Fire Roars Through NJ Strip Mall, Destroys 5 Businesses

A fast-moving fire that destroyed five businesses at a New Jersey strip mall has been deemed suspicious.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced the finding Monday, several hours after the fire broke out at the Ocean National Plaza on Route 9 south in Toms River. But an office spokesman declined further comment, saying only that the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The blaze, which was reported around 12:10 a.m. Monday, apparently started in a dry cleaning business and soon spread to the other stores.

Toms River police say three restaurants were among the businesses destroyed in the blaze, which sent flames shooting high into the sky. It was fought for several hours by dozens of firefighters from Toms River and neighboring towns.

Fearful Woman Calls 911 Moments Before She Is Killed in Car

A mother is believed to have called 9-1-1 saying she feared for her life moments before she was killed inside her car on the side of a Bucks County road Monday morning.

The woman, identified by police as Teresa Priestley, made the emergency call at 6:47 a.m. Monday saying that her former boyfriend was going to kill her, Bensalem police director of public safety Fred Harran said.

Less than a minute later, another 9-1-1 call was made to report a car crash along Hulmeville Road, Harran said.

Police arrived moments later and the 43-year-old woman was pronounced dead from multiple stab wounds at the scene.

A man in a gray shirt was seen running from the scene, Harran said. Police went to a nearby apartment where the woman lived with her two children but the person of interest — later identified as 45-year-old William Table — wasn't found.

Priestley had recently separated from Table and she had just changed the locks to the apartment Sunday, Harran said.

"She was taking all the necessary steps to separate from this individual," Harran said.

Hulmeville Road was closed as police searched for Table. Residents near the scene were evacuated as a precaution, but were able to return home by late morning.

"He's not coming here and killing this woman on a Monday morning and thinking he can get away with it," Harran said. "He will be in jail shortly."

Table is considered armed and dangerous and could be operating at 2008 silver Chevy Trailblazer with license plate KCT-9437, police said. He could be on his way to Easton, Pennsylvania.

Anyone with information on Table's whereabouts is asked to call police at 215-633-3719. If you spot him, call 9-1-1.

Penn Museum's Famous Sphinx Gallery Goes Into Hiding

The largest Egyptian Sphinx in the western hemisphere is officially closed to the public for the next few years.

The project at the Penn Museum in Philadelphia's University City officially began on Monday, ending the nearly century-long run of public visits to the red sphinx and the entire gallery. While the third floor Egypt Gallery remains open to guests, the exhibit’s main attraction will not be included in that section.

The renovations will include a new HVAC system, improved exhibit infrastructure and visitor amenities, museum officials said.

In addition to the construction, the overhaul of the galleries allows much needed conservation time for many of the artifacts.

Since being installed in 1926, "some of the pieces have received no major conservation attention since then," head conservator Lynn Grant told NBC10.

Over the last few weeks, the Penn Museum encouraged fans to say goodbyes, for now. This past weekend, they hosted a "See You Later" event in which visitors could take a free professional photograph in front of the Sphinx.

Visit the Penn Museum website to find out more information about the project.

Police K-9 Leads Charge to Locate Child With Autism in Woods

A Delaware police K-9 led a successful search for a missing autistic child this weekend.

On Saturday, New Castle County police were called by a woman claiming her 7-year-old son had not been seen for 15 minutes, and may have wandered into the woods.

Soon after arriving at the family's home on East Richards Lane in Newark, New Castle County police K-9 Ace and his handler began to follow a trail of footprints into the woods.

The search team came across a couple during their quest who had found a pair of shoes and were able to match a description of the missing boy, police said. Using the shoes, Ace was able to pick up a stronger scent and narrow the exploration.

After some time, Ace and his handler spotted the boy running across a wooden bridge.

Although he was hesitant at first, the boy became comfortable by petting Ace and eventually accepted a piggy back ride from one of the searching officers.

"I held onto the dog. I asked him to hold onto the back harness...and said 'Hey! Do you want to walk my dog by the harness?' He walked him. Ace was fine the whole time. The boy walked with us, he gained trust with us," New Castle County police Cpl. Cory Tanyer said.

He was found close to a mile from his home and returned without any injuries.

A Pennsylvania Game Commission employee driving a bulldozer accidentally ran over a man who was fleeing from police on state game lands in Berks County, according to investigators.

The employee was operating the bulldozer in the area of Snyder School and S. Garfield roads in Penn Township around 10 a.m. Monday when he spotted a car parked off the road in a field. Bernville police were then called to the scene.

Police say the arriving officers spotted two men who came out of a thick underbrush and then fled on foot. One of the men was captured and taken into custody by the Bernville Police Chief while the second man escaped.

