After Reassignment, SEPTA Retires K9 & Reunites With Family

0
0

After a staffing change split up a longtime K9 officer and his handler, SEPTA Police say they're reuniting the two by retiring the dog from the police force.

SEPTA Police K9 Abal will once again call the Galanti household home after the family was forced to give him up last week.

Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesman, said Friday that veterinarians discovered Abal developed a degenerative bulging disc in his spine, which sidelined him from work as a dual-purpose explosive detection and patrol K9.

The department decided, after consulting with doctors at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital, that Abal wouldn't be able to return to active duty. Officials are allowing former partner, SEPTA Police officer Richard Galanti, to adopt him.

Abal was relocated to the department's kennel last Tuesday after Galanti was reassigned to another unit in the department in March. The reassignment left Galanti and his family devastated. Abal had lived with them for five years and helped them navigate the death of their 14-year-old son.

News of the split sparked a public outcry on social media. An online petition organized by Galanti's wife, Nicole, calling for Abal to be returned to the family racked up more than 161,000 signatures.

At the time, SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel said Abal had years of service ahead of him as an officer and that it would be unfair to deprive him or the department of his work.

Busch said the department will begin working immediately to replace Abal on the force.

Key Attacks in Pennsylvania's GOP Race for Governor

0
0

Television attack ads are flying between Scott Wagner and Paul Mango in Pennsylvania's Republican primary for governor, with a month until the election where GOP voters will pick a challenger to take on Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.

Attack ads being aired by Mango and Wagner are playing on TV screens across the state, and it could stay that way until the May 15 primary election.

Wagner and Mango had, until recently, battled over who is the most conservative candidate, but they also have taken shots at each other's records — or their companies' records — in the private sector.

Meanwhile, a third Republican candidate, Laura Ellsworth, casts herself as the mature alternative.

An analysis of key claims in TV ads aired by Mango and Wagner:

Deadbeat Dad

Mango's 30-second ad that began airing April 4 used a cartoon figure of Wagner and pounded him as a slumlord, a polluter, a sleazy bail bondsman, a greedy businessman and, perhaps most damning, a deadbeat dad.

In question was the Mango ad's contention that Wagner was "hauled into court and ordered to pay $800,000 in back alimony and child support."

The allegation was based on Wagner's long-running child support and alimony case. It followed the 2008 separation from his third wife and involved support for his youngest daughter, Cristina.

A judge found in 2012 that Wagner had an $800,000 overdue payment in a case stemming from a dispute over Wagner's income that should be considered eligible for calculating his support obligations. The judge's opinion noted that Wagner had made support payments going back to the separation.

A lawyer who has 26 years focusing on family law, John F. King, of suburban Harrisburg, said the term "deadbeat dad" is a somewhat subjective term. After looking over the judge's decision in Wagner's case, King concluded that Wagner "certainly did not turn his back on wife and child. He just dramatically underpaid (based upon his legal obligation) until ordered by the court to do otherwise," he wrote in an email.

A deadbeat dad, King said, is often used to describe someone who tries to avoid their support obligation. "Mr. Wagner did not try to avoid his obligation," King wrote. "He did, however, try to seriously mitigate it."

The case dragged on for three years because it was a complex case, and required fact-finding, expert analysis and numerous hearings, King said.

Wagner's campaign said he had paid child support on time and his lawyer in the case told the York Daily Record in 2013 that the sides ultimately settled the case in a confidential agreement.

Obamacare Advocate

A 30-second ad that Wagner began airing March 13 made several claims about Mango or the consultancy where he worked for nearly three decades, McKinsey and Company.

One key claim calls Mango "the leading advocate for Obamacare," the sweeping federal health care law called the Affordable Care Act that former President Barack Obama signed in 2010.

Mango spent most of his time at McKinsey as a health care systems consultant, before leaving the company in early 2017 to run for governor.

In support of the claim, the Wagner campaign cited little more than a 2009 magazine article in which Mango agreed with hospital-system officials that universal insurance with subsidies for the poor would greatly reduce hospital losses and a paper Mango co-authored in 2007 that cited mandated coverage as one of various approaches health systems use to fix problems.

In any case, Wagner's campaign did not identify a single statement by Mango that urged Congress to pass the legislation or suggested that Mango was a leading advocate.

Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist who was a consultant to the Obama administration on technical aspects of the health care law, said he had never heard of Mango.

Also Joan Alker, a prominent health care policy researcher and executive director of the Center for Children and Families at Georgetown University in Washington, said she had never heard of Mango and would not characterize McKinsey as in any way instrumental in the fight for the health care law.

McKinsey, itself, says it is non-partisan and neutral on policy. If anything, McKinsey was noted for a report it produced in 2011 that gave a much harsher assessment than the Obama administration of the law's effect on private-sector employer-provided insurance.

Mango said he never advocated for the health care law and supports its repeal.

Outrage Grows Over 2 Black Men Arrested at Philly Starbucks

Two black men were handcuffed and taken to a police district after they allegedly refused to leave a Starbucks in Center City, Philadelphia when a cafe manager told them they had to order something, according to witnesses.

About five to seven police officers arrived about 4:30 p.m. and arrested the two men, who have not been identified, according to the witnesses inside the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce streets.

Video of the encounter shows the two men remain calm as they were surrounded by officers, then asked to stand up, handcuffed and led out of the store. Witnesses inside the store could be heard asking what the men did that would lead the officers to arrest them.

