Southwest Flight Diverted, Lands Safely After Window Cracks

A Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago's Midway Airport to Newark was diverted to Cleveland Wednesday after a mid-flight window issue, according to officials and the plane's passengers.

Southwest said in a statement that Flight 957 was diverted for a "maintenance review of one of the multiple layers of a window pane." Images posted to social media appear to show a crack inside one of the plane's windows.

"Window broke mid flight to Newark from Chicago @SouthwestAir #WhatsGoingOn," tweeted Deepak Chawla, who told NBC News he was on the plane and the window was next to the seat behind him.

The airline said that "the aircraft maintained pressurization as there are multiple layers of panes in each window," and "the flight landed uneventfully in Cleveland."

Pilots did not declare an emergency and no oxygen masks were deployed, according to the FAA, which explained the Boeing 737 landed at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport "due to a broken passenger window." The agency also said the plane landed without incident.

The plane was taken out of service for a maintenance review, and Southwest was working to get the flight's 76 customers on another plane to Newark.

The incident comes just two weeks after another Southwest Boeing 737 made an emergency landing in Philadelphia after an engine exploded mid-flight and blew out a window. A woman died after she was partially sucked out of that window.

In response to the explosion, the FAA ordered hundreds of similar Boeing 737 engines to be inspected. Under the April 20 order, all CFM 56-7B engines that went through at least 30,000 takeoffs or landings had to be inspected within 20 days.

A passenger heard screaming out a car window in the direction of police as if asking for help told officers who questioned him after pulling the vehicle over that no, he didn't need assistance.

"I was just acting stupid," the man said after the Toyota he was riding in was pulled over near Ratzer Road in Wayne, New Jersey, Monday.

Police say they were immediately met with the smell of burnt pot when they pulled over the car.

They found a "White Owl" wrapper containing an unknown amount of pot and found the screaming passenger, 28-year-old Markel Morris, had four warrants out for his arrest -- one in Florida and three in various New Jersey townships.

Morris, of Paterson, was arrested on the outstanding warrants and taken to police headquarters in Wayne for processing. The driver was released without issue.

Morris is being held in Passaic County Jail on charges of pot possession and associated criminal charges for the respective warrants. Details of those warrants weren't immediately clear, nor was it known if he had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.

Rapper Juelz Santana has been indicted on weapons charges after authorities say he tried to bring a gun on a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Federal prosecutors say the two-count indictment made public Wednesday charges Santana with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a weapon on an aircraft.

Santana initially faced both state and federal charges, but the state charges were dismissed after Essex County prosecutors said they would defer to federal authorities.

Santana had pleaded not guilty to state charges. His lawyer was not immediately available to comment Wednesday.

Authorities say security found a loaded .38-caliber handgun and oxycodone pills Santana didn't have a prescription for in a carry-on bag containing his identification.

They say he fled the area, leaving two bags behind. He turned himself in three days later.

Wildwood to Open New Beach Parking Lot

Crossing Wildwood’s gigantic beaches is a daunting trek for some after what may have already been a lengthy walk from their car.

“It’s a long haul,” said Rose Brennan of Northeast Philadelphia. “And the beach just keeps going, going, going.”

Yet after two years of planning and weather-related delays, change is coming. The city is set to open a beach parking area that officials say could easily fit 1,000 cars. The beach parking is expected to begin the weekend before Memorial Day.

The lot will be at Baker Avenue between the Wildwoods Convention Center and Morey’s Adventure Pier. The new parking option allows you to drive right onto the sand at Baker Avenue, as long as your vehicle has four-wheel drive.

“The fee will be $10 a day,” Wildwood City Commissioner Pete Byron said. “And we have $20 for special events. We’ll be open 10 to 6. We picked 6 because the lifeguards traditionally go off at 5:30.”

It takes approximately five minutes to walk from the parking area to the water’s edge. If that’s too long for you, a city beach shuttle will pick you up and bring you to your favorite spot on the sand for an extra $3 each way.

“It’s a help because to me it seems like it’s two miles to walk,” said Cookie Cunningham of Rio Grande, New Jersey.

City leaders believe the parking fees will bring in more than $100,000 this year to help offset some of the cost of maintaining Wildwood’s otherwise free beaches.

“It’ll be a convenience to the vacationers and also add to our bottom line,” Byron said.

Not everyone is on board with the plan however.

“I think it’s a bad idea,” said Robert Trivisonno, a Boardwalk business owner. “There’s one way in. How about if 10 or 15 cars are pulling in for the weekend and how about if 10 cars want to leave? How are they going to get in and out?”

Wildwood isn't the first Jersey Shore town to permit beach parking. Brigantine started offering sand lot parking in 2007.

Inside Philly's First Medical Pot Dispensary

Philadelphia’s first medical marijuana dispensary is finally opening.

