Two people were killed while another was critically injured in an accident involving two cars and a tractor trailer in Berlin Township, New Jersey Tuesday morning.

The three vehicles were involved in a crash on White Horse Pike and Clementon Road shortly before 10:50 a.m. Both drivers of the two cars involved were pronounced dead at the scene while the passenger of one of the cars was seriously injured and is in critical condition. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt and remained at the scene.

Officials continue to investigate the crash. They have not released the identities of the victims.

Muslim Teen Unable to Play in Basketball Game Due to Hijab

A high school basketball player says she was forced to leave a game because she was wearing her Hijab.

Nasihah Thompson-King, a 16-year-old Muslim student at Mastery Shoemaker in Philadelphia and a member of the school’s Girls’ Basketball team, told NBC10 she was playing in a playoff game Friday when she was told by the referee she wouldn’t be allowed to continue playing with her head covering on.

“I was embarrassed because it was in the middle of a game,” Thompson-King said. “We have spectators watching and you chose to do that in front of all those people.”

Thompson-King said she’s been in 24 games prior to Friday and never had an issue wearing a Hijab. Jimmy Lynch, the head of the Philadelphia Public League, told NBC10 the same referee allowed her to be in a game while wearing her Hijab only two days before Friday’s incident.

According to league policy, athletes’ coaches are required to fill out a waiver so that the association can approve any head covering. On Tuesday, Lynch and seven state lawmakers sent a letter to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association asking for the waiver rule to be dropped for religious reasons.

The head of the PIAA told NBC10 Friday’s incident was due to a communication issue, not a religious one. He also said Thompson-King’s coach had three chances since November to fill out the form but never did so.

The State Association said there have been at least 15 athletes from the area who requested to wear head covering and all of them have been approved.
Lynch told NBC10 the form has been filled out and the teen will be able to play in the team’s playoff game Wednesday at Kensington High School.

Several of her supporters are expected to be in attendance. Thompson-King and her family say they are still disappointed that the PIAA implemented the rule in the first place however.

An NJ Transit bus and a garbage truck collided head on in New Jersey Tuesday afternoon, leaving the bus' driver dead and four other people with serious injuries.

Essex County prosecutors said the driver was pronounced dead after undergoing surgery folowing the No. 25 bus he was driving smashed into the garbage truck on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood about 1 p.m.

There were no passengers aboard the bus at the time; the truck's driver and three passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Chopper 4 footage from over the scene showed the front of the NJ Transit bus reduced to what looked like a vehicle in a junkyard heap, the front of it completely demolished as sand and other debris littered the roadway.

Dozens of first responders and law enforcement vehicles remained at the scene, near an NJ Transit bus depot, through the afternoon Tuesday. It wasn't clear if either vehicle was believed to have been driving on the wrong side of the street.

Springfield Avenue was be closed in both directions between Chancellor Avenue and Becker Terrace for several hours following the crash.

A crash involving four trucks forced motorists off the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Wednesday as police warned of major delays.

The two big rigs and two box trucks collided in the northbound lanes of the Northeast Extension near milepost 40.8 in Milford Township Bucks County around 10:20 a.m.

Five people suffered injuries. The extent of their injuries wasn’t immediately clear.

Police blocked the northbound turnpike at the Lansdale Interchange (Exit 31), forcing traffic onto other roads. They warned of big delays.

Drivers had to take Route 63 east to Route 202 north to Route 309 north to Route 663 south to get back on the extension at the Quakertown Interchange (Exit 44), Pennsylvania State Police said.

The closure is expected to last for hours. Troopers also need to get the people stuck in a long backup behind the wreck off the highway, which could take some time, police said.

5 to Watch: Vonn, Shiffrin Finally Face Off at Skiing Finale

0
0

These Winter Olympics haven’t always been kind to Americans, but there might be no bigger day for Team USA at the Pyeongchang Games than the one that finally sees Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn share the mountain.

It’s the matchup we’ve been waiting for since Vonn recovered from the years of injuries that kept her out of the Sochi Games, where Shiffrin made her Olympic debut and won gold. The Alpine combined will give the two greats a chance to play to their strengths as they duke it out down the hill.

Beyond that pair of stellar skiers, there are a handful of medals that the U.S. could grab, including at least a silver in the women’s hockey finale — the latest installment in one of hockey’s deepest rivalries.

A trio of American freestyle skiers are in pole position going into the men’s halfpipe finals, and what sport is more American than big air snowboarding? The first big air Olympic champion will be crowned tonight.

