Safety concerns lingered Monday in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood, where a massive fire gutted a building on the corner of Chestnut and 3rd streets over the weekend.

The historic building, located at 239 Chestnut St., has been declared “imminently dangerous,” the Department of Licenses and Inspection told NBC10.

The owner of the building has been ordered remove an outdoor fire escape in hopes of relieving some structural pressure and prevent crumbling.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. Sunday, drawing about 400 firefighters, Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said.

"We grabbed our wallet, keys, my glasses, our shoes, our dog and literally ran downstairs," said Jenna Federico. "We felt all the smoke around us going down the stairs."

The multi-use building houses residents on the upper floors and a pizza shop on the street level.

Around 160 people were evacuated. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries but were later released from the hospital. Nine cats and four birds died in the fire, the Red Paw Relief Team said. Several more pets were rescued but are currently displaced.

Former Teacher Remembers Victim of Florida HS Shooting

The former teacher of one of the 17 victims of the Florida high school massacre is speaking out about the young life lost.

“She was a sweet little thing,” said Sue Flyer. “Very bright.”

Before moving to Florida with her family, 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff spent part of her childhood in New Jersey. Flyer taught Alhadeff in Kindergarten at the former Jewish Community Day School in Northfield, New Jersey. She still has Alhadeff’s Kindergarten progress report which described her as a “delight to have in the classroom.”

Nearly a decade later, Flyer has been mourning her former student after learning she was one of the lives lost during last week’s massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

“It’s heartbreaking if you don’t know them and then when you realize who it is, it’s just horrible,” Flyer said.

Flyer, who has been a teacher for more than 30 years, said Alhadeff made a lasting impression.

“She was special,” Flyer said. “She was just warm and nice and there are certain children you remember forever. And she was just one of them.”

Linda Kulp, who served as Vice President of the Jewish Community Day School, has been encouraging people to donate to a GoFundMe Page raising money for a scholarship in Alhadeff’s memory that her soccer club is in the process of establishing.

“We wanted to let her family and community know that even as far back as her youngest roots we remember her and we want to honor that memory," Kulp said.

A New Jersey rabbi is one of three people charged in a human trafficking and child prostitution case of a teenage girl, authorities say.

Prosecutors say Gabriella Colon, 18, and Richard Ortiz, 23, both of the Bronx, sexually exploited a 17-year-old girl out of an East Brunswick hotel. Investigators said Rabbi Aryeh Goodman, 35, was among about 30 men who paid to have sex with the teen girl.

Goodman is charged with engaging in prostitution with a child and endangering the welfare of a child, prosecutors said. Colon and Ortiz are charged with human trafficking, conspiracy to commit human trafficking, promoting prostitution of a child, conspiracy to promote prostitution of a child, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal restraint, and a number of child pornography offenses including the manufacturing, distribution and possession of pornography, according to prosecutors.

Attorney information for the three was not immediately known.

Authorities said Goodman runs a religious learning center out of his East Brunswick home and may have affiliation with another Chabad on Lexington Avenue in the Township.

The investigation is ongoing.

5 to Watch: Do Or Die for US Men's Hockey, #ShibSibs Part 2

America's #ShibSibs retake the ice with a chance at a medal in the second part of the ice dance competition. Maddie Bowman looks to repeat her gold medal performance from Sochi in the women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe. And the men’s U.S. ice hockey team, featuring a handful of Philly-area athletes, opens the elimination round against Slovakia.

Here’s what you need to see in the next 24 hours in Pyeongchang:

U.S. Men’s Ice Hockey Take on Slovakia

If the U.S. men’s hockey team is going to pull off a miracle, their magic run must start on Tuesday. The Americans face Slovakia in the first round of the elimination tournament.

The Americans beat Slovakia 2-1 in group play last week. It was America’s only win in group play. The winner will face the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. The Czech Republic moved straight to the quarterfinals by winning its group.

In its win over Slovakia last week, the U.S. took advantage of a strong power play. Ryan Donato scored twice on the power play, including a third-period goal that broke a 1-1 tie and gave America the victory.

Donato, who plays college hockey for Harvard, is part of a ragtag team of Americans hoping to compete for a medal. With NHL players sitting out these Olympics, the U.S. team is made up of mostly college kids and castoffs who couldn’t make the NHL. Included on the roster are five players from Pennsylvania and New Jersey: Bensalem's Ryan Gunderson, Abington's Chad Kolarik, Yardley's Brian O'Neill, Trenton's Bobby Sanguinetti and Erie's Ryan Zapolski.

For the Donato family, though, that’s familiar territory: His father Ted scored four goals for the 1992 United States hockey team that finished fourth in Albertville while he was a student at Harvard. That was one of the last Olympic teams that didn’t include NHL players — until now.

Other match-ups in the elimination round: Slovenia vs. Norway, Finland vs. South Korea and Switzerland vs. Germany.

Hubbell and Donohue, Shib Sibs Hope to Topple Canadian Ice Dance Favorites

Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir hope to regain their 2010 Olympic ice dance title when they skate in the free dance on Tuesday (Monday night in the United States), the second part of the ice dance competition.

Virtue and Moir, who helped Canada win a gold medal in Pyeongchang in the team event, were in first place after the short program, with 83.67. Their main rivals, France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, were in second — despite Papadakis suffering a wardrobe malfunction during their routine, and struggling to keep her top from falling down throughout the routine.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who finished eighth in the Sochi Games and then won their first national title together in 2015, were in seventh place.

