Sixers Stave Off Elimination, Force Game 5

The Sixers’ season is not over.

They avoided elimination in Game 4 with a 103-92 win over the Celtics to force a Game 5 Wednesday in Boston. The Celtics lead the series, 3-1.

• Brett Brown hadn’t been changing up his lineup and rotations much … until Monday. He started guard T.J. McConnell and moved forward Robert Covington to the bench. McConnell earned increased playing time as a dependable floor leader while Covington has been up and down, fluctuating from three points to 22 and just one in Game 3.

McConnell was ultra aggressive with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and no turnovers in 39 minutes. The crowd responded with a “T-J! T-J!” chant. Any question of McConnell’s role on a playoff team should be answered with this game.

• The Sixers never hit the panic button going into Game 4. Multiple players maintained they would be alright as they took the approach of one quarter at a time.

“We’re OK,” Joel Embiid said at practice Sunday. “We’re good. We know what we’ve got to do.”

• About that anticipation of physicality — 7-foot Joel Embiid and 6-foot Terry Rozier had to be separated during the second quarter. They were issued double techs, then both responded by draining threes.

With 15 points and 13 rebounds, Embiid became the first player to post a double-double in at least six of his first seven postseason games (in the same season) since Chris Paul did it in 2008.

• In an unexpected twist, Ben Simmons (7 for 8) shot better from the line than JJ Redick (0 for 2). Simmons looked eager with his offensive game. He made 6 of 15 field goal attempts and posted a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards.

• Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 20 points and Marcus Morris contributed 17 off the bench.

• The Celtics ran into foul trouble. Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and Morris were whistled for five each. Tatum picked up his third in the second quarter.

• Jimmy Rollins rang the ceremonial pregame bell and sat with Dikembe Mutombo.

Search for Missing Malvern Mother Now Murder Investigation

More than one year has passed since 43-year-old Anna Bronislawa Maciejewska went missing. And friends and family of the Malvern woman won’t stop hunting for answers, despite slowly losing hope of finding her alive.

“She always had a great smile,” friend and former coworker Sharon Grant said. “She took pride in anything she did -- from her new home she built to her son. Everything was hope and happiness.”

A native of Poland, Maciejewska created a full life for herself a world away from her relatives. She was a successful actuary for Voya Financial and mother to a young child who was just 3 years old when his mother disappeared.

She was last seen alive by her husband, Allen Jay Gould, who reported her missing on April 10, 2017, police said.

Since then, what started as a missing persons search has turned into a murder investigation, Pennsylvania State Police told NBC10.

“We are out there looking for her body,” Cpl. Robert Kirby said. “We haven’t ruled out any suspects.”

As officials continue to search for answers, Maciejewska's loved ones have many more questions. She mysteriously canceled a visit to her native Poland in days leading to her disappearance. Then, her father received a happy birthday text in jumbled Polish filled with mistakes she never would have made.

“It wasn’t from her,” Maciejewska's mother, Janina Maciejewska, said via Facetime.

By all accounts, Maciejewska was a meticulous person. She worked in the financial sector for most of her career, and regularly kept in touch with family in Poland and friends in Pennsylvania. She drove her son two hours every week to a Polish school. She also found time to remain active in her book and movie clubs, plus have regular weekly dinners with nearby pals.

So when coworker Sharon Rouse visited Maciejewska’s house after hearing about the disappearance, she was shocked to find her friend’s phone on the table.

“She would not have left her phone,” Rouse told NBC10, adding that Maciejewska stayed in constant touch with her elderly parents and young son.

In the days following her disappearance, officials found Maciejewska’s Audi about two miles from her home. This, combined with the strange text and canceled trip, led investigators to focus on the two weeks before Maciejewska was reported missing.

As the investigation continues to unfold, police want to hear more from her husband.

“We last spoke to [him] two months ago,” Kirby said. “Allen would not provide any useful information.”

NBC10 approached Gould and asked him for comment, but he refused. "Please turn the camera off," Gould said, adding that he wants privacy.

A call to his lawyer was not returned. Police have not named Gould or anyone else as a suspect.

Maciejewska's family in Poland and friends in Pennsylvania have teamed up to keep the search alive. Her brother-in-law Leszek Wronski helped create a $30,000 reward fund for anyone with information that could lead to finding the missing woman. He also acts as the unofficial emissary between the U.S. and Poland, staying in touch with investigators in Chester County and relaying any news to his in-laws in Poland.

