A Guy With a Michael Knight Action Figure Meets Olympians

0
0

You meet all kinds of people, from all over the world, at the Winter Olympics.

And you meet people with all kinds of interests. Like the guy who really, really loves action figures, and so brought one of his to Pyeongchang.

He brought an action figure of Michael Knight, the protagonist of the 1980s TV show "Knight Rider." You know, the guy played by David Hasselhoff who drove the talking car, K.I.T.T.

Why? Why not? His owner, Justin Caplicki, found his first Michael Knight in a flea market, and one thing led to another. Caplicki owns 88 Michael Knight action figures right now, he said.

Michael Knight has met some amazing people. Caplicki has pictures of him meeting (and nearly smooching) skater Adam Rippon, NASCAR legend and NBC commentator Dale Earnhardt Jr., and several players from the U.S. women's hockey team, which won gold in Pyeongchang.

This isn't Michael Knight's first Olympics, either. Caplicki has pictures of him meeting Sunday Night Football's Al Michaels at the Rio games.

"I'm pretty sure (Michaels) will remember that the rest of his life, as well," Caplicki said.

By the way, Caplicki isn't necessarily a Hasselhoff fan. He has no "Baywatch" collectibles. This is about "Knight Rider."

"I will always collect Michael Knights, until I die," Caplicki said.

Why? Again, why not?

"I think it's more interesting to take pictures of him than me when I go to these places," Caplicki said. "I'm not married for some reason, so I think this is a great thing to do."

Five to Watch: Gold Medal Game in Men's Hockey and Team USA's History-Making Flag Bearer

One of the iconic moments for Team USA in these Pyeongchang Olympics was Jessie Diggins pushing down the stretch during the women’s team sprint to earn America’s first-ever cross country gold medal.

[[474578183, L]]

So, it’s fitting that Diggins will end the Olympics by carrying the American flag in Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium during the closing ceremonies.

But before Diggins leads Team USA out of the Olympics, there are more medals to be awarded: The host country’s "Garlic Girls" go for gold in women’s curling and the not-Russians go for gold in men’s hockey. The United States will try to spoil a Canada-Germany rematch in the bobsled, and Norway will try to add to an already-historic Olympic medal haul.

Here’s five things that you need to watch on the final day of the Winter Olympics:

Historic Gold Medalist Carries the Red, White and Blue

Jessie Diggins captured the United States' first-ever women’s cross-country skiing medal when she and teammate Kikkan Randall won gold in the freestyle team event. Now, the 26-year-old will be the first country-country skier to carry the U.S. flag in the Winter Games’ closing ceremonies.

"I actually thought there maybe had been a mistake. I was like, 'What? I can’t believe this,'" Diggins said on the "Today" show. "It is so humbling, and I feel so honored to have been picked."

[[474947083, C]]

Some of the star power will be in the stands, where President Donald’s Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, will lead the U.S. delegation. The opening ceremony spotlight was on the mysterious Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, who was dubbed "North Korea's Ivanka." Will the real Ivanka Trump be able to seize some of that limelight?

As for entertainment, expect K-pop stars CL and the boy band EXO. Not to mention the commentary by figure skating and fashion experts Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski.

Watch the closing ceremony Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC10 or on digital platforms here.

Or, if you are an early bird, watch the closing ceremony live (natural sound only) at 6 a.m. ET on digital platforms here.

Not-Russia Goes for Elusive Hockey Gold

The Soviet Union won the hockey gold medal in the Olympics seven times between 1956 and 1988. The Unified Team, a team of post-Soviet players, won the gold medal in 1992.

And when the Russians play for the gold medal on Sunday, they will be competing as OAR, the Olympic Athletes from Russia.

So the Russians are trying to win a ninth hockey gold medal while never actually winning one for Russia.

After failing to win a gold medal at the last six Olympics (regardless of their name), and failing to win any medal at the last three, the Pyeongchang games seemed to be Russia’s best chance in decades. With the National Hockey League missing in action — it refused to allow its players to participate in the Olympics — the Russians entered the tournament as the heavy favorite.

“We’ve been striving for this for years,” said Oleg Znarok, Russia’s coach.

