Meek Mill Cancels White House Visit to Talk Prison Reform

Rapper Meek Mill has backed out of a visit to the White House that was planned for Friday to discuss prison reform, he said in a statement.

Mill, who has become a spokesman for the movement against mass incarceration after his monthslong imprisonment for a probation violation, was set to take part in a "Prison Reform Summit." The event is still being held Friday morning, starting at 10:45 a.m. with remarks by President Donald Trump, according to the White House.

It is unclear who else is attending the summit.

Mill, whose real name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, was born and grew up in North Philadelphia. After his release on bail last month following a prolonged court battle, he has remained a voice for prison and criminal justice reform.

In a statement, however, he said he backed out of the White House summit because of a concern that too much attention would have been on personalities instead of on the issues.

"I was originally scheduled to be part of a panel on Prison Reform at the White House to help shed light on the issues within the system. Unfortunately, the focus turned to the President and myself which concerned me that it might take away from creating a positive result from today’s discussions," Mill said in a statement. "As a result, I decided not to attend, so that the focus would be solely on fixing our prison system. Most importantly, I remain fully committed to improving our criminal justice system."

Mill's backing out comes one day after the White House announced that the Philadelphia Eagles would be invited June 5 to honor their Super Bowl title.

But some Eagles, including one of the team's leaders, Malcolm Jenkins, said they would not attend.

"At this point, I'm not interested in any discussions on anything right now just with the climate that's been going on in The White House," Jenkins told NBC10 hours after the White House's announcement.

Jenkins is taking a prominent national role in criminal justice reform. He told NBC10 in an exclusive interview earlier in May that he was going to take part in certain district attorney political races across the country throughout 2018.

"When Larry Krasner was up for election, one of the things we did was around raising awareness about what your DA does and how much the public knows that," Jenkins said. "What Krasner has done is encouraging and can be repeated in other areas."

2 Buses Collide at Entrance of Lincoln Tunnel, 32 Hurt

Thirty-two people were hurt when two buses collided at the Manhattan-side entrance of the center tube of the Lincoln Tunnel Friday, an accident that sent all but one of the dozens of victims to the hospital, FDNY officials said.

Port Authority says that one NJ Transit bus rear-ended another in the center tube just before 10 a.m. Eight of the 32 victims had serious injuries, but those were not believed to be life-threatening and the other injuries were minor.

FDNY says that 23 of those injured were transported to Bellevue Hospital, while the eight victims with serious injuries were taken to Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai.

Stephen Russo, FDNY deputy chief for EMS, said that the department used a specialized bus to transport dozens of injured victims at a time to local hospitals in order to not use all the ambulances in the area due to the high number of injuries reported.

According to NJ Transit, both buses originated out of New Jersey — one out of Wayne, the other out of Oradell.

One of the buses had 25 passengers on board, while there were 37 on board the other.

The buses are currently out of the tunnel and on the New York side, NJ Transit says.

Port Authority Police Department is investigating the incident, but says the Lincoln Tunnel is fully operational.

"We're going to conduct investigation which involves reviewing video tape and speaking and taking statements from the drivers and rest of patients," Raymond Bryant, the deputy chief for the Port Authority Police, said.

A boy is dead after he was hit by an SUV along a South Philadelphia street Friday afternoon, police said. The driver then fled the scene.

The crash happened at 10th and Shunk streets just after 3 p.m.

The 11-year-old was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a dark colored SUV, police said.

The boy was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's trauma center where he died about 30 minutes later, police said.

Ashley Dambrosia, a neighbor, said drivers often speed through the neighborhood and at times disregard stop signs.

"People need to pay attention when they're driving. There's kids out here playing," she said.

Police recovered the vehicle a short distance away. The driver turned herself in at the police department's 3rd District a short time later.

Accident investigators have been called to the scene.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

DNC Chairman Perez: Pa. Is 'Ground Zero' in Fight for House

Displaying confidence after this week’s primary election in Pennsylvania, the head of the Democratic National Committee predicted his party could almost triple its share of the state’s Congressional seats in the midterm elections.

"I think Pennsylvania is going to be a real ground zero as we work to take back the U.S. House and, frankly, take back our democracy," DNC chairman Tom Perez said in an interview with NBC10.

Democrats need to gain 23 seats to take control of the House of Representatives.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats started the year with five seats to Republicans’ 13 seats, but Perez suggested his party could flip those numbers in the midterm elections, in part because of the state’s new Congressional map. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court threw out the old map and redrew the district lines under a new map that resulted in multiple districts that are now more favorable to Democrats.

Perez said he saw Democratic enthusiasm in Pennsylvania’s primary election on Tuesday, and called it the "year of the woman" in Pennsylvania because of the seven Democratic women nominated to go onto the general election for congressional races.

"Women have been leading the resistance, women have been stepping up to run for office in remarkable numbers and women have been winning," Perez said.

Of the seven women, four are in the Philadelphia region — Madeleine Dean in the 4th district, Mary Gay Scanlon in the 5th district, Chrissy Houlahan in the 6th district and Susan Wild in the 7th district. Republican Pearl Kim had no primary challenger and goes on to the general election in the 5th district.

Pennsylvania voters will also have a choice in two statewide races this year as two Democrats try to keep their jobs: Gov. Tom Wolf and Sen. Bob Casey.

Heading toward November, Perez said the DNC will offer help to both top-of-ticket and smaller races, and use an "every zipcode strategy" to compete in every county.

He cited the party’s success in Virginia as a model for campaign coordination, saying "we understood and always asked 'Where can we be most helpful?'"