As leads slowly fades, the family remains devastated, he told NBC10.

“Especially for mother and father, it’s not getting better. It’s rather worse and worse,” Wronski said. “Time does not help.”

Part of the family’s pain is their strained relationship with Gould. He does not allow the now 5-year-old boy to Skype with his grandparents and canceled a trip to see them, Wronski said.

"We have no contact with Allen, who does not talk to us," Wronski said.

“It’s very strange for us. I have no idea why he behaves like this,” Wronski said. “The future looked quite bright, but not anymore.”

But her loved ones aren't giving up. A Facebook page has been created to finding Maciejewska. There, they share information and remember the woman they dearly miss.

“My heart broke into pieces,” Deb Streeter-Davitt said. “It’s really hard to make sense of everything. I see a lot of anguish.”

Water Main Break Impacts Inside and Outside of Philly Airport: Philadelphia International Airport was without water for several hours Monday due to a water main break that flooded a parking lot. The 24-inch water main broke in one of the airport’s economy lots Monday around 5 p.m., forcing many people to drive and walk through water. There was no water pressure throughout the airport's terminals for several hours due to the break. Staff members distributed hand sanitizers to airport bathrooms while cooking operations at airport restaurants were suspended. Bottled beverages and packaged food were available at various concessions. Antonio Cortes told NBC10 there was no water in the toilets and passengers couldn't go to the bathroom. Crews with the Philadelphia Water Department closed several valves trying to find the one responsible for the break. They were able to contain the break and re-establish water pressure inside the airport nearly three hours later.

E-ZPass Launching on 4 More Ocean Drive Bridges: You can forget the cash when hopping between Jersey Shore towns this summer as E-ZPass is expected to launch on four more bridges along the scenic Ocean Drive in Cape May County within the next month. The Ocean City-Longport Bridge launched E-ZPass April 30, sending relief to those who constantly use the toll bridge for business and leisure. The Middle Thorofare Bridge will launch sometime within the next few days, followed by Grassy Sound around May 14, and Corson's Inlet around May 21. Townsend's Inlet is scheduled to have E-ZPass activated by June 25, but could be available as early as Memorial Day, the Cape May County Bridge Commission said. Bridge officials hope the faster tolling system will help reduce frustrating backups at toll booths. With the tourism picking up for the spring and summer, E-ZPasses will keep things moving quickly by allowing visitors to stop briefly before getting to their destination.

Firefighters rescued two women hanging out of a second floor window after fire broke out in a South Jersey building holding apartments and businesses.

Flames broke out around 1:30 a.m. at 1104 Haddon Avenue in Collingswood.

When firefighters arrived they found two women hanging out of the window, Collingswood Fire Chief Keith Davis said.

Firefighters climbed a ladder and rescued the women. One suffered severe injuries, the other suffered minor injuries, Davis said.

The fire started in the rear of the building and did mostly smoke damage to the apartments.

The hours that fall between 4 in the afternoon and 8 in the evening?

There are a few ways to break those down. It's a full 1/6 of the day, so, yeah, it's a good chunk of time. It's when the sun sets, and work traditionally wraps up, at least for many people, and plenty of us eat supper after 4 and before 8 o'clock.

And if it happens to be Free Cone Day at participating Häagen-Dazs locations?

Many an ice cream aficionado will be queued up, between 4 and 8, all to score that sweet scoop of something rich, creamy and full of spring zing.

Those are the times you'll need to know for the 2018 outing for this super-forever-mondo popular event, one that does see dessert devotees, in notable numbers, joining the lines outside of their local Häagen-Dazs stores for this no-strings-attached giveaway.

Well, there are no strings, but sometimes there are melty ice cream blobs, that get on your hands and pants, but, c'mon: It doesn't seem like full-on ice cream cone enjoyment without a little goopy souvenir at the end of the experience.

The date is Tuesday, May 8, and the list of shops joining in may be found here.

Is there one near you? There is, probably, in the grand scheme of things. (And, when it comes to the important topic of ice cream, "the grand scheme of things" must always be considered.)

So enjoy those magical hours, in the late afternoon, around twilight, as you put your hands on a cone that's holding luscious orb of chocolate or vanilla or you name it.