So break out the Stars and Stripes and settle in for some of the best action the Olympics has to offer.

These are the stories you need to follow in Pyeongchang over the next 24 hours:

Finally: Shiffrin vs. Vonn

The past and future of American skiing are about to face off for the only time at the Pyeongchang Olympics, and maybe any Olympics.

Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin will both race in the women’s Alpine combined, the last individual Alpine skiing event at the Games, in what's turned out to be their only head-to-head matchup.

Thursday's two-legged event (the first airs Wednesday night in the U.S.) plays to both of their strengths: Vonn’s best event is downhill, Shiffrin's the slalom.

Both competitors were expected to set up camp atop the podium this year, with hopes for Shiffrin running especially high. But Shiffrin and Vonn both lost races they were favored to win, and Shiffrin’s Olympics got even more disappointing when she bowed out of two races after high winds compressed the racing schedule. The one gold medal she has so far might be the pinnacle of another skier’s career, but it’s a disappointing haul for Shiffrin, 22, who had talked in 2014 of winning five gold medals here.

Vonn is the comeback story of the Games. She won gold and bronze in Vancouver but injuries kept her out of Sochi; she went through intense rehab to return to the top of the sport. She took bronze in the downhill Wednesday, finishing 0.47 seconds behind her Italian rival Sofia Goggia, who won gold.

This will likely be the only time she and Shiffrin race each other on the world’s biggest stage — Vonn indicated she will not return to the Olympics in 2022.

Watch the downhill run of the women’s Alpine combined live during NBC10’s primetime coverage Wednesday, which begins at 8 p.m. ET, or on digital platforms at 9:30 p.m. ET Wednesday by tapping here.

Watch the slalom run on NBC10 or on digital platforms at 1 a.m. ET Thursday by tapping here.

USA, Canada Set for 'Battle of the Ages'

The American women who suit up for USA Hockey had Feb. 22 circled on their calendars as soon as the 2018 Olympic schedule was announced. It’s the day of the women’s hockey gold medal game, when they can get revenge over Canada.

The bitter rivalry between the U.S. and Canada has all but defined Olympic women’s hockey. They’re so much stronger than other countries that the two teams they play in the round-robin games automatically go through to the playoffs. Not that it’s much help, since Canada and the U.S. are about to face off in the gold medal match for the sixth time in seven Games.

Look at the Olympics head-to-head and Canada has the clear advantage over the U.S. They've won four gold medals to Team USA’s one, and beat the U.S. in pool play last week, 2-1.

But the Americans believe they should have won gold in 2014, when Canada rallied from two goals down with less than four minutes to play and won in overtime.

"This is the game we've been dreaming of and to have another opportunity to get back here, it's huge," star Hilary Knight said after the team punched its ticket to yet another final.

Watch live on NBCSN at 11:10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, or on digital platforms by tapping here.

Sweeping the Halfpipe?

Four years ago, an American won gold in the men’s ski halfpipe. This year, Americans stand a good chance of sweeping all three medals.

Aaron Blunck, Alex Ferreira and Torin Yater-Wallace qualified for the finals with the Top 3 scores, and the fourth member of the U.S. team, David Wise, qualified as well.

But it would be smart to bet on Wise, who took gold in the event at the Sochi Olympics and at last month's X Games, sealing that winning run with a 1260-degree spin. (The two other guys on that X Games podium? Ferreira and Yater-Wallace.)

But the rest of the world knows how to throw down at the Olympics, too. Canada’s Mike Riddle won silver in Sochi and Kevin Rolland, "the Flying Frenchman," got the bronze. They’ll be in the final, too.

Regular ski halfpipe viewers will be keeping an eye out for any competitors who don’t try any tricks at all, like Elizabeth Swaney, a California woman of Hungarian descent who only managed to peek above the lip of the halfpipe on her run, winning equal parts fascination and condemnation for competing in the Olympics.

Watch the men’s ski halfpipe live during NBC10’s primetime coverage Wednesday, which begins at 8 p.m. ET, or on digital platforms at 9:30 p.m. ET by tapping here.

Big Air’s Big Finish

The first big air snowboarding competition at the Olympics will conclude Thursday (Wednesday night in the U.S.) with more of the soaring spins that made the women’s qualifying rounds so fun to watch.

Weather permitting, that is. The event was moved up a day to avoid high winds forecast for Friday, after winds messed with snowboarders in slopestyle, another high-flying Olympic competition.

