2 Children Die, 12 Hospitalized as Inferno Devours NJ Home

Two children died and at least a dozen other people, half of them firefighters, were taken to hospitals when a raging fire consumed a multi-family home in New Jersey Friday, sending flames from the basement to the roof, authorities said.

The fire broke out at a house on 25th Street in Union City before 9 a.m. and escalated to a five-alarm blaze within an hour, prompting a major emergency response from authorities in multiple counties.

The identities of the victims haven't been released, but authorities said they are not believed to all have been from the same family. A shaken neighbor said she saw children on stretchers and parents in hysterics nearby. The conditions of those hospitalized weren't immediately clear, but some of the victims are thought to be critically hurt, including at least one more child and an adult.

Chopper 4 footage showed an entire side of the multi-story building charred black from heavy fire. The windows looked like smoldering panels of charcoal as smoke billowed from the roof and sides of the house. People were seen gathering on the roofs of neighboring buildings to watch the response unfold.

A cause of the fire is under investigation. The prosecutor's office said to avoid 25th Street near Bergenline and New York avenues.

Suspect Arrested in the Death of Vineland, NJ, Woman

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of a Vineland, New Jersey, woman who disappeared earlier this month.

Dennis Parish, 52, was arrested Thursday evening and charged with the desecration and moving of human remains in the death of Tonya Cook, 32, police said.

Cook's body was found burned and dismembered earlier this month by a passerby.

Friends and family held a vigil Thursday near Banks Road in Lawrence Township, Cumberland County near the location where Cook's body was found, to mourn her.

"She didn't deserve that. And she was a great person, she was really kind," Shaquila Nelson, Cook's cousin, said.

Moments before the vigil, the family received a call from police informing them of the arrest. They held a sign that read, "Justice for Tonya" at the vigil.

"That's somebody's daughter you took. No mother should have to go through that," Ella Scurry, a member of Cook's family, said. "I've seen plenty of killings, heard about plenty of killings, nothing like this."

Parish is being held at Cumberland County Jail. Port Norris police invite anyone with additionally information about Cook's murder to call 856-785-0036 or 856-453-0486.

Drugs in Breast Milk Killed Baby, Mother Charged: DA

The mother of an 11-week-old who died April 2 in Bucks County has been charged with criminal homicide after the district attorney alleged that the newborn died from drugs transmitted through breast milk.

Samantha Whitney Jones, 30, of New Britain Township, is being held on $3 million bail after an initial arraignment Friday.

"An autopsy found that the baby died from a combination of methadone, amphetamine and methamphetamine, allegedly transmitted through Jones' breast milk," the DA's office said in a press release.

The day of the baby's death, R.J., as the newborn is identified in the criminal complaint, was crying about 3 a.m. and Jones woke up, according to the complaint. Too tired to go downstairs and prepare a bottle of formula, Jones allegedly tried breastfeeding R.J.

She told detectives she's not sure if R.J. breastfed as Jones dozed on and off for the next three hours.

About 6 a.m., R.J.'s father and Jones' husband, Vincent McGovern, said he found his wife and son in a separate bedroom, according to the complaint.

He went downstairs, prepared a bottle of formula, then left for work. Jones said she fed the formula to R.J., then put him in his bassinet about 6:30 a.m.

Jones woke up about 7:30 a.m. to find R.J. "pale with bloody mucous coming out of his nose," according to the complaint. Despite CPR attempts, the newborn died at a nearby hospital.

The doctor who performed the autopsy ruled the cause of death a homicide because of the combination of drugs found in the baby's blood. The doctor "advised R.J. ingested the combination of fatal drugs through breast milk," according to the complaint.

Jones allegedly told detectives that she actually began feeding R.J. with formula three days before his death because he wasn't getting enough milk from breast feeding, which caused sleeplessness, the complaint said.

She also allegedly said she had been prescribed methadone for an addiction to pain killers. She allegedly said she was taking the prescription while she was pregnant and at the time of R.J.'s death, the complaint said.

Jones' defense attorney, Lou Busico, argued at the arraignment Friday that R.J.'s death was not intentional, the DA's office said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 23.

UPDATE: Michael White has been charged with murder. For the newest details, click here.

A college student has surrendered to authorities over the stabbing death of a Philadelphia real estate developer during a fight about street traffic.

After hugging his sobbing mother and wiping away his own tears, 20-year-old Michael White walked out of True Gospel Tabernacle Family Church in South Philadelphia Friday evening into the custody of a half-dozen police officers.

White turned himself over to police on allegations he stabbed 37-year-old Sean Schellenger at 17th and Chancellor streets in the city's Rittenhouse section nearly 24 hours before.

Schellenger and two friends were riding in a Mercedes-Benz when they got stuck in traffic near The Warwick Hotel. Police said the men exited the car and got into an argument with another man over the traffic. A scuffle ensued that ended with Schellenger being stabbed in the back, police said. He later died at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

White is a college student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, family says. He was making a food delivery on a bicycle at the time of the altercation, according to police.

White didn't speak to reporters gathered inside the church.

Bishop Ernest McNear, who worked with police to set up the peaceful surrender through a program at the church, said White is remorseful.

"He wanted to do the right thing and the family did too," McNear said. The bishop and other program members said they will meet with White to provide him guidance as the case progresses.

White was taken to Philadelphia Police Headquarters where he will be questioned by homicide detectives. Charges have not yet been filed.

Schellenger was chief executive officer of Streamline, a real estate company in Philadelphia. The company's chief operating officer, Mike Stillwell, told NBC10 in an email, that he worked side-by-side with Schellenger for a decade.

