Heading to Super Bowl Parties? Don't Forget Your Rain Gear

$
0
0

Heading out to watch the big game today? Make sure to bring plenty of rain gear - it's going to be a wet one.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet or freezing rain is possible beginning in the late morning and lasting into the early afternoon for the Lehigh Valley, Berks County and even the northern Pennsylvania suburbs. This may lead to icy spots along roadways. Even after the snow mix turns to rain, roadways that are below freezing could remain slippery.

The rest of the region will see rain by noon. The rain surges in from the southwest, and thanks to a southerly flow, temperatures will be above freezing. The rain will begin light to steady, but turn heavy by 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. The heaviest rain will continue through around 9 p.m. Even the areas that begin with snow will see a changeover to rain mid-afternoon. This could lead to small ponds forming on roadways, which may impact people driving to Super Bowl parties. Make sure the wipers on your vehicle are fully functioning!

The rain will exit 9 p.m and 11 p.m. By midnight, everywhere will be soggy. Drives home could still be slippery north and west, where temperatures will be slightly above freezing.

In total, around .75 inches to 1 inch of rain is likely along the Interstate 95 corridor, as well as neighborhoods to the north and west. Around .5" to .75" is likely over Southern New Jersey and Delaware.

The Lehigh Valley and Berks County could see around 1 inch of snow, but it will mostly be melted from rain later in the day. The Poconos may accumulate 3 to 4 omcjes of snow.

Once the rain exits, temperatures will fall to slightly below freezing for the Monday morning commute. Icy spots where rain did not dry are possible.

How to Watch the Super Bowl and 'This Is Us' Sunday Night

$

0

NBC has got you covered to watch the Super Bowl!

When the Eagles take on the Patriots at U.S. Stadium Bank in Minneapolis, NBC will let users watch the game on desktop, tablets and connected devices (Roku, Apple TV, etc.) without needing to sign in.

Here’s what you need to know:

On TV: NBC begins Super Bowl Sunday coverage with the Road to the Super Bowl at 12 p.m. ET, followed by the Super Bowl Pre-Game at 1 p.m. ET. The game begins at 6 p.m. ET with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. ET. A new, special episode of "This Is Us" will follow the game.

On Desktop or Tablet Devices: All of the same coverage that appears on TV is available on your desktop or tablet -- the Road to the Super Bowl, Super Bowl Pre-Game and kickoff, as well as "This Is Us." This can be viewed on your desktop or tablet on our sites live here. You do not need to sign in with your television provider information to watch these Super Bowl events.

Apps On Connected Devices (Roku, Apple TV, etc.): All coverage of Road to the Super Bowl, Super Bowl Pre Game and kickoff, as well as "This Is Us," can be viewed on the NBC Sports App.

On Mobile Devices: The Pre-Game show and "This Is Us" can be watched on our app by clicking Watch Live TV Now (under the navigation on the top left of the app) or the Live TV icon on the top right of your screen, or just by clicking here. But the game itself must be viewed via the NFL Mobile App.

Since the Eagles charged their way into Super Bowl LII, we here at NBC10 have been fielding the same question from viewers over and over: Will you be airing "This Is Us" after the Eagles win?

The answer is: Yes.

Once NBC Sports is finished broadcasting the Super Bowl (game coverage starts at 6 p.m., by the way), the much-hyped How Did Jack Die? episode of the hit drama will premiere on NBC10.

But that doesn't mean that you won't be able to see how the region is celebrating an Eagles victory.

NBC10's live championship coverage, "NBC10: This is Philly", will be airing on our sister channel COZI-TV, on NBC10.com, and the free NBC10 app. This unparalleled coverage will include exclusive player and coach interviews, a look at celebrations in and around Philadelphia, and live reports from Minneapolis.

Then, when "This Is" Us is over, you can pick up live post-game coverage on NBC10 News at 11 p.m. on NBC10.

Since there will be so much must-see TV, it'll be best if you set your DVR for both channels from 6 p.m. through 1 a.m. That way, if the game goes long, or you watch "This Is Us" live, you won't miss a thing.

So how can you find COZI so you can set said DVR recordings? Here's the channel listing: Comcast channel 248, Verizon FiOS channel 460, and over-the-air at 10.2.

And remember you can always have a two-screen experience by streaming NBC10 live coverage through the free NBC10 app or on NBC10.com.

Philly Police Grease Poles With Mysterious New Substance

“Grease up them poles, because Philly’s gonna win,” sneered Delco native Tina Fey in an unforgettable Super Bowl-inspired "Saturday Night Live" skit.

But would-be pole climbers beware. There is a new substance being slathered on poles throughout the city ahead of Sunday’s big game.

“We are about the business of allowing people to celebrate, as long as it’s done peacefully,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said last week.

He declined to elaborate on exactly what would replace the infamous Crisco from two week’s ago. That particular tactic failed to prevent anyone from climbing poles when the Eagles beat the Vikings.

