New Camden Mayor Sworn In, Vows to Be 'Creative'

A familiar face to Camden residents and civic leaders took the oath of office Friday as the small South Jersey city's new mayor, as longtime Council President Frank Moran succeeded outgoing Mayor Dana Redd.

The lifelong city resident was sworn in at 5 p.m. ceremony. He told NBC10 that his biggest priorities will be attracting more new residents and businesses to build off recent success.

"We’re going to be creative in legislation. Work here, live here. So we’re going to create incentives. Those incentives are for those who work in the city, may they be teachers, may they be firefighters, may they be police officers, or for that matter, working for one of these top companies that are now in the city," Moran said.

He cited improved quality of life, including lower crime in 2017 than in previous years, as part of Camden's selling points for newcomers.

Still, Moran, who lives in the East Camden section with his wife and two children, said those who have spent their lives as Camden residents will remain equally important in building a better city.

"I’m going to be a mayor for those communities throughout the city that have been living with an abandoned house attached to theirs, or [with] lots strewn with trash and debris," he said. "I’m a public works guy so I’m looking forward to getting out in the street and really doing what’s necessary."

Police Arrest Suspect in Slaying of College Student in Calif.

Authorities say they've arrested a friend of the victim in connection with the death of a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student who disappeared during a visit home to Southern California.

The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Samuel Woodward.

Blaze Bernstein's body was found Tuesday after an extensive search through Borrego Park in Orange County. Authorities said they were investigating his death as a homicide but would not say how he died.

Bernstein, who was home visiting family in Orange County during his school break from the University of Pennsylvania, was last seen alive about 11 p.m. on Jan. 2. He told relatives he was meeting up with his friends. He was reported missing the following day after family members were unable to get in contact with him.

On Thursday, investigators said they had interviewed a friend of Bernstein's in connection with the case.

The friend said he went with Bernstein to a neighborhood park in the city of Lake Forest on Jan. 2 to meet up with the victim's girlfriend but stayed in the car, the Orange County sheriff's investigator wrote in a a search warrant affidavit. The friend said he could not recall the girlfriend's last name or address.

He said he left about an hour later when Bernstein did not return to the vehicle or respond on social media. He alleged he returned to the park several hours later but could not find Bernstein.

Detectives noted the friend had dirt under his fingernails during the interview, to which he claimed was caused by a fall. Officials also saw that the friend had several cuts and scratches, but he claimed they stemmed from a "fight club" he was involved in.

"On their way out of sheriff's headquarters, [investigators] noticed every door [the friend] had to touch on the way out of the building he pulled his jacket over his hand to prevent his hand and fingers from touching any part of the doors he touched," according to the affidavit.

Vai in Hawaii With Wife During False Missile Threat Alert

0
0

What would you do if you believed you only had minutes left to live? It’s a scenario that NBC10’s Vai Sikahema and scores of other residents and tourists in Hawaii went through Saturday morning after an alert claiming a missile was heading toward the island was sent to their phones.

Vai was vacationing with his wife, a native of Hawaii, at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu when he saw the push alert.

“Emergency Alert,” it read. “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII, SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

During an interview with MSNBC, Vai described his initial reaction.

“I quickly then scrolled through my newsfeeds to see if anything had been posted, nothing had been posted,” he said. “I looked outside, just outside our window. There’s a courtyard and there’s people out there doing yoga.”

After noticing that the people outside didn’t appear to be in a panic and likely didn’t know about the alert since they didn’t have their phones, Vai looked at his television and saw another alert during a basketball game.

“They took out the audio from the game and a voice came on that said, ‘This is not a test. Get inside. indoors,’” Vai said.

Vai then turned to his wife and the two had a conversation few would imagine ever having.

“Look, I think we have 15 to 20 minutes tops,” Vai told her. “Let’s call the kids.”

They called Vai’s four children, all in college.

“Of course being millennials none of them pick up their phone,” Vai said. “At that point we decide to send them a group text.”

Vai texted his children letting them know he and their mom were in Hawaii. He then told them where they could find a will as well as their insurance information. Vai’s wife then turned to him.

“Hey, if this is it, I guess this is no better place to go then here in Hawaii and the two of us being together,” she said.

Ever the journalist, even in what he believed were his last moments, Vai then gave us a call here at NBC10.

“In terms of priorities, I called my kids. They’re at the top of my list,” Vai said. “The next call, I don’t know what this says about me, but the next call that went out was to my assignment desk in Philadelphia.”

As an assignment editor with NBC10, John Taylor has received his share of memorable phone calls. But the one he got from Vai Saturday is one he’ll likely never forget.

“Hey I’m in Hawaii,” Vai told him. “If I’m still here in 15 to 20 minutes, call me if you guys want to do a talker or phoner. I’m here. I’ll be under my bed if I’m still alive. I don’t have time right now to answer any questions. I don’t know anything.”

Vai then stepped out of his hotel room and went to the lobby.

“The lobby was filling up because people were coming off the beach,” he said. “There didn’t seem to be a sense of panic.”

Vai soon learned there was substantial panic across Hawaii however when he saw all the reactions on his social media feed. About 13 minutes after the alert was sent, the Hawaii Emergency Management tweeted, “NO missile threat to Hawaii.” Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard also tweeted around the same time, “HAWAII - THIS IS A FALSE ALARM. THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE TO HAWAII. I HAVE CONFIRMED WITH OFFICIALS THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE."

A correction alert confirming it was a false alarm was later sent to phones.
Cindy McMillan, a spokeswoman for Hawaii Gov. David Ige, confirmed to The Associated Press that it was human error and that someone pressed the wrong button. She said something like this has never happened in the state before and that there will be a press conference to announce new protocols.
While the false alert sparked plenty of confusion and outrage, Vai said the atmosphere seemed relatively calm where he was.

