'Too Little Too Latte:' Protesters Gather Outside Starbucks

Protesters swarmed a Philadelphia Starbucks Sunday after two black men were arrested there last week for allegedly refusing to leave.

The demonstration at the Center City cafe started around noon at the intersection of 18th and Spruce streets and quickly escalated. Protesters carrying loud speakers shouted as they crowded into the coffee shop and confronted employees behind the cash register.

One man led a call and response chant: "Today, this space is secure," he said, "secured by the people."

Some demonstrators carried signs that read "Too Little Too Latte" and "#Enough Shame On Your Starbucks." Outside, an organizer told those crowded that "we will not tolerate racial bias anymore."

Sunday's action stemmed from a video posted on social media showing two black men, who claimed to have been waiting for a friend, being handcuffed and escorted out of the coffee shop on Thursday.

On Saturday, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said he wanted to apologize personally to the two men. Johnson posted a lengthy statement on the company's website, calling the situation "disheartening" and "reprehensible."

Even Philadelphia native turned Hollywood actor Kevin Hart waded into the controversy, tweeting that Starbucks must "make this situation right."

Videos posted online showed the men remaining calm as they were surrounded by several officers, who asked them to stand before leading them out of the store.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Starbucks employees called 911 to say the men were trespassing. He said officers did nothing wrong when the men refused to leave, which led to the arrest.

But Johnson said it was wrong for the store to call police and promised to make any "necessary changes" to the company's practices.

"You should expect more from us," Johnson said, adding that he will be visiting Philadelphia and meeting with the regional manager in coming days.

At least one witness who saw the arrest last week described the incident as upsetting.

"I’m black and it was just so ... I was scared for them," Michelle Saahene told NBC10. "I was so angry I was trembling. I was furious."

Saahene said both men were minding their own business, using their phones and sitting quietly.

Women Attack Driver, Intentionally Crash His Vehicle: Police

Police arrested two women accused of attacking a driver and then intentionally crashing his vehicle following a hit-and-run in Atlantic City, New Jersey Saturday afternoon.

Police say Veda Nolasco, 31, of the Bronx, New York, was driving on Rhode Island and Pacific avenues when she was involved in a collision with another vehicle driven by a 35-year-old man. The man's 1-year-old child was also inside his vehicle.

Nolasco sped off after the crash and the man followed her and called 911, police said. At Atlantic Avenue, Nolasco as well as her passenger, Tiffany Williams, 29, of the Bronx, New York, got out, pulled the man out of his vehicle and began to attack him, according to investigators.

Nolasco then allegedly entered the man's vehicle and deliberately crashed it into a telephone pole. Nolasco and Williams then got back into their own vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

The man and his child were both evaluated at the scene by medics and released.

Police located Nolasco’s vehicle on the beach block of New Jersey Avenue. Security personnel with Showboat Atlantic City then found Nolasco and Williams inside their property. They were detained until officers arrived and arrested them.

Both women are charged with robbery, conspiracy, theft, endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault. Nolasco is also charged with several motor vehicle summonses. The two women were remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

If you have any information on the incident, please call the Atlantic City Police Department Criminal Investigations section at 609-347-5766. You can also text information to tip411 (847411) and begin the text with ACPD. All texts are anonymous.

Nearly 207M Eggs Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Outbreak

Rose Acre Farms in Indiana has recalled more than 200 million eggs "through an abundance of caution" because of a possible salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration said on its website Friday.

The eggs were distributed from the company's farm in Hyde County, North Carolina, and sold in stores and restaurants in nine states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia

Twenty-two illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.

Salmonella causes serious and sometimes fatal infections, with symptoms that include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the FDA.

The recalled eggs have a Julian date range of 011 through 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package. A full list of lot codes can be found on the FDA's site. A total of 206,749,248 are affected.

The FDA said consumers who have purchased the eggs should immediately stop using them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

What to Do When You Owe Taxes But Can't Pay the Bill

$
0
0

Instead of enjoying a tax refund this year, you are surprised to find that you owe Uncle Sam. Even worse, you do not have the money to pay these surprise taxes. What can you do?