But in the calm weather during qualifying, Austrian Anna Gasser set the big air bar very high, corkscrewing herself around three times as she flew through the air and getting a 98 from judges. A pair of Japanese snowboarders, Yuka Fujimori and Reira Iwabuchi, rounded out the top three on Monday.

Jamie Anderson, after notching a 90 in qualifying, could be the American to beat her. She knows how to win at the Olympics, taking her second slopestyle gold last week.

Watch the women’s Big Air finals live on digital platforms at 7:30 p.m. ET Wednesday by tapping here.

Third Gold’s the Charm

The last day of individual Alpine skiing at the 2018 Winter Games could bring a moment of rare greatness.

Austria’s Marcel Hirscher won the Alpine combined and giant slalom events already, and he’ll be in men’s slalom on Thursday (Wednesday night in the U.S.).

Only three people have won three Alpine gold medals at the Olympics, the last in 2002, so another gold for Hirscher would be a big deal. Fortunately for Hirscher, slalom is his best event. Six of his 10 world cup victories since December have come in slalom.

The race is also the last chance for members of the American men’s Alpine ski team, who haven’t won a medal at these Olympics. Ted Ligety has the best shot, but he couldn’t win his signature event, the giant slalom, and he probably won’t win the slalom, either.

Watch the first run of the men’s slalom live during NBC10’s primetime coverage Wednesday, which begins at 8 p.m. ET, or on digital platforms by tapping here.

Watch the second run of the men’s slalom live on NBC10 beginning at 11:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, and on digital platforms by tapping here.

The End of Cash Bail in Philly? DA to Issue Policy Statement

0
0

Philadelphia’s new District Attorney Larry Krasner is set to make a major announcement Wednesday on one of his key campaign promises — reforming the cash bail system.

The announcement comes three weeks after Philadelphia City Council passed a resolution calling on the DA and state officials to “reduce reliance” on cash bail, which it called a burden on low-income defendants and a purveyor of poverty.

Many people in Philadelphia "plead guilty because they want that pressure of incarceration off of them," Councilman Curtis Jones said during an impassioned speech in January. "They lose their families, dignity and respect, and it creates a catastrophic series of events they can’t get out of it."

Jones, co-chair of the criminal justice reform committee, framed bail as a 1,000-year-old medieval tool that badly needs a "tune up."

Of the 4,359 total offenders held pretrial in Philadelphia jails, nearly 33 percent are held because they cannot afford cash bail, according to a report issued by Philadelphia City Controller Alan Butkovitz. More than half remain jailed for longer than 30 days.

"The direct costs of incarceration can exceed $20,700 for a single bed," the report concluded.

Nationally, the average bail has skyrocketed to between $25,000 and $55,000 per defendant, according to a Princeton University study. But in Philadelphia, which has the fourth largest jail population of the major U.S. cities, only about 50 percent of defendants were able to post bail when it was set at $5,000 or less.

In 1991, Washington, D.C., ended its bail bond system and now releases nearly 90 percent of pretrial defendants. Philadelphia officials have repeatedly called for a similar program to be instituted here as crime rates continue to drop throughout the city.

City officials have offered various alternatives to the bail bond system for low level offenders, including issuing citations instead of arrests and monitoring defendants who are on bail.

It remains unclear what new policies could be instituted, but NBC10 will update this story when Krasner makes his announcement at 3 p.m. Please check for updates.

Pregnant Mom Stabbed to Death While Kids Were at Home

Authorities in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania are searching for a suspect wanted for the brutal killing of a mother and her unborn baby on Monday in Elkins Park.

Just after 3:00 a.m., Cheltenham Township police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Mather Way for a reported argument. When they arrived, officers located a woman dead in the master bedroom. She sustained multiple stab wounds, police said.

Authorities identified the woman as 31-year-old Ebony N. White. An autopsy revealed that White was pregnant with a boy. Both of their deaths have been ruled homicide.

White's two other children, ages 7 and 12, were in the apartment at the time of the killings, but were not harmed physically.

The stabbing occurred in the Lynnewood Gardens Apartment Community, a sprawling 122-acre apartment community popular for its location directly on the border of Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties.

Officials declined to provide additional information about the incident citing the active investigation, but a law enforcement source revealed  that the murders appear to be domestic in nature and that they are searching only for a single suspect at this point.

Police are asking anyone with information about this homicide to contact the Cheltenham Township Police Department at 215-885-1600 or the Montgomery County Detective Bureau at 610-278-3368.