Pennsylvania State Police and PA Game Commission resources then arrived at the area around 11 a.m. A Pennsylvania State Police helicopter then spotted the second man in thick underbrush but then lost sight of him after attempts to hail him were unsuccessful, officials said.

The helicopter pilot then gave directions to the employee on the bulldozer as they continued to search for the second man. A State Trooper was also on the bulldozer as it drove through the thick underbrush. They then stopped the bulldozer and the second man was found dead underneath the back of the vehicle, officials said.

The first man was taken into custody and will be charged with various drug offenses as well as trespassing, police said. The man who died has not yet been identified.

Del. Church Group Stranded in Haiti Amid Protests

Members of a Delaware church on a mission trip are among the hundreds of Americans stranded in Haiti amid violent protests over rising gas prices.

Pastor Roger Frederick of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Bear, Delaware and a group of 15 children and four adults traveled to Haiti for a week-long service mission.

During their stay, Haiti’s government announced an increase in gasoline prices in which a liter of regular gas would cost nearly $5. The announcement sparked violent protests as people reportedly burned tires and vandalized businesses in Haiti’s capital. At least three people were killed.

Police also say the bodies of four people were found Sunday in the streets of the Delmas district, though they didn’t say if their deaths were related to the protests.

With the situation still chaotic, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince on Sunday warned U.S. citizens to shelter in place.

“They were burning tires in the streets and they couldn’t travel safely,” Pastor Paul Owens of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, said. “I guess the embassy said stay in place, be safe where you’re at. Don’t try to go out.”

Passengers traveling to and from Haiti from the United States are on standby, as some airlines have canceled flights due to the violence. Pastor Roger’s group is currently hunkered down in a compound.

“Everybody is doing well,” Pastor Roger said. “We are taking care of each other.”

While the group remains in good spirits, their loved ones back home are nervous and anxious for them to return. Pastor Roger’s wife Carolyn Frederick hopes her husband and the entire group will be back by Wednesday.

“They understand the situation,” she said. “They know God is in control, he’s got this and that they trust they’re going to see their families.”

Fired Starbucks Employee Denies Mocking Man's Stutter

A former Starbucks employee who was fired after being accused of mocking a customer's stutter to his face and in writing on his coffee cup is speaking out and telling his side of the story.

"I don't like seeing my son see me fail," the 25-year-old man, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10. "I feel like a failure to my kids because of this."

Starbucks announced Wednesday that the worker was no longer employed following an investigation into the June 27th encounter at the Starbucks' café on 34th and Walnut streets in Philadelphia .

During the incident, Sam, a 28-year-old University of Pennsylvania graduate student, stuttered while giving his name during a coffee order and the barista replied: "Okay, S-S-S-Sam," according to the man's friend, Tan Lekwijit.

Lekwijit said the mockery continued when Sam received his coffee and saw the name the barista wrote on the cup.

“His name on the cup was written as 'SSSAM,' which was disrespectful,” Lekwijit said.

According to Lekwijit, Sam wrote an email to Starbucks Customer Service after the incident. Lekwijit said Starbucks responded via email, apologizing that he “felt disrespected” for the way his name was written. He also said they offered Sam $5.

“Clearly, Starbucks missed the point. It was about how you treat people with speech impairments, not how you write names,” Lekwijit said.

After Lekwijit posted a photo of the coffee cup and recounted what happened on Facebook, Starbucks took further action and later announced they directly apologized to Sam and also fired the barista.

The former employee claims he never made fun of Sam. He also told NBC10 he has a minor facial deformity and a lisp and has gone through his own emotional struggles because of it.

"I contemplated on my life," the man said. "What's my purpose here now? Just to be someone's Guinea pig. Just to be someone's laughing stock."

The man said he feels "terribly" about the incident and called it a "big misunderstanding." He claims broken keys on the computer were to blame for the multiple "S' letters on the cup and that he wasn't mocking Sam.

"I'm sorry you felt that way," the man said. "But let it be known I'm not that guy. I'm sorry."

A spokesperson for Starbucks did not want to comment further on the incident but wrote, "We want our stores to serve as a welcoming place for everyone who visits and strive to ensure our partners provide a positive experience. We have no tolerance for this type of behavior."

NBC10 reached out to Sam and Lekwijit for a response to the fired barista's comments. We have not heard back from them.

The controversy unfolded only a few months after Starbucks came under fire when a manager at the Rittenhouse Square location called police on two black men who were waiting for a colleague but did not make a purchase.

Viral video of the arrest led to national outrage as well as major policy changes for Starbucks. The company closed locations to provide unconscious bias training to all employees and enacted a new policy that allows anyone to sit in its cafés or use its restrooms — even if they don't purchase anything.