One thing you definitely do not want to do is ignore the tax bill. That will only make your situation worse in the long run as you rack up fees and penalties. Make sure that you file your taxes on time and choose one of the following options.

Loans/Credit – Depending on the size of the tax bill, it may make sense to take out a loan (if you can qualify) or pay the tax bill via credit card. You will have to estimate when you can expect to pay the bill, and do a cost-benefit analysis on whether the interest you will pay on the credit card or loan is greater than the potential penalties that you would pay the IRS for a delayed or partial payment. Betterment Head of Tax Eric Bronnenkant puts it very succinctly, "Your credit card is usually a high-interest option, but it is an option."

Do not forget to include the fees associated with paying taxes by credit card with an approved vendor (generally from 1.87 percent to 2 percent of the total tax bill). "The IRS isn't willing to absorb any interchange fees, like VISA, Mastercard, and American Express fees," warns Bronnenkant. "Let's say they charge 2 percent per round number, so if you use your credit card, you're basically going to have to pay an additional 2 percent to cover the fees."

Apply for A Short Extension – You can fill out the Online Payment Agreement application on the IRS website to stretch out your debt repayment over 60 to 120 days, or you can call the IRS directly to make the same request. By contacting the IRS, setting up the extension, and paying what you can before the deadline, you will minimize the penalties and interest that you owe.

Before making the final payment, contact the IRS to verify the correct amount of accrued interest, especially if you are paying before the end of the extension. Do not wait on a bill from the IRS.

Request Installment Payment – If you need more than 120 days to pay your bill, consider using IRS Form 9465, "Installment Agreement Request" to set up a payment plan. There will be a fee to set up the plan and after that point you will pay the bill in monthly increments that you set up — assuming the IRS approves your plan. Your payment plan must not stretch out the payments for more than three years. Don’t forget that you’ll probably have a few other tax bills to pay in that timeframe.

File Form 9465 as early as possible because it may take up to 30 days for the IRS to let you know if it has been approved.

Ask For a Hardship Extension – If you qualify for an extension due to financial hardship, you can file Form 1127 with the IRS before the filing deadline to claim an extension of up to six months. Hardship cases require showing a substantial financial loss if the tax is paid on time (for example, having to sell property at a sacrificial loss). A prolonged period of unemployment may qualify.

The IRS does not consider a mere inconvenience worthy of a hardship, and you will have to explain why borrowing the money is not a viable option for you. You must supply a statement of assets and liabilities at the end of the previous month prior to filing the form and list all income and expenses for the prior three months. If you have enough advance warning, we suggest contacting the IRS first to see if you are likely to qualify for a hardship situation.

In general, your best bet to limit the damage is to contact the IRS before the filing date and pay whatever you can at the regular filing deadline to minimize the damage. Investigate the options above to see which one best fits your situation, and do not ignore the problem. Do not expect the IRS to just go away and leave you alone. It won't happen.

"Filing for an extension doesn't get you an extension to pay," warns Bronnenkant. "Let's say you don't pay by April 17th, well then, you're still going to have to pay interest on that money later anyway. Requesting an extension doesn't solve any problems, if your only problem is that you expect to owe money."

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the 2018 Bipartisan Budget Act may cause many changes in your tax situation next season. Try to prevent being caught out by an unexpected tax bill in 2019 by doing your homework on the new laws now.

Police Shoot, Kill Murder Suspect After Chase: After a chase that spanned two counties, New Jersey police officers shot and killed a man accused of murdering another man and critically injuring a woman. Police first responded to a 911 call reporting a man and woman who had been found shot inside a home on Woodhaven Way in Winslow Township early Saturday morning. When officers arrived they found the body of Derek White, 47, and a 26-year-old woman who had been seriously wounded. The woman was taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition. Police learned that two children, ages 2 and 3, were missing from the home. They were last seen with their father, a 55-year-old Pennsville man, in the Salem County area, investigators said. The father was also a suspect in White's murder, officials said. Police found the suspect's vehicle near the home where the victims were found and began a pursuit, according to officials. The chase ended around 9:10 a.m. on Holly Berry Lane in Millville.

