A triple shooting in Southwest Philadelphia Sunday killed one person and injured two others. Police got the first call just before 2 p.m., and when they responded to 75th Street and Elmwood Avenue, they found a 23-year-old man who had been shot in the neck, torso and leg lying next to a green 2006 Volvo. Another man, 24, had been shot in the buttocks. Both were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where the first victim was pronounced dead and the second treated and released. A third victim, 21, came to the same hospital a little later with gunshot wounds to the right thigh and calf. His condition was not released. WHAT YOU MISSED YESTERDAY

Newly Released Inmate Shot After Attacking Corrections Officer: A Correctional Officer shot a man who police say tried to carjack him less than an hour after being released from a Philadelphia jail. Jamal Bennett, 26, was discharged from the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on the 8000 block of State Road around 10:30 p.m. Friday. About 45 minutes later, Bennett allegedly approached 66-year-old Michael Maratea, a veteran correctional officer who was just getting off duty, in the facility’s parking lot. Maratea told Bennett to stop several times but he kept approaching his car, officials said. The two men then fought, according to investigators. During the struggle, Maratea managed to get inside his car and grab his service weapon, officials said. Bennett allegedly tried to grab Maratea’s gun. Maratea then fired the weapon and shot Bennett once in the chest, according to investigators. Bennett was taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital where he is in critical condition. Maratea was also taken to Aria-Torresdale and treated for both head and neck pain. He was later released.

Matthew McConaughey Congratulates Nick Foles: Alright, alright, alright, actor Matthew McConaughey is an Eagles fan, or at least a Nick Foles fan. John Bridges, the managing editor of the Austin American-Statesman newspaper, tweeted out this photo earlier today showing a full-page ad McConaughey purchased to congratulate Austin, Texas native Nick Foles on winning the Super Bowl one week ago. McConaughey was born in nearby Uvalde, Texas, but resides and went to college in Austin, where Foles was born and raised. Some have said that there needs to be a movie made about the Philadelphia Eagles season. Perhaps there will be some competition between Bradley Cooper and McConaughey for the role of the MVP.

Emergency Teams Search for Victims of Russian Plane Crash: Emergency teams are combing snowy fields outside Moscow for debris of a Russian airliner that crashed and the remains of the 71 people who died. The An-148 twin-engine regional jet bound for Orsk in the southern Urals went down minutes after taking off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport Sunday. All 65 passengers and 6 crew on board were killed. Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said Monday the search for victims' remains will take a week. He said that the emergency teams already have found the plane's flight data recorder, which is crucial for determining the crash's cause. Investigators quickly ruled out a terror attack, but will not speculate on possible reasons for the crash.

5 to Watch: Summer Sets Luge Record & Stars on Skates

While Mikaela Shiffrin and Team USA’s other alpine skiers have been temporarily sidelined by high winds, American snowboarders are providing the Pyeongchang thrills. Competing in snowboarding slopestyle, teenager Red Gerard on Sunday won America’s first gold medal in Pyeongchang. Now, Chloe Kim, another 17-year-old, will try to match him in women’s halfpipe. And Shaun White, who won his first gold medal when Gerard and Kim were just 5 years old, takes the slopes in his fourth Olympic games in the men’s halfpipe qualifying.

Kim and White highlight an action-packed day that includes speedskaters Shani Davis, Joey Mantia and Maame Biney, a women’s hockey game between Team USA and the Olympic Athletes from Russia and a Pennsylvania luger's record run for a medal.

Here’s what you need to watch in Pyeongchang over the next 24 hours:

Kim Goes for Gold, White Makes Pyeongchang Debut

Chloe Kim is a 17-year-old sensation appearing in her first Olympics. Shaun White is one of the most decorated snowboarders ever, appearing in his fourth Olympics. Kim will go for her first gold medal on Tuesday (Monday night in the U.S.), and White will make his Pyeongchang debut.

Kim, whose parents are from South Korea, has dominated the women’s halfpipe in the years since the Sochi Games, when she was too young to compete. In 2016, she became the first woman to land back-to-back 1080s in a halfpipe contest. She began snowboarding at age 4 with her father, but does not like snow.

"Actually, I hate it," Kim told Sports Illustrated in January. "I grew up in Southern California.”

White won gold medals in the men’s halfpipe in his first two Olympics, but finished fourth in Sochi in 2014. He’s looking for redemption in Pyeongchang. He’ll compete in qualifying on Tuesday (Monday night in the U.S.), and then go for a medal on Wednesday if he advances.

Watch both Kim and White live during NBC10’s primetime coverage at 8 p.m. ET.

Summer Britcher Sets Record, But Can't Unseat Powerhouse Germans

U.S. luge medalist Erin Hamlin, America’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony, is in the mix for the women’s singles luge competition in Pyeongchang. Hamlin, a four-time Olympian, won the bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics, the first U.S. athlete to win an Olympics singles luge medal in the sports’ 50-year Olympic history.