Uber Launches 'Express Pool' Feature in Philly

Uber is launching a new feature Thursday in Philadelphia that expands on its current "Pool" feature, matching ride-seekers in similar locations and having them meet in a certain location.

The new feature, called Express Pool, is expected to cut the cost even further, the company said in a release.

Uber Pool, launched in 2014, cut costs for riders by allowing them to share a driver.

Here's how it'll work:

  • After requesting an Express Pool, the app will ask riders to wait a few minutes to be matched with up to three other passengers in their area.
  • Each passenger will then walk a short distance to a mutual pick-up site.
  • The riders will be dropped off in one location within a few blocks of each of their destinations.

The company said it hopes this will lead to better ride-sharing matches and more direct routes.

Express Pool has already been piloting in San Francisco and Boston, and becomes available in other major cities across the country throughout the week.

Woman Killed, 2 Women, 3 Kids Hurt After Gunman Fires at Van

A woman died from her injuries while two other women as well as three children were hurt after a gunman fired shots at a van in the Ogontz section of Philadelphia Wednesday night.

Police say a 23-year-old woman was driving a van along Broad Street and Grange Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when a gunman opened fire.

At least five gunshots struck the driver’s side of the van and the female driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing into a nearby building on the 5800 block of Old York Road. The woman, who was shot at least once, was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. The woman’s five passengers, two women in their 20s, and two girls and a boy between the ages of 2 and 6, were also injured in the crash though police say none of them were shot. The five passengers were taken to Einstein Hospital and are in stable condition.

Police have not released a description of the gunman but say he or she may have been driving in a dark colored vehicle based on witness accounts. Witnesses say that vehicle was last seen traveling north on the 5800 block of Broad Street. The shooting and crash occurred in an area with several businesses and investigators are currently checking for surveillance video.

Police have not released the victim’s identity but say the van she was driving is registered in her family’s name. They also say the address of the registration may be about a mile away from the location of the shooting.

Horace Timmons, the uncle of the woman who died, told NBC10 the injured passengers included the victim's twin sister as well as her niece and nephew.

"She's a bright young lady," Timmons said. "Graduated with honors from high school. Was currently working for the school board and UPS. She had two jobs. She was about to move into her own place. Conscientious. Good hearted. Didn't deserve for this to happen to her."

If you have any information on the shooting, please call Philadelphia police.

      WHAT YOU MISSED YESTERDAY

Man Dies in Delco House Fire: A man died in a Delaware County house fire early Wednesday morning. The three-alarm fire started at a home on Pittman Avenue in Collingdale, Pennsylvania shortly after 6 a.m. and a neighbor called 911. The flames caused the home to collapse. Smoke from the fire filled the air for several blocks. Michael Olcese, a 65-year-old retired postal worker and grandfather, lived at the home alone. Responding firefighters searched the home for hours after the fire was brought under control. They found Olcese's body below the living room.

Philly DA Ends Cash Bail for Low-Level Offenses: Philadelphia’s new District Attorney Larry Krasner on Wednesday proclaimed the end of cash bail requirements for low-level offenses effective immediately. "There is absolutely no reason why someone who will show up for court, is not a flight risk, and is no threat to their neighbors and community, needs to sit in jail for days because they can't post a small amount of bail," Krasner said. The announcement comes three weeks after Philadelphia City Council passed a resolution calling on the DA and state officials to “reduce reliance” on cash bail, which it called a burden on low-income defendants and a purveyor of poverty. Moving forward, the district attorney's office will recommend that cash bail not be set for people arrested for one of 25 non-violent offenses outlined by the district attorney's office. These include driving under the influence, personal use marijuana possession, retail theft, forgery, prostitution and burglary where no one is present.

          AROUND THE WORLD

US Women Beat Canada for First Olympic Hockey Gold Since 1998: Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson skated slowly back and forth toward the net, showing forehand, then leaning quickly to the left to fake a backhand that pulled Canadian goalie Shannon Szabados out of the crease. On the sport's biggest stage, against the Americans' greatest rival, with all her teammates leaning eagerly over the boards watching her every move, the three-time Olympian came back to her forehand to finish off a dazzling, triple-deke move by sliding the puck into the net past the outstretched glove of Szabados for the deciding goal in the sixth round of a shootout thriller. The Americans piled over the boards, throwing gloves in the air before piling on top of Rooney on the ice — 20 years after their last gold medal in women's hockey and 38 years to the day after the men's famous "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet team in group play at Lake Placid.
