NBA Star Kyle Lowry Pledges $1 Million to Villanova

NBA star and Philadelphia native Kyle Lowry is lending a huge helping hand to his alma mater. The Toronto Raptors all-star point guard committed $1 million to Villanova University, the school announced Sunday.

The donation, which comes from Lowry as well as his wife Ayahna, is part of Villanova University’s capital campaign, “For the Greater Great: The Villanova Campaign to Ignite Change.” Launched publicly in October of 2013, the campaign aims to cultivate academic innovation across Villanova’s schools and colleges by recruiting top notch teachers and scholars as well as enhancing financial aid and student opportunities.

The donation is the largest single gift from a Villanova basketball alumnus and the university will name the men’s basketball locker room in the Pavilion the “Kyle Lowry Men’s Basketball Locker Room” in recognition of it.

"On behalf of the Lowry family--Karter, Kameron, Ayahna and myself--we are honored to be able to have this opportunity to give back to Villanova University in this form," Lowry said. "We are very excited about the `Kyle Lowry locker room'."

Lowry, 31, grew up in Philly and played basketball at Cardinal Dougherty High School. He remained in the area for college, playing for Coach Jay Wright and Villanova University for two years. During his sophomore season, Lowry was named to the All Big East second team.

Lowry spent his first seven years in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets. His career reached a significant turning point in 2012 when he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. With the Raptors, Lowry became a three-time NBA all-star and helped the team earn their highest win total in franchise history as well as a berth in the eastern Conference Finals in 2016. That same year, Lowry was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s basketball national team in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Off the court, both Lowry and his wife are known for their philanthropy. They established the Lowry Love Foundation in 2013 which aims to help the underprivileged and disadvantaged in both Philadelphia and Toronto. Lowry was also named the winner of the Native Son Award by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association. He’s set to receive the award Monday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The Raptors will play the 76ers in Philly that same day.

Lowry’s donation to Villanova will help support the construction of a new locker room at the Pavilion, which is currently under renovation. The new locker room will feature 16 custom-made lockers, an audio system and video system for game film. The $60 million Pavilion renovation is being funded entirely through philanthropic commitments.

"We cannot thank Kyle and his family enough for the generosity and support of the Finneran Pavilion," said Mark Jackson, Director of Athletics. "To have his name associated with the men's basketball locker room where so much tradition has been established and where the nation's top players come to play is fitting on all fronts. I'm confident the Lowry name being highlighted upon entry into this space will provide daily inspiration to our players who want to achieve at the highest levels of basketball as Kyle has done with his own career."

          AROUND THE WORLD

Plane Dangles Off Cliff After Skidding Off Runway in Turkey: A commercial plane that skidded off a runway after landing in northern Turkey dangled precariously off a muddy cliff with its nose only a few feet from the sea. Some of the 168 people on board the Boeing 737-800 described it as a "miracle" that everyone was evacuated safely. Images show the aircraft on its belly and at an acute angle just above the water. If it had slid any further along the slope, the plane would have likely plunged into the Black Sea in the Turkish province of Trabzon. The incident late Saturday created panic among the 162 passengers on board Pegasus Airlines Flight PC8622. The six-member crew, including two pilots, was also evacuated and Pegasus said there were no injuries. Flights were suspended at Trabzon Airport for several hours after the incident before resuming again Sunday.

Ice Jam Causes Flooding Along Swelling Delaware River

Beware of potential flooding along the Delaware River in Bucks and Mercer Counties due to ice jams as the river approaches flood level.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning through Monday evening for the chance of minor flooding and possible icing along the river. The warning covers neighborhoods near the river in southwestern Mercer County, New Jersey and southeastern Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Ice could be seen piled up on the river near the Trenton Makes, the World Takes bridge. The flood stage is 20 feet — as of 7:45 a.m., the level was at 19.9 feet, the weather service said.

Icing from the flooding could cause driving hazards.

"Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas," the weather service said. "The water may be deeper than you think."

The ice jam caused multiple road closures along Route 29 in Trenton. Parts of Ferry Road and River Road were also closed due to flooding, Lower Makefield Township police said.

An ice jam also impacted this same area in January 2014. The U.S. Coast Guard used boats to break up the ice at that time.

Here's Where You Can Get an Eagles (Under)Dog Mask

The Eagles showed some doggedness as underdogs in their divisional playoff win over the Falcons.

Offensive tackle Lane Johnson and defensive end Chris Long embraced the role by donning canine masks after the game. Long even gave an interview wearing his German Shepherd mask postgame.

"Somebody was like, 'What's up with the wolf mask?' First of all, it's a German Shepherd,” Long told reporters. “And it's the underdog mask and I wasn't going to field any questions, but I decided I would field them in the dog mask."

With the Birds primed to be underdogs again in the NFC Championship against the Vikings, expect to see a few more of those masks around town and maybe even in the stands at Lincoln Financial Field.

Johnson, without endorsing a brand, said they got the masks from Amazon where there are almost one dozen options for German Shepherd masks.

One company called Lubber, which sells all sorts of animal-themed rubber masks on Amazon, has a mask that nearly mirrors the ones worn by the Eagles. So, for $25.99 (with free shipping) you can look like an underdog, too. One problem - the mask won’t show up until Feb. 7, three days after the Super Bowl, at the earliest.

There are other masks that look a little less similar available for purchase online, including this one for $20.99 from Walmart that would arrive in time for Sunday’s game.

The Eagles don't list masks on the list of prohibited items at the Linc. The team is even encouraging fans to wear dog masks  (doggone it) as long as they take them off when they go through security.

And, if you can’t find your dog mask, an Eagles jersey, cap, scarf, coat, etc. should do just fine for showing your love for the Eagles.