"I’m black and it was just so, I was scared for them," one witness, Michelle Saahene, told NBC10. "I was so angry I was trembling. I was furious. I even approached the manager…I asked the barista why she called the cops on them."

Saahene said she was told that the store manager called police.

"They actually put them in handcuffs because they didn’t buy a f--- latte," Saahene said.

By Saturday afternoon, Commissioner Richard Ross took to Facebook Live.

Ross defended his officers' actions. He said the men refused to leave the store after a few requests by the responding officers.

The men were later released after Starbucks declined to press trespassing charges.

A Starbucks spokesman said in a statement that the company regrets "the disruption this created for our customers and partners."

"We seek a welcoming environment," Starbucks spokesman Reggie Borges said.

Borges added that it is company policy for Starbucks stores in Philadelphia, and in many other cities, to require anyone who wishes to use the facilities, including the bathrooms and sitting areas, to purchase something.

Police Shoot and Kill Murder Suspect After Chase in NJ

After a chase that spanned two counties, New Jersey police officers shot and killed a man accused of murdering another man and critically injuring a woman.

Police first responded to a 911 call reporting a man and woman who had been found shot inside a home on Woodhaven Way in Winslow Township early Saturday morning.

When officers arrived they found the body of Derek White, 47, and a 26-year-old woman who had been seriously wounded. The woman was taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition.

Police learned that two children, ages 2 and 3, were missing from the home. They were last seen with their father, a 55-year-old Pennsville man, in the Salem County area, investigators said. The father was also a suspect in White's murder, officials said.

Police found the suspect's vehicle near the home where the victims were found and began a pursuit, according to officials.

The chase ended around 9:10 a.m. on Holly Berry Lane in Millville.

"I heard gunshots, police running," said Faith Torres, a witness. "It was just crazy."

A Millville Police officer and two Winslow Township officers opened fire at the suspect.

"The cop told him to put his hands up," said Sonya Cuff, another witness. "He opened the door and got out. And they shot him."

Witnesses say medics began performing CPR on the man. They also say they spotted a woman running away from the scene.

"She was like yelling," Torres said. "I guess she was in shock."

The suspect was taken to Inspira Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect's two children were found safe in Salem County around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials have not yet released the suspect’s identity or his relationship with the two victims found in the Winslow Township home. An autopsy is pending.

Both the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.

Sixers Cool Off the Heat in Dominant Game 1 Win

0
0

Welcome to the playoffs.

The Sixers beat the Heat, 130-103, Saturday night to the tune of "Trust the Process" chants echoing throughout the Wells Fargo Center.

Their win streak now stands at 17, dating back to the regular season, as they captured Game 1 with a statement victory.

• The Sixers came out of a four-point deficit at halftime and basically said, “We’ll take care of the third quarter, thanks.” They outscored the Heat 34-18, including a 15-0 run. Ersan Ilyasova had five points, three boards and a block during that spurt. The Sixers have been dominating third quarters as of late. They outscored their opponents 480-367 in that quarter during their 16-game winning streak and were outscored only three times.

• The Wells Fargo Center was so loud it was hard to hear yourself think. The Sixers set the tone by having Joel Embiid ring the ceremonial pregame bell … in a mask. Yes, the Phantom of the Process still was part of Game 1. The crowd got hyped to see Allen Iverson and LeSean McCoy in attendance. Even former Sixer Nik Stauskas returned to the arena to support the Sixers.

• Can a rookie point guard lead a team in the postseason? Ben Simmons proved it with 17 points, nine rebounds and 14 assists. He ran into foul trouble (four) and committed five turnovers, but he didn't have any in the second half, showing his discipline. Simmons, who usually keeps a calm demeanor, was showing more emotion on his face as he competed on a bigger stage.

• The value of the buyout additions of Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova is going to be immeasurable in the postseason. The Sixers' bench went from struggling to find a scorer to having two reliable options. Belinelli dropped 25 points and Ilyasova recorded a double-double by the third quarter (17 points, 14 rebounds on the night). Simmons is the first rookie to ever record that stat line in the playoffs.

• JJ Redick started off the game with a hiccup. He fell awkwardly on his left side and landed on his arm and face. Redick returned and looked unfazed, scoring a game-high 28 points and a perfect 8 for 8 from the line. He is one of the more interesting Sixers to watch in-between plays. Redick often is talking to teammates after a make or miss, frequently making hand motions to direct the next call and providing an invaluable leadership in-game.

• This game wasn't about the bigs. Hassan Whiteside didn’t have the impact it seemed like he would have going into the series. He played just 12 minutes and scored two points with six rebounds. Backup center Bam Adebayo also had a limited role with two points with one rebound in 21 minutes. Instead, it was stretch forward Kelly Olynyk who was a pest off the bench, netting a team-high 26 points, including four threes, and seven boards.

• The postseason version of Dario Saric competes on another level. He provides gifs for days with his post-basket reactions. In spite of still experiencing discomfort from cellulitis in his right elbow, Saric scored 20 points (4 for 6 from deep), six rebounds and three dimes.

• Yeah, Markelle Fultz is ready for the playoffs.

• Don’t look at the box score to get the full impact of Amir Johnson’s game. The 30-year-old has an internal hustle. Those early years on the veteran-heavy Pistons have carried over in his career.

• The Sixers continued their uptempo, three-point shooting strategy. They hit 18 of 28 from long range, a massive 64.3 percent.
