affiliation in order to choose the Democrat and Republican nominees for the U.S. Senate seat. Democrats will be able to choose from candidates Thomas Carper and Evelyn Harris Kerri, while Republicans will have three choices: Robert Arlett, Eugene Truono Jr. and Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente, according to the Delaware Department of Elections.

The Republican primary also includes a U.S. House race where voters will choose between candidates Scott Walker and Lee Murphy. The winner of this race will face off against Democratic incumbent Lisa Blunt Rochester in November.

Previously registered voters hoping to change their party affiliation before the primary are out of luck as Saturday’s deadline only applies to unregistered voters. The deadline to change party affiliation was May 25.

Unregistered voters can register by visiting the state’s department of elections website.

Hope you enjoyed the sunshine Friday because on-and-off thunderstorms packing heavy downpours are brewing for this weekend.

“Random, hit-or-miss drenching thunderstorms, when it rains it pours,” NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Steve Sosna said.

There will be more clouds than a typical summer weekend no one is likely to escape the weekend dry, meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz said.

The weekend won’t be a total washout BUT periods of heavy thunderstorms with heavy downpours are possible, chief meteorologist Tammie Souza said.

The wet weather event ramps up later in the morning Saturday into Saturday afternoon. Some pockets of storms could strike Saturday night, then again on Sunday morning.

Some localized flooding is possible if a downpour parks over a region or an area is hit by several showers.

High temps will be in the 80s.

Pop-up, drenching thunderstorms continue Sunday afternoon and evening, Monday and, even into, Tuesday. Inches of rain are possible in parts of the area over the next week.

I-495 in Delaware Closed for Fatal Crash

Interstate 495 in Delaware may remain closed for some time Saturday after one person died in a crash, authorities said.

A tractor trailer struck a broken-down car just after 3 a.m. on the northbound side of the interstate just south of Philadelphia Pike in Claymont, state police said.

The tractor trailer rolled onto its side and struck a guard rail. One person was killed.

The truck was carrying molten sulfur, which did not spill and does not pose a danger to the public, the Claymont Fire Company said. However, about 100 gallons of diesel fuel did spill.

DelDOT warned that the investigation, cleanup and repair of a large section of damaged guardrail could mean the interstate is closed for some time. State Police said there was "no projected time" for re-opening 495.

I-495 northbound is closed between Edgemoor Rd. and Philadelphia Pike and I-495 southbound is closed between Edgemoor Rd. and the Pennsylvania state line, state police said.

Motorists traveling in the area should take I-95 to avoid the crash.

Fans showed up early -- and with their underdog masks on -- to watch the Super Bowl Champion Eagles practice at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday.

Rain couldn't water down their excitement; fans showed up as early as 5:30 a.m., even though the parking lots didn't begin to open to tailgaters until 7 a.m. and gates to the stadium open at 8:30 a.m.

"I know it’s raining but ... the sun’s going to come out and the Eagles are going to practice for us," said Ray Huffman, who traveled from the Poconos to see practice. "It’s amazing."

Fan Maribel Santiago of Wilmington lined up at 3 a.m. for the Eagles Super Bowl parade, so she didn't mind getting out early for Saturday's practice.

Tickets to the second and last public practice were free, but all of them have been snapped up.

"Gotta take the opportunity to come in and hang out with all the Eagles family," Santiago said.

The Eagles' next preseason game will be Thursday. It's a Super Bowl rematch against the Patriots. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on NBC10 and through Watch Live TV Now in the NBC10 app.