On Sunday morning, workers were again spotted in Center City greasing poles with a mysterious dark liquid:

[[472628593, C]]

A little birdie told NBC10 police were using hydraulic fluid this time, but a spokesperson would not confirm the rumor.

We do know, however, that the liquid will be green. And we don't mean Eagles green.

“Rest-assured that anything we put on poles will be biodegradable,” Philadelphia police spokesman Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

Eagles Fans Have Lost Their Everlovin' Minds

Sorry, Kids: Local Schools Will Remain Open Monday

Major local school districts in the area plan to remain open on Monday regardless of the outcome of the Super Bowl.

Rumors of cancellation in the event of an Eagles victory were squashed by an email sent out Sunday to all parents of students in the School District of Philadelphia.

"Regardless of the outcome of the game, all Philadelphia district schools will be open tomorrow, February 5," the email, sent out by the district, read. "Please make sure your student is in school on time ready to learn and ready to celebrate with their classmates a great Eagles Super Bowl Victory."

This was also confirmed by H. Lee Whack, Jr., Spokesman and Deputy Chief of Communications for the School District of Philadelphia.

"School District of Philadelphia schools are open on Monday as regularly scheduled," Whack said in an email to NBC10. "We will make any potential announcements regarding a parade should the Eagles win the Super Bowl but until then E A G L E S - EAGLES!!!"

NBC10 checked with many other major school districts in the area, and none reported any changes to their plans.

The Super Bowl LII Test of Teams: Quarterback Trick Plays

$

0

They're called trick plays for a reason.

Each team in Super Bowl LII has attempted a trick play -- a member of the offense passing to the quarterback instead of the other way around -- but it was the Super Bowl rookie, not the veteran, who held on to the ball.

Early in the second quarter of the game, New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola passed to quarterback Tom Brady. But despite being wide open, Brady could only get his finger tips on the ball, failing to bring it in for a crucial first down.

[[472654783, C]]

In the final seconds of the second quarter, perhaps just to spite Brady, the Philadelphia Eagles tried the same trick play in the red zone. Tight end Trey Burton threw a perfect pass to wide open quarterback Nick Foles.

[[472654203, C]]

Foles is the first player in the history of the NFL to throw and catch a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Social media was quick to lambaste Brady and praise Foles, both quarterbacks trending on Twitter at halftime for their trick plays.

The Eagles led the Patriots 22-12 at halftime.

The Eagles' 22 points is the most the Patriots have ever allowed in a Super Bowl first half during the Bill Belichick-Brady era. But Brady also had the most passing yards in the first half of any Super Bowl since 2000.

Brady is a stellar quarterback, after all.

Philly Businesses Grab the Super Bowl Spotlight

What’s a Super Bowl without the commercials? It’s the one television event where advertising is part of the entertainment. Not to mention that, in the age of DVR, it’s one of the few programs left that people don’t fast-forward.

Local businesses took full advantage of the massive Philadelphia audience for an Eagles Super Bowl this year. A few of the standouts:

CURE Auto Insurance

The insurance company’s blue ball mascot took a jab at the New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, for the team’s Deflategate controversy a couple seasons ago in two 15-second spots. The company that offers coverage to drivers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania ended both with “Go Birds!”

Jefferson Health

The large Philadelphia health system’s 30-second spot comes at the viewer fast, furious, and taut. It also has fun with words, including a play on the Eagles fan who smacked into a column trying to catch a subway, some football emojis (of course) and some underdog masks.

Dietz & Watson

The meats and cheeses giant, long emblematic of Philadelphia’s manufacturing glory days and based in Wissinoming, gets meta with a 30-second spoof on another recent popular commercial by Bud Light (heard someone say “Dilly Dilly!” recently?). In the meat maker’s case, the saying becomes “Deli Deli!”

Beneficial Bank

The Philadelphia-headquartered financial institution uses its 30 seconds to paint the region in a beautiful light, using scenes from Philadelphia and the suburbs in the best possible light. It’s a montage that’ll remind you of the best of the city.

Philly Fans Triumphant in Streets After Super Bowl Win!

How sweet it sounds: The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions!

For the first time in 52 years, you can say it as often as you want. Scream it. Sing it. Say a little prayer. It’s real. The Eagles upset the much-ballyhooed New England Patriots, 41 to 33 in Super Bowl LII!

The incredible victory crowns a fairy tale season in which the Eagles’ young franchise quarterback Carson Wentz led the team to a 11-2 start before being lost for the season to injury, and the team still found a way to the best record in their conference. His replacement, Nick Foles, was named the Super Bowl MVP.

They embraced an underdog role through a playoff run that made them darlings of their Philadelphia fan base — and much of the rest of the country.

In the biggest game for Philadelphia fans since the 2010 Stanley Cup, the Eagles matched blow-for-blow with the Tom Brady-led Patriots, who were vying for back-to-back championships. They have won the Super Bowl five times, all since 1999.

