The Oval+ to Expand Park Space Into the Ben Franklin Parkway

The Benjamin Franklin Parkway will feature a whole lot more park space this summer as the city expands its seasonal offerings at Eakins Oval into new, protected space on the street.

The project is called The Oval+. July 5 through August 26, the outbound outer lanes of the Parkway will be closed between 20th Street and Art Museum Drive to create additional space for walkers and bikers and to make way for large-scale mural installations.

The idea for expanding the seasonal park beyond the perimeter of Eakins Oval came after the popularity of recent events and murals on the Oval. More than 40 percent of visitors requested more family-friendly activities, officials from the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation department said.

Partial road closures will also address ongoing safety concerns. In the past, people have expressed concerns about crossing multiple lanes of traffic, especially with small children, to reach the summer events in Eakins Oval.

“This year, we’re making The Oval more family-friendly than ever before,” Mayor Jim Kenney said.

Since 2013, a partnership between the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department has installed seasonal, summer parks and hosted community events in the eight acres of Eakins Oval.

Each closed intersection of road will feature a large-scale mural highlighting the Parkway as a unifying element between Fairmount Park and Philly’s core.

Murals will feature scenes including kayaks on the Schuylkill and the towers of Center City representing the transition from city to park. Mural Arts Philadelphia and design and illustration studio The Heads of State will work together to design and install the murals.

“We are so excited to expand The Oval+ this year, with an additional 22,000 square feet of artwork,” Jane Golden, executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, said. “We are honored to be a partner once again in this massive and inspiring undertaking.”

In addition to the mural installation, the expanded space will feature public furniture, a 800 square foot sandbox and Mr. Mister, a misting pavilion intended to help visitors cool off on hot summer days.

The park opens July 20 and will remain active until August 19. During these four weeks, events will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

The Eakins Tavern beer garden will return along with a rotating line up of food trucks.

Officials from both the Fairmount Conservancy and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation are excited about opening the expanded space.

“This year’s expansion of the Oval+ will not just make the Parkway more accessible, it will also invite people to interact with the Parkway in ways they’ve never been able to before,” said Jamie Gauthier, Executive Director of Fairmount Park Conservancy. “We’re excited to see how residents and visitors alike use this seasonal gem.”

Bucks Co. Water Main Break: Sesame Place Closes Again

Closures centered around a Bucks County water main break entered a second day Friday as officials urged people to boil water.

The main broke along Woodburne Road between East Lincoln Highway and Maple Avenue (Route 213) in Middletown Township before noon, LevittownNow.com reported.

Both Sesame Place and the Oxford Valley Mall closed for the rest of Thursday due to the break. The mall planned to reopen Friday at 10 a.m. while Sesame Place was unable to open Friday.

"We apologize for any inconvenience," Sesame Place tweeted. They urged guests with tickets or in-park amenities for Friday to visit their website for information.

Crews focused clean-up efforts on the parking lot of a nearby TD Bank location. It took crews hours to shut down water service to the broken main, the Bucks County Water Service Advisory said late Thursday.

Some customers had little or no water pressure, BCWSA said.

They issued a boil water notice for these areas Friday:

  • East Lincoln Highway between I-95 and Oxford Valley Road
  • Route 213/Maple Avenue between Flowers Mill Road and East Lincoln Highway
  • Woodbourne Road between East Lincoln Highway and Third Street

"Customers outside these areas may notice discolored water, however that is not an indication that they need to boil their water," BCWSA said.

No word yet when the area will return to normal.

Plan to leave some extra time if you’re planning on taking an evening cruise on Interstate 76 next week.

Temporary overnight lane closures are scheduled for the Schuylkill Expressway between the Blue Route (Interstate 476) and the Belmont/Green Lane interchanges in Montgomery County as the state continues a project to repair large traffic signs throughout Philadelphia and Montgomery counties.

Lanes will be closed at 10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights until 5 a.m. the following mornings, weather permitting.

The repairs are a part of a more than $2-million federally-funded project to repair large traffic signs, PennDOT said.

Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in October, but until then drivers can find an updated list of road closures and scheduled road maintenance for the Philadelphia region by checking out the District Six Traffic Bulletin.

A minivan carrying a family of six collided head-on with a work truck that veered into opposite traffic along a busy Delaware highway Friday afternoon. The crash killed four children and one adult, state police said.

Four other people — including another adult in the minivan — were injured.

State police Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said the brown pickup truck was traveling southbound on Delaware Route 1 through Townsend when it drifted off the road, through the grassy median and into northbound traffic.

The truck struck one car, injuring the driver, before slamming into the white-colored minivan.

Four children and a parent in the minivan died in the vehicle, police said. Another adult was seriously injured and remains hospitalized.

Jaffe said the family is from New Jersey. The victim's names and ages were not immediately available.

"It’s certainly heartbreaking as you can imagine, those of us that have families and children, I mean, I feel so bad for this family. I can’t imagine what they’re going through," Jaffe said.

The work truck driver and his passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The truck is owned by Aledak Metalworks, Inc. headquartered in East New Market, Maryland, which is about 65 miles southwest from the crash scene.

Route 1 — the main route connecting popular beach towns like Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach with the rest of the state — was shut down for miles following the crash that happened at 3:47 p.m. Friday near Pine Tree Road.

Drivers stuck behind the crash were either turned around or diverted onto side-streets.

The road's northbound lanes remained closed until 9 p.m. Friday night as accident investigators continue to probe the crash.
