NJ Babysitter Accused of Kidnapping Baby Boy

Police arrested a babysitter accused of kidnapping a baby boy.

The investigation began when a woman reported her 4-month-old son was missing after she went to pick her son up at a home on 33rd Street in Camden, New Jersey and didn’t see him there. Police say the woman tried to contact the boy’s babysitter, Nadajia Hill, 22, of Camden, and was unable to reach her.

Hill had been taking care of the baby Friday night. She allegedly took the child to Newark, New Jersey, using public transportation, and then took him on a southbound New Jersey Transit RiverLine train.

Hill and the baby were located by officers on the train after it stopped in Riverside, New Jersey shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The baby was found to be in good health and was returned to his family, police said.

Hill was arrested and charged with kidnapping and child endangerment. She was remanded to the Camden County Jail.

Nor’easter No. 3: What You Need to Know

0
0

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team has issued a First Alert for eastern parts of the region for yet another nor’easter that will develop and impact the region beginning Monday afternoon.

The First Alert is in effect from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday for the Jersey Shore, eastern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania suburbs and Northeast Philadelphia. The neighborhoods impacted by the First Alert are in Atlantic, Bucks, Burlington, Camden, Mercer, Northampton and Ocean counties, as well as the Poconos.

There is some good news: This storm doesn’t look as impactful as the last two have been to our region. But snow, rain and wind are on the horizon including the possibility of gusty 40 mph winds in land, accumulating snow and a slushy Tuesday morning commute. Let’s walk through the details.

The coastal low will develop along the East Coast early Monday, and begin a quick climb northward. By Monday afternoon, we expect rain showers to fall over southern Delaware, the shore and South Jersey.

The coastal low begins to approach our shoreline - although farther away than the last two storms — as evening arrives. It is expected to start as rain in our region Monday.

Little to no accumulation is expected at the start of this event, but road temperatures will quickly fall with the onset of snow and sunset combined.

Overnight, the coastal low will hit its closest point to us. This might allow for snow to fall as far north as the Poconos. Computer models are still NOT in 100 percent agreement with the exact track of the developing nor’easter, so some models do not stretch the precipitation all the way north of our region.

Regardless, we’re calling for a chance of light snow — and mixing farthest south — throughout all of our neighborhoods.

By the early morning hours (1 to 6 a.m.), most of the precipitation will turn to snow. It may be a little steadier over the coastline and areas like Burlington and Mercer counties.

Notice this model begins to lift the nor’easter track away from us by 7 a.m. We expect most snow to stop falling between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Here’s a summary of our current forecast with this storm. The steadiest snow will likely fall Tuesday morning. Snow could sticks throughout the night in eastern neighborhoods with plunging temperatures, so people may wake up to a thin blanket of snow over at least part of the region.

Our current snow total forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches of snow along the Jersey Shore and eastern New Jersey. Totals run between a dusting to 2 inches through Northeast Philadelphia, other South Jersey neighborhoods, Bucks County, Northampton County and the Poconos. Neighborhoods from Philadelphia westward, including Chester and Delaware counties might only get up to an inch of accumulation.

Winds will pick up Tuesday. Again, this storm won’t be as impactful to our region as the last two storms. Snow totals won’t be as high and gusts won’t be as strong. Gusts up to 45 mph are possible along the coast. Gusts from 30 to 40 mph are possible inland. Areas farther north will be breezy.

On top of slightly stronger gusts and snow totals, the shore may see minor coastal flooding and rough seas with the coastal low’s passage Monday evening throughout the night. Small craft owners should be advised.

This is a tough forecast. Computer models aren’t in total agreement with the track of the nor’easter. The track will play a crucial role in snow totals, and wind gusts.

Currently, the strongest wind gusts and heaviest bands of rain and snow are forecast just off-shore, closer to the low itself. So, if the track wobbles slightly northward and westward, higher snow totals will force farther inland and gusts will be stronger.

However, only a small shift in the track to the south and east could mean less rain and snow. Areas like the Lehigh Valley or suburbs could see little to nothing with this type of track change.

At this point, we have moderate confidence in our storm’s forecasted track, but we’ll be continuing to closely track the storm development over the Tennessee Valley. Changes to the development of the low could mean changes to our forecast in a ripple effect.

Dogs Rescued From Philadelphia Dog-Fighting Ring

Animal welfare officials broke up a dog-fighting ring Saturday night on the 1200 block of South 35th Street in Philadelphia's Grays Ferry neighbhorhood, according to the Pennsylvania SPCA.

Fourteen suspects were taken into custody.

Officers found drugs, two firearms, cash and a blood-spattered wooden fighting ring at the scene, the SPCA said.

Two pitbull-type dogs were transported to a shelter hospital. They are currently in stable condition, according to SPCA, which has custody of the dogs until their owners sign them over or until their court case is heard.

Sunday morning, officers searched a suspect’s vehicle and found an additional dog, according to the PSPCA. One of the dog's was wearing a weighted collar consistent with dog fighting. A second dog appeared ill and was taken to a shelter for treatment.

“Cases like this remind us that while we may not always hear about it, dog fighting is still happening in the City of Philadelphia,” Nicole Wilson, director of Humane Law Enforcement at PSPCA, said in a statement.