But the strongest U.S. woman this season has been Sochi Olympian Summer Britcher. The Glen Rock, Pennsylvania native finished 15th four years ago. With five individual career victories, Britcher is the all-time leader in USA Luge singles history.

Britcher set a course record on her second run of the day, but it couldn't make up for a mediocre debut run — landing her in ninth place overall. Hamlin wound up in fifth place.

Watch the full competition — which took place at 5 a.m. Monday — by tapping here.

U.S. Women’s Hockey Continues Quest for Gold vs. Russians

The U.S. women’s hockey team won its opening game in Pyeongchang against Finland, 3-1, on Sunday. Now they face the Olympic Athletes from Russia, as the Russians are being referred to in Pyeongchang. The Russians are the youngest team in the tournament, with less experience and almost an entirely new roster from the team that played in four years ago in Sochi.

The Americans have failed to win a gold medal since the sport was added to the Games in 1998. Most heartbreaking was their loss to powerhouse Canada in the gold medal game at Sochi. The Canadians, their longtime rivals, have won four straight gold medals.

Watch live on NBCSN at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday or on digital platforms.

Speedskater Biney Is America’s Best Hope In 500m Short Track

China’s Fan Kexin, who has six world medals in 500-meter short track speed skating, slipped in the semifinals at the Sochi Olympics four years ago, costing her a shot at a medal. Now, she’s got another shot at a gold medal.

Her stiffest American competition? The Ghana-born Maame Biney the first black woman to qualify for a U.S. Olympic short track team. Biney learned to skate after moving to the United States at age 5. Another top contender, Choi Min-jeong, is from South Korea.

Watch live on digital platforms beginning at 5 a.m. Tuesday, or during NBC10’s daytime Olympics coverage at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Americans Speedskaters Shani Davis and Joey Mantia Takes Ice in 1500m Medal Event

Four-time Olympic medalist Shani Davis may be the more recognizable name in the Men’s 1500-meter, but it’s American Joey Mantia who is most likely to challenge for a medal.

Mantia, from Ocala, Florida, struggled in Sochi, finishing 15th in the 1000-meter race and 22nd in his best event, the 1500-meter. Calling the experience "a complete disaster,” Mantia is hoping to find his way to the medal podium in Pyeongchang.

The international field will be headlined by the Netherlands’ Kjeld Nuis, the reigning 1500-meter world champion, and his teammate Koen Verweij, who returned from a kidney injury that kept him from training for a year.

Watch live at 6 a.m. Tuesday on digital platforms, or during NBC10’s daytime Olympics coverage at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Pa. Democrats Propose New Election Map Plan

Top Democratic state lawmakers say they want to work with Gov. Tom Wolf in presenting a consensus Democratic plan of congressional districts to Supreme Court justices who are poised to impose new boundaries.

Sen. Jay Costa and Rep. Frank Dermody said Monday that they hope to meet with Wolf, as early as Tuesday. A redrawn map of Pennsylvania districts could boost Democrats nationally in their quest to take control of the U.S. House.

The Democratic-majority state Supreme Court threw out Pennsylvania's GOP-drawn congressional map because of partisan gerrymandering. Justices have promised to produce a new map by Feb. 19 and could consider proposals by Wolf, lawmakers and other parties to the gerrymandering case.

Costa and Dermody have urged Wolf to reject a Republican map submitted to him three days ago.

NJ Governor Creates Commission on Puerto Rico Relief

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order Monday creating a commission that will collaborate with state and federal agencies to speed up the relief efforts for displaced Puerto Ricans who relocated to the state following Hurricane Maria.

The 18-member joint commission will help about 30,000 Puerto Ricans who have taken refuge in New Jersey by directing state agencies to quickly help those who were displaced after Hurricane Maria hit the island last year, Murphy said in a statement.

“It is unacceptable that five months after Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico, so many of our fellow Americans are still feeling the impacts of the storm,” Murphy said, adding that federal response to the September hurricane has been “insufficient.”

The newly-formed commission will also look into how New Jersey can help Puerto Rico recover from the estimated $100 billion in damage it sustained.

In December, Murphy, who was at that time the governor-elect, traveled to Puerto Rico with state officials, business communities and religious groups to assess the damage left behind by Hurricane Maria and promised the governor of Puerto Rico he would continue relief efforts.

Murphy’s mandate will task the commission with examining New Jersey-based resources available to students and professors who evacuated the island or remain unable to complete their coursework in Puerto Rico. The group will also review the moratorium on mortgage and reverse mortgage foreclosures in Puerto Rico that is set to expire on March 19.