"For 10 years, I spent everyday with him: during work, after work, weekends, and every family vacation I had over the last 5 years sean was there," Stillwell said. "Now, he is gone."

Oh Canada! Mayor Kenney Heads to Québec City to Talk Trade

President Trump isn’t the only U.S. elected official travelling abroad and talking international trade this week.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney headed to Québec City, Canada on Saturday for an international business trip aimed at building city-to-city relationships and attracting companies to invest in and develop trade.

“As the global economy continues to shift, it is essential that Philadelphia explore prospects outside of the United States," he said. "Given the number of existing ties between our city and Canada, including trade partnerships and shared industry strengths, I am encouraged by the opportunities that could materialize from this trip."

Kenney is being accompanied by city officials with the Commence Department. The Philadelphia delegation will meet with local administrative officials, including Québec City Mayor Régis Labeaume, and Canadian leaders in technology and education, according to a press release from the mayor's office.

The Philadelphia delegation also will tour the World Heritage Site of Old Québec, hold pitch secessions with businesses and attend a round table event at Bentley Systems, a software development company with offices in both Québec and Philadelphia.

“Canada has long been a strong partner, not just to the United States, but for our city and region in particular,” Kenney said. “I look forward to meeting with Québec City’s mayor, Régis Labeaume, to learn more about how we can strengthen our existing relationship.”

Former Philadelphia mayors have conducted trade trips similar to Kenney’s trip to Canada. Mayor Michael Nutter traveled to Israel, Germany, Mexico, and the U.K. to meet with companies interested in establishing offices in the U.S. and to forage relationships between Philadelphia and international cities.

Before taking office, Kenney was critical of Nutter’s international travels. But as mayor, he has also spent time abroad to promote Philadelphia. Last year, he visited Iceland to celebrate the inaugural flight between Philadelphia and Reykjavik.

After their stay in Québec City, members from the Department of Commerce will continue to Montreal. The city estimated the trip will cost less than $15,000. It will be paid for using city funds.

A Delaware woman is accused of stealing and burning a pro-police flag honoring a fallen state trooper.

Catherine Iocco, 21, of Wilmington, was charged with theft, criminal mischief, and related traffic violations.

On Friday, around 5:15 p.m., Delaware State Police received a report that a "thin blue line" flag was stolen from Nassau Bridge on Coastal Highway north of Lewes. The owner of the flag told police he mounted it Tuesday morning to honor Delaware State Trooper William F. Matt, who recently passed away.

A witness told police a woman in a black Chevrolet pulled over on the left shoulder near the bridge median and grabbed the flag before going back into her vehicle. The witness also reported the woman was using her cell phone as she drove away.

The witness gave police a vehicle description and tag number, which were used to locate the woman in Milton, Delaware. Police identified Iocco as the suspect and she was arrested without incident.

The flag, however, was unable to be returned to its owner because Iocco allegedly burned it, police said.

Iocco was arraigned and released on $275 unsecured bond.

A Swiftie couple got engaged Friday night in front of Taylor Swift during a Philadelphia performance of her Reputation Tour.

The couple, Anthony and Stephanie, met Swift at a meet and greet in the Rep Room, according to a Twitter account dedicated to the proposal. There, Anthony got down on one knee and popped the question, eliciting a jaw-dropping reaction from both his girlfriend and the pop-singer.

The couple told Swift that they began their relationship in 2013 at a Red Tour show in Philadelphia and that her music played an important role in their relationship.

A Pennsylvania man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle after walking out a car wreck in Delaware early Saturday morning.

The 33-year-old man was driving a 2000 Toyota Avalon at 4:17 a.m. on the ramp from I-495 southbound onto the ramp to I-295. Police say the driver didn’t remain in the travel lane and the left front corner of the vehicle struck the barrier.

The impact caused the vehicle to swerve across the roadway onto a grassy area, flip and strike a tree. The driver then got out the vehicle and walked back onto the travel lane of the I-295 ramp while making a phone call, police said. He was then struck and killed by another vehicle which fled the scene. Police have not yet revealed his identity.

Two passengers who were inside the Toyota Avalon were taken to Christiana Hospital and treated for minor injuries they suffered during the initial crash.

The hit-and-run vehicle was described as a small and dark sports car, possibly a Honda Civic.

The I-295 ramp was closed for about three hours while police investigated the crash. If you have any information, please call Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit, Master Corporal J. Aube at 302-365-8483.

An investigation is underway after police shot and killed a man in Vineland, New Jersey Saturday morning.

Vineland Police were called to West Wood Street between Boulevard and 4th Street around 11:20 a.m. for a report of a man acting suspiciously. When they arrived they found a man standing on the front porch of a home.

An encounter between the officers and the man lasted for several minutes. At some point the officers shot and killed the man, according to police. Investigators have not yet revealed whether the man was armed or what led to the shooting. They also have not yet revealed the man’s identity.

Video obtained by NBC10 shows multiple officers, some with their guns drawn, lined up on Wood Street near a shirtless man standing in a yard.

“Walking back and forth, pacing back and forth,” Ryonna Maven, a witness, said. “I’m sure he was paranoid. Big guns in his face.”

Witnesses said the confrontation lasted for more than ten minutes and the man appeared to have a water bottle in his hand. One witness said the man told police he wasn’t going to give himself up.

“The guy came around the car and he came toward them and they shot him three times,” Christopher Cueves, another witness, told NBC10.

Cueves said he was traumatized by the shooting.

“Very difficult especially when you see blood splatter,” he said.

Jose Pagan, another witness, said he had met the man who was killed several times.

“This is very tragic and I want to send my condolences to the family,” Pagan said.

The Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident. If you have any information, please call Det. Joseph Lowry of the CCPO at 856-453-0486 x11197.