[[474992823, C]]

But because of a doping scandal that impacted the country’s entire Olympic program, the Russian national team has been banned from these Olympics — hence the Olympic Athletes from Russia name. If they beat Germany, the Russian flag will not be raised, and the Russian national anthem will not play. .

They face a surprising German team in the gold medal match. The Germans upset Canada in the semifinals, 4-3.

The Russians haven’t needed upsets to reach the finals. After losing to Slovakia 3-2 in its opening game, the Russians won four consecutive games by a combined score of 21-3, including a 6-1 win over Norway in the quarterfinals and a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic in the semifinals. In pool play, the Russians beat the United States, 4-0.

Watch live on NBCSN at 10:30 p.m. ET Saturday or on digital platforms here.

#GarlicGirls Trend as an Internet Meme But They’re Tuned Out

South Korea’s curling team heads into the final against Sweden, the culmination of a surprise winning streak that has brought them to the top of the rankings and in contention for the gold.

Dubbed the “Garlic Girls” for their hometown’s locally grown garlic, they are a phenomenon not just on the ice, but on social media, too, where fans search for their nicknames and distinctive eyewear.

[[474960683, C]]

But the women apparently don’t know what superstars they’ve become. They’ve turned off their phones for the duration of the Games to keep their focus.

No, We Haven't Had Enough Figure Skating!

The Winter Games will celebrate one of its best-loved events Saturday night with the figure skating exhibition gala, an unscored event that allows men and women skaters to stop worrying so much about which blade they landed that triple axel on and show off the beauty of the sport.

Skating exhibitions can be a lot of fun to watch. Without the pressure of competition, the moves are looser and more experimental. In the 1994 gala in Lillehammer, figure skater Surya Bonaly showed off her completely awesome, and very illegal in skating, backflip-to-one-blade move. (And then she pulled the same move in competition in 1998 at the Nagano games.)

At the Sochi Winter Games, Tatsuki Machida of Japan skated to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen and played air guitar.

Unfortunately, the gala will apparently NOT see the return of the Prince of Pyeongchang, Pennsylvania's own Adam Rippon, who finished 10th in the men's competition.

Rippon was not invited to the gala, according to published reports. This is a shame; he shines in exhibitions. In 2017, at the Grand Prix exhibition gala, he skated to -- and sang -- Rhianna's "Diamonds."

[[475008683, C]]

The only U.S. skaters who will participate are Alex and Maia Shibutani, the "Shib Sibs," who won bronze in ice dance.

Pyeongchang’s Final Event: Cross Country 30km Mass Start Classic

Perhaps it’s only fitting that the final event of these Pyeongchang games gives Norway one more chance to add to its record-setting Olympics.

[[474993843, C]]

Norway could add two more medals in the final event, the women’s cross country 30km mass start classic, as Marit Bjoergen and Heidi Weng could both finish on the podium. Bjoergen is already the most decorated winter athlete ever, with 14 total medals, including four (a gold, a silver and two bronze) in Pyeongchang.

Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla could pose the biggest challenge for the Norwegians.

Two people have been charged in the death of a toddler in Wilmington, Delaware.

On February 17 around 4:45 a.m., police were called to Wilmington Hospital where a 15-month-old child had died. The Delaware State Medical Examiner’s Office later determined the child had died from blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators later determined the child’s mother left the toddler in the care of Tameke Wright, 22, and Lavar Harris, 37, both of Wilmington, Delaware. On Friday, both Wright and Harris were arrested and charged with murder by abuse or neglect. They are each being held on $100,000 cash bail.

Montco Dem. Drops Congress Bid in Late-Night Facebook Post

0
0

State Sen. Daylin Leach formally ended his congressional bid late Friday night in a Facebook post. He cited toxic partisanship in Washington, D.C., and political attacks against his family as the main drivers behind his decision.

“I first dreamed of being in Congress as a boy in middle school. The way I imagined it, I would be working with Bobby Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, and each day would be an exhilarating whirlwind of social change,” he wrote.

In December, the Montgomery County Democrat was accused by several female staffers of inappropriate sexual behavior, including unwanted touching and making uncomfortable remarks. He made no mention of those allegations in his Facebook post.