The Eagles captured their first Lombardi Trophy of the Super Bowl era. They did win championships in 1948,1949 and 1960, before the NFL-AFL merger.

The breathtaking win punctuates a rise to prominence faster than most fans expected at the beginning of the season. A common refrain will likely emerge this offseason: This team’s drive to Super Bowl LII won’t be the last deep playoff team in the years ahead.

The 2017-2018 season will be remember with fondness for many reasons, among them: the emergence of Wentz, the gutsy play of backup quarterback Nick Foles, a 13-3 record on the way to division and conference titles.

Wentz in his second year, along with a powerful defense and arsenal of offensive weapons, turned the Eagles into a Super Bowl contender one year after a seven-win season in 2016-2017. He tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee Dec. 10 in the 14th game of the season, ending his season. He had surgery to repair the ligaments, and he said in late January that he is still hopeful to be ready by Week 1 of next season.

"My goal is to be ready for Week 1," Wentz said. "I'm going to push and do everything I can to be ready. And I'm very confident in that."

Coach Doug Pederson, also in only his second year after a stint as an assistant coach to Andy Reid in Kansas City, has said all year that he expected Wentz to develop into a star that a team could be built around.

“You’re just seeing what you see in like an Eli Manning or a Brady or a Roethlisberger, where he is talking to his guys even during the game and making necessary adjustments and talking to myself or Frank Reich,” Pederson said in September. “And then just the way that he handles his business during the week. He prepares, he studies, he’s in here early with the quarterbacks and just an outstanding character and for a young guy to have that maturity, it’s pretty special in Carson.”

As the rest of the roster and coaches proved in the six games they played after their star quarterback went down, there’s something incredibly special about the entire team.

By the way, there will be a celebratory parade. The City of Philadelphia will announce details about when the parade will take place and what the route will be on Monday.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.

At least a dozen people who climbed on top of an awning outside Philadelphia's Ritz-Carlton Hotel during the Eagles Super Bowl win celebrations toppled to the street when the structure collapsed Sunday night.

Videos posted to social media showed fans scaling the vinyl and metal blue awning and then jumping off.

Eventually, when a number of people climbed onto the structure at the same time, it folded in on itself.

A warning: the video below contains profanity.

There were reports of injuries, but police and fire officials could not confirm those details to NBC10.

Broken Glass, Downed Poles: Some Eagles Revelers Go Too Far

Most of the Eagles fans that poured onto Philadelphia streets after the franchise’s first Super Bowl win celebrated responsibly but some vandalized businesses, breaking windows, spray-painting walls and looting at least one store.

Fans poured out of homes, apartments and bars into the streets, many making their way to Broad Street and City Hall, where the party lasted for hours. Most fans celebrated joyously, without doing any property damage, but a handful of fans vandalized stores and took down street poles.

The traffic signals outside City Hall were taken down, as witnessed by NBC10's Matt DeLucia. Some of the windows at the Macy’s across the street from City Hall were also smashed.

[[472711263, C]]

The awning outside the nearby Ritz-Carlton Hotel collapsed under the weight of fans standing on top of it.

On the north side of Broad Street, NBC10 cameras captured planters blocking a lane of traffic near Race Street Monday morning after being toppled over.

In Rittenhouse, poles were downed, some storefront windows were smashed, newsstands were toppled and some people looted items from the Rite Aid at 17th & Chestnut streets, a store worker told DeLucia. At that same corner, traffic lights remained downed at the intersection Monday morning.

[[472706813, C]]

And along South Street, some anti-Tom Brady graffiti was scrawled on at least one building, as witnessed by an NBC10 employee.

Philadelphia police didn't immediately reveal if they made any arrests.

Crews worked through the night to clean up the debris and overturned trash cans. Street sweepers continued to clean Broad Street near Chestnut Street as of 6 a.m. anyone needing to travel in Center City Monday morning should allow extra time due to potential road detours.

No word yet on the total cost of the damage.

The Eagles are Super Bowl champions

So when’s the parade?

The morning after the Eagles Super Bowl victory sent thousands of people onto the streets of Philadelphia for an unofficial parade up Broad Street, fans wanted to know when the team will actually parade with the Lombardi Trophy.

In the moments after Sunday night's victory the city stayed coy about its parade plans.

Mayor Jim Kenney promised to reveal details on when the parade will be held at a Monday news conference.

Details of the exact parade route will also be revealed Monday but NBC10 has learned the parade will start in South Philadelphia and end in front of the Rocky Statue in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

And, Bud Light is keeping its promise to buy beer for Eagles fans by giving out an alcoholic refreshment to fans, 21 and older, at taverns along the parade route.

The time of the announcement has yet to be announced. NBC10 will carry the mayor’s news conference announcing parade plans live on this page.