The commission will also look into power generation on the island and the recruitment of volunteer lawyers to look into denial appeals of FEMA benefits.

Murphy is also ordering the commission to identify opportunities for New Jerseyans to visit Puerto Rico in an effort to increase tourism to the island.

New Jersey is home to about 600,000 Puerto Ricans — the third largest concentration of Puerto Ricans in the United States.

Olympian Adam Rippon Spent Youth Training in Philly Burbs

More than a decade before Olympics bronze medalist Adam Rippon showed his wizardry on the ice in Pyeongchang, he spent his teenage years living and training in the Philadelphia suburbs with coach Yelena Sergeeva.

For seven years of his youth, Rippon was Sergeeva’s star student.

“He really right away showed exceptional talent in his movements, ability to move, his personality and his ability to work hard,” Sergeeva said.

Sergeeva, who is Russian, started coaching Rippon at rinks in the Philadelphia suburbs when he was 10. It was a commitment not only from Rippon but from his family. Originally from Clarks Summit, a suburb of Scranton, Rippon’s mother, Kelly, would drive him two hours each way, every other day, to the Philadelphia area to train with Sergeeva.

"I'd like to be in the Olympics and everything, but I think I should take it one step at a time," Rippon said at the time.

By 13, he was headed to the junior nationals.

"Really from the start we realized that he had a special ability,” Kelly Rippon said in 2002.

Rippon would go on to live with his coach for three and a half years – until he was 17 – all in an effort to chase his dream.

Even being in the Philadelphia area, rather than the Scranton area, Rippon and Sergeeva struggled to find quality ice time, going from rink to rink just to find a place to skate.

It would take him until he was 28 to make his first Olympic team. He made the most of the opportunity, skating a stunning free skate to help Team USA earn team bronze in figure skating.

Sergeeva watched every moment with pride for her former student.

"I was watching, I was very happy," she said. “I always knew he was an Olympian, always knew his talent could be a (champion)."

Rippon’s championship way stays with him off the ice. He sent flowers to thank Sergeeva a few weeks back, she said.

He gets another chance at gold when men’s individual figure skating begins Thursday night ET.

NY Chelsea Bomber's Dad Calls Him 'Terrorist' Before Sentencing

          0
          0

The father of the 30-year-old man convicted in the New York and New Jersey bombings that injured dozens of people calls his son a "terrorist" in an exclusive interview with News 4 New York, and says the FBI let America down.

Mohammad Rahami, father of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, told News 4 on Monday -- one day before his son was to be sentenced in the bombings -- that he personally contacted the FBI in 2014 with concerns that his son could be a terrorist.

"After two months, they say, 'Your son is not doing any act like a terrorist,'" said Rahami. "I said, 'You sure he not doing anything?' He say, 'Yeah, is good news.'"

Ahmad Rahimi was convicted last October of planting two pressure-cooker bombs on New York City streets. Dozens of videos tracked his movements as he dragged the bombs in suitcases through Manhattan streets, and they also captured the explosion at 23rd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood that injured 30 people. The second bomb didn't detonate.

The government called it a miracle that nobody was killed by the explosive, which scattered ball bearings meant to serve as shrapnel.

Rahami said Monday that his son "did it as a terrorist... this is terrorist."

He added, "My son, he did wrong, and the FBI did the wrong, too. The government is responsible for that reason. They have the power to stop the crime and they did not stop the crime."

Rahami claims the FBI contacted him after the bombing to apologize for "not doing our job," and that he responded, "It's too late."

Rahami says his family has been harassed by people calling them terrorists. In response, "I say I did my job. I am the top of my family, I did my job. You have to go to the government as to why they did not stop this child."

News 4 has reached out to the FBI for a response on Rahami's statements Monday. Previously, however, an FBI official told The Associated Press that Rahami "at no time" discussed his son's radicalization or potential interest in al-Qaida, the Taliban or their propaganda in his interviews with FBI agents.

Rahami says his son is now remorseful.

"He said to me, 'I'm sorry,'" said Rahami. "He told me, 'Thank God I didn't kill anybody, that's good news for me.' I said, 'That's good news for me, too, you didn't kill anybody.'"

Prosecutors said Rahimi left his home before sunrise that day to plant a pipe bomb along the route of a Marine Corps charity race in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, an oceanside community. No one was injured in the explosion because the race had been delayed. It was then canceled.

Hours later, Rahimi went into Manhattan, where he was seen walking from Penn Station to the street locations where two bombs were placed.

The first bomb, hidden near a large trash bin, set off a blast that sent the 100-pound dumpster into the air, shattered windows, scattered bits of metal and caused people on the street to scream and flee the area.

A bomb at 27th Street was discovered and deactivated before it could explode. The following day, a homeless man and his friend alerted authorities after they found a backpack containing smaller bombs in a trash can near a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