          TODAY'S TALKER

Eagles Release Daryl Worley After Arrest: The Philadelphia Eagles have released cornerback Daryl Worley after he was arrested in South Philadelphia on Sunday morning. The team made the announcement Sunday afternoon. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Worley "became combative" with officers and was tasered at the corner of Broad and Pattison, right next to the NovaCare Complex, at 6 a.m. Worley was reportedly found passed out in a vehicle and 911 was called. A gun was also reportedly taken from the scene. The Eagles confirmed Worley's arrest in a statement: "We are in the process of gathering more information about Daryl Worley's arrest this morning." Worley, 23, came to town as the return from Carolina in the Torrey Smith trade. He was just the latest young cornerback added to the Eagles' group. Even better, Worley was returning home to Philly, where his parents still live in their same North Philadelphia neighborhood where he grew up.

          AROUND THE WORLD

Comey Says Possible Russians Have Leverge Over Trump: Former FBI Director James Comey says he thinks it's possible the Russians have compromising information on President Donald Trump, that there is "some evidence of obstruction of justice" in the president's actions and that Trump is "morally unfit" for office. Comey's comments in an ABC News interview that aired Sunday were almost certain to escalate his war of words with the president and further erode a relationship marked by open hostility and name-calling. Hours before the interview aired, the president, who fired Comey last year, unleashed a Twitter outburst that labeled Comey "slippery," suggested he should be put in jail and branded him "the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!" Comey's televised remarks, coupled with the release of his forthcoming book, offer his version of events surrounding his firing and the investigations into Russian election meddling and Hillary Clinton's email practices. Several of the episodes he describes in detail, including a private conversation about former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, are central to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and his recollections are presumably valuable for prosecutors examining whether the president's actions constitute obstruction of justice.

Flash Flood Warning: Heavy Rains Strike

          $
          0
          0

Give yourself extra time to get where you need to go Monday morning as heavy rain, thunderstorms and flooding strike the region. The wet conditions caused massive delays on major highways, including the Schuylkill Expressway and threatened localized flooding along creeks and streams.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team has issued a First Alert for the entire region through noon for the threat heavy downpours that could cause flooding and of potentially damaging winds.

Some neighborhoods have already received more than 2 inches and see 3 inches or more before the rain tapers off later this morning. As a result the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania as well as New Castle County Delaware and Gloucester and Salem counties in New Jersey through 11 a.m. Forecasters also warned of potential moderate coastal flooding in Delaware and at the Jersey Shore and issued Flood Warnings along the Chester Creek in Chester and for Northeast Philadelphia.

Drivers need to give themselves extra time as roads are wet.

Without a crash, the conditions slowed the drive into Philly along I-76 to a near crawl by 8:30 a.m. It took more than 200 minutes to get from the Blue Route (I-476) to I-676 as the roadway flooded near Belmont Avenue. Flooding also closed one of the alternate routes to I-76 as Martin Luther King Drive was closed between Montgomery Drive to the Falls Bridge.

Earlier, some crashes caused problems including a jackknifed tractor-trailer from the westbound Vine Street Expressway (Interstate 676) to the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) around 6 a.m.

Don't drive through flooded streets as the water could be much deeper than it appears.

Damaging winds with gusts of 40 to 50 mph could also bring down tree limbs and cause possible power problems. As of 8:50 a.m. about 3,000 PECO customers were without power, with about half in Bucks County, and more than 800 PPL customers were without power in Lehigh County.

A heavy band of rain with some strikes of lightning moved through before daybreak. It is a good idea to check our Live Interactive Radar to see if the worst of the conditions has passed you before you head out the door.

The heaviest rain should move out by the end of the morning commute but damp conditions could linger into the afternoon. Highs will push into the 60s later in the day before cooling off again heading into a cloudy Tuesday.

Keep checking back with the NBC10 app and NC10.com for the latest First Alert Weather and Traffic.

A well-loved coach in New Jersey was found dead Sunday at a Jersey City park and authorities are calling his mysterious death “suspicious.”

Officials and friends say Anthony Bellos was found dead at Pershing Field park, which is near Manhattan and Central avenues. Prosecutors haven’t determined his cause of death yet and police are trying to piece together how he suddenly died.

And while authorities probe Bellos’ death late Sunday, the community is mourning his death and lining the bench where he died with flowers and notes saying “thanks Coach Bellos.”