“I think people here, they’ve known for over a year or so that North Korea has the capability to reach Hawaii,” Vai said. “But Hawaiians being Hawaiians, everybody is laid back and nobody seems to be in a state of panic.”

The Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said the agency is launching a full investigation into the false alarm.

Eagles Beat Falcons, Advance to NFC Championship

Watch post-game coverage in the video embedded above.

Phew. Take a deep breath, Philadelphia.

The Eagles are heading back to the NFC championship game.

After some tense moments in the waning stages of Saturday's game, the Eagles pulled off the upset win over Atlanta, 15-10, and will host the NFC championship game next weekend.

The game came down to a 4th-and-goal from the Eagles' 2-yard line with just over a minute remaining. Matt Ryan rolled right but his pass to Julio Jones fell incomplete and the Eagles avoided disaster. Their defense shut the Falcons out in the second half.

Before Saturday's divisional round playoff game against the Falcons, there was a fear that Challenger, the performing bald eagle, wouldn't be able to fly during the national anthem because of gusting winds.

The Eagles offense actually had more trouble getting off the ground.

Eventually, though, Challenger soared through the air during Dr. Jesse McGuire's rendition of the anthem, and the Eagles soared one step closer to the Super Bowl.

Nick Foles didn't have a great game, but eventually he did enough and led a game-winning drive to give the Eagles a win.

This is the first Eagles' home playoff win since the wild card round over the Giants in 2006. It's the first playoff win of any kind since 2008, when the Eagles also went to the NFC title game.

After an ugly first half, the Eagles' defense locked down the Falcons in the second half and their offense started to get a little more momentum.

The Eagles had a really sloppy first half, that included two turnovers. The first turnover came on their second offensive play. Jay Ajayi fumbled the ball away and the Falcons took over and scored a touchdown.

All 10 of the Falcons' first-half points came off turnovers. The other turnover happened on a punt that got held up in the wind in the second quarter. The Falcons were able to score a touchdown off that.

But thanks to a quick 15-yard pass to get the ball into field goal range, Jake Elliott was able to drill a long field goal to have the Eagles down one point, 10-9, heading into the locker room at halftime.

Turning point
The Eagles got the ball at their own 7-yard line down by one point and traveled 74 yards into the wind to kick the go-ahead field goal.

Key stat
This is the fewest points the Eagles have allowed in a playoff game since Jan. 23, 2005 — that was a 27-10 win over the Falcons in the NFC title game.

Offensive stud

Sure, Jay Ajayi fumbled on his first carry of the game, but after that, he was really hard to stop. He had 98 total yards of offense.

Offensive dud
Zach Ertz didn't have much of an impact on Saturday. Foles eventually made some throws, but got off to a terrible start.

Defensive stud
Nigel Bradham had a big sack and made a few good plays on Saturday afternoon. Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham also had very good games.

Defensive dud
Hard to pick one guy, but the Eagles missed several tackles throughout the game. At times, it hurt them.

Key plays

• The stop on 4th-and-goal was huge. Bradham forced the play outside more and Jones couldn't come up with a catch in the end zone. Ball game.

• After it looked like Mohamed Sanu caught a ball for a first down with about 3 ½ minutes left in the game, a Doug Pederson challenge overturned it, but then Matt Ryan hit Julio Jones for a first down on fourth.

• The Eagles went 80 yards on 14 plays in 7:57 in the fourth quarter before Elliott hit a 21-yarder to give them a 15-10 lead. The biggest play of the drive was a 32-yard screen pass to Ajayi on third down.

• Rodney McLeod had a huge sack on a safety blitz on first down late in the third quarter. The Falcons lost 10 yards on it and it gave the Eagles the ball back for another drive.

• Foles hit Jeffery for a 21-yard pass on 3rd-and-8 in the third quarter to move the chains and eventually set up Elliott for a 37-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 12-10 lead late in the third quarter.

• Foles hit Alshon Jeffery with a 15-yard pass to get the ball to the Atlanta 35-yard line with one second left in the first half. Jake Elliott then hit a 53-yarder to make the score 10-9 Falcons at halftime.

• On 3rd-and-goal from the 6, Matt Ryan somehow avoided a sack and threw a weak, wobbly pass to Devonta Freeman for a touchdown to put the Falcons up 10-6 with 5:41 left in the second quarter. Malcolm Jenkins left Freeman too early and Ryan was able to make him pay.

• The Falcons were punting into the wind in the second quarter, when the ball got caught in the wind and hit an Eagle. The Falcons recovered the ball. After a terrible personal foul call on Rodney McLeod, they moved close to the end zone.

• Doug Pederson dialed up a nifty misdirection run to Nelson Agholor on 3rd-and-3 in the second quarter to pick up 21 yards. A few plays later, Pederson used a stretch play with LeGarrette Blount to get into the end zone. Jake Elliott missed the extra point to make the score 6-3.

• The Falcons kicked a 33-yard field goal to take a lead. On third down, Ryan hit Taylor Gabriel for what might have been a short gain and a fumble, but Doug Pederson didn't challenge it after it was ruled as an incompletion.

• After the Eagles picked up 42 yards on a defensive pass interference on the first play of the game, Ajayi fumbled the ball away on the second. Ricardo Allen popped the ball free.

Injury report
Dannell Ellerbe (hamstring) came into the weekend listed as questionable, but was able to start.

Up next

The Saints and the Vikings play at 4:40 p.m. on Sunday. The Eagles will host the winner of that game in the NFC championship game next weekend.
