Meek Mill on 'Dateline' Calls for #JusticeReform

In the nearly two weeks since Meek Mill was released on bail from a state prison in Pennsylvania, the rapper has found little time to himself: He was celebrated courtside at two Philadelphia 76ers games, held a news conference with the governor and state lawmakers, and continued filming an Amazon docuseries chronicling his ongoing journey through the criminal justice system.

How he got there — and the new path he's charting to reform the U.S. prison system and how it treats people of color — were the subject of NBC's "Dateline" special, "Dreams and Nightmares: The Meek Mill Story," which aired on Sunday.

Mill, who also turns 31 on Sunday, sat down for an exclusive in-depth interview with NBC News' Lester Holt after his release from prison on April 24 following an order from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

Temple Student Gunned Down at Off-Campus Apartment: A Temple University junior was killed in a shooting at an off-campus apartment late Saturday night, the university said. The student — identified Sunday by university officials as 21-year-old Daniel Duignam — was shot three times just after 9 p.m. Saturday in his apartment at 17th and Diamond streets in North Philadelphia, police said. Duignam suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach, right arm and face, police said. Paramedics pronounced him dead inside the apartment. Duignam was a third-year business major from Tatamy, Pennsylvania, in Northampton County. He was studying risk management and insurance, according to his LinkedIn profile. The current mayor of Tatamy also confirmed Duignam is the grandson of former Tatamy mayor Luke Duignam. A Temple spokesman said investigators don't believe the shooting was a random act. Romona Scott, a block captain, who lives in the building next door, told NBC10 she didn't hear anything suspicious the night of Duignam's death.

      WHAT YOU MISSED YESTERDAY

Pa. College Receives Terroristic Threat: An eastern Pennsylvania college says the FBI is investigating an online threat against the campus by someone claiming loyalty to the Islamic State. Lafayette College said shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday that "an extensive room-by-room search" of the Easton campus turned up "no malicious or hazardous materials." Officials said someone claiming to be a male student Saturday night threatened an attack with "pipe bombs, pressure cookers and nail bombs," saying his faith had been ridiculed. Lafayette said it was working with police and the FBI to determine the threat's legitimacy. Officials asked students to stay where they were and those off campus to stay away while the threat was assessed. College president Alison Byerly said no lockdown was initiated and students were free to leave buildings if they wished.
While officials did not find any indication that the threat was credible and advised a return to normal operations, the FBI continues to investigate the source of the threat.

'Absolutely Yes' Proposal at Blue Cross Broad Street Run: What's better than the feeling of running a strong race in the Blue Cross Broad Street Run? How about the feeling of seeing your boyfriend on one knee, with a diamond in hand? That's what happened to runner Edith Lewis at the finish line of the 2018 race as she was being interviewed by NBC10's Bill Henley. "I had a great time running today," said Lewis, looking remarkably composed at the end of the 10-mile race. "Great weather. And luckily I trained very well coming into the race so it felt really good coming down Broad Street." Suddenly, a well-dressed man appeared at her shoulder. "Hey baby," he said. "Hi," Lewis said, still focused on Henley. "You know this guy?" Henley asked. "That's my boyfriend," Lewis responded. She barely had the words out before her boyfriend dropped to one knee. "I wanted to know if you would marry me," he said. "Oh, wow," Lewis responded, no longer quite so composed. "Will you marry me?" he asked again. Lewis got out a "yes" before dissolving into repeating, "Oh wow!" The couple embraced and kissed. "Oh my gosh! I wasn't expecting that! Oh wow! Yes, yes!" Lewis said.

Hawaii Volcano Destroys Dozens of Homes, Forces Evacuations: Hawaii's Kilauea volcano destroyed 26 homes and spewed lava hundreds of feet into the air, leaving evacuated residents unsure how long they might be displaced. In revised figures Sunday, Hawaii County officials said another four unspecified structures were covered by lava. Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where molten rock, toxic gas and steam have been bursting through openings in the ground created by the volcano. Some of the more than 1,700 residents who have been evacuated were allowed to briefly return to gather medicine, pets, and other necessities. Officials say residents would be able to do so each day until further notice as authorities monitor which areas are safe.

Plan your commute carefully this week and next. SEPTA continues to complete track repairs after a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed last week in Delaware County.

While this work takes place, the Wilmington/Newark Line will operate on an emergency schedule for weekday and weekend service. Amtrak lines will also be impacted as tracks are taken out of service to accommodate SEPTA.

In order to complete the car cleanup and the track repair work, Amtrak has taken two tracks completely out of service, leaving only two available for both Amtrak and SEPTA trains. This outage will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week and may last for up to four weeks.

During this time, trains will not stop at Highland Avenue or Curtis Park stations and there will be some changes in service patterns.

These repairs will impact the Wilmington/Newark Line for through most of May.

I Can't Breathe: Temple Student Calls 911 After Being Shot

          0

Moments after being shot three times inside his North Philadelphia apartment, a Temple University student called 911 pleading for help.

Daniel Duignam, 21, told an emergency dispatcher that he "couldn't breathe" when he pleaded for help Saturday night, Philadelphia Police Capt. John Ryan said.

When police and paramedics arrived to his apartment on the 1700 block of Diamond Street moments later, Duignam had already died.

Duignam was shot once each in the stomach, right arm, and face during an apparent robbery around 9 p.m. that night, police said.