Just remember to quiz your pals while in line: Where does the umlaut go in the company's name? The first "a" or the second? Stump your friends while you pass the waiting time, but make sure they're facing you and not the store when they answer.

Body Found in Car Registered to NJ Woman Missing Since Last Year, Prosecutors Say

Police have discovered an unidentified body in a car registered to a 24-year-old New Jersey woman who vanished last year.

Shanaya Coley, of Paterson, went missing at the beginning of December in what prosecutors described as a possible abduction. On Sunday morning, police responding to a call reporting an unattended car in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Marion Street in Paterson discovered a gray Nissan Altima registered to Coley, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Officers found a body in the vehicle’s back seat, the prosecutor’s office said. The body was the victim of a homicide and died from puncture and incision wounds, but the medical examiners are still working to identify the body.

Prosecutors said she may have been hurt and abducted from her car. The man who found Coley's car on Sunday told NBC New York the car had been in his apartment building parking lot for months. As the weather got warmer, he started to notice a strange smell he hadn't noticed in the winter, he said.

"The smell was so bad that if you were to walk in front of it, it would have pushed you away," said Wilfredo Morales.

Coley, who has a son who was three years old in December, was last seen near Colonial Avenue in Paterson shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 5. The car discovered on Sunday was parked less than a mile from that location.

Residents at the complex said the car was parked in one of the few spaces not reserved for tenants. But it's not clear who does get to park in those spaces. Friends of Coley were baffled as to how the car could have sat there, with her body in the back, for so long, with no one noticing something amiss.

"I just think it's terrible nobody knew she was back here," said friend Tyshawn Davis. "It just seems so planned. Somebody just knew, they took a lot of time to plan this, this location."

"There's other cars back here, so they are coming home from work and they have to see an unattended vehicle here for so long," he continued. "It was all over the news."

The landlord of the building hung up on News 4 when reached for comment.

Coley’s father previously said that blood and his daughter’s glasses were found in the parking lot of the apartment complex she lived in. Coley had taken out a restraining order against an unknown person prior to her disappearance, he added.

Shanaya's mother, Rachel Martin, said Monday she was grateful to her community.

"It may not have been the way we wanted it to be, but they returned my child to me," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 877-370-PCPO, email tips@passaiccountynj.org or call the Paterson Police Department Detective Bureau at 973-321-1120.

West Chester's Jackie Verna Reaches Top 10 on The Voice

A Pennsylvania girl with a country side, heroic story and an amazing voice. Those are just a few small aspects of what Jackie Verna brings to the stage as she enters the final 10 on NBC's The Voice.

The West Chester singer performed the country song "Love Triangle" by former Voice winner RaeLyn as one of the top 10 Monday evening. Her coach, Adam Levine commended her for finding her “sweet spot” of range and the perfect song. With just a couple weeks left, the Pennsylvania performer has undoubtedly grasped audiences across the nation in her quest to find singing stardom.

Verna was selected for Team Adam during her blind audition when she sang “Peter Pan” by country artist Kelsea Ballerini. Levine was the only judge to slam his buzzer during her performance, with Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys unable to because their teams were already full. Kelly Clarkson was hesitant, and admitted her regret immediately. Levine was ecstatic about his selection, saying, “I have never been more excited about a 1-chair turn in my life.”

Verna was born in small-town suburb Sicklerville, New Jersey, but currently resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of Great Valley high School. In 2012, Verna was severely injured in a car accident when another vehicle t-boned her car. The injuries caused Verna to remain inside for many months, and her plans of moving to Alabama to cheer were put on hold.

During her recovery, Verna began using a keyboard that her aunt gave her to remedy her physical and emotional pain that lingered from the accident. Verna’s love for music, (country in particular) allowed her to transform her feelings and experiences into stories for songs that she began writing.

Verna currently attends Penn State, and has gained confidence from performing at open mics which led her to try out for The Voice.

The Voice airs live on Monday and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC10 with online voting taking place from Monday at 8 p.m. to Tuesday at 12 p.m.

High School Freshman Dies After Collapsing During Gym Class

A high school freshman in New Jersey collapsed during a physical education class Tuesday morning and later died, authorities said.

The 14-year-old boy took ill while on the track at Franklin High School in Somerset just after 9 a.m. He received CPR and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead within about two hours.

"We are providing counseling to our staff and students. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student’s family at this time," the school district said in a statement.