Restore Integrative Wellness Center will be located in Philly’s trendy Fishtown neighborhood, directly next to The Barbary nightclub and across the street from The Fillmore music venue. SugarHouse Casino is at the end of the block.

The roughly 5,800-square foot property features all the trimmings of a brand new dispensary: tight security, pristine waiting room and private consultation rooms.

“We’re here to absolutely change a culture around medical marijuana use and de-stigmatize the whole culture around marijuana,” Dimple Thakrar, the self-described chief happiness officer at Restore Integrative Wellness Center, told NBC10.

Thakrar, an English dietitian, and her business partners became interested in Pennsylvania’s cannabis program three years ago. First they considered Center City, but found the permitting process cumbersome for that area. Buildings were too small or could not be retrofitted to accommodate security, electrical and other requirements.

Fishtown was a no-brainer with its empty warehouses and open parking lots.

“There was so much opportunity,” Thakrar said.

“And we liked that it’s regulated,” added Vipul Patel, chief operating officer at Restore Integrative Wellness Center. “It’s not the Wild West like out in California.”

Like other medical dispensaries in the state, Restore Integrative Wellness Center takes a holistic approach. Patients are encouraged to consult in private with a pharmacist who can help them find the right product - from oils and tinctures to pills and creams - to treat their condition. In Pennsylvania, qualifying conditions include:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  • Autism
  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Intractable Seizures
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Neuropathies
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Severe chronic or intractable pain of neuropathic origin or severe chronic or intractable pain in which conventional therapeutic intervention and opiate therapy is contraindicated or ineffective
  • Sickle Cell Anemia

Since the program started in February, more than 30,000 patients have registered. But the program has also come under criticism as growing pains prevail. Several dispensaries ran out of product during their first few weeks in business, something Patel is hopeful won’t happen to his dispensary.

“There were only one or two growers at the time,” Patel said. “We’re expecting up to four by the time we open.”

Pennsylvania’s medical cannabis program is just three months old and is already expanding. This summer, patients will be able to purchase dry leaf for vaping. Under the 2016 Medical Marijuana Act, smoking any other kind of cannabis flower remains illegal.

Restore Integrative Wellness Center will open in mid-May.

3-Year-Old Boy Struck in North Philadelphia Hit-and-Run

A young boy is fighting for his life after he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in North Philadelphia.

The 3-year-old child was on the 2400 block of North Reese Street Wednesday and crossing the road when he was struck by a Burgundy minivan, possibly a Dodge Caravan, driven by an unidentified man.

"Witnesses also say the driver, of the striking vehicle, stopped the minivan, got out, looked at the child, had some words with neighbors," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The driver then fled the scene though witnesses saw the license plate.

Police were able to track the owner of the minivan, a woman. She was not behind the wheel at the time of the crash however. Instead, police say, a man in his 20s was the hit-and-run driver. They continue to search for the man but did not reveal his connection to the vehicle's owner.

The boy was taken to the hospital and is currently in critical but stable condition.

Kareem Edwards' scars on his stomach and wrist will likely stay with him for the rest of his life. But the 17-year-old is still grateful to be up and moving again.

It was just last week when he was stabbed multiple times at a Center City SEPTA station during an incident that witnesses described as a "bloodbath."

"I'm just thankful that I'm here," Edwards said. "I'm not even worried about it anymore."

Edwards, a high school junior, was on his way home from school back on April 25. Edwards and his friend were on the platform of the 8th and Market Street station when they were attacked by 16-year-old Edward Jefferson, according to police.

As the teens fought, Jefferson allegedly took out a knife and stabbed Edwards and his friend multiple times.

"I didn't even know I was stabbed," Edwards said. "When I saw the blood I just dropped."

Jefferson fled the scene as Edwards and his friend walked around bleeding and disoriented.

"My man grabbed me away," Edwards said. "In my head, walking, staggerig away, I'm thinking I'm going to die."

Edwards told NBC10 a woman came to his aid and tried to stop the bleeding. Edwards and his friend were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries. They were both later released.

Nearly a week after the stabbing, Jefferson was arrested and charged as an adult.

Edwards said he never met his attacker and doesn't know why the fight took place.

"I don't forgive him," Edwards said. "But I ain't mad at him."

Former Temple Police Guilty in Beating Death of Woman

Two former Temple University campus police officers are guilty of tying up a Philadelphia woman and beating her to death in front of a young child, a Philadelphia judge ruled Wednesday.

The grisly murder of 24-year-old Joyce Quaweay happened nearly two years ago in Germantown.

At the time of her death, Quaweay was dating Aaron Wright, a 49-year-old former Temple campus police officer. He was found guilty of third-degree murder, aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of  at the home she shared with him.