"We believe it was a robbery. We believe that it was done by somebody he knew," Ryan, the head of the Homicide Unit, said during a news conference Monday morning.

Ryan said there are no signs of forced entry into the apartment, which is part of a former single family rowhome that has been converted into off-campus student housing.

The door was also locked when police arrived and there were no bullet shell casings left in the apartment, Ryan said, adding that either the shooter collected them or that a revolver was used. Police are waiting for ballistics test results to make that determination.

Duignam, a third-year business major at nearby Temple University, did fight the person who shot him, Ryan said. The apartment was ransacked and investigators believe money was taken, but have yet to make a final determination.

Ryan said detectives have yet to identify a suspect, or suspects, in the killing. They are reviewing surveillance video from the area. As is standard in homicide cases, the city is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

It's not clear if anyone else in the apartment building heard the struggle or shooting, but a block captain told NBC10 that Saturday was a quiet night. Many students have already left for summer break.

Duignam had one last final to take before finishing up the school year, Ryan said. He was studying risk management and insurance, according to LinkedIn. A native of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, his grandfather is the former mayor of his hometown, Tatamy.

Ryan described Duignam as a "good kid" with no prior history with police.

E-ZPass Launching on 4 More Ocean Drive Bridges

You can forget the cash when hopping between Jersey Shore towns this summer as E-ZPass is expected to launch four more bridges along the scenic Ocean Drive in Cape May County within the next month.

The Ocean City-Longport Bridge launched E-ZPass April 30, sending relief to those who constantly use the toll brige for business and leisure.

The Middle Thorofare Bridge will launch sometime within the next few days, followed by Grassy Sound around May 14, and Corson's Inlet around May 21. Townsend's Inlet is scheduled to have E-ZPass activated by June 25, but could be available as early as Memorial Day, the Cape May County Bridge Commission said.

Bridge officials hope the faster tolling system will help reduce frustrating backups at toll booths. With the tourism picking up for the spring and summer, E-ZPasses will keep things moving quickly by allowing visitors to stop briefly before getting to their destination.

As of now, the toll rates are not scheduled to change from their $1.50 amount, and tickets will still be accepted through the summer. After that, the Commission plans to phase in an E-ZPass discount system.

Camden Police Raise Money for Officer Caring for Sick Wife

          $

          0

Tony Forney loves being a Camden police officer.

“It’s who I am,” Forney said. “All my morals, the good person I am, wanting to do good for others.”

But Forney, 33, is off the street and fighting something tougher than he’s ever faced while on duty. He’s taking care of his sick wife and his three children, all under the age of 5.

Forney’s wife Ronni, 31, is suffering from deteriorating conditions from lupus and MS. Her illness forced her to leave her job and at this point she’s not strong enough to pick up her children.

“She can’t pick the babies up and they don’t understand,” Forney said. “That’s the stigma that comes with these autoimmune diseases. You don’t look sick but [she really feels it.]

Forney and his family are not only feeling emotional distress, but also financial.

“The medical bills are astronomical,” he said. “And just the loss of income.”

Knowing their brother was in need, other Camden police officers decided to step up.

“He’s at the lower end of our salary scale,” Sgt. Rick Kunkel, President of the Camden FOP Lodge 218, said. “He’s been on for two years but he’s still at the very low end where he’s not really making enough money to support a household.”

The FOP created a GoFundMe page to help Officer Forney with medical funds. So far they've raised more than $10,000 of their $15,000 goal. Members of the Camden FOP are also donating their time.

“Once he uses all his leave time, we can start to donate time to him so he can stay out for an extended period of time,” Sgt. Kunkel said.

Forney’s children refer to him as “Officer Daddy,” a name that appears on his St. Michael necklace.

“The St. Michael has, ‘To officer daddy, we love you,’” Forney said. “And then it’s the kids’ names.”

With his second family coming to his aid, Officer Forney is incredibly grateful.

“It’s left us speechless,” he said. “She can’t even believe that there are people out there with such big hearts. I try to explain to her, this is family. This is police.”

Stormy Daniels Performing in Philly Club the Next 2 Nights

Stormy Daniels, the porn star who has entangled Donald Trump's presidency in accusations of infidelity, bullying and a hushed payoff, will take the stage at a Northeast Philadelphia strip club this week.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, will perform Monday and Tuesday at The Penthouse Club on Castor Avenue in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section. She's visiting to promote a special "Pet of the Century Collector's Edition" issue of Penthouse, the adult magazine the club is named after, dedicated to her.

The adult performer's Philadelphia visit comes on the heels of a surprise appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. In a skit during the show's cold open, Daniels chats by phone with President Trump, as played by Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin's Trump tries to smooth things over with Daniels, who has spoken extensively about her alleged relationship with Trump before he became president, in an effort to resolve the distraction she has caused to his administration.

"Sorry, Donald, it’s too late for that," Daniels said in the skit. "I know you don’t believe in climate change, but a storm’s a-comin', baby."

Trump has repeatedly denied a relationship with Daniels. Daniels, however, was paid $130,000 through his attorney, Michael Cohen, as part of a settlement in exchange for her silence. That payment, made two weeks before the 2016 presidential election, has come under intense scrutiny from elected officials and journalists about whether Cohen or Trump violated campaign finance laws.

Daniels will perform two shows a night in Philly — once at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. — and sign issues of the magazine. Cover is $10 at the door.