“It’s shocking,” Jorainey Quinton, a friend of coach Bellos said. “I feel very bad for his wife and his son, his daughter and his grandson, he talked about them all the time, he loved them. Mr. Bellos wouldn’t hurt anybody.”

Quinton added that Bellos ”was a great man.”

"He was always so positive for the children, families, everyone," Quinton said. "He just wanted to see everyone happy, everyone succeed."

The investigation into Bellos’ death is ongoing.

          Last-Minute Tax Day Filing Tips

          $
          0
          0

Waiting until the last minute to pay your taxes can cost you if you are expecting a refund, since the government hangs on to your money and receives more interest on it. However, if you owe money to the government, that same principle applies to you. Why not wait until the last minute?

There is no reason not to, as long as your return is postmarked or electronically submitted by April 17th, 2018, and your payments are submitted then as well. Extending your deadline to file does not extend your payment time. You are expected to pay the amount you owe, or your best estimate, by the April 17th deadline.

"Filing for an extension doesn't get you an extension to pay," confirms Betterment Head of Tax Eric Bronnenkant. "Let's say you don't pay by April 17th, well then you're still going to have to pay interest on that money later anyway." He summarizes, "Requesting an extension doesn't solve any problems, if your only problem is that you expect to owe money."

If you do have to make an estimate, it is usually best to err towards overpaying. Paying too much can always be applied to next year's taxes; however, paying too little requires that you pay interest on the difference – and could expose you to an audit if you greatly underestimate the amount.

You have four general payment methods from which to choose:

Check/Money Order – The classics never go out of style. The IRS accepts checks or money orders payable to the United States Treasury. Include your name, address, phone number, Social Security number, tax year, and the 1040-V payment voucher (or other voucher as appropriate for the tax form you are submitting). Check the IRS website to find the address to which your check or money order should be mailed.

Credit/Debit Cards – There are three IRS-approved payment processors for credit or debit cards. Links to these vendors may be found on the IRS website. Debit card charges are usually flat fees ($2.00-$3.95) and credit cards are charged as a percentage fee (1.87%-2.00%).

Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) – Essentially, this is the reverse of direct deposit. Most e-filing methods require EFW. This must take place as part of the electronic filing process – you cannot initiate EFW after your taxes have been submitted.

Check with your financial institution and verify that they allow EFW transactions. If so, they will supply you with the routing number and account number for the account from which you wish to have the funds withdrawn. Do not assume that the routing number on your checks is the correct one – sometimes extra internal routing digits are included, and the numbers need to conform to the IRS standards.

You will need to supply a contact phone number, Social Security numbers for every filer, and a payment date. You can still choose to have your payment made on April 17th, even if your form is filed earlier.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) – This is the IRS-run equivalent of EFW. It has the advantage of allowing same-day wiring of funds from your account and is useful for scheduling regular estimated tax payments for the self-employed.

EFTPS requires registration with the IRS. It can take five to seven business days to register, so make sure you leave enough time for your registration process to be completed before your payment deadline expires.

Electronic methods can be used on all 1040 Series forms, but not all tax forms or taxes can be handled through electronic payments. For details, check the links available on the IRS website. This page also contains links for businesses to use in electronic payments.

Should the computer gremlins attack or you spill coffee on your keyboard, you can still pay by phone using one of the IRS-approved credit/debit card processors, or by calling the IRS directly and using EFTPS.

The good news is you have options, but the bad news is that you still must pay. Choose whichever payment method works best for you, and pay at the last minute with confidence. Just do not forget to make that payment before the deadline, or you'll have to make a much bigger payment later.

A day after being arrested near the Eagles training facility and just hours after his release, we now know the charges former Eagle Daryl Worley is facing.

A Philadelphia municipal judge arraigned Worley Sunday night on DUI, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and firearms charges, court records said.

The Philadelphia Eagles released the 23-year-old defensive back on Sunday afternoon due to the arrest which occurred outside the team's practice facility at Broad and Pattison streets that same morning at 6 a.m.

Worley was found passed out in a car on the corner of Broad and Pattison near the NovaCare Complex in South Philly, a report by the NFL Network said. Worley became combative with officers and was hit with a stun gun and a gun, the report said.