America’s Maddie Bowman Defends Halfpipe Gold

Defending U.S. Olympic champion Maddie Bowman is looking to repeat her Sochi result in the women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe. She heads a strong contingent of American contenders, which includes Brita Sigourney, the first women to land a 1080 in a competition halfpipe, and Annalisa Drew, who finished fourth in qualifying. Sigourney finished third in qualifying, Drew finished fourth and Bowman finished sixth.

American Devin Logan, a silver medal winner in Sochi for slopestyle, finished 15th in the qualifying run and failed to advance to the final.

Tough competition is expected from Canada’s Cassie Sharpe, known for her bold tricks, and France’s Marie Martinod, a silver medal winner in Sochi.

Jamie Gruebel Poser Steers Toward Another Medal

New Jersey-born and Pennsylvania-raised Jamie Greubel Poser looks to build off her 2014 bronze medal by going for golden speed with Aja Evans in the women's bobsled.

The duo races in Heats 1 and 2 Tuesday morning ET. Greubel Poser and Evans had mixed results in training runs with a No. 1 finish and three other Top 3 finishes to go along with two slower runs.

Fellow Americans Elana Meyers Taylor and Lauren Gibbs also look to race for gold.

The duos will be looking for two good runs each that will help place them in position to medal during Wednesday's finals.

Team USA Fights for Medal Round Spot vs. South Korea in Women's Curling

If the United States is going to have a shot at a medal in curling, its women’s team needs to finish strong. With two games left against two of the top teams, they’re fighting for the last spot in the medal round.

That fight begins against South Korea on Tuesday.

The Top 4 teams in round-robin standings advance to the medal round. Entering the final stretch of round-robin play, the U.S. is tied for fourth place.

The Americans are on a run. They’ve won three of their last four matches to improve to a 4-3 record, including wins over Denmark and China on Monday.

Wins in their final two matches would guarantee life after round robin play. Even winning one of two could allow them to sneak forward. But they’re facing two of the top teams - South Korea is in first place at 5-1, and Sweden is tied for second at 5-2.

Federal authorities say a Delaware man snapped a selfie before stealing part of a $4.5 million statue at a Philadelphia museum.

According to an arrest affidavit filed Friday, 24-year-old Michael Rohana was attending an Ugly Sweater Party at the Franklin Institute Dec. 21 when he entered the “Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor” exhibit.

Authorities say Rohana took photos while posing next to a statue known as “The Cavalryman,” and then snapped off the statue’s left thumb.

Museum staff noticed the missing thumb Jan. 8, and the FBI traced it to Rohana five days later. It is unclear if he has legal representation.

A museum spokeswoman says the statue will be repaired. She says a security contractor did not follow standard procedures the night of the alleged theft.

          AROUND THE WORLD

Kremlin Dismisses US Election Indictment as Lacking Evidence: Russian officials had disdainful words Saturday for a U.S. indictment that charged 13 Russians with interfering in the 2016 presidential election. Children's stories, the plot of a preposterous Hollywood movie and "just blabber" were a few of the glib analogies they pressed into service. The language, while dismissive, suggested that Russia feels cornered by the unrelenting allegations that the Kremlin had a role in President Donald Trump's election. Repeated denials and hope that the intrigue would fade away have been Moscow's strategy for maintaining the popular expectation that its ties with Washington would improve under Trump. Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials have deflected the suspicion that Trump colluded with Moscow and the evidence of Russians seeding social media platforms with pro-Trump content with indignant cries of "Russophobia" — a default argument that blames the election scandal to an outdated, Cold War view of Russia as a land of inherently devious plotters. "The story is straight from a Hollywood crime comedy, probably with the title '13 Friends of Putin'," Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house of Russia's parliament, said.

New Jersey School District Adds Armed Police Officers

          0

An entire school district in New Jersey has voted to roll out new security measures in the wake of the deadly Florida high school shooting, and now there are additional calls from other districts in the Garden State for similar tactics.

All 11 schools in the East Brunswick district will soon start to see armed police officers stationed outside. However, some people say the idea of having guns at schools is not what they want students learning while others say they want to see security changes at their district.

“It’s the same thing as fighting fire with fire,” eighth-grader Ray Leybovich said. “It’s not going to help.”

Her mother adding, “I’m not happy about guns all together.”

On Thursday, a day after a gunman opened fire inside a Florida high school, killing 17 people and injuring 15 others, the East Brunswick school board voted to post armed guards outside all entrances. The next day a high schooler there was arrested for allegedly making terroristic threats while all Nutley schools were closed Friday after what officials described as a “security threat” after an alarming video was posted online.

          [[474270663, C]]

That threat was enough for one mother to craft a letter to leaders requesting armed guards for schools in Nutley.

“It was scary. It was paralyzing,” Erica Zarro said. “If we can’t stop insane people from having guns then have a sane person there to protect them.”

Nutley schools, which are on break this week, have not responded to NBC 4 New York for comment.

          [[474396143, C]]

Meanwhile, the mayor of Mahway, Bill Laforet, posted on Facebook Monday saying he wants armed officers at schools in his town. Leaders there were criticized last week for not clearly notifying parents about a threat made in November to shoot up a middle school there on Friday.

Mahwah officials say there is no threat, but officers will be stationed at the school on Friday as a precaution.
