Penn State Walk-On Player Gets Scholarship Surprise

Huddling up after practice is a ritual for almost every athletic team, and it’s the same for Penn State Football.

But earlier this week, the huddle turned into a celebration as head coach James Franklin surprised Kyle Vasey, fifth-year senior snapper, with a scholarship. NBC Sports posted this video Tuesday afternoon on Instagram just moments after the exciting moment:

“Who’s working jobs right now?” Franklin asked.

Several players raised their hands, but Franklin focused on Vasey, who had walked on four years ago.

“Bar back and bouncer at Bar Bleu,” Vasey responded as Franklin directed his attention to him.

“What days of the week?” the head coach asked.

“Four or five days, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.,” Vasey answered.

Franklin then asked how many hours a week he was working, and Vasey said 25 to 30.

“Quit, you’re on full scholarship!” Franklin announced as he turned away in preparation for the celebration that was about to happen.

The players, still sweating from their practice, reacted quickly with jubilation and support for the hard-working senior from Hawley, Pennsylvania.

Vasey has become an important leader for the Nittany Lions, as the snapper played a part in every field goal and extra-point attempt last season.

Shop-Vac Blamed for Deadly Bensalem Gas Station Explosion

A Shop-Vac being used to suck up water next to an underground gas tank at a Bensalem, Pennsylvania, gas station caused a catastrophic explosion that killed one man and critically injured another.

Bensalem Fire-Rescue officials said late Thursday that the Tuesday afternoon explosion was an accident.

Joe Vigilante, who co-owned the Liberty Gas station along 1200 block of Bristol Pike, was killed in the blast that was so strong it registered on a seismic detector nearly 20 miles away at Temple University in North Philadelphia.

Part-time worker Frank Tomaselli, 63, suffered burns across 45 percent of his body in the explosion. He remains in critical condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Burn Unit.

Tomaselli's partner, Shirley Coates, said she's concerned he will not survive.

Investigators said Vigilante was using the Shop-Vac in an underground vault next to three 8,000 to 12,000 gallon tanks when either the motor or electricity feeding the vacuum ignited gasoline fumes.

The blast blew apart the concrete above and sent a fireball shooting high into the air, according to witnesses.

Vigilante's body was trapped underground for 12 hours before firefighters were able to safely recover his remains.

'Domestic Terrorism': New Mysterious Blast Worries Neighbors

0

State police, the FBI and ATF are investigating an explosion in an upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania, field which is the latest in a string of mysterious blasts in the area.

Thursday's explosion happened off Brick Tavern Road in Milford Township when a John Deere tractor rolled over some type of device while mowing grass, neighbors told NBC10.

It's the latest in a series of explosions that have left craters and rattled nerves throughout upper Bucks County and lower Lehigh County. More than 20 explosions have been reported since early April in Milford Township, Springfield, Richandtown and Nockamixon.

Nockamixon Township resident Nick Zangli found a foot deep hole along Lonley Cottage Road shortly after hearing a blast at his home.

"That's not a natural hole," Zangli said in May tracing his fingers around the edge of the crater as he showed off a picture of it.

Thursday's blast is the first time one was reported during the day. Most are said to have been heard between 1 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

"This is terrorism because everyone around here worries every night," Gary Rosenberger said Thursday.

Melissa Pfistner lives across the street from where the explosion happened. Police told her to keep her three kids away from tall grass.

"The police guys just said keep them near the area where it's mowed because they think [devices] could be in areas where there's long grass," she said.

Spokespersons with the ATF and FBI field offices in Philadelphia confirmed they were assisting state police in investigating this latest blast. SkyForce10 was over the scene Thursday evening and investigators could be seen collecting and analyzing evidence.

Pennsylvania State Police has been unavailable for comment.

"I mean if it was kids you'd think somebody would have talked and they'd have been caught already." Rosenberger said.

"I hope they catch the people and charge them with domestic terrorism because that's what it is."