“Given that Congress has devolved into a poisonous miasma of dysfunction, I came to the conclusion a couple of years ago that my desire to go there was based on inertia and an overly romanticized vision of what life as a congressman could be," he wrote.

Read the whole statement here:

Leach initially suspended his congressional campaign in December 2017. At the time, he was running against 7th District Republican Rep. Pat Meehan. But in January, Meehan dropped his re-election bid after being accused of sexual harassment.

After the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued a redrawn congressional map, the 7th District - which included portions of Berks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster and Montgomery counties - was split into individual districts along county lines:

State Rep. Madeleine Dean dropped her bid last week for lieutenant governor and will instead run in Leach's own Montgomery County.

Meanwhile, Republicans are talking impeachment over the new map. Two lawsuits - one in the U.S. Supreme Court and another in U.S. District Court - were filed last week to prevent the map from taking effect in the upcoming midterm elections.

Republican leaders are also threatening to seek the impeachment of Democratic judges who, in an unprecedented move, redrew Pennsylvania’s district map without the consent of the state legislature. Constitutional law scholars say they know of no other state court that has ever thrown out boundaries over a partisan gerrymandering claim.

What Pennsylvania’s high court struck down was widely viewed as one of the nation’s most gerrymandered congressional maps. Republicans had drawn bizarrely contorted districts in 2011, breaking decades of precedent to do it.

Sleeping Driver Strikes and Kills Woman, Then Flees: Police

A man is accused of falling asleep at the wheel and striking and killing a woman before fleeing the scene of the crash.

Police say Nicholas Jahn, 34, of Washington Township, Gloucester County, was driving a Honda Pilot SUV southbound on Route 42 near the Ganttown Road intersection in Washington Township Saturday around 3:20 a.m. when he fell asleep at the wheel and struck 44-year-old Jawana Wilcox. Jahn then allegedly fled the scene of the crash.

Wilcox was found by a resident of the Golden Luck Motel on Route 42 and pronounced dead. Investigators suspect she was walking toward a bus stop near the motel moments before she was struck by the vehicle. An autopsy determined she died from blunt head trauma.

Jahn was arrested at his home Saturday afternoon. He is charged with vehicular homicide by falling asleep while driving, leaving the scene of a fatal crash and endangering a victim. Jahn, who is a teacher at the Durand Academy in Woodbury, New Jersey, was placed in jail pending a detention hearing. Police also say they found the hit-and-run vehicle at Jahn’s home.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and the Washington Township Police Department continue to investigate.

The ordeal started shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday in the Oxford Circle. Two masked gunman kicked open the victim’s front door. He and one other victim were tied up as the suspects demanded money at gunpoint, police said.

One of the victims managed to break free and ran to a nearby Wawa on Bustleton Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard to find help, investigators said.

A security officer on duty called police, who later found the second victim restrained and bleeding from his head.

He was immediately transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Investigators are looking for two black men, both dressed in dark clothing, masks and gloves. One man was armed with a black gun and other held a black semi-automatic weapon.

Classes to Reopen for Pa. School District After Bus Fire

0
0

Classes will resume in a Pennsylvania school district Monday after a raging fire tore through a garage and destroyed or damaged more than two dozen buses.

Officials announced all 11 Parkland School District schools will reopen Monday after they were closed Friday. Approximately 9,400 students are part of the district.

The buses caught fire around 3 a.m. Friday in a garage behind Orefield Middle School along Stadium Drive in South Whitehall Township.

When firefighters showed up a few minutes later, "there were flames coming out of all four sides plus the roof," Jeff Johnson, chief of the Tri-Clover Fire Co., said.

Firefighters had to retreat as tires exploded off their rims and flew through the walls of the building, taking metal siding with them, Johnson said. It took about an hour to put out the fire. No injuries were reported.

The garage was destroyed. The yellow paint and "Parkland" name on the buses were melted off, leaving smoldering metal shells.

In all, 25 buses were damaged, around one fifth of the district's fleet, the district said. Sixteen buses were totaled adding up to around $1.6 million in damage. The district has insurance.

Other school districts are loaning Parkland buses, and they are working to repair ones that they can, the district said. The district covers 72 square miles. Other Lehigh Valley districts have offered buses to spare for the time being.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