Police say they recovered a gun at the scene.

Worley, a Philadelphia native who attended Penn Charter, came to the Eagles from the Carolina Panthers in the Torrey Smith trade earlier this offseason.

Worley posted $25,000 bail and we released, court documents said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1.

Bruce Springsteen treated his 92-year-old mother to an early birthday celebration before Mother Nature spoiled the party.

The 68-year-old Boss and his mom, Adele, danced to two songs Sunday night at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey before severe storms caused the club to lose power. They were there to see the Eddie Testa Band, reportedly one of Adele's favorite bands.

Patrons say the Springsteens — along with the rocker's 24-year-old son Sam — were in the club for about 90 minutes.

Adele Springsteen turns 93 on May 4.

Philly DA's Office Supports New Trial for Jailed Rapper Meek Mill

          0
          0

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill is inching closer to freedom after the District Attorney’s office on Monday called for a new trial to be set.

Assistant DA Liam Riley told Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley that Mill’s original trial and sentence was called into question earlier this year after the name of his arresting officer appeared on a list of alleged corrupt cops in Philadelphia. The testimony given by former Officer Reginald Graham could not necessarily be trusted, Riley said.

But Brinkley, who presided over Mill’s initial case in 2007, was not swayed by either the prosecution nor Mill’s defense team, who asked for a new trial date.

Instead, the judge set an evidentiary hearing for June 18. Mill’s defense team also asked that the case be handed over to Judge Sheila Woods-Skipper, who will be hearing other cases involving the officers included on the list. Brinkley bristled and said she would need to consult with Wood-Skipper before agreeing to anything.

Brinkley also refused to hear any mention of granting bail. Defense attorney Joe Tacopina said Mill’s team will appeal to the a Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

"We’re elated the District Attorney's Office has agreed to a new trial,” Fellow defense attorney Brian McGonagle said outside the courtroom. "The office has shown a great amount of integrity granting our request for a new trial. They have recognized and determined the criminal behavior on the part of the arresting officer, which dates back to Meek’s arrest."

Mill's team has also been carrying out a high-profile public relations campaign to exert pressure on the judge. Civil rights leaders, politicians, entertainers, and even New England Patriot's owner Robert Kraft have visited Mill in prison and called for his release.

Outside the Criminal Justice Center, cheers erupted as news spread. Demonstrators carrying Free Meek Mill signs danced in the streets. Mill’s mother, Kathy Williams, told NBC10 while she is hopeful, she is also frustrated by the legal wrangling.

"I’m just so tired,” she said. “I really don't know what else to say."

NJ Teen Behind Viral Eminem Cover Surprised With Music Studio

          0

A New Jersey teenager who has wowed the world with his musical talent -- including a viral rendition of Eminem's song "Not Afraid" -- was surprised with a music recording studio on the NBC home improvement show "George to the Rescue."

Sparsh Shah was born with a genetic disease that causes his bones to be very fragile. The 14-year-old from New Jersey has had more than 125 bone fractures so far in his young life, a result of Osteogenesis imperfecta.

The brittle bone disease has stunted Shah's growth and confined him to a wheelchair -- but it hasn't broken his spirit.

He's found his passion in music, and has written more than 10 original songs. But it's his clean cover of the 2010 Eminem song "Not Afraid," fused with Indian classical music, that launched him toward stardom and garnered more than 10 million views on YouTube.

Shah has sung the National Anthem at an NBA game, performed on the show "Little Big Shots," given a motivational TedTalk and acquired an international fan base on his YouTube channel.

"Him being in a wheelchair, we never imagined that he would be able to touch souls and lives of people not just in his neighborhood, but in 200 countries," his father, Hiren Shah, said.

Sparsh Shah said it's important to stay focused on the positive, and music helps him deliver that message.

In an effort to help Shah on that mission, "George to the Rescue" host Geroge Oliphant surprised the child music prodigy with his dream music studio and renovated the family's Iselin home with wheelchair-friendly upgrades.

"I’m convinced he will help make the world a better place & am honored to have been able to help him on that mission. There is no Impossible only I’m possible," Oliphant tweeted about the renovation project.
