Teammates Play to Honor 14-Year-Old Boy Who Died

A young athlete collapsed and died while walking to a friend’s house Friday, the day before he was set to start at 3rd base for his baseball team. Coaches of the 14-year-old boy initially canceled the game, but his teammates wanted to play in his honor.

Nadir King was walking to the Sewell, N.J. home of a friend, who became worried when Nadir never arrived. The Chestnut Ridge 8th grader was found lying in the grass along the street.

Stanley King, the 14-year-old boy’s father, and others performed CPR on Nadir until paramedics arrived.

“We were unsuccessful,” said Stanley, as he sat alongside his wife, Sharon.

Authorities, unsure of what caused his death, will be testing tissue samples.

His death was a shock to his teammates, who played baseball with Nadir as part of the Washington Township Minutemen.

“I love him and my prayers to his family,” Nick DeAngelis, his teammate, said while holding back tears.

The Minutemen’s coach, Larry Meglino, has been watching Nadir – the fastest kid on the team -- play since he was 9-years-old.

“When we would warm up, he’d be the first one to want to run around the whole field,” Meglino said. “If it was quiet in the dugout, he would say something and get everybody to laugh. It would put it in perspective that they are just kids having fun.”

Still stunned by the news of Nadir’s death, Meglino began calling the parents of the rest of the boys on the team to let them know what happened and that the game Saturday would be canceled.

“But after talking with the team, most of them wanted to play for him,” he said. “It is their way of doing what they can to help the situation.”

“Sitting home not doing anything might weigh on them more than coming out and actually playing and contributing in a way,” Meglino added.

The South Jersey Braves, the opposing team, agreed to move the game -- originally scheduled to be played at their field – to the Minutemen’s turf.

The players painted 16 – Nadir’s jersey number -- on their faces in honor of their friend.

“We're flattered that the team, the coaches and even the opposing team would choose to honor Nadir in this fashion,” Stanley said.

Meglino says he already ordered patches displaying Nadir’s initials that all 200 players on the Washington Township travel teams will wear on their uniforms. Jerseys with the number 16 are also on the way for each one of Nadir’s teammates, he said.

“That was his number and we’ll wear them every Sunday,” Meglino said.

The Minutemen defeated the Braves, winning by one run.

The final score was 10 to nine, but halfway through the game the scoreboard froze.

The sign showed the score tied at 16.

The team is set to play again today at the Washington Township baseball complex starting at 3 p.m.

A Georgia man will face DUI charges in a crash that killed one person and injured another.

Police say Gabriel Sanchez, 20, of Rocky Face, Georgia, was driving in the southbound lanes on I-95 in South Philadelphia on Sunday shortly before 3 a.m.

As he was driving, Sanchez somehow lost control of his red 2007 Nissan Armada. The vehicle struck the rear of a white 2007 Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling in the right lane.

The Jetta struck the right concrete barrier before coming to a final stop. Police say Sanchez's vehicle continued south and then came to a stop in the middle lane.

The driver of the Jetta, identified as 25-year-old Aaron Carbajal of Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sanchez's passenger, who has not yet been identified, was injured in the crash and taken to the hospital where he is in critical condition.

Police say neither Sanchez nor his passenger had a seat belt on during the time of the accident. Police also say Sanchez displayed several indicators that he was intoxicated. Charges will be filed against him pending approval, according to investigators.

Southbound lanes were shutdown at Exit 17 for Broad Street and Exit 19 for Packer Avenue for several hours after the crash. They later reopened shortly after 8 a.m.

Elderly Couple Gets Married

Newlyweds Prove Love Has No Age Limit

It began as a friendship, a man and a woman with similar experiences and common interests. Barbara Kanas was a retired nurse from Philadelphia who had lost her husband to Parkinson’s disease. Lenny Raffeo was a former Montgomery County businessman who lost his wife to Parkinson’s as well.

The two met six years ago when they moved into the Elm Terrace Gardens Continuing Care Retirement Community in Lansdale. From the moment they met, Barbara made an immediate impression on Lenny.

“She reminded me of my wife who passed away,” Lenny said. “Same mannerisms, same sweetness and kindness.”

As for Barbara, what she first noticed about Lenny was his compassion.

“He went around and helped everybody,” Barbara said. “He encouraged people and was so nice to everyone, including me. I never really thought too much about him except he was a nice and friendly fella.”

The two remained friends until a year and a half ago, when Lenny said the words that would change everything.

“I just want you to know that you’re the one,” Lenny told her. “I’ve been watching you all along.”

For Barbara, Lenny’s words made her realize her own feelings.

“We had a chorus that he encouraged me to lead for a Christmas program,” Barbara said. “He sang a solo and a friend of mine took a picture of him and gave it to me. I kept that picture by my side the whole year, not realizing that he was really interested in me until he said that.”

From that moment, the relationship progressed until the couple decided to take the next step.

“One day he said we should really consider getting married,” Barbara said.

Barbara is 81-years-old. Lenny is 87. Yet neither had any doubts that it was the right thing to do.

“We really believe that God brought us together,” Barbara said.

At first, the couple only wanted a small wedding with their families. That changed however, once the staff and residents at Elm Terrace learned the news.

Traci Connelly, the PR Director as well as staff members Toni Allebach and Marissa Filippucci  planned the wedding and called on local businesses to lend a helping hand.

Koehler’s Jewelers provided the engraved wedding bands, the Rhoads Garden made the bouquet and corsages while the Distelfink Bakery made a 4-tiered wedding cake.

Barbara and Lenny got married on Saturday during an extravagant ceremony at Elm Terrace.

“It was unbelievable,” Barbara said. “Everybody here was so excited. We were sitting and reading cards that were given to us and it’s just amazing. The thoughts and wishes of everybody here.”

The newlyweds plan to visit Niagara Falls in June for their honeymoon. After that, they will continue their new lives together.

“I know we’re going to be happy for the rest of our lives,” Lenny said. “Being together will give us longevity. We are really meant for each other, there’s no doubt about it. We’re one person.”