Marquis Robinson, 43, was also found guilty in Quaweay's death. He was living with Wright and Quaweay. Wright's four children were home at the time of the murder and one of them ultimately led to the men's conviction, according to assistant district attorney Chesley Lightsey.

"The facts in this case were some of the most brutal I have ever seen," she told NBC10.

Wright and Robinson handcuffed Quaweay to a bench, stripped her naked and beat her with a police baton over the course of several hours in August 2016, according to Lightsey.

"She ultimately died of heart failure because her heart was working so hard through the panic that she just collapsed," Lightsey said. "All of this was done in front of a 10-year-old child who was home at the time."

That little girl testified on Wednesday that she, too, had been beaten in the same way in front of her little sister, Lightsey said. The case only lasted three days. Wright and Robinson will be sentenced in July.

A freight train derailment in Delaware County overnight leaving some SEPTA and Amtrak passengers stranded Thursday morning.

Two cars on the Norfolk Southern freight train derailed under an Interstate 95 overpass in Crum Lynne, near Chester and SEPTA’s Eddystone Station, around midnight.

No injuries were reported but damage was done to the morning commute: SEPTA suspended service on its Wilmington/Newark Regional Rail Line and Amtrak suspended Northeast Corridor Service between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

[[481602021, C]]

At Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, passengers voiced frustration over the "chaotic" handling of the "nightmare" commute as they tried to figure out alternative travel plans, NBC10's Katy Zachry reported. Some passengers could be overheard discussing if they should rent a car to get south of the city.

SEPTA added extra service on its Media/Elwyn Line in an attempt to alleviate the pain of the suspension but that service doesn't help people tring to get to Delaware from 30th Street Station.

[[481601701, C]]

It appears the freight train was hauling some sort of asphalt, gravel or rock. A large crane was brought in to upright the overturned cars.

No word yet when when the scene will be cleared.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

Young Couple Shot, Stabbed by Neighbor Who Later Died: A young couple was shot and stabbed multiple times by a man whose family lived across the street from their Bucks County, Pennsylvania, home. He then stole the victim's SUV and headed to Philadelphia where he died of a drug overdose. Daniel Kenneth Mooney, 26, is implicated in the murders of Tyler and Christina Roy. The couple, both in their late 20s, was killed Monday night after a violent struggle with Mooney on the second floor of their home at 26 Kitty Knight Drive in Churchville, Pennsylvania, Bucks County First District Attorney Gregg Shore said late Wednesday. “Our team is unequivocally convinced that he killed the victims and that he acted alone," Shore said during a news conference at the Northampton Township municipal building. Investigators believe Mooney entered the couple's home through an unlocked door. Shore said a rifle — likely owned by the Roys — was used to shoot the victims. The Roys were discovered Tuesday morning by a painter who was doing remodeling work at the home. Tyler, 27, and Christina, 28, moved into the home along the quiet suburban street in 2016, the same year they were married. Christina worked as a real estate photographer and Tyler a construction estimator. Neighbors remembered them as a nice couple. After the killings, Mooney spent some time in the house before stealing the Roys' 2016 Ford Edge, Shore said. He drove about 20 miles south to Northeast Philadelphia, leaving the SUV along with his cell phone. Mooney later overdosed on illegal drugs in the city's Kensington section and was taken to Temple's Episcopal Hospital, where he died, Shore said.

Giuliani: Trump Repaid Cohen $130K for Payment to Porn Star: President Donald Trump reimbursed his personal lawyer for $130,000 in hush money paid to a porn actress days before the 2016 presidential election, Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's attorneys, said Wednesday, appearing to contradict the president's past claims that he didn't know the source of the money. During an appearance on Fox News Channel's "Hannity," Giuliani said the money to repay Michael Cohen had been "funneled ... through the law firm and the president repaid it.” Asked if Trump knew about the arrangement, Giuliani said: "He didn't know about the specifics of it, as far as I know. But he did know about the general arrangement, that Michael would take care of things like this, like I take care of things like this for my clients. I don't burden them with every single thing that comes along. These are busy people.” The comments appeared to contradict statements made by Trump several weeks ago, when he said he didn't know about the payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels as part of a nondisclosure agreement she signed days before the presidential election. Giuliani later suggested to The Wall Street Journal that while Trump had repaid the $130,000, Cohen had settled the payment to Daniels without Trump's knowledge at the time.

A pilot was killed after a single-engine plane went down after takeoff in New Jersey Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the pilot was the only person aboard the Piper PA32 that went down after takeoff from the Greenwood Lake Airport in West Milford, New Jersey, about 2:30 p.m.

Chopper 4 footage shows what appears to be the remnants of the crashed plane about 1,400 feet from the runway. Firefighters could be seen putting water on hot spots from what appeared to be a small brush fire that broke out after the crash.

Several emergency vehicles could be seen. The FAA said the number of people aboard the plane has not been confirmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it would investigate the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board would determine a cause.