The investigation is open and ongoing, and PSPCA asks anyone with information on the case to call their Cruelty Hotline: 866-601-7722.

Gunman Breaks Into Vehicle and Garage, Shoots at Homeowner

Police are searching for a man accused of breaking into a vehicle, entering a family’s garage and then opening fire at a homeowner after she confronted him.

The ordeal began shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday at a home on Madison Avenue in the Fort Washington section of Upper Dublin Township. Police say the man entered an unlocked vehicle in the driveway, found a garage door opener inside and then used it to enter the garage.

The homeowner, Melissa Malloy, told NBC10 she first spotted the suspect in a black Ford Expedition outside her house but figured he was lost and needed directions. She became suspicious when she heard her garage door opening. When she went to investigate she saw the suspect inside her garage.

“I wasn’t thinking,” Malloy said. “I was really curious. What are you doing here? And who do you think you are? And he didn’t respond at all.”

Malloy chased the man out of the garage. Realizing the danger, she turned around. That’s when the man pulled out a gun and fired one shot. Fortunately for Malloy, she wasn’t struck. The man went into his vehicle and fled the scene.

“I remember hearing the shot and thinking, that sounded exactly like a gunshot but it’s Sunday morning, in Upper Dublin,” Melissa’s husband Chris Malloy told NBC10.

Neither Melissa, Chris nor their three children were injured during the incident.

“He dropped it all in the driveway on his way out to his car and there was a shell casing on the road,” Chris Malloy said.

The scary moment for the family comes as Chris continues to recover from a cancer battle.

“We’re going to lock our doors,” Melissa Malloy said. “We’re going to make sure our car doors are locked and we’re just going to carry on.”

Police described the suspect as a “heavy-set male” but did not release further description. Surveillance video from a neighbor also captured the suspect breaking into another vehicle in the area. If you have any information on the incident or suspect, please call Upper Dublin Police.

Lehigh University Sorority Banned Over Scanvenger Hunt: A Pennsylvania university has kicked a sorority off campus due to what officials are calling a “reprehensible” scavenger hunt that involved drugs, alcohol and sexual activity. Alpha Chi Omega’s Theta Chi chapter lost its recognition by Lehigh University for two years and will be banned from campus through May 2020. The Lehigh Greek Community blog published by the university says the sorority hosted a December scavenger hunt in which participants were given a list of tasks that involved “the use of drugs and alcohol, sexual activity and other activities” that violate the Bethlehem school’s policy. The sorority was suspended pending an investigation by a disciplinary committee that called the activity “reprehensible.” Alpha Chi Omega can appeal. The national organization conducted an investigation resulting in probation and individual punishments.

A Pennsylvania school district says it has hired armed security guards to staff its three schools starting this week.

In an email sent to parents Friday, Pen Argyl Superintendent William Haberl says the armed guards will be stationed at the district's elementary, middle and high school starting Monday.

The district hired the officers from the private firm Camelot Security, which it has used in the past for school events such as dances and athletic games. The firm says its officers include high level law enforcement and surveillance specialists.

Haberl says in the letter the district was prompted by the "sad and painful reality" of shootings in schools. He has not responded to requests seeking comment.

Rapper Surrenders After Fleeing NJ Airport in Gun Bust: Sources

          0

Rapper and actor Juelz Santana surrendered to authorities early Monday, just more than 48 hours after he allegedly ran from a security screening at Newark Liberty International Airport when law enforcement sources said Transportation Security Administration agents found a gun on him, News 4 has learned.

Santana, whose real name is LaRon Louis James, turned himself in around 1 a.m. The 36-year-old Harlem-born performer faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, along with a charge related to an unspecified federal warrant, Port Authority officials said. He is due in Newark federal court later Tuesday.

Santana's reps have not returned NBC 4 New York's calls seeking comment.

He was going through the screening at Terminal C at Newark around 6 p.m. Friday when sources said agents discovered the firearm in his carry-on.

Sources said that once the "Love and Hip-Hop: New York" star was detected by authorities, he took off running and may have gotten in a taxi.

The TSA didn't reveal the name of the rapper, citing privacy laws, but said that a passenger going through screening around that time had a gun in his bag. When the passenger realized the gun had been found, the TSA said the man left the airport, leaving his luggage and gun behind.

According to TSA regulations, bringing a weapon to an airport security checkpoint is punishable by a fine up to $13,000 and in some cases could lead to an arrest.

Two high school sweethearts from New Jersey returned to where they first met decades ago to exchange wedding vows this weekend.

Chris Gash and Jenn Sudol walked down the aisle, that is, the halls of Clifton High School, on Saturday.

The couple married in front of the same lockers where they first locked eyes as high school freshman back in 1989.

“There’s a lot of, you know, ducks to get in a row, and then the snow almost stopped it from happening,” Gash said, referring to the dual nor’easters this past week.

“Never mind the 29 years before that,” Sudol said.

The newlyweds say they dated briefly back in high school but then went their separate ways.

The two of them kept in touch over the years and finally started dating again in 2016.

“I can’t believe we made it,” Gash said.
